Customers are impressed with the touchscreen, battery life, and performance of the 14" 2-in-1 Chromebook. Many also appreciate its ease of use and the ample RAM for a Chromebook. However, some customers find the weight to be a drawback, and a few have noted limitations with the operating system and its compatibility with certain applications. The price-to-performance ratio is frequently praised.

Our 7th grader enjoys her ASUS chromebook. Yeah!

We purchased this Asus chromebook for our middle schooler to start the 7th grade. From our perspective, we believe this chromebook was an excellent value based on its price and features. Best Buy had a Labor Day sale and we purchased this chromebook for under $300 (retail was $499). We researched other comparable chromebooks from HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer. However, this Asus chromebook was the clear winner in terms of its feature. The 3 features that were important to us was the chromebook's performance, battery life and usability.
The performance speed is very good with its 8GB memory and AMD Ryzen process chip. The performance was more then adequate for our 7th grader to browse the internet for research, check e-mails and do her school work using Google applications. The video resolution is very clear and crisp with full high definition and the sound output is excellent with its built-in speakers. The chromebook's 2-in-1 feature is a nice feature and can be used a tablet and fold as a tent for display. The chromebook's color (ponder blue) and overall built is sleek and solid. This chromebook is about 4 lbs, a little on the heavier side as compared to other chromebooks. The chromebook battery life has been great as our 7th grader can use the chromebook at school all day with fully charged battery. As for usability, the chromebook has a touch screen and the keyboard has a back-light. Overall, this Asus chromebook has a lot of nice features and the sale price under $300 is a great deal for a chromebook that can be used for several years. Enclosed are several pictures of the chromebook.

This computer is a marvel in every way.
The only con I see in this thing is the weight, it's really heavy at 2 kg, if you can overcome this, then by all means its good.
Speed is amazing, the screen has very pretty colors though its not very bright (for outside use at least), keyboard is back-lit and has a very good key distribution, speakers are amazing, port selection is nice, the fan is not very loud.
I haven't tried gaming yet, only Minecraft (which came as a Chromebook perk), it plays nicely, stutters sometimes.

I love Asus products and I love this Chromebook. I am having one issue. The mouse pad sticks randomly and I didn't eat near my Chromebook. I called tech support 3 months ago and they said to power wash it which worked. Unfortunately, I've had to power wash it 3 times in 4 months due to the mouse pad sticking. I'm working with Asus and their resolution is to send it in for repair instead of replacement which sucks. 7-10 business day turn around. They do pay for shipping which is a plus. The Chromebook is fast and the battery lasts a very long time. It's heavy and I prefer it that way. It's solid.

I had high hopes for this laptop. I am pretty barebones in what I needed a laptop for. I use almost exclusively google and android products thus a chromebook was an easy choice and a great price. However within the first 3 months of using the laptop it turned off and simply did not charge. This was only after lightly using it as I have a work laptop that I use everyday. Geeksquad was very helpful and I got my device back around 3 weeks later. There was no issue and I went on using the laptopn until around 3 months later the same issue happened again! I had been using the laptop and suddenly the charger would not show an indicator light or any other signs of life from the device.
Average rating takes into account that it is light weight, fast, portable, and is a 2 in 1 which i need for design. Its hard to say if average is far too generous or not harsh enough as I have only gotten to use this laptop passively for 2 3-month intervals at a time.
Hopefully it comes back from geeksquad fixed for good!
Side note:
-speakers are muffled because they are placed on the bottom underside of the laptop.
-charging port on both sides!

Nearly top-tier performance w/mid-tier Chromebook

This Chromebook surprised me at just how much performance ASUS managed to squeeze out of an otherwise modestly appointed 14” 2-in-1. We already have two Windows-based ASUS 2-in-1s at home; a 13.3” ZenBook Flip S and a 15.6” ZenBook Flip 15, so I kind of knew what to expect from the “Flip” model line going in. And yet even though both of those ASUS models cost about 3x more than this similarly styled Chromebook, the ASUS CM3401 Flip manages to trade blows with its big brothers in many important respects.
Let’s start with all the positives. If you’re already familiar with the Google/Chrome ecosystem, you’ll feel right at home with the Chromebook. But even as a lifelong Windows user like me, my transition to the Chrome OS was essentially seamless (this is our second Chromebook in as many years)—Chrome OS really has come a long way in recent years to become a legitimately viable alternative to MS’s more bloated and resource-intensive Windows OS for basic computing and multimedia needs. But what I love most about Chrome is the simplicity and greatly streamlined user experience…if you just want a simple Internet appliance that works, and works quickly, the Chromebook is arguably the way to go.
Setup was mercifully simple with initial updates and getting the laptop ready for the first use taking just 5 minutes from first opening the lid to mousing about on the desktop. From a full power-down, it takes about 6 seconds to get to the desktop again (or 0 seconds if you’re just opening the lid from sleep state to get back to work), and the CM3401’s AMD Ryzen 3 chip manages to keep everything feeling snappy and responsive, even with many open tabs on Chrome. My Intel i7-equipped ZenBook Flip S was built around Intel’s new EVO design philosophy--it’s a way to makes Windows feel more portable and “Chrome-like” in terms of responsiveness, but it still takes my ASUS Flip S nearly 25 seconds to power up and sadly the Windows experience feels positively glacial compared to how quickly apps and browser tabs open on the ASUS CM3401 Flip. And although I’m a PC gamer at heart, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ASUS Chromebook could handle some Android games from the Google Play store that actually looked pretty impressive on the screen.
The Chromebook is well-spec’d with two USB-C ports (one on each side) both with DP and power delivery, a 10GB/s superspeed USB-A port, a full-sized HDMI port for easy hookup to TVs or other external displays, 3.5mm mic/headphone combo port, and a micro-SD card slot for additional storage. There is a dedicated power button on the side as well as a volume rocker which are very convenient physical controls to have at-the-ready when you use the laptop in tent-display or tablet modes.
If you plan to use this 2-in-1 for productivity or web surfing, you’ll definitely appreciate the taller 16:10 aspect ratio of the 1920x1200 screen that makes it easier to see more of your documents or web pages onscreen at any time. Sadly, I don’t have a stylus that works with Chrome that I could use for testing, but the touchscreen display is greatly appreciated, especially for things like navigation and operation when in tablet mode…I can only imagine how a stylus would make the tablet experience an even more productive one. Speaking of productivity, I took the Chromebook to work with me a few times and routinely got more than 8 hours on a single charge of mixed media and productivity use throughout the day—none of my Windows laptops could *ever* go a full work day without heading back to the wall socket for some more battery juice.
The built-in speakers sound pleasant and are loud enough to use the Chromebook as a media player in its own right, though obviously you’re not going to wake the neighbors or rattle the walls with any deep, gut-punching bass. The built-in webcam has HD-resolution and actually provides very clear image/video quality—and I especially like the onboard privacy slider that clearly shows a red dot when the lens is covered; more laptops need to take a cue from this design feature.
The chicklet keyboard is solid with a very nice/bright backlight for the keys. Fortunately, the lettering on the keys is nice high-contrast white against a black background so it’s easy to read the keys even without backlighting. I’m not necessarily a big fan of the lower-case keycaps, but that’s nitpicking at this point. Key travel is minimal (obviously), but the keys don’t feel mushy or slow. Virtually all keycaps are full size except for the half-height function keys (brightness, screen capture, task/desk switcher, etc.) and the arrow keys. The trackpad is on the larger side of those I’ve seen on a small laptop and it’s very smooth and solid feeling.
You might initially be put off by the rather spartan-sounding 128GB SSD, but as many Chrome OS assets and files are cloud/web-based, the SSD will go a bit farther for you than they might on a conventional laptop unless you like to clutter your drive up with a LOT of video files, images, or large Google Play apps. Again, however, don’t forget that you have the SD slot on the slide to add as much additional storage as your wallet can handle—I put a 1TB SanDisk Extreme card into the slot that was formatted in Windows and it was recognized immediately…including the custom .ICO file I created to give me a thumbnail picture of the drive itself in the file explorer.
Finally, I give ASUS props for creating a handsome-looking device with a “Ponder Blue” colorway that is a nice departure from the black, grey, or silver sea of laptop colors that most devices seem to sport these days. The hinges are set off from the rest of the shell with a heavy, shiny metallic finish that gives the Chromebook a bit of visual flair without looking totally over the top.
With so much going for it—is there anything NOT to like? Truthfully, not much. This laptop is built like a tank. It has a reassuringly solid feel with zero flex around the keyboard and trackpad, and the 2-in-1 hinges help hold the display smartly in place regardless of whether you’re using it fully open like a laptop or tented for table-top display—you can even move it around with one hand without changing the angle of the screen unless you start violently shaking the Chromebook around (not sure why you would, but that’s your business).
That said…this laptop is also built like a tank. Despite the description touting the device as “ultrathin and ultralight,” the CM3401 Flip is not very svelte or sexy-thin. The added depth (and LARGE vent cutouts on the bottom) undoubtedly helps with heat dissipation—in fact, I don’t recall ever really hearing the fan kick in even when I was playing a few graphically complex Google Play games. But you can see how it compares to the objectively more portable/travel-friendly ASUS ZenBook Flip S in one my review photos.
What’s more, the Chromebook CM3401 Flip is deceptively heavy in the hand for what you would expect for a device of its size. In tablet form, the 14” screen actually seems ideal for on-the-go notetaking in class or meetings, but the weight of the unit may make tablet use and one-handed support just a little awkward—those of you who have difficulty holding heavier electronics and tablets for long periods of time may want to give the CM3401 a test drive first.
Finally, the screen, while clear and nicely sized, is shiny—like REALLY shiny. This gives the impression of colors with a little more pop, but it can also be distracting in brightly lit rooms as it’s hard to view the screen from pretty much any angle without a lot of intrusive reflections. For dark video content, I noticed just a tad of backlight bloom in the lower right corner of the screen—but it was nothing as bad as some of the IPS glow I’ve seen in other laptops. However, you can also see in the side-by-side comparison to the smaller ZenBook Flip S’s OLED screen that the CM3401 Flip’s screen lacks a bit of punch and depth when it comes to color reproduction; it will also not render HDR or Dolby Vision video content. Still, the ZenBook Flip S is nearly 3x the price, has more than 6x the pixel resolution, and features different display technology than the Chromebook CM3401 Flip; therefore, I would expect to see such differences anyway--but it’s hard not to notice the downgrade in PQ and video performance once you’ve seen better.
Nevertheless, if you’re in the market for a Chromebook, even at the asking price, the CM3401 Flip is already a VERY good value; and if you can get it on sale, it becomes a “what are you waiting for?” proposition—VERY HIGHLY recommended with just those few quick asides you should know going in.

I didn’t think I would fall in love using it. I bought for my daughter to use but I want to try the product I bought for her… I might asked her to switch with my MacBook for this one! I love the touch of the keyboard and it’s very convenient doing my report as it is touch screen. It’s easy for me to tap check boxes for my report than clicking a mouse for it! I also love the part where you can use it as a tablet as well! I LOVE IT <3

Bought this Chromebook to replace by kid’s old Chromebook for school work and gaming entertainment. This Chromebook is much more snappy and fast than I expected and is my first AMD based laptop and I am quite impressed with the performance. Tried 2 other Intel Celeron based Chromebooks from Amazon and they lagged and struggled to do basic things. Do not get me wrong Intel makes good processors too but know which kind of processor you are getting from them before you buy. This is where I learned to do better prior research on the processor itself from either Intel’s or AMD’s website. Go to their website and you can type in the processor model number and get the quarter period and year the design was released as well as the number of core processors and threads, the more the better. As for gaming this Chromebook works well with Roblox for gaming and you can set the parental controls accordingly so you do not have to govern what your kid is doing. Would highly recommend this particular Chromebook to anyone for school and light to moderate gaming needs. And another thing, this laptop does have a backlit keypad and the screen can flip around to the back as shown in the pics, making the screen much more stable/sturdy to use the touch screen functionality if you want to.

This is a review of Asus Chromebook CM3401, with AMD Ryze3 7320C Mobile processor )4-Core/8-thread, 2M cache, up to 4.1 GHz max boos), with Graphic AMD Radeon. With memory 8GB LPDDR5, with max up to 8GB, and storage of 128GB M.2 NVMe PCie 3.0 SSD.
Its display has capability for Touch Screen, with size 14-0 in , WUXGA (1920x1200) 16:10, wide view, Glossy display. And twith the keyboard that has LED backlit.
This version by Asus include variety of ports, 1 USB 3.2 Type-A, 1 USB 3.2 Type-C support display / power delivery, 1 micro HDMI 2.1, 1 3.5 mm combo audio jack, and micro sd card reader, And the included camera has definition of 1080p FHD with privacy shutter.
In term of audio, includes built-in speaker from Harman Kardon, built-in array microphone, Google Assistance voice recognition support.
As described above, it comes with quite a range of options for connectivity port with latest version. For wifi, it has WiFi6 (802.11ax) Dual Band 2*2, and bluetooth 5.3.
Its package claims that the battery last up to 13 hours.
With all, upon hands on the hardware does feel sturdy and put together all the pieces well. Setting it up is quick as soon as it does the latest software updates, and using the google account everything ready to run in about 15 minutes or so without counting the time to customize.
Usage experience in term of software and application cannot say much as it is not different from using google’s experience with mobile device just performing the same in bigger screen with keyboard.
But focusing on the hardware and how well work with the software side:
- Typing: it feels soft as type, it is responsive and bit bouncing as type;
- Keyboard Backlit: regardless of the ambient light intensity and time of the day, it is always one. Upon touching the trackpad, it activate immediately. Not sure if it is specific to the model under review, but could’ find setting to control it in a sense to enable, increase/decrease its intensity;
- Power button: it is placed about top right above side of the trackpad area. It is very slim button;, but is hard to press or seems takes some get used to;
- Volume button: same as power button, and it takes some time to get used to as it doesn’t responds as soon as press;
- Hardware controlling function buttons: this is used in combination with additional function key, It does as intended. Not much more or less. Only downside I feel is that you need to use both hands for the functions on the right side. Or can’t perform with right hand;
- Display: it is responsive via keyboard and on screen keyboard. It is is possible to control degree of intensity, but does what the hardware definition allows, more than needed for regular user enough to edit photos and video.
- Audio: although the specification says Harman Kardon, couldn’t notice any special sound experience as video and music is played on Chromebook speaker. It doesn’t come with control such as equalizer, or spacial sound effect.
- Microphone: it is descent as during the virtual meeting the other side didn’t notice breaking voice or discontinued conversation.
- Life of battery: didn’t test all the way that the battery ends at 0%. But as reference, left it on unplugged to power without bluetooth connected device but On, with two windows of browser opened, one with email and second news portal from google. In about two hours without using it. The battery level went from 100& to 56%. As second reference, one hour after the first reference and after having performed multiple setting changes and browsing, the battery level was from 56% to 51%.
What does well:
1. Its feel and look that appears of quality made hardware. It is sturdy and the port and buttons does’t look bulky or too much.
2. It can ben used as tablet as it flip, and all the functionalities are available without major stress to use them.
3. USB C on both side for charging.
4. Finger print smudge: on the screen, keyboard and hardware doesn’t show finger prints
What would be nice to do better:
1. Weight: it is quite heavy, probably it is the downside of sturdy hardware and military grade stahdard, but with 4.08lb, and being thick each part of display and keyboard, makes bit hard for mobility or use as supplement of tablet per se;.
2. Stylus: Doesn’t include Stylus holder for who opt to buy separately and use with it;
3. Audio: feels quite standard quality.
4. Using it as tablet: if it is used as tablet, and in vertical mode such that the buttons are at the bottom and placed on the surface, would be nice it detect it and block its functions. During the test, happened that it power off, or disabled keyboard function from hardware as some point somehow pressed multifunction buttons of the keyboard;
5. The display as using with touch screen in normal position, it feels weak as entering input on the screen it move and not stable. Fells flimsy like it gonna torn apart.
6. Display: watching a movie in the ambience of high lighting, it reflect on the display interfering the moment.
Based o the short time usage, I think it is recommendable for those that doesn’t have the big need of mobility and highly dependent on google’s applications and services.

The Goldilocks of Chromebooks

I’ve used various computing devices since I was a kid. My first PC was an Intel 486DX processor with hardly any RAM or HDD space, back in the 90s. I’ve used almost every iteration of Windows, and MacOS, as well as dabbling with Linux a few times. In the last 5 years, I have started using Chromebooks for some of my work. I can honestly say at this point, Chromebooks have matured to the point that I would say 90% of people can get most of their computing needs met with a Chromebook. The great thing is that you can generally find yourself a really good Chromebook for less than you would pay for a Windows laptop, not to mention how much you’d be saving over a Macbook.
This ASUS 14” Chromebook is great. I would say it’s a mid-range Chromebook. You get a lot of great performance and features, as well as some fantastic build quality. Let’s start with all the great things you are getting here. This Chromebook is the perfect screen size. 14” is portable enough to fit easily in most bags, but still gives you enough screen real estate to get some work done. The size is also nice if you are trying to consume some media or need to lay out windows side by side.
It’s a 2-in-1 device so this means the screen can fold all the way back and you can use it as a tablet. You actually get 3 different modes here; you get your normal traditional laptop mode with a keyboard easily accessible, if you fold the screen back you get a stand mode, and if you fold the screen all the way back you get tablet mode. Once the Chromebook senses you have folded the screen back past far enough, ChromeOS changes to tablet mode and allows you to use gestures to use it. Think of how a normal tablet or phone would work with gestures. Swipes to navigate windows, and taps to select items.
Performance is stellar. I can run multiple apps, Chrome Tabs, streaming media, and using an external monitor without so much as a hiccup. I think ASUS did a great job of pairing the AMD Ryzen 3 7320c processor, with a generous 8GM of Ram, and a quick 128GB SSD. Chromebooks are generally cloud based devices so in my experience 128GB goes much further than on a Windows laptop or Mac.
The actual Chromebook is very well built. Keyboard feels great to use, and it was nice to see that the keyboard is backlit. The trackpad is large, and feels smooth. You get enough connections for most situations. Headphone jack, HDMI, USB-A, 2x USB-C, and a microSD slot for more storage. You also have your power and volume buttons which is nice to have when you are in tablet mode. The webcam is decent, and nice that it has a privacy shade if you don’t want to use it. I will say the only gripe I have with this Chromebook is it is a tad heavier than I had imagined. It’s probably on par with other Chromebooks, but generally 2-in-1 devices seem lighter to me. I think the weight makes it feel like it’s well built.
This Chromebook has everything you’d want. It has fantastic battery life, great WiFi performance, stellar overall performance. It’s well built with a great touch screen, large trackpad, very nice keyboard, and enough IO to handle anything. It’s nice that you get a USB-C charger, and that you can use either USB-C port on the left or right side of the Chromebook. The cherry on top is the nice subtle blue color it comes in. Sets itself apart from other devices without being too showy. This would be an easy recommendation for anyone, unless you are editing film, or trying to play AAA games without cloud gaming

TLDR; ChromeOS. AMD Ryzen 3 7320C with Radeon Graphics, 8GB DDR5 Memory, 128GB SSD. Display resolution 1920x1080 FHD @ 14”. Can be folded into a tablet with its touchscreen ability. The laptop itself is on the heavy side, especially for a Chromebook, at 4 pounds. Looks to have ample ventilation (I think I hear at least one fan spooling in there!), but the laptop is on the thick side as well. 2x USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, 3.5mm audio, and a microSD card reader. Very large touchpad. Harmon/Kardon sound. Battery life is amazing.
The first thing I noticed when I picked up the Asus Chromebook was how heavy it was. I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty heavy to me and it caught me by surprise. That being said, the laptop feels very solid; there is no flex when I pick up the laptop one-handed on either corner while opened, and the hinge on this thing is very strong. You’d have to shake it with purpose to get the hinge to move inadvertently, otherwise it’s staying where you place it,
This latest iteration of Chromebook comes with AMD’s 7th Gen 7000 Series APUs. This particular model houses the Ryzen 3 7320C; 4 core / 8 threads, base clock @ 2.4GHz, boost clock @ 4.1GHz, Radeon 610M mobile graphics, TDP @ 15W. The key takeaway here is the 15W TDP…this little monster can do a lot without breaking the battery bank. I know because I took this thing with me on a family trip to Kauai and I forgot the charger. Oh well, I thought. After 3 days, the laptop battery is at 50% and claiming 6 hours of runtime. Impressive. Performance-wise, the laptop feels very snappy and I never have to wait on Chromebook tabs to refresh or load.
I think I would use this as a traditional laptop for the most part. I know this is capable of turning into a tablet, but it does feel a bit clunky due to its heft, and it’s a bit awkward feeling the keyboard underneath. I’m actually scared that I’d lose a key if I accidentally snag it against something. As far as productivity, your choices will be limited to docs, spreadsheets and the like. If you want to play games, there are a wealth of choices in the Google Play store that this laptop can handle just fine.
