Can Asus redeem itself?

Recently had a critical motherboard failure that finally completely failed on WoW launch day (!). I decided to upgrade (read: desperate for whatever was available) and went with a 10900k and a much cheaper motherboard at first from Best Buy. Of course that board failed with a bad CPU socket so after returning it to the store I decided to unhinge my wallet and settle on a upper mid / lower top tier board with the Asus ROG STRIX.
I'm not a big fan of Asus. I used to be, but my previous experience with their boards years ago on numerous occasions was not great from DOA boards to early failures but this was basically all our local Best Buy had so I figured I might as well give it a shot.
Quality packaging, good BIOS. It has some RGB, but that never dictates my buying decisions. Solidly built. Good manual and excellent layout. I go for minimalist layouts when possible.
Built in NVMe heatsink is a plus as my Samsung 970 Pro gets rather toasty (85+ on the controller) without one.
I paired it with the 10900k (also from Best Buy) and everything worked fine including with some G.Skill 4000 B-Die XMP memory right out of the box and an FE 3090.
The board reported a good SP and an expected "extreme overclock" of ~45%. Setting AI and it runs @ 5.3ghz+ all cores right out of the box so that's nice. I'll fine tune it down the road, but right now it's all about getting back into WoW and playing catchup having missed launch week.
Asus already has a beta BAR enabled BIOS up for enhanced GPU performance so that's a plus too.
Time will tell if Asus re-enters my list of recommended motherboards. Early signs say yes.

Great hardware but buggy horrible software support

This was my first Asus MOBO purchase as I heard about their legendary quality. The lighting accents and build quality turned out to live up to Asus's reputation. I am veryu happy on that front with my purchase.
The downside to Asus is the Armoury Crate software which is a horrible piece of trash software. MSI's utility software actually works in helping you to quickly identify if any of your drivers are out of date.
Asus Armoury Crate can't even do that correctly. Furthermore when you try to update one of the drivers it gets stuck at 55%. A quick search of their forums shows that many others have the same issue with no response from Asus at all!
When I manually go to their website to download and isntall the chipset drivers like the old way, the latest chipset driver doesn't even install any drivers! I have to go to the previous release tin finally get all the correct drivers installed.
The software side of Asus is a absolute mess. It is like a bunch of genius hardware engineers founded this company and then hired software engineers from Craigslist. The AI overclock feature is horrible and doesn't work either. I had to tinker with some of the settings to get my system to a stable overclock.
If you are a competant PC gamer who knows their stuff then this is a awesome MOBO. If you are somewhat newish to OC and are expecting some automation settings to set a comfortable overcloc, then this board is absolutely not for you.

Rivals higher priced gaming motherboards

I've been using Asus motherboards since I built my first PC back in the 1990s. I've never been disappointed with their quality.
When I started buying components for my newest PC, I researched the Asus ROG Strix Z490-E Intel motherboard online, and it had very high ratings. It's far more inexpensive than some of theirs and other gaming boards, but packs a lot of punch for its price. I purchased it for less than $300, and so far I'm impressed.
First off, I should mention that I'm not a traditional gamer, and am using this computer primarily for my work using the entire suite of Adobe Creative Cloud apps. I needed something that could process my work quickly and with not much effort. So far, I haven't encountered any delays with rendering time or motion graphics processing.
Now on to some of the main features and specifications.
- This motherboard is designed to work with Intel 10th Gen processors. It is not backward compatible with 9th Gen. I paired my board with an Intel Core i7 10700 Series. It works great, and I haven't experienced any issues with CPU overheating.
- 10 rear USB ports on back and 7 in front, plenty for anything you might want to plug in.
- Dual band wi-fi - supports 2.45GHz and 5Ghz. It comes with an antenna, connected to 2 wi-fi ports. I'm using 5G.
- Supports Bluetooth 5.1. I use this for my speakers and earbuds.
- Optional graphics are built in with HDMI port. I'm using a Gigabyte GeForce NVidia card, so I haven't tested its capabilities.
- Two slots for M.2 SSD hard drives and 6 SATA ports. I'm using a WD 1TB M.2 drive with a built-in heatsink. There was some trouble locating the slots because they're under two removable shields, one of which I couldn't replace due to the depth of the drive/heatsink. Works fine without it. Be sure to affix an included screw to keep each SSD in place.
- Onboard Realtek sound. I'm having difficulties with noticeable feedback where my older Bose Wave/CD system connects on the back. Prior to using the Bose, I had a 2 speaker + subwoofer setup (2.1), but the Realtek software wouldn't recognize the subwoofer, gave output to the 2 speakers only and sounded tinny. Since then, I've ordered a Bluetooth speaker system to hopefully alleviate the problem. It's annoying and getting pricey!
- Capabilities for running many fans - six plus the CPU fan/water pump. Asus has bundled Fan X-pert for controlling fan speeds within the BIOS which allows for lots of fine tuning. I should mention that I'm using a Corsair case with 3 fans, and had some trouble finding enough fan headers of the same type on the board. I found a workaround which works well: I used the 2 fan headers and plugged the other into the adjacent water pump header. I had purchased a 3 fan splitter but found it an unnecessary expenditure, and all 3 fans spin at the same rate. I also installed a rear fan just to be sure, and haven't needed to use the included small heatsink fan.
- A handy LED Q-Code display to help you diagnose and fix any issue you might have, including healthy operations. The User Guide contains 4 pages of codes!
Aside from the sound problem, I'm pleased with my purchase. You could spend a lot more for a motherboard, but this one has just about everything the higher-priced ones have.

Good Motherboard, Too Much ASUS Bloatware

As far as the quality of the motherboard is concerned, it's a good deal for the price. Unfortunately, you also have to deal with ASUS' bloated software package (more on that below).
My Z490-E is currently powering a 10700k and a 3080Ti. Setup was easy and the features provided on the board are great. The only issue I've had is ASUS' suite of software tools was causing system instability (freezes/hangs) when waking my PC. Once all of their software was removed, it resolved all of my issues. The sheer amount of ASUS bloatware does give me some hesitation to get another ASUS board in the future, but for now I'm content with this one.

I think it’s a great motherboard. It’s easy to put in and set up. You need to put the little fan it comes with in yourself but obviously that won’t be too hard since your a computer builder. It has an extra 4 pin connector for the CPU for extreme overclocking. But this is optional. As long as you have the 8 pin connected you will be fine. I have the i9-10900k. So far I haven’t gotten any problems. Definitely a very high end motherboard.

Overall amazing board. Looks amazing and performs well. Comes equipped with USB ports, wifi, Bluetooth as well as many fan headers to connect your case fans directly to this motherboard. Also the armory crate software pre-installed makes installation of drivers much simpler.

Had issues installing the armory and establishing the fan control thru windows. Otherwise, colors are nice, bios cool, works seemlessly and with little to no input from me without overclocking, so far, it's so fast with the i9 10 core that I see no need to push the limits when I can't forsee needing to see the limits for quite some time. Very satisfied. (Don't get me started with the absolutely horrible Nvidia 3080 availability or lack thereof at present time, is inexcusable and has created a universe of over priced video cards to price gouge good customers through the lack of availability of said cards, not best buys issue, thou we are victimized, or asus or intel, has me interested in AMD and other options for any further systems due to the core advancement AMD has overcome and advanced with) peace.**(please notice voodoo doll in place for anyone hindering video card purchase beyond February which is 6 months since the 3080 Nvidia cards came out and are not yet available without overpaying or waiting in endless phantom lines never to be called for my turn, fix this issue please, sorry for using Asus Strix for my platform for spouting off).

Board works and has everything feature that was important to me. My only issue with the board is cosmetic. While removing the m.2 cover I noticed that the coating on the armor/shielding is peeling off. I may end up stripping the coating to paint down the road so I won’t be returning for this defect. Hopefully mine was an isolated incident and this is common for other owners.

I've owned for about a week and it has been running flawlessly, for anyone on the fence about this mobo like I was for weeks I'd say pull the trigger. I was worried about the issues with the i225-v ethernet, when I first booted it wasn't recognizing an ethernet cable although it was connect. All I did was connect via wifi and googled intel ethernet drivers and downloaded and installed the drivers and it's worked great. Not once has it dropped or have I had issues on a cold boot. Great mobo all around, a little tight in a mid tower case with a top mounted cooler but it can fit.

I'm in love with this board. It has everything that the Maximus does with the exception if a couple things at about half the price! Easy to install in my case and the user manual is the most detailed compared to MSI. RGB sync thru armory crate is simple and easy to use. BIOS took a little getting used to compared to MSI but everything else was easy.
