Bought this item as an open box. After two days of use, the recharger would not recharge, the page up key broke off, and the wifi would not connect. Unfortunately, since I was going to bring this laptop overseas, I did not bother buying any warranty. What a waste of hard earned money.

Solid overall but uneven back-lighting at startup

I love the design, the specs, and the pricing. Don't worry about the speed, which you can greatly improve by swapping to SSD drive. However, it took me two exchanges to find out the screen of this model may have quality issues. - 1st Laptop: The screen had a red dead pixel on the lower right. It's especially obvious at starting but no biggie for the rest of laptop when operating. - 2nd laptop: I started to notice uneven back lighting on the upper edge of screen, when restarting in a dark environment (ASUS image running on screen). At first, I thought it's my eyes and the screen view seemed fine after Windows started with all the desktop picture and program images in the background. - 3rd laptop: I restarted laptop again in a dark room and the uneven back lighting was so obvious. I never had that in my previous laptop (Sony, Apple, HP). It confirmed my observation the quality of screen back lighting wasn't up to the qaulity. But I have to make it clear that after windows started, the screen view seemed very fine. I'm not a hardware expert and don't know if/how serious the screen back-lighting issue would impact the overall screen life. Is this back-lighting issue considered a defect? Would appreciate any professional answer. Kudo to Best Buy customer service and Geed Squad. I received great customer service along the way.

I purchased this for my daughter. She liked that it was a smaller sized laptop and could fit it in her backpack. My first impression was that the screen resolution and color is great. I like the keyboard layout and feel. It's got all the connections you need. Once I started loading software though, I found the bottle neck. This has a Seagate Mobile HDD 1TB model ST1000LM035. This drive gets good reviews, but it was slow. Constantly reading/writing. Boot time was a couple minutes and apps pulled up slowly. I ended up buying a Samsung 850 EVO and cloned the drive. What a difference. It boots up in 30 seconds or less. Apps pull up instantly. Overall, I rate this a very good laptop. I'm docking it 1 star since I had to spend the time and money to upgrade the drive.

    A Nice Notebook EVENTUALLY!

Best Buy does a great job with their selection of notebooks and quick delivery, and price is great as well. This one was a bargain on a One Day 'Deal of the Day'. The computer arrived quickly and in superb shape. This will be my LAST ASUS notebook. This one was a nightmare. The basic unit is very nice, but the hard drive is a piece of garbage, making you either live with it (being slow as a turtle), or upgrade to an Solid State Drive. I have been working on computers for 25 years, and this is the WORSE machine I have ever had to upgrade. It will accomodate 2 hard drives (one being a stick drive/M.2 2280). You have to almost destroy this computer to upgrade, with 4 ribbon cables under the keyboard having to be removed to upgrade the SATA drive. But then, once that is accomplished, you will have to REMOVE the entire motherboard to add the M.2 drive and another 8 GB of PC4 memory (8 GB is built on the board). Even for an experienced computer geek, getting this back together in one piece and having it work is quite a job. I got it upgraded and back together, and it runs very nicely. But I suggest that you either have GEEK SQUAD do the work, or buy a different brand (the latter is suggested). There is NO EXCUSE for a manufacturer to build a computer that is this complicated for upgrade, especially at premium prices. This is my LAST ASUS as stated before. There is also NO WAY a user can tolerate this computer as shipped (a terrible hard drive and only 8 GB of memory). I hope this will help others. I did read a lot of the reviews on this computer before I purchased, and they are ALL true. Buyer Beware!

Around Xmas time, I got this laptop on sale for $479.99 and final price after tax was $518.39. For the price, specs and features you can't go wrong! It's touchscreen and folds up into a tablet if you want to use it like that. Has Intel 8th Gen Core i5 processor, 1 TB of storage, Harmon/Kardon speakers, 14'' touchscreen, 3 USB ports, a 3.0 USB port and HDMI port. I bought it as a gift for my wife, she has enrolled back into college to get her masters and is taking classes online. I kinda wish I bought this for myself actually thats how much I like it. It is definitely great buy if you dont want to spend thousands on a laptop.

The design and build quality of this laptop looks nice and more expensive than it actually is. I feel that the pc/tablet mode feature and the appropriate sizing makes this laptop both versatile and fun to use. However, It does take some getting use to turning this laptop on using the small button on the right side. The reason why I am giving this a 4 out of 5 stars is that I have a similar laptop with an older intel i5, 8gb memory and ssd hardrive which works a bit faster than this laptop; and this laptop also appears to have a built in battery.

Screen is excellent and touchscreen responsiveness and accuracy are very good.. Performance overall is very good. Is very light yet sturdy. It does take a while to startup, but disk activity seems to be normal after that. Certainly purchasing an SSD would be a big plus. Battery life is subpar, so we keep the power cable close by. Hinge seems to be very sturdy. Sufficient number of ports. Even with negatives, would still recommend.

I bought this laptop for $322 (open-box, fair condition). Cons: 1. Fn + F3/F4 for backlit keyboard does not work under Windows 10, even after the latest upgrade. 2. Installing SSD is troublesome because of design. Have to unscrew all screws and remove keyboard side. There are three ribbon cables (keyboard, touchpad, display) that need to be removed and reinserted carefully. For other models (e.g. Lenovo ThinkPad), it's much easier to swap hard drive. Pros: 1. Great build quality. All metal. Keyboard use conventional layout. Very pleasant to type on. I wouldn't say it is as well built as my wife's Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon X1, but it is definitely way ahead of my old Lenovo IdeaPad 710S. 2. Touch screen is great. The pen costs extra money which I didn't order. 3. Linux friendly - Installing Ubuntu 18.10 is a breeze. - Everything works under Ubuntu, including Fn + F3/F4 to activate keyboard backlit - Gnome Tweaks work well. I configured things like right-click by clicking on lower right of touchpad. For $322 this laptop is a fantastic value. Strongly recommend to swap out HHD. SSD makes the laptop much quieter. (no more clicking sound from the mechanical spin of hard drive)

Good investment for my son. I was initially considering a Chrome Book, but I couldn't pass up the chance for a i5 8GB 1TB laptop at this price...200 more than a top of the line Chrome book. The rest of us in the house are a bit envious...I got a 3 year Best Buy protection so I hopefully will have nothing but good reviews.

Very good laptop. It’s sleek with lots of features. The touch screen is responsive without delay. Plenty space for storage with the 1TB hard drive. It’s fast and you can open multiple applications without compromising speeds. Overall, great for the price.

I didn't want to spend too much on a laptop but I needed one with a minimum Intel Core i5 and 8GB of Memory. I had purchased a cheap $200 Dell Laptop before and that was a huge mistake as it was too slow. This one is much faster but it's still slower than I expected. I know that Laptops are much slower than desktops with the same specs but I really am surprised at the difference. At under $400 though, I probably shouldn't complain too much since it does do what I needed it to do, and I would Recommend it as long as it remains under $400. The next laptop I purchased though will be one that includes an Intel Core i7 with probably 16GB minimum of Ram.

Researched thoroughly buying a new laptop to replace an aging Mac desktop before deciding on the ASUS model. I'm enjoying using it: great resolution, quick start-up, 4+ hours of battery life, lots of storage space. No complaints after this first month of owning it. Purchased for around $700, so a great value for a computer with an 8th gen chip (I5) and 8G of RAM.

SLOW PAINFUL UPDATES - Then... not so bad.

The initial update process was incredibly slow and painful, push past that and I think you'll be pleased overall with this unit. It's snappy enough, considering it's got a rotational drive in it. You can't really get that much storage in a solid state unit without breaking the bank, and I wasn't trying to do that. It seems like the hinge is well made, and it works well with that new Bamboo stylus. It's a fairly light weight design, and if I really only have two gripes about it... 1, the battery could last longer, that would be fantastic, I get a few hours of use and feel like it should be more. Maybe that'll work itself out, I've only had it a few weeks. 2, the buttons on the side suck. I don't like the "power" button and volume buttons where they are, I bump them in tablet mode, I have trained myself a bit to keep them turned the other way, but for me, they are in the wrong spot.

It does the job only problem is that it's slow sometimes. The first couple days it was slowed and froze on me but it's still a decent laptop for the price and the touch is a neat features as well and I thought I wouldn't like it.

For the price it was a good deal, only drawback was it did not have a solid-state drive. Replacye the drive and everything works fine now. The original drive was a little loud, and of course not not as the solid-state drive.

this is a decent laptop, with decent speed. If you were looking for a budget machine which is decently priced with medium specs, this is a good purchase for you. the touchpad left and right mouse clicks are a little unresponsive. It's a little slow to boot as compared to an SSD drive. but if you are used to a mechanical hard drive you will not notice the speed difference. My advice is if you have the money Asus is an amazing brand and I have had several laptops previous... I would spend the extra money to buy the bigger processor and one with an incorporated SSD drive.
