So shipping box was good, the box that the laptop came in was broken, box was open, don’t understand why they charge for new if it’s open box. Open box was cheaper, much cheaper… since it’s a gift how would I give it now… i guess going to have to deal with but be careful

I changed the OS from Windows 11 S to Windows 11 Home and it has been a very bad experience. It has not allowed me to Update Windows and I am now stuck in an on screen "Death Spiral" with the computer stating "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry-undoing changes. Please keep your computer on". This has now been on my screen for over an hour and I can't reach anyone at ASUS to help me with this problem. If someone reads this at either ASUS or Best Buy I would appreciate some help!

      Dear Scott,

We do understand your concern regarding Windows 11 S mode and the inconvenience this may have caused if third-party software or applications cannot be installed.

WINDOWS 11 S mode was intended for speed, simplicity and security. Only applications available at the Microsoft Store are allowed to be installed. In order to install third-party applications, the OS needs to be switched to WINDOWS 11 HOME in order to installed third-party applications. To successfully switch, WINDOWS 11 S needs to be setup completely and activated online. Once this is completed, please go to Settings, Activation then click "Go to Store" and follow the wizard in order to switch the OS free. Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

I got this for about $250 all in. At this price it was a steal. Computers is all about price vs. what you get, so I'll review it with that in mind. Obviously this isn't going to be in competition with machines 4x the price. Pros vs. other similarly priced options: real CPU, 8gb ram, real SSD (vs slow eMMC), windows license Positive surprises: battery life is pretty good, keyboard is fantastic, trackpad is good, pretty well constructed given the cheap-ish plastic used throughout, hinge opens a full 180 degrees, usb ports are fast, webcam is serviceable for video calls and has a physical cover built in. Cons about screen (main con): Screen is pretty bad, seems like a TN panel. Viewing angles are poor. Color accuracy and gamut are poor (rated at 45% NTSC!). Only redeeming quality is that it is 1080p which is nice at 14". Doesn't handle content-adaptive-brightness well, so turn that off if it bothers you. Non-screen cons: - doesn't charge via USBC, so you need to carry around another adapter. - Upgrading ram/SSD looks like it requires working around some adhesives. - If running higher power profiles, the fan can be more audible than I'd like. - speakers are serviceable but pretty weak and don't sound great. Ok for podcasts, but you probably want to plug in headphones for music (which you can do since it has a 3.5mm jack!) neither here nor there: - the numberpad trackpad feature is nifty, but of questionable utility. It works, but its a flat capacitive touch surface so its hard to use without looking which is, imo, the whole point of a numpad. Doesn't really make the product worse but they could have spent that extra dollar on the screen instead. - minimal junk software. I didn't feel the need to reinstall windows. Only pre-installed software is MyASUS (useful imo) and other driver-related control panels. at full price (almost double what I paid), i'd be disappointed, particularly with the screen. For what I actually paid, I like it. If this is going to be your only PC, perhaps spend a bit more on something with a better screen (or spend the money you saved on an external display)

Pick up on sale, not at full MSRP

I bought this to solve a first world problem. Monday-Friday, I telecommute with a company issued laptop and my personal gaming rig class PC in front of me. The way my job goes, I use the corporate laptop for official corporate tasks and interactions e.g. corp email, Slack, Teams, intranet resources and so forth. The personal gaming PC is used to access legacy company assets that are not reachable via the company intranet. While online, I can and do access personal emails and other things on the personal gaming PC. I do keep company and personal things walled off from each other FWIW. That said, on weekends, I do not like to turn on the personal gaming PC just for emails and casual web surfing. Plus I'm kind of sequestered from the rest of the family in the area where the home office is. I bought this Asus unit to be a couch computer so I could do the casual web surfing, email and other pedestrian PC things while not being at the home office location. My overall impression is that this is a decent little unit. As is, it gets on my WIFI without issue. It opens web pages quick and well enough. Definitely fine for casual use. If you wanted to pay bills, look at eBay, watch YouTube videos, carry it for note taking, zoom/WebEx type things, this will be fine. I would happily give this to my college student child or parent as an every day usage unit. Battery life seems decent since it is a low power CPU. I think you could get thru a full work or class day on a charge with modest usage. I did some research and I bought an extra Crucial branded 8GB DDR4 3200 SODIMM and a Crucial 1TB P3 drive. Physically upgrading this device was not bad. Plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to open the unit with a screwdriver and pry tool and upgrade parts. It was more of an effort to create Windows 11 install media and add the requisite chipset Intel RST driver for storage and Mediatek WIFI adapter driver in order to reinstall the OS. The 8GB of RAM is soldered to the system board and cannot be removed. There is a lone SODIMM socket. Once adding the 8GB SODIMM the system went from single channel to dual channel mode. This gives a slight iGPU performance uplift. After upgrading RAM and storage, I took the unit out of Windows 11 S mode from the Windows Store. After a click and a moment, unit went from Windows 11 in S mode, to Windows 11 Home. My daughter played a little bit of Minecraft on it and loaded up a couple of mods. Not sure what gaming will be like but light indie titles like Stardew Valley and such will most likely run on this without issue. I have seen people complain about the numpad/touchpad Asus hybrid pad. I have had no issue with it. I have used it as a numpad and a touchpad and it is fine. There is a "numlock" style button on the touchpad that enables the numpad. I never accidentally or unintentionally enabled it. Also, point of note, that if you use the option in Windows to disable touchpad when a mouse is connected, you can still enable the numpad functionality with the "numlock" button and you can still do numerical input. The touchpad mouse tracking doesn't work as it is disabled but to my delight, the numpad function will still worked if toggled on. Lastly, my only real knock is that at full MSRP, I think the unit is not equipped enough for that MSRP list price. There is no microsd card reader. No touch screen. No backlit keyboard. Granted I knew this going in. However, looking at other units in the MSRP price range, they seem to have more of these features. So purchasing this for a little over half off as a deal of the day I think is a great option. Even if it is getting a little old with a 12th gen Alder lake CPU. At full MSRP, I think you are in a different class of computer with more options. I do recommend this but only on sale.

I recently bought the ASUS Vivobook 14" from Best Buy, and it's been an excellent budget-friendly laptop. The Quiet Blue design is sleek, and the 14-inch screen is the perfect size for portability. Powered by an Intel Core i3-1215U and 8GB of RAM, it handles everyday tasks like browsing, document editing, and streaming without issues. The 128GB SSD ensures quick boot times and responsive performance. Battery life lasts around 6-8 hours, making it ideal for on-the-go use. The keyboard and trackpad are comfortable and responsive. For the price, this laptop offers great value for casual users.

The ASUS Vivobook 14 X1404ZA-I38128 is an impressive laptop that offers a solid performance despite its modest specifications. Designed with the modern user in mind, this Vivobook model is a testament to ASUS's commitment to providing high-quality, budget-friendly options. Design and Build Quality The Vivobook 14 boasts a sleek, lightweight design that makes it perfect for students, professionals, and casual users who need a reliable device on the go. Its 14-inch display offers vibrant colors and sharp visuals, enhancing the overall user experience whether you're working, browsing, or streaming content. Performance Equipped with an Intel Core i3-1220U processor, the Vivobook 14 operates efficiently for everyday tasks. While the base configuration comes with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, these specifications might seem modest at first glance. However, the real strength of this laptop lies in its upgradability. Users can easily upgrade both the RAM and SSD to enhance the laptop's performance, tailoring it to meet more demanding needs over time. Overclocking Potential One of the standout features of the X1404ZA-I38128 model is its potential for CPU overclocking. With the right settings, users can overclock the Intel Core i3-1220P CPU speed upwards to 4.0 GHz. This capability allows the laptop to handle more intensive applications and multitasking with ease, offering a significant performance boost when needed. However, it's important to note that overclocking should be done carefully to avoid overheating and ensure system stability. User Experience The keyboard and touchpad are well-designed, providing a comfortable typing and navigation experience. The array of ports, including USB-C and HDMI, ensures excellent connectivity options for peripherals and external displays. Additionally, the battery life is satisfactory, allowing for extended use without frequent charging. Conclusion In summary, the ASUS Vivobook 14 X1404ZA-I38128 is a versatile and affordable laptop that offers more than meets the eye. Its initial specifications may be on the lower side, but the ease of upgrading RAM and SSD, combined with the potential for CPU overclocking, makes it a compelling choice for users seeking a balance between cost and performance. Whether you're a student, a professional, or someone looking for a reliable secondary device, the Vivobook 14 is a worthy contender in the competitive laptop market. Max RAM 16GB DDR4 + 8GB RAM DDR4 solder in = 24 GB RAM SSD it can go up to 4 TB for the upgrade

I bought this laptop in an emergency due to my previous laptop malfunctioning. I needed a laptop that could provide functionality with nursing school and allow me to finish school with it. This laptop was more than capable of doing so. Using it for assignments, I needed to have multiple tabs open and the laptop was able to handle it with high speed too. The battery is what you expect out of a laptop however I would rank it above average allowing me to complete my 100 question exams (2-3 hours) and then going to the library for assignments with no charger. The display was useful for what was. Its a little on the fuzzy side of HD and having a 14 inch screen made it hard for multi tasking without another monitor. The weight of the laptop too was nice. Didnt feel flimsy but also didnt feel fragile. Overall, I would recommend this laptop when it comes to schooling and for school projects.

This laptop is awesome for being an ultralight laptop. it is very snappy and fast. the 12th gen i3 is powerful but yet energy efficient. at this price point, you would usually end up with laptops that are celeron, chromebooks, etc. this is a full fledge 1080p laptop. easily able to upgrade rams and ssd. great for light use. the screen isn't eye candy but what do you expect?

Bought this one on sale for $199.99 for my wife to use for homeschool. Its small, light, and fast enough to run browsers and Office apps. I'd recommend adding another 8gb of ram in the open slot to get better multitasking performance, but its hard to complain too much about a $200 computer. Also, the BestBuy description is incorrect for the GPU. This unit has the Intel UHD graphics card, not Iris Xe as stated in the specs. Pros: small, light, fast, inexpensive, good battery life. Cons: screen isnt great (narrow viewing angles, lots of washout if not looking straight on), 128gb SSD fills up fast, 8gb RAM is bare minimum for 2025. Overall good laptop for the money. Buy it when it goes in sale.

This is a nice budget workhorse that is a great value when on sale. The nvme SSD, and wifi card are replaceable and the RAM can be expanded with a so So-DIMM module (DDR4 3200). As a kit, it's solid and good quality all around. The biggest negative is the screen and it's viewing angles. Turning up the brightness helps a lot. The I/O ports are the same as other low end ASUS machines with one extra USB type-A 5 Gbps port. The actual performance is better than I expected especially in single threaded and graphical work. I use Linux and as others have noted, the wifi card isn't recognized right now by the system. I replaced it with an Intel 6e card and it works fine. I'm overall very happy with the purchase.

I needed a windows laptop for some random tasks that require a windows OS. Im a mac person and really cant stand windows, so opted to get the cheapest thing I could find. I bought this laptop for $200 bucks. Upgraded it with a 1TB NVME SSD I had lying around and added a 32GB stick of SODIMM DDR RAM. It works really well. It's fast, types easily, is light and just a good all around laptop for windows stuff. It's actually better than a Dell I need to use for a contract job. Get it if you can for the $200 or so price and do a couple upgrades and you're in good shape for under $400.

System does fine. These new intel chips are stronger than expected. The device is slim in design, light weight, it does get hot quickly though. RAM is upgradeable if needed. Unfortunately the BestBuy website lists it with IRIS graphics, it's not, it's intel UHD.

I bought it for $249. I immediately added 16 GB more RAM taking the total to 24 GB. The current passmark for the CPU (Core I3 1215U) is: 11051. I also could get out of the super-restrictive "S" mode. The matte screen is perfect. This not having a touchscreen is a plus in my opinion. Within a day of making the purchase I found that the price had gone down by $20 at the Best Buy website. Best buy did a price match. At this price, this is beyond excellent value for money. I would like to thank: Best Buy: For the smooth purchase experience and for the price match. Microsoft: For not trying to over-complicate the switch-out from S mode. Asus: For providing extensibility (RAM and M.2 NVMe are upgradable). I have been buying Asus for close to a quarter century and I am yet to be disappointed. There are a few negatives, but I can't complain given how inexpensive this is. Here they go: 1. The laptop feels very plasticky. 2. The keyboard is just about OK. But then again, some keyboards cost as much as this laptop.

This is a great starter laptop, especially for students. It does come with a surprisingly fast processor and ample memory to complete most tasks efficiently. I got this laptop for my 8 year old daughter because she was getting frustrated with using a much slower school Chromebook. She loves that this Asus laptop can do everything she wants. Overall, the laptop is well built. It’s mainly plastic, but it holds up well. The screen is not going to be the sharpest, but at this price point, it’s decent. On the other hand, the value is virtually unbeatable. Great price, too.
