I was immediately blown away by this device. I initially made the purchase to use it for developing\testing UWP apps. I had previously left the windows mobile paradigm waiting for the next great flag ship and explored android on a galaxy s5. I got my Lumia640 on a $30 sale, and added an $8 cover to it. For the cost of a meal at a chain restaurant for two, I got a really impressive device. It is more responsive than my S5, has the apps that I use regularly, and provides a great develop\test device. The camera is good, not impressive, I didn't expect it to be, but I like those live photos and they are decent.
When my partner dropped their S4 into a body of water, I handed this one over and she too was immediately impressed. The questions began: 'how can this phone have all these features and be less than the insurance deposit to replace my s4?', 'how can this phone be this good', 'why aren't all phones in this price point'.
So she has mine, and I had to grab another one, luckily also @ $30. I've been running Windows 10 mobile on the fast-ring to explore what's to come. The kids also love them, and they're used to android and ios on their own personal tablets.

For those people complaining about the apps, "Don't believe the hype." This phone has all the apps, including banks. If you can't find the app, use the Internet explorer that comes with the phone. It's safe, secure and I have not had any issues with anything. The camera takes pictures just as good as my wife's iPhone 6 and the video is the same. The phone is responsive and I haven't had it freeze on me yet. I bought it on Black Friday and have been using it ever since. The battery life is better than my old Galaxy S4 Android. With heavy use it lasts me 24 hours and with light use it'll last 48 hours; comparable to iPhone 6. If you want to try Windows smartphone, do it. You will not regret it and save a ton of money. This phone will be updated to Windows 10 when the update is available.

So I bought this smartphone during black friday when it was roughly $30. I didn't expect much, but when I first used it, I was blown away. The Windows UI was easy to use and the microsoft store had all the apps that I wanted. Coming from an Iphone user here are the things that this phone beats the iphone in.
-Battery Life: Average on screen time was 9-11 hours
-Better Camera: The Nokia Camera App came with many features that improved it.
-Removable Battery!
-Sd Card Slot!
To sum things up, if you are not an app heavy user who just wants a smartphone for what it is, this will definitely satisfy your needs.

I got Lumia 640 for $30. I don't think you can get a better specced smartphone in this price range.
A camera with 8MP, display with 5 inch screen & 720p resolution is quite uncommon in this price range.
Its quite fast. I didn't find any lag. Its upgradable to latest windows mobile 10. What more can we ask from a budget smartphone.
If you can manage without android, grab this at the earliest.

Unlocked through ATT site and using on TMobile with LTE speed. Comments focused on phone and not about windows.
Likes:
-Acceptable video streaming with LTE.
-HD screen comparable to mid tier phones.
-Erase unnecessary apps and download the essentials with 2g memory to spare.
-Removable battery able to go all day on calls/web.
-Calls are crisp.
Dislikes:
-Occasional stalls when downloading web page.
-Touch response on screen takes patience as it is not as responsive compared to higher end phones.
-Camera quality

Purchased two of these phones; one is in use by my daughter, and the other I'm using (in combination with a 64GB micro SD card) as a bargain basement MP3 player.
Pros: best value I've seen for a smart phone, with a good, responsive UI. Built-in apps are all solid, and Microsoft provides a DLNA app (Lumia PlayTo) that makes it easy to stream music to my Denon receiver. SD card slot makes it easy to add storage.
Cons: No dedicated GMail app, and I have not figured out how to use the built-in Mail app to approximate the GMail app (priority inbox, etc). The app store does not have some of the apps I'm used to, but so far I've been able to find everything I needed.
In short, can't beat the value here.

The Lumia 640 phone is just awesome. It comes with all of the features and apps that I need out of the box. It has a front facing camera for selfie and 8mp rear camera with flash. I added an additional 64Gb microsd card, so I have insane amount of memory. It is so easy to add my own mp3 music and mp4 movies by just plugging in a usb cable and download directly to the phone. I can stored the apps on my microsd card, so there is no limit on the space I can use for the phone. I have so many games and apps. The living tiles gives me quick updates on my calls, messages, and emails. This phone is so much better than any android or iPhone at an incredible price. I am planning on buying for all of my family.

I picked up two of these as cheap replacements for broken Windows phones for $30 each outright on Black Friday sales, with no other obligations or costs, for use on existing AT&T plans. A quick stop at the AT&T store to get full contract SIMs (for no charge) was all that was needed to get them up and running.
Because these replaced Windows phones, we already understood the app ecosystem and it's limits. These are low end phones so far as cameras, processors, and memory are concerned, but they work fine, batteries last all day, and the price was great. And they have an SD card slot so adding a 64GB microSD card (also on sale for $15) provided plenty of storage space.

I've had great luck with the Nokia Lumia low end windows phones. I started with the 520 and it was a great little smart phone at the time but lacked the front facing camera, rear camera flash, and horsepower to really be anything too special. I then upgraded to the Lumia 630 on a black friday sale for a $30 steal and it upped the screen size to something more respectable and easier to see, and ramped up the horsepower a lot. But it still lacked many key features that I was looking for. This iteration of the low end windows phone in the Nokia Lumia 640 has everything I'm looking for at an affordable price. Once again I got it on sale for a ridiculous $30 and it finally has the camera flash, the front facing camera, a (compared to the last two models) huge screen, and tons of horsepower. I love it! It's everything I've been waiting for in the low end phone. But that came at a price. While I dropped the previous models tons of times without a case they never once cracked or even chipped the screen. They all feel cheap but no doubt the last two models took a beating and kept on going. The Lumia 640 however cracked the screen on the very first drop. It might just of been dumb luck, it might of been how it landed, but I know I've dropped the other models in similar fashion and they were fine. This one, not so much. It was still usable as in it would turn on, the touch screen functioned, and you could make calls fine but there is a huge spider crack in the screen now and thats not what you want to see when you look at your new phone. I will be replacing it eventually but I will be getting a durable case to help it last a little longer and I recommend that you do too.

I have been using Windows Phones for quite a while now and may be on my fourth one. I had a Lumia 920 that was great until the 10th time I dropped it and it finally broke. Got a Lumia 925 as a replacement and it was good, but it only had 16GB of storage and was not expandable. The Lumia 640 was on sale for $60 and I did not hesitate to get it. I immediately popped in a 64GB micro sd card and an Evocell case and absolutely love it. The screen looks good, it has plenty of storage now, it feels great in a case (not too big or too heavy) and it feels good in the hand (a little slippery without a case). Went to an AT&T store afterwards to get my new GoPhone set up as a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) phone for a contract and it was easy. This phone is also eligible for the free Windows 10 Mobile upgrade. Highly recommend.

Why five stars? It is all in context, and for the context to work for you, please read.
First I wanted a Windows phone to use on the T-Mobile network, since they do not have one I chose this one. You can unlock the phone to work on T-Mobil, just do a search on You Tube and you can see how to do it. It really couldn't be easier.
Secondly, I gave up an LG G4 to use this phone, because I like it that much. I don't need the very best IPS display possible, (it kills the battery life), or any other features that that phone offered. Quite frankly, I liked my G2 better. The camera on the phone is better than adequate for my needs, which are quick photos, and or selfies when needed.
The part I wanted, needed, and made the switch for was...Cortana. I like that better than Google or Apples offering. (I will admit that I have not used Apple, but another factor was getting bang for the buck)
With Cortana I have a completely hands free driving experience when Texts come across. My Bluetooth connection alert me to the text and sender, asks if I want it read, reads it, asks if I want to respond, takes my message and sends it. All without touching my car radio, or phone. When I drive I like to keep my attention on the road, not my phone screen.

This is an excellent value for a smartphone. I've had mine for four months. It does what I need it to do very well...make calls, text, and occasionally search internet. I'm not a gaming fiend but it seems to do alright with what titles are in the store. The number of apps pale in comparison to iOS or Android but that's not my primary concern. I've had it freeze up 4-5 times over the past couple weeks. Prior to that, no issues. Hopefully, it's not a recurring issue.
I purchased another for a family member. She is happy with it too.

Got this for my wife when her phone died, and she didn't wwant to continue her contract with her carrier. She LOVES this phone, and says its the best she ever had... except she misses her Android apps. Still, accessing everything else you expect from a phone nowadays is flawless - camera, internet, calls, texts, email, good battery life, etc. It's only missing a robust app selection, hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

Windows phone has always been great for newcomers to smartphones and just need the basics. The app ecosystem isn't there yet but as long as you have a smooth and functional mobile browser it's all still good. The phone itself is super smooth, the screen and build quality above a verage for the price, and it won't bog down after extended use like most Android phones. I would not recommend this for a seasoned smartphone user, but for someone just getting their feet wet, its a very good first smartphone.

It's true. Windows Phone is a great mobile operating system. Too bad it doesn't have the application support like the Android and iOS ecosystems. Fast, fluid, and light, the Lumia 640 is a great budget phone. The screen is a bit too bright in the dark, but it is probably better than screens in this phone range.

This is an amazing phone. It runs smoothly. My only real issue with it is the Apps for the WIndows market is kind of limited. Windows makes a great phone, but the lack of apps would make me consider recommending Apple or Android. If you need a really good phone for a low price, I would highly recommend this phone.
