    Solid Motherboard

This motherboard makes for a solid all around mid to high range computer build. I've paired it with a 13700kf and 2x16gb DDR5 7000 ram. I actually bought 7200 ram but on the box, it says this motherboard maxes out at 7000. I verified this by struggling to get 7200 stable for a long time before realizing it wasn't supported. I was getting persistent game crashing and one blue screen until I knocked it down one notch to 7000 and now it's perfectly stable. Not the motherboards fault, just user error. However, it is worth noting that it doesn't seem to support the absolute fastest ram which is probably not necessary anyway. Overall, the motherboard is well made and I especially love the tool-less/screw-less m.2 drive installation. Made for a quick and easy building process. The heat shielding for the m.2 drives is a nice touch, albeit likely unnecessary. It comes with sticky thermal pads pre installed; you simply peel and install over the drives. It can be a bit finicky if you don't place it perfectly and it sticks so now you're trying to rip it off of your drives without damaging them to get it seated properly, but it's not the end of the world. Because 13th gen Intel runs so hot I haven't tried overclocking, but I'd imagine this board would handle a modest overclock. The stock performance is already good enough for me that I'm not sure I'll try. I would definitely recommend this motherboard for an i5 or i7 build and I'm sure it would work with an i9. But if you're spending that much anyway, I would probably get a different motherboard with more overkill vrm.

Excellent value for a Z790 DDR5 motherboard. Having 4 M.2 slots is great. I'm using 3 of them. No more SATA silliness with all the cables. Runs an i5 13600k with a slight overclock fine.

Slick looking, but bulky and heavy

Aesthetically pleasing but bulky and heavy M/O. Couldn't get the 13th GEN CPU to operate which is was expected on a buggy GEN so never so its full potential. However, it had solid framing on the slots, but there is some concern to scratching hardware on those metal trim slot frames. Wish everything worked cohesively so I could have provided a much better review.

Asus Prime Z790-A WiFi good but expensive

The Asus Prime Z790-A WiFi is a competent and solid motherboard that gets what I needed done with few extras, a few problems and for an unimpressive price. I needed a 13th Gen Intel-capable motherboard. Z690 motherboards that allow CPU-less BIOS updates (needed for Gen 13 install) are almost as expensive as this was. I also wanted a better-than-basic audio CODEC. So I spent a bit more to get a few fewer features to avoid some potential hassle and get the audio feature that was important to me. Unfortunately, the Windows 11 install hit a brick wall at Network Setup. If it can’t find a network (due to no drivers), it doesn’t give you any options other than a ghosted “NEXT” button. Luckily, there’s a web address. You have to use something like ctl-F12 to open up a command prompt and run some commands that won’t end up working. I realized the install screen looked like a windows desktop. I was able to ctl-alt-delete and then run explorer. From there I browsed to where I needed to be and double-clicked on the Asus network driver install utility and everything worked fine from that point on. With default settings, everything worked great. Solid and snappy. Unfortunately, my Scythe Fuma 2 isn't quite capable of dissipating the 250 watts of full-throttle heat. Through the windows tweaking utility and BIOS settings, I was able to reduce the CPU voltage to the point no throttling occurs. The process would be easier if the BIOS structure was more like the AI Suite app. But I'm glad the options are there. Finally, there’s severe mouse stuttering during USB Drive access. The PC is basically unusable while you are transferring files from a USB drive. I expect that problem to be resolved in a future BIOS update. I’m on version 0602 dated 2022-09-21.

I like the clean white look of the motherboard, it pairs well with RGB lights. I was able to use my i9 13900k on boot up just fine. I did however have network driver issues when installing windows 11. The motherboard was unable to detect any ethernet connection nor wifi connection. I had to boot up the greeting page with a special command in CMD.

I bought this motherboard. Installed my self and the first one was defective out of the box. I had to return it. And the process to return was the difficult part. I had to speak to two different employees. Someone thru the geek squad and someone with the asus brand themselves. Luckily the guy who tlked to me at Best Buy was having a bad day and just swapped it out and it’s worked great ever since.

i9 13900k runs a lil hot, but the bios on this board gives me plenty settings to adjust it to cooler parameters. The FOUR m.2 slots are perfect for fast storage! The rgb lighting connections are plentiful and reliable. So.. just buy it.

A Solid Workhorse for Most, ASUS PRIME Z790-A WIFI

    |
    |
Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.

The ASUS PRIME Z790-A WIFI motherboard, while not a showstopper, gets the job done. It's a reliable, no-frills option for those looking to upgrade their desktop setup. The LGA 1700 socket is future-proof, and USB 3.2 support is a nice touch. However, it lacks some of the bells and whistles you might find in pricier alternatives. Don't expect groundbreaking performance, but if you need a dependable, mid-range motherboard without breaking the bank, the PRIME Z790-A WIFI is a sensible choice.
