Love! Love! Love! The movie is fantastic & follows the book written by Judy Blume. Kathy Bates is the Bubbe every kid wants....loving, funny and has the very best time with Margaret. Stellar performance by Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret. Read the book when I was in 5th grade......1972....and have always remembered it with such a smile on my face. And yes, ordered it and have watched 3 times......laughing a lot.

This adaptation of Judy Blume's famous children's book is truly well done. The casting is good and the story true to the original without being slavish. While the story is harsh on organized religion (although the worship of the African American congregation and the brief glimpse of Catholic confession are treated more favorably), Margaret's conversations with God are moving.

Good movie for a teenager. We have seen in the theater and had to purchase. Have not read the book, but heard that was just as good.

A great book transfer to screen. A well-written and acted film, that will make you laugh and pull on your heartstrings. I would highly recommend this film.

Director Kelly Fremon Craig’s coming of age comedy Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023) is adorable. I had a big smile on my face the entire time watching this one. It’s easily the sweetest movie of the year with a playful lighthearted sense of humor and engaging dramatic realness that’s very touching. It’s amazing that there is a comedy that touches on cleavage, periods, and religion all with the same grace and humor. I hope this gets some love during awards season as it deserves Oscars for its moving acting, empathetic writing, kinetic direction, and beautiful cinematography. I can see families, kids, teenagers, elders, and adults all finding laughs and tears while watching Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. I can say that Margaret is this year’s Lady Bird or Love, Simon as it reaches the heights of great coming of age comedies. Screenwriter Kelly Fremon Craig brings a warmth to her earnest characters with funny jokes, awkward encounters, cute friendships, and realistic depictions of puberty that are sure to be helpful to growing kids and parents struggling with talking to their kids about health. I’m really impressed with Craig’s sensitivity towards the serious subjects of faith, sexuality, maturity, friendship, parenting, and growing. She handles each topic with a careful tenderness that’s inviting you to think and feel about how Margaret feels, while offering pleasant lighthearted humor to help guide the viewer along comfortably. I’ve often questioned my own beliefs, so seeing Margaret pray to God and wonder about her own faith really connected to me. Original author Judy Blume deftly creates a lovable little girl going through normal changes with puberty, but handles her thoughts with a maturity that shows she understands how kids think and feel. Judy Blume writes with an understanding of the importance of universal themes and ones that women have to come to terms with too. Even as a guy, I related to Margaret’s struggles with faith and friendship, while finding empathy for her specifically female anxieties that young ladies must live with as they mature. Every awkward moment of Margaret’s insecurity feels heartfelt and kind with a loving written hug to let the audience know we care for her. I really appreciate the excellent writing here. Rachel McAdams is gorgeous and hilarious as Margaret’s loving art teacher mother Barbara Simon. I adore Rachel McAdams as she’s my favorite Canadian actress ever. McAdams finds a cute humor and devastating dramatic heart for Margaret. She brings a sweet playfulness to Barbara and lets her feel uncertain about the parent councils’ activities as well as how well Margaret is doing in a new environment, all while feeling torn that her own parents are estranged because of their bigotry. I really hope Rachel can get a Best Supporting Actress for her wonderful role as Margaret’s mom as she’s caring with a touching realness and insecure at her own struggles with moving and finding her place in life. Abby Ryder Fortson is very cute and compelling as the sympathetic young heroine Margaret Simon. Fortson shows how uncomfortable, awkward, and embarrassed Margaret feels in social situations for a deeply resonant dramatic performance. Her comedy skills are formidable as I was cracking up at all of her faces when other girls would talk about their breasts or periods. Abby Ryder Fortson deserves all the love and awards for portraying Margaret with a stunning gracefulness and shyness that comes across as so sweet. She is magnificent as Margaret! Elle Graham is hysterical as Margaret’s impressionable blonde friend Nancy Wheeler. She nails how Nancy thinks she should look, behave, and judge others with an insane commanding performance that stands out among the fantastic supporting cast. She’s a little monster, but also sympathetic when you realize she too is just a little girl trying to find her own way in life like Margaret. Benny Safdie is excellent as Margaret’s amiable and frustrated father Herb Simon. His clear disapproval of Barbara’s anti-Semitic parents feels raw, while he can feel very kind to Margaret. Kathy Bates is a riot as Margaret’s outrageous grandmother Sylvia Simon. She clearly cares about Margaret’s worries. Echo Kellum is so nice as Margaret’s supportive and encouraging teacher Mr. Benedict. Isol Young is wondrous as the isolated and bullied taller girl Laura Danker, who the girls gossip about because of her larger chest and higher height out of wicked jealousy. Isol’s Laura confronting Margaret is a really powerful scene that immediately makes Margaret feel guilty. Amari Alexis Price is nice as the shy and impressionable Janie Loomis. I like that she doesn’t hesitate to go dance with Margaret and Laura in the end. Katherine Kupferer is super funny as the impressionable friend Gretchen Potter, who is exasperated about everything. Aidan Wojtak-Hissong is really nice and intriguing as Margaret’s crush Moose Freed. Kate MacCluggage is sublime as Nancy’s sultry redhead mother Mrs. Jan Wheeler. Her shocked expressions are really funny. Zack Brooks is creepy as the popular boy in school, whom Nancy likes, named Philip Leroy. He does these great come hither expressions to the girls that show Philip Leroy’s confidence and narcissism. Mia Dillon’s Mary Hutchins and Gary Houston’s Paul Hutchins are very cruel and judgmental Catholics. Editors Nick Moore and Oona Flaherty pull off several cool montages with fast cuts. I liked their gentle cutting for the dramatic scenes to keep it intimate in feeling. Margaret has a very quickly paced 106 run-time. Cinematographer Tim Ives has a lovely shooting style. Many of the wide shots are jaw-dropping of the environment with cute close-up shots. I felt like I was always right next to Margaret. It’s really creatively shot with tons of surprising shots. Production designer Steve Saklad creates a charming apartment and home for Margaret with done up churches and synagogues. Art direction from Angela Stauffer and Christina Phensy have colorful art direction that really focuses on Margaret’s face. The bright lighting and softer look of Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret is quite pretty to see. Set decorators Selina van den Brink and Alanna Dempewolff-Barrett put a lot of 70’s furniture and props to really help bring the era to life. Composer Hans Zimmer’s lively score is very cute and beautiful with nice music to add a pleasant atmosphere to Margaret’s world. The 70’s soundtrack is amazing with eclectic and amusing song choices. Sound designers Kyle Arzt, Kevin O’Connell, Demetri Evdoxiadis, Mike Cavell, and David Cook let the girls’ screams ring out like their laughter. Costume designer Ann Roth creates all these super stylish, cute outfits for Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson. Their long, wavy hairstyling is fabulous from hairstylists Heather Hawkins, Therese Ducey, and Diamond McCall. Makeup artists Kimberly Greene, Lisa Rocco, Renee Goodwin, Cecilia Veradi, Megan Deputy, and Deidre Outlaw do a lot of different looks for all the girls that fit the 70’s era. In conclusion, I adored Kelly Fremon Craig’s phenomenal coming of age comedy Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
