The performance for the price is crazy. You get a max tgp 4080 and the best laptop intel CPU possible. It feels and looks great. This laptop destroys every game. Now for the downside. QC. A lot of people have reported backlight bleeding and coil whine. While I personally haven't noticed any coil whine, there is some backlight bleeding. While a lot of the reviews are misleading (due to not knowing the difference between ips glow and not turning down their camera's exposure to accurately represent the backlight bleeding in dark pictures) it is definitely an issue. I attached an accurate picture of my backlight bleed where I turned down the ISO and speed in pro mode on my camera until mostly represented what I see in real life with my laptop screen brightness at 70% (about 350 nits) viewed in a dark room. Only the areas in red are backlight bleed the rest only appears on camera or is ips glow that is very minimal in person. Other than that backlight bleed issue the screen looks amazing and I will still give it 4 stars because I believe the performance deserves that much. While the laptop is an amazing deal for the hardware, I'm still paying 2500 before tax and at that price I expect a higher standard of QC from ASUS.

    Ridiculously Good Laptop

From what I noticed, a lot of the bad reviews are from the initial batches- I ordered mine in late July and I have ZERO of the major issues. Coil whine is just barely there, but the fans drown it out. (The coil whine issue was apparently fixed by a better power supply revision- if your power brick has an extra plastic sticker over the ROG logo, you have the better power brick). The screen has some bleed, but its not OLED, so all laptop screens have bleed. My unit isnt egregious from past laptops I've owned. The CPU does run warm, about 90c even when undervolted and using a cooling pad, but the gpu doesnt really go above 80c. The webcam is meh, and the speakers are maybe slightly above average. I really don't have many complaints in the month I've used it daily gaming. The 16:10 screen is pretty much the best I've seen excluding OLEDs when it comes to color accuracy. For the price I'd definitely recommend it since its one of the cheapest max tdp 4080 laptops that dont feel like cheap trash. Also keep an eye open for sales. I bought mine when it was 2499$ but it was on sale for 2099$ last week. Upgrading is also very easy. There is no ribbon cable for the rgb strip like there was on the 2022 models and you can easily add an m.2 ssd or upgrade ram- since 16gb is just too low these days unless you are ONLY gaming. Definitely my favorite laptop I've owned so far

My wife and I gave each other one of this laptop for our anniversary and we love them. The screen does produce very good colors and is super bright and crisp. The specs are great, possibly the best at the price point, so it's a really good value. However, 16GB of ram was hardly enough, so we upgraded them to 32GB ourselves and it was super easy, also added a 2TB NVMe drive in the empty M.2 slot. Overall the laptop is fast, a lot lighter than we expected, but it can get loud if you set CPU to Turbo and GPU to Ultimate settings. Temperature does stay relatively cool and never thermal throttles. The most difficult thing about owning this laptop was finding a good laptop bag that would fit it nicely, we ordered the ASUSROG BP2701 bag and it fits like a glove. I don't think you can get a better laptop for cheaper when it is on sale for $2199, and even the regular 2499 price is a good value!

Large bright screen makes gaming so fun also has good speakers for a laptop. Very little back light bleed on mine. Supper fast gpu. Build quality is good, feels solid. Adding a second SSD was easy. Cooling is great. Only negatives are occasional coil whine but the fan or game sounds cover it up and the Armory Crate settings sometimes gets messed up after waking from sleep and the laptop needs to be restarted to get RGB lights and fan profile working correct again.

Runs pretty cool at 80C/85C, GPU/CPU both running at 175W/70W during gaming, for this much power this is good. Performance is great, this is about 30-40% faster than my desktop 3070. In Cyberpunk I get around 55 fps on ray tracing ultra preset, on this I get 78 fps. Shadow of Tomb Raider its 120 fps vs 156 fps, so yeah, its a hunge improvement. This puts it at around a 3080 desktop level for a laptop. Some issues are the backlight bleed, its a bit extreme, but I noticed it has gotten a little better with use. It may be that the heat from the screen is alleviating the pressure. I got another one at the same time to compare side by side and both had the glow issue, this is probably due to too much pressure on the display during assembly. Performance is just Epic, I get ~32,000 cinebench score multi core and ~2000 single core, timespy is a solid 18,600. You can undervolt after updating to bios 307, I have mine set to 50mw. However it does have some PROBLEMS. Advanced optimus is jank, sometimes it will not switch to dgpu mode when gaming, and when it does it takes a while and you are stuck with a black screen. When you change to dgpu mode only the laptop will randomly lose the ability to change brightness and you have to switch it to hybrid mode to fix it. This is a pain and enough for me to want to return it. Also DSR FACTORS are missing from the nvidia control panel, not sure if this is due to nvidia drivers or the laptop itself. Fresh install did not fix it. There are also alot of random freezes that require you to hold down the power button to restart the laptop. As far as UPGRADEABILITY goes, I tried 64GB of Samsung 2R8 DDR5 and it did not work, I upgrade to Crucial 32GB DDR5 and that did work fine. Just be aware that the first bootup with new ram might take a bit longer than usual, don’t be scared if you see a black screen for 2-5 minutes. This is by no means “cheap”, but compared to Alienware, Razer, and MSI’s $3500 4080 laptops this is more affordable. However random lock ups, buggy advanced optimus, terrible backlight bleed make this a questionable purchase at best.

Upgraded from a Dell XPS 15 with overheating issues. I wanted a laptop that could effectively handle work, hobbies, and play. I work with large Excel spreadsheets with VBA and complex formulas so I need plenty of horsepower, I like to record videos on my gopro 360 so I needed something that can handle Adobe Premier Pro with ease, and I enjoy blowing off some steam and playing video games so I needed something with a great GPU. I also travel a lot so I need something I can take abroad. This laptop so far checks all those boxes and I am very happy. The package was delivered quickly and on time and was in good shape. I would buy from this seller again!

This laptop is powerful as it comes, but I definitely recommend planning on getting a secondary storage drive. But that shouldn't be an issue with the addition of a additional M.2 storage slot. (You could always just go external) Another upgrade that you should definitely consider is that of the system's RAM. This laptop can easily consume more than half of its 16gbs just chilling with nothing but ASUS Armoury create running in the background. I would recommend swapping the two 8gb RAM dims (16gb) out for a kit of two 16gb dims, for the maximum amount of 32gbs of RAM that the system can take. I really want to recommend this laptop and give it a five star rating on here but I just can't, not just because of the ram utilization issues, but its also not a smooth user experience in general. Just a few days ago, I started my laptop up and noticed a notification from Armoury Crate telling me that the system needs to restart and update. and I instantly (regretfully) clicked on the "restart now" option. This was a huge mistake as it instantly started a bios update, I didnt instantly panic but I thought to myself "what if it bricks itself right now haha...no way". And as I watched it complete the update, it literally black screened and only showed the powered on light, no disk activity light or display light... After looking at a black screen for 10 minutes straight, I began to panic and look up online for any issues with the new bios version that I just updated to and I found absolutely nothing. After about another 20 minutes as I was mid-research on fixes to my problem I heard the ROG Boot Sound play from the laptop. And to my amazement the laptop was booting up and it actually loaded into windows! But this wasn't the end of the issues, I noticed that my performance while gaming was actually cut down to about 20% in every modern game. After about 36 hours of troubleshooting, I decided to reinstall my Nvidia Graphics Driver and oh boy did this help, I went from legit 20 FPS w/ dips down to 1fps back to 110 fps on FC6... (Maxed out ofc) Long story short, I wouldn't and wont from now on trust Asus with their auto updates, and if you are planning on getting this laptop, please consider doing atleast a RAM upgrade in the near future (its not that hard). At the time of writing this review my system is running perfectly fine now with the latest bios and Amoury Crate versions. (~ 4-5 weeks of ownership at writing)

The laptop was bought as a gift to my boyfriend. I bought it because it's beautiful and I liked the backlight (girls are such girls) but the laptop heats up fast and the charge of the device quickly sits down. You always have to keep it plugged in. I understand that this is a gaming laptop and that it pulls heavy games. If to be honest I expected more..

I purchased this laptop to do heavy AI applications. I upgraded to 64GB of RAM and 2TB SSD to get the ultimate beast. This laptop is pure performance. At the beginning I ran into few BIOS update hurdles that solved by themselves without me doing anything (Just let the computer do its thing, she knows what she's doing). Nothing to complain about. It delivers. The Strix 18 is a sweetspot in terms of performance to price ratio. I wasn't willing to spend and additional $1,500-ish just for the Scar and its 4090, for a mere +15% in GPU performance. The Strix 18 and Strix Scar 18 have the same specs except for the GPU, so you are having a good deal for sure.

You can ignore most of the backlight bleed/ips glow photos on here since phone pictures make it look far worse than it actually is, my picture included as I can really only see it on darker static backrounds Great performance, thermals rarely go above 70C in games and on 10 minute stress test 84c was the high. The fans are much less noisy than the lenovo or corsair laptops ive tried. My only gripe is the top right corner of the display has a good amout of bleed and the top of the display seems odly curved.

On the bright side, the i9-13980HX+RTX4080 on a 18 inch laptop perform like a beast. The thermal is well controlled when you manually increase the fan speed (The presets in Armoury Crate maintain the CPU and GPU temperature merely below the thermal limit, for the purpose of reduce fan noise). The QHD panel looks fantastic since it is factory calibrated, also with its 240Hz refresh rate, which feels smooth in every game that can utilize such high refresh rate. HOWEVER, it is just impossible to avoid LED backlight leak on all gaming laptop, this one also has this issue mostly around the corners and sides, (I guess that’s just a thing people have to accomodate. I used to have a zephyrus m16 and it also have backlight leak. It will depend on luck regarding the amount of leaking). IN ADDITION, just like people’s complain on the internet, the electric noise on this model is also inevitable, including other strix models as well. The electric noise is super annoying when the laptop is at idle, and it will make even more noticible sound when you are moving your cursor (basically if you add some loads to the cpu and gpu, the electric noise will come up). Even though Asus claim it is a normal phenomenon on all high-performance gaming laptop, I say give it a try yourself and see whether you can accept it or not. LAST but NOT LEAST, I don’t know if it is a driver issue or hardware problem, when you open certain game or softwares while using direct GPU output instead of hybrid mode (for me it is Rainbow Six Siege running on Vulkan), there will be screen blinking on the right side of the panel, and then the video driver will crash followed by a black screen, and you will have to restart the system to restore it. I hope it is a issue that can be fixed by Nvidia video driver or Bios updates, otherwise Asus really has to come up with a solution to improve their quality control. In summary, the overall performance is great, but there are just too much small problems that adds up to challenge customer’s patience when you spend over 2.5k on a gaming laptop.

Im writing this review coming off of last years Asus rog i9 with a 3070 and 2k 165hz screen. This years G18 is better in every single way. First - heat issues… there are none. Last years model was slimmer (16 inch screen then) and you could definitely notice the build up. So far while gaming on maxed out settings, the CPU stays at 70 and the GPU at 50. If you max out the graphics, the temps remain the same but you will hear the fan kick up. As far as issues of coil whine, it appears they have fixed the issue with the newest models, at least mine. After a week i haven’t noticed any, but when I maxed out ray tracing and turned the fans down i did hear a slight mechanical sound. I’d say if you had ANY form of ambient noise in the room you would never hear it. My other concern based off of earlier reviews was the screen and bleeding issues. I’m very OCD with that type of thing and i wouldn’t be able to enjoy the laptop if that existed. Luckily I can say that the 2k 18 inch screen is the star of the show. Great colors and contrast, the extra 2 inches really makes a huge difference if this is a desktop replacement for you. The blacks don’t hit quite like my OLED TV, but I can tell you the screen is better than any other high end gaming laptop ive owned and I upgrade every year. I need to test more games but so far this thing is beating out my 3080 Alienware Desktop so for $2100 at the sale price i couldnt be happier.

Absolute beast of a laptop! I swapped out the 8GBx2 sticks of RAM for 16GBx2 and added a 2TB SSD very easily having never opened a laptop before. Build quality feels nice and it isn't terribly loud under heavy graphics load. I went with ASUS ROG because I still have one from 2009 that turns on and runs well today.

I was super hyped for this laptop. The performance of the laptop lives up to that hype, getting about 60 fps on Cyberpunk 2077 without frame generation with frame generation about 85ish (at max settings including the Psycho settings). Hogwarts Legacy looks amazing at about 120 fps with frame generation (ultra settings) as well in the open areas, gonna have to play more of that game to see how it does. However, I enjoy darker looking games probably the most, Dead Space, The Callisto Protocol, Devour, Labyrinthine, and some others. And I’m not sure if it’s normal but I have terribly bright corners on the devices screen, I’ll attach pictures with lights on and in low light, I do know that cameras overexpose that brightness. But playing horror games or darker games in general feels like playing with a bright/negative vignette setting. Other than the screen issues, I’ve some common issues on setup and automatic updates happening where the computer would shut off randomly without warning and restart. Coil whine does exist on this device under load but it’s common for the higher end gpus… albeit not terrible, but some of the other reviewers mentioned a weird sound like a static-y electronic low res noise. I thought it was my headphones but I took them off and heard it, it was not coil whine and I have no idea what it was, it wasn’t consistent and didn’t stay long, this was during idle/web browsing. Temperatures are pretty nice CPU under load around 80 degrees Celsius and GPU under load was around 70-72ish degrees Celsius. Other notes about frame generation to those new to the 4000 series cards, this setting has given me some input lag, it’s there but not terrible or unplayable by any means, more useful than bad. Very happy about the MUX switch for the computer which amps up the systems performance. (Have to select ultimate GPU mode in Armory Crate software) I’ve had the laptop for a day as of writing this and was purchased on March 2nd.

I wish i could give a seperate rating for the store i picked it up at. Overall the laptop is a machine. I got lucky and got one with not alot of backlight bleed. Got everything updated and it ran amazing. Highly recommend it. The open box was a an excellent like new condition. I had a friend pick it up and once i got it i noticed the brick was just threw on top of the laptop and once i removed it from the wrapping the laptop had some junk on the lid, keyboard and screen. It was like a bunch of kids got to eat some greasy pizza and rubbed all over the thing. I was able to fully clean it and once that was done it looked new. Not sure what was on it but it was pretty disappointing to see an excellent like new laptop look like that. I would hate to see a lower tier.

I have nothing bad to say about this laptop other than the fact that it’s a big large, but that’s what you sign up for when getting an 18” 240hz screen with a powerhouse of a GPU and CPU. Compared to my old 2022 ROG Strix advantage edition with 5900HX and 6900m, it’s about double the frame rates in nearly everything. The benchmarks on it are no slouch as well, putting down about 21k on 3DMark Time Spy, compared to about 11k on my advantage edition. I’ve had literally one graphics crash of this laptop, but I blame Halo infinite since it’s not very optimized. I can encode videos and render basically anything as if this were a 4070 tower PC with an intel 13700k. The 4090 version does 10-15% better in most 1440p applications, but 1080 you’ll barely notice a difference. Best bang for the buck in my opinion, especially since I got it this under $2k price tag for cyber Monday last year. Again, the only downside is the size of this beast, but it’s worth it.
