So far, I'm pleased with the Asus AC86P. We have several users, and they all reported faster speeds. No drops so far. (It also looks cool, btw... and it's nice that it has a switch to turn off those blue indicator lights on the front) I researched this product for several months... google "Best Wireless Routers for 2016" and you'll get a bunch of review sites... they all pick different ones for "the best" BUT they ALL pick the AC86 as Excellent and in their top tier. The AC86 has an ongoing track record of success and by this time all the bugs have been supposedly worked out. P.S. I talked with somebody who got one for his restaurant, and he said up to 40 (yes forty) people at a time go on it wirelessly... so it'll probably handle your household. BTW the 86-P at BestBuy is the V2---latest version with upgraded processor over the ones at Amazon the R and U versions... so I bought mine at a physical BestBuy store to get the best of the best proven wireless router.

I set this thing up on my xfinity wireless modem. I pay for 120 mps and was getting around 120mps wired, but my wireless was roughly 11mps! I purchased this router after reading reviews and i'm getting around 115+ throughout my apartment. I would recommend to anyone.

I have had 5 different wireless routers over the last 10 years and they all have had the same issues, the coverage is insufficient. I just bought an ASUS RT-AC68P on a recommendation from a friend. It is worth every penny I spent on it. I now have full coverage across the whole house without being dropped. I also now have consistent connectivity throughout the house with out pauses, freezes or drops! If you want a great device buy this one!

This is a great router! Going from an apple AirPort Extreme, it was a nice change of pace to be able to customize all the settings that Apple doesn't allow their consumers access to. I live in a condominium so "wifi wars" occur almost nightly. I've see a clear improvement in our streaming devices; we used to have to turn off some of our tablets or phones when we were streaming movies through our Sony TV or Apple TV. No longer though! I am very pleased with this product and would recommend no matter the platform you prefer (we have both Apple and PC devices throughout). Only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is I think some folks may find this router a little "tech-heavy" and I could see someone getting frustrated with set up, especially if they are coming from the plug-n-play world of Apple.

Noted significant improvement in page and file download speed moving from router with only 2.4 n to this router with 5 ac. Installation by novice (me), did not make any changes to default settings. Did install under Windows. Had to update firmware to stop intermittent cable modem lockups. Have 2 hd tv, 2 iPads, 1 pc with 50 mps service, zero lags or video buffering. Happy with performance and ASUS technical support. Excellent signal strength in next door neighbors home.

I bought this from Best-Buy last week as I was in a neighborhood that had one in stock. The speed and robustness of the router is far better than any of the other routers I have had (LinkSys, Dlink and SMC).
The set up was easy. Plugged it into my cable modem, rebooted everything and the router and modem recognized each other straight away - no need to configure qateways or IP addresses. I used the same WPA pass phrase as the previous router and all my devices were connected.
The reach and bandwidth of the signal is very strong and stable for all B/G/N devices. I don't have any AC devices yet. VPN works - which is essential for access to my company's servers and intranet.
The router interface is so intuitive and is dynamic. When you make a change you see that change immediately - no need to refresh the screen. The network layout, the information it pulls from attached devices and clients is like a mini network management system.
I bought a USB 3.0 external drive, attached it to each device that I wanted to copy the majority of my media files from then plugged it into the router's USB 3.0 slot(Network Attached Storage). The router recognized it. Any additional files I found I just dragged and dropped onto the NAS through the network.
I could go on but so far I am very pleased. It's just so versatile - a router, NAS, Media Server, VPN, Private and Public Cloud. Just makes my life so simple, saves on energy costs and real estate (space) no need for separate media server, screen, keyboard and mouse, no need for network repeaters.

I am reviewing this router after six weeks of use. It has great range, speed, and power. Perhaps it's not the most attractive router I've owned given its residence on my office desk, but I haven't had one yet that looks like a nice accent piece. I've had no drops in service and all my devices like it quite well. My ISP provides me with 50 Mbs download speed, so you can assess the following with that in mind. Using my Roku 4 in another room maybe 50 feet and at least three walls away, there is almost no wait time before I can watch a Netflix movie. It plays almost as soon as I choose what to watch. I really like the ASUS user setup menu on my computer browser. It seems to be more straight forward than the LinkSys menus I've used over the years. This is the best router I've had to-date and I don't regret it. I have not used the USB ports yet, so I can't comment on them. I expect them to perform as advertised.

I've used a lot of different home routing devices in the past, from most of the major manufacturers. Last time I needed a router, Asus was recommended to me, and we had many years of satisfaction with the N56R. Since moving into a larger home, however, the old router just wasn't up to the task. In looking for a router with external antennas, ac band coverage, and broader range, for me, it came down to the Linksys or to the Asus. I read many luke warm reviews about the Linksys, and it's constant need for rebooting, and indeed that was my experience with an old Linksys router. Because we had been so happy with the other Asus router, we chose to go with this one. The coverage is exceptional, and the ability to aim the antennas to cover the main floor, upstairs, and downstairs of our large home really is amazing. The speed is quite significant as well. I've used several iOS applications to track the speed, and with the old router, we were limited to about 8 Mbps. This device consistently has been clocking between 28 and 30 Mbps. Overall, we couldn't be happier with the way this router is performing, and even with the addition of a network attached storage device, it distributes high quality music and video, and allows wireless backup of all of our devices without any recognizable slowdown. We use it in a hybrid network environment, partly wired and partly wireless. I have no hesitation at all in recommending this quality product.

I have Cable One and have had constant disconnects and serious connection issues over WiFi for a while now. I had an older Netgear Wireless N but always received page faults when it was connected. Cable One provided me with a Arris TG852 (router, wireless, telephony) and the wifi connection was horrible to say the least. Basically I read around online and picked this one up due to its awesome reviews. I am able to get 50 Mbps on most devices and a whopping 10 Mbps on a PS3. In my opinion those are great numbers. The user interface is great for newbies, or people like me that are pretty tech savvy. Just remember to follow the steps I list in here prior to hooking this modem up. It removes all the page faults that are caused by your cable modem firewall and your new Asus Router.
1. Access the modem interface by typing Http://192.168.0.1 into the browser, hit return and the modem interface with the user name and password entry input will appear on the screen.
2. The default user name is “Admin” and the default password is “password” in lower case. Enter “password” and the basic set up page appears.
3. Go to LAN setup and under Nat section select Bridged.
4. Go to the Firewall tab and unselect “enabled” Security will be provided by your own wireless router.
5. Under the wireless tab if the wireless is turned on uncheck enable wireless.
6. Install your own wireless router in accordance with the instructions that came with it.
Follow those steps and you will be very happy with the results.
The image I posted was from Speedtest.net and compared to 1 -2 Mbps if it connected at all.

My initial experience with this router was not good. I purchased online for store pickup. Got home and setup router. It was great. I didn't have any dropped connections on all my WiFi connected devices. Which is why I purchased this router in the first place. But the following day this router had a major malfunction and bricked itself. So I returned it to the store and exchanged it for another with no questions asked by Best Buy. I had read so many good reviews about this model I wanted it to work. I am aware that sometimes there are production issues and there is bound to be a couple of units that might be bad. So I always give products a second chance. With that being said,if the second one I get is bad I will not purchase anything that brand sells again.
My old router was dropping video that was streaming to my tv's. The router was about 5 years old. It was good at the time. Since that time my family has added 3 smart tv's as well as 2 roku units plus 5 cell phones 4 laptops 3 tablets a thermostat and a nvr to the WiFi and router. We noticed that we were dropping connections on a regular basis. My devices were competing for WiFi bandwith. With the addition of an NVR camera system it was very noticeable. So I did my research and came to the conclusion that this model was the best for my household in my price range.
It works great, and does exactly what I was looking for. Easy setup, flawless operation. I can now stream movies on all Tvs without any interruptions, as well as check my NVR cameras wirelessly all at the same time. This would have crashed my other router.
Overall this is a great route .

As stated, great speed and range. Wish I had a gigabit connection from my ISP though. A tad on the expensive side, but it was the only thing that broadcasts at the strength I need. The device management features are great, including an amazing QoS feature.

my first review on BB. This router is well worth the money. My Verizon router had only 20Mbps on wireless ( my connection speed in wired is 75 Mbps) and after replacing with ASUS, I get over 90 Mbps on multiple speed test over wireless and 50Mbps on the top floor.Coverage is also good( not excellent) , I have my router in the basement and I get signal 2 floors up but it is slighty patchy when I use it with my iPhone. Do not see the issue with my laptops. Setup was also easy. Only gripe was that ASUS is supposed to provide tool to discover the IP of the router after it changes the subnet but that link to download the tool was broken. Had to use alternative tool. Overall it is good buy and have been using it for close to 2 months.

Prior to buying this I had your standard cheap Netgear Router plus a Range Extender and it still wasn't enough. Now that I have this not only is my range inside and outside my house more than double, But my internet is faster as this more compatible with my Comcast High Speed internet. It's definitely worth the money IMO.

I decided to give a broadband provider another chance. The first time I had used their provided modem/router and had a terrible experience - the wireless signal kept dropping and was slow. I asked them to recommend a good router. They recommended a TrendNet router. After reading the reviews in several places, I looked for a different router and found this one. The reviews were positive everywhere I looked. When the service was being installed, even the installers were amazed at the strength of the signal. The setup was a breeze. All I had to do was log in to give the network a name, password and select the encryption. It has been less than a month, but I have not had an issue yet. In fact it has been "set it and forget it".

This router was purchased to replace a Meraki N router for which the initial license had expired and would cost over $300 to renew for 3 years and was not upgradable to AC speeds or range. That Meraki worked flawlessly up to the very last minute of the initial 3 years term so I wanted one that was highly rated as a replacement. I purchased this router based primarily on the user reviews and professional awards. It was easy to setup by following the wizard even though I manually configure it to meet very specific needs.
The features that are packaged are what matters for ease of use while providing adequate security and the menus are easy to follow. This router has been working from the day it was plugged in. No issues even after extended power outages.
I am a little more of an advance user than most so I will keep it simple by saying that if it works for me, meeting my stringent demands for reliability and security, it will work for you. You must have realistic expectations of obstacles that can affect range and security. No router will meet every need but for what it was designed to do, it works flawlessly.
Don't blame the router if you do not change the default password. Don't blame the router if you do not plug it into a reputable UPS and it gets damaged by power surges. Don't blame the router if you are a complete novice but don't know that you are and, refused to seek help to install and configure it.
I would recommend this router to anyone.

A bit skeptical after seeing issues from some reviewers/sites, but purchased the Asus RT-AC68P; it has performed as advertised. Increased range/throughput over previous Linksys E3000 and ability to provide separate access to 2.4/5ghz radios allows optimal management of devices. 5ghz delivering 50+mbps to phones and Samsung HD televisions. Painless setup. Recommended.

Best Router I've Ever Had

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
In short, this is, quite honestly, the best, and fastest, router I've ever had. The long (although not overly-long) version:
I've had a number of routers over the years, covering the majority of 802.11 standards, although I will state this is my first ac router. Ignoring that point, considering the fact that only our two laptops have 802.11ac (everything else on the network...currently consisting of 10 other devices...is 802.11n, or older), I have run several bandwidth speed comparisons, and the ASUS RT-AC68P has improved our overall bandwidth by a huge margin...and I haven't even optimized it yet.
As everyone knows (or should know), with DSL, you always get a slower sped than what you're paying for, whereas with cable internet, you always tend to get a faster speed - how much faster typically depends on your modem and/or router. While a small part of the bandwidth is dependent on the communication between the router & connected devices, a far greater part of it is related to the communication between the router & modem. Just to provide an easy-to-understand comparison, I've used speedtest.net for basic download & upload speed comparisons.
We currently subscribe to Comcast's "Performance" internet service, which claims a 50Mbps download bandwidth. With the old router, a Linksys 802.11n model that I will leave unnamed, download tests typically produced results in the 55-65Mbps range. With the new ASUS router, they have consistently been in the 85-90Mbps range, with occasional tests producing download speeds as high as 92Mbps. Again, these results have been achieved WITHOUT optimizing the routers settings. When/If I get around to optimizing the settings, I'm thinking it might be possible to get closer to 100Mbps, although I don't expect to hit triple-digit speeds.
I find it extremely interesting that there are a few routers currently available that are, essentially, the exact same (hardware-wise) as the RT-AC68P, with the only real difference being the installed software...yet, based on several reviews I've read, the ASUS RT-AC68P consistently produced better results. For those who prefer to overwrite the firmware with 3rd-party firmware, you could end up with even better results.
Do I recommend the ASUS RT-AC68P...heck yea!!!

The most impressive this about this router is the range. I have the router setup in my office which is in the basement on the west side of my house and in my master bedroom which is on the east side and 2 floors up I still get 60% signal strength and 60-100Mbps speed. No need for a wi-fi extender with this router. It has simualtaneous dual band which is nice as 2.4Ghz has better range but 5Ghz is twice as fast and can still get decent 5Ghz signal in most of my house. Ethernet works well too as I always get at least 900Mbps transfer rate for downloads. A little of a pain to get setup as it wouldn't get internet connection but started working after a couple of manual resets. Had for over a month and still working great with no resets needed. Would recommend to anyone looking for better wi-fi signal strenth.

I bought this Asus RT-AC68P to replace my Asus RT-N66R in the living room. The RT-N66U surprisingly stopped working after 18 months. The RT-AC68P did not disappoint me: good wireless range with intuitive and flexible admin UI.
The dual-core processor on the RT-AC68P makes navigating the menu A LOT smoother and quicker than the old RT-N66R. My previous RT-N66R would drop the 5GHz N-only connection with my Amped Wireless SG20000G range extender every now and then. However, the RT-AC68U will stay connected using the setup. For whatever reason, the RT-AC68P also runs cooler than the RT-N66R.
I also have the Linksys WRT1900AC in my study room. The Asus RT-AC68P's menu is more intuitive and has more features than the Linksys WRT1900AC's menu. Asus also did a pretty good job in providing more frequent firmware updates than Linksys. I did not do a formal benchmarking but the Asus RT-AC68P also seems to be more responsive in both wired and wireless LAN than the Linksys WRT1900AC. I would not hesitate to buy a second Asus RT-AC68P if I did not have the Linksys WRT1900AC.
All in all, I am happy with the Asus RT-AC68P.
