Customers express satisfaction with the easy installation, auto-unlock feature, smaller size, keyless entry, and convenience of the smart lock. However, they have concerns about its battery life, connectivity issues, compatibility with HomeKit and MESH Wi-Fi systems, and its high price.

Keep your same hardware and installs easily

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is our first experience with a smart lock of any kind. This is a great option for those homeowners that want to stay with their existing door hardware. Installation should be fairly easy for most homeowners. I’d think the biggest obstacle would be if your door doesn’t close well since the lock will need to calibrate itself later in the installation process. Otherwise, August has easy to follow online tutorials that go through a step by step series of instructions on how to install the lock. There is a plate in the mounting hardware that one can use if the deadbolt hole is larger and needs a bit more cover which ours did.
Aesthetically, the lock is quite nice looking. It is not much bigger than what the previous deadbolt hardware was and blends nicely with our other hardware of the same finish. This new model is smaller than previous August models and does not require the August Connect since the lock now has built in Wi-Fi. One can easily operate the lock in a manual fashion by just turning the lock left or right to unlock or lock. The lock utilizes two CR13 batteries so it will be interesting to see how long the CR123 batteries last in our lock.
We have used the lock for over a week now and our experience has been quite good. The app has many options for customization for features such as auto-lock and auto-unlock and door ajar timing. A user can choose to use these features and can set the timing related to each of these functions. We are using the auto-lock feature, but chose at this time to not continue using the auto-unlock feature since not all users in our home come in through the same door and one must allow location access to the August app for this to work. It would be nice if the app allowed different settings for auto-unlock based on each user. We have found the auto-lock feature to work well. We had one time that the app could not connect with the lock and had us run through a series of troubleshooting steps such as checking that the batteries were not bad. We simply waited a bit and the problem resolved itself and has not recurred since. It is nice that the lock can be operated anytime with a key should one need to do so.
August is capable of smart home integration with Google, Apple and Amazon and has voice control for ease of use. Lock security is quite good with two-factor authentication to log into one’s account or to create a new one. August uses bank grade security for the user’s data with Bluetooth encryption, AES 128 bit and TLS encryption for the mobile app. There is also a desktop site to disable the app and all virtual keys should your phone be lost or stolen.
The August lock does come with a bit of a price tag, but it also avoids one having to incur additional hardware purchases since it can be used with existing door hardware and requires no additional Wi-Fi accessory to connect. The virtual key features for guests, auto-lock and auto-unlock features and bank secure levels of security make this lock an easy recommendation to buy. It is nice to go for walks or other outdoor activities and not have to carry one’s keys anymore.

Doesn't extend deadbolt all the way

I must admin, I’m an IT guy by career and unlike most seasoned pros, I do enjoy IoT and Smart Devices in my home.
Over the past few months, I’ve looked at Smart Locks and did get this to try out.
The short of it: It’s going back in the box, never to be used again.
The first thing I saw, was that the two pieces of sealing tape (to show it’s never been opened), were cut.
The installation was fine, you need even less skill than installing a new deadbolt. One thing I found strange, is that I expected the product to sit “on top” of the existing deadbolt lever; that’s not the case. You remove the plate and lever and install this into the door, as if you were replacing the deadbolt entirely (keeping the outside/keyhole) as to still be able to use the key, in the event of WiFi/Bluetooth/tech issues.
With the install kit, you also get some (painters) tape to cover the outside portion of the deadbolt, so it doesn’t fall out during the install.
With an older door and a Schlage deadbolt that’s around a 15 years old, this installed into the deadbolt mechanism without issue. I did end up using the extra back-plate, as the lock itself didn’t cover the hole entirely.
After the install was done, it was configuration time.
In today’s WiFi land and with Mesh being more and more common, SSIDs are the same for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. If you DO have that, then you’re in trouble here.
No matter what Access Point I used (Linksys or Ubiquiti), the lock setup failed because they run 2.4 & 5 on the same SSID. I went into my less used Ubiquiti Access Point and disabled 5GHz; setup was able to continue now that only 2.4GHz was present.
Given this issue during setup, I questioned the technology here, immediately.
I mounted the sensor on the wall near the door (you can drill into the door and not have any external/visible sensors), but I didn’t want to do this and completed the calibration.
Even during calibration, I had issues unlocking and locking. I’d press the screen and it’s say the state changed, but nothing happened. Twisting the lock to engage the deadbolt a few times, would allow the App to work but then I noticed something.
The deadbolt doesn’t extend the full length! Who wants a deadbolt that doesn’t go all the way into the frame? Not me! See the attached pictures for what I’m talking about. This is bad.
My regular deadbolt extends 1in into the door frame - or thereabouts, once it passes the brass. With this “Smart Lock” - it only extends 0.5in.
I could pull the deadbolt and push it as if it wasn’t completely connected internally, but when I twisted the lock mechanism and held my hand against it for resistance, the deadbolt only extended half an inch.
I tied it into Google Home, but it wouldn’t work correctly. I got voice prompts back that it was "trying to do something" but it wouldn’t open or close. Google always told me that it was locked or already open, nothing ever happened.
Then, I went back into the App to lock the door and it wouldn’t connect anymore.
I waited another day, but it still wouldn’t connect.
I uninstalled this and put my normal deadbolt back in.

Hi there,
We are sorry to hear that you had trouble with your new smart lock. As for the deadbolt, it should fully extend. Our team took a look at your photos and it appears you may need to switch adapters from yellow to blue. The Google Assistant was also having issues due to the deadbolt not fully functioning - thus, the adapter switch should help with that as well. Hopefully some of these changes will improve your experience with the lock. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected] if you have any more questions or need help troubleshooting.
Thanks,
August Home

The August smart lock is very well designed. The motor is very quiet and the wireless response time when unlocking is very fast. Batteries do run down faster that we would like but not enough to deter the rating. We are very pleased overall.

Good improvements from the first generation lock

I had been using the 1st generation August lock for years. It needed the connect WiFi hub or the doorbell cam for most of the features to work. Decided to upgrade to this version and have seen many improvements. The actual unit s smaller and easier to grasp and turn. The battery cover stays on and doesn’t pop off and disappear under furniture. The independent connection to the home WiFi frees up an outlet (no hub required). Door sense is a nice bonus. Installed the sensor into the door frame and it knows when the door is shut or open. The lock waits until you close the door before attempting to auto lock. Installation was quick. It even came with a disk that covers the old August lock foot print, so no need to repaint the door or have a ring of old paint color around the new lock. The only issue was getting the new lock to talk to the old keypad. Do not loose the serial number for the keypad! It is on the box and the mounting plate, not the actual keypad. This is not a problem with the actual smart lock, so no stars were dinged.
The WiFi lock can be connected to some smart watches, which I never figured out to do with the 1st generation lock. Not seamless, but handy if you can’t get to the phone or don’t have the keypad.
Overall the upgrade was worth the investment. If you want a lock that allows sharing access with friends and family (and has the instant ability to revoke access, no keys getting copies or not returned), will auto unlock when you approach the door, will auto lock when the door is shut and sends notifications when the lock is activated, this is a good lock to meet that need. If you still need to have a key, but want a smart lock this is a good lock.

I've been on the fence regarding smart locks for a while now. I've never understood the need for one until I saw it in action at my friend's house.
He has a different brand smart lock, but it still got me intrigued at the notion of having one.
After weeks of research, I decided to go with the August wi-fi smart lock. I was something that was simple and didn't have a num pad at the front door. In other words, I didn't want everybody in the neighborhood to know that I had installed one.
The installation including the app installation and user account creation took less than 15 minutes to accomplish.
Granted, if you've changed out door knobs or deadbolt locks before, it will come more naturally. Even if you haven't, the app shows you step by step on how to remove your current set up and install the smart lock.
The features are great. I enjoy being able to lock and unlock with the app. I get notified when the doors been left open, and the auto unlock feature allows me to go through my door without having to pull out my smartphone.
It's extremely pricey, but I think it was a great investment. I would definitely recommend it to anybody.

TLDR: It's simple and efficient to use and just works with all my automations and integrations. I have this lock on a dedicated 2.4ghz with the router nearby in a mesh network.
Pros: Installation was simple. Was able to get it installed in 15 minutes and could've done it in 10 if I had a drill. App has features and a setup if you have multiple properties making it easier to manage. Although it's rather on the large side of things it's still looks better than most (except the level smart lock)
Cons: It's a tad on the large side of things , and the battery life does tend to be lacking. I'd definitely recommend buying those cr2 batteries in bulk
I saw some people having issues with connectivity. If you're having issues, I'd suggest getting a router that can run in a mesh network where you can separate the 2.4ghz band. This gave me the best connectivity and the lock hasn't dropped signal since.

Lock was good as it was the only ptoduct that did not need an additional wifi bridge. However setup with the app was difficult, as the app Bluetooth would not easily connect or download the latest firmware for 1st upgrade. Lock wifi is not reliable as it keeps disconnecting. Battery drains very quickly and connecting via an android app is not always easy as it take at least a good 30 to 40 seconds to give you status of Lock or unlocked.

This smart lock has been one of the best additions to my smart home setup! It works seamlessly with both Apple HomeKit and Google Home, giving me peace of mind every time I leave the house. I essentially never had to lock my door manually again—such a game-changer!
With features like auto-lock, auto-unlock, remote control, and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity, it’s incredibly convenient.
The only downside was the lack of clear instructions for uninstalling it. I ended up leaving it behind at my old apartment, but the next resident seemed to appreciate it as much as I did.
While it seemed pricey at first, looking back, it was totally worth the investment. I'm planning to get another one soon!

I replaced a 3rd generation August lock with this new lock a couple weeks ago. Basically outside of the lock being smaller and using Wifi instead of the need for an August connect this lock is similar to the 3rd generation lock. It was easy to upgrade to this new lock as the installation was complete in about 15 or 20 minutes. My old lock was silver and this matte black looks great while being far less bulky than the older lock. Even if you were installing the lock from scratch, the installation instructions found in the app are great! We'll see how long the battery life lasts but other than that I'm happy with every aspect of this purchase. If you buy this lock and follow the installation instructions you will be happy with your purchase.

After looking at numerous reviews it seems people either hate this thing or really like it. I’m at the lower end of the scale I guess, can’t say I really hate it but I sure don’t like it.
So first, support options are a virtual chat bot which is almost worthless or email, with a three day response time. For having just spent almost $250 on a tech product if I have a problem I want to talk to someone. August claims it’s Covid-19 and/or wildfires in California that are creating their support problems and I can appreciate these things likely do have an impact but I’ve got numerous other smart home accessories that I’ve no problem getting someone on the phone.
If all you want to do is operate the lock with the August app via Bluetooth this may be the lock for you but if you want to integrate with HomeKit, read on. If you want this lock for HomeKit you SHOULD read my section under cons.
I do want to say here that my lock got returned the next day. I’ll describe below pros and cons but after 30-45 minutes after setup, the lock basically quit working. First thing that happened was in HomeKit it became unresponsive. I took the batteries out, put them back in to basically “reboot” the lock, no help. I did a factory reset using the August app, went through the whole setup again and still didn’t work. Eventually the lock wouldn’t connect to even the August app via Bluetooth from two feet away so I couldn’t do anything. Checked the batteries, they were fine. So I uninstalled the lock from the door, uninstalled the doorsense, deleted my August account, deleted the lock from HomeKit, repackaged the lock and my wife returned it today. Bought it locally, not from Amazon. Even though it may simply have been a defective lock I will NOT be buying another one of these for reasons below in cons.
Pros;
Probably the best thing about it is it REALLY is easy to install. Literally a screwdriver and 10 minutes (if you’re really slow) and it’s installed. Now it comes with this thing called “doorsense” which is supposed to tell the app whether the door is open or closed (didn’t get to test this) and it’s easy to install as well but in my opinion, a bit clunky.
The lock is smaller than the previous August lock which is a good thing but it’s still a big knob on the inside. Batteries are super easy to replace.
The lock is pretty easy to setup with the app although in my opinion, there are a lot of steps. It was an excellent idea of August to include the QR code’s for setting up in the app and with HomeKit, inside the lid of the knob which pops off with a push. You do have to create an account with August but that’s not at all unusual.
It works with a multitude of dead bolt locks and compatibility is listed on the August website.
Cons;
I guess the reality is that if the lock simply hadn’t failed I don’t really have any/many cons and “might” have kept it if not for the integration with HomeKit which is the sole reason I bought this smart lock.
The irony of this is CNET has listed this product as the best HomeKit compatible smart lock in 2020. Man, did someone fail at testing for this.
Oh, as listed in the Pros above, the lock is easy to install in the August app and after that setup it’s was easy enough to add to my home Wi-Fi network and then HomeKit, just a lot of steps in all of these operations.
Once the lock is integrated into HomeKit it shows up as an available accessory which you can then add to a specific room with or without scenes, you can add it to automations you’ve setup, etc, etc. Everything you would expect with a HomeKit accessory.
Here’s the rub. My wife who is an invitee in our HomeKit network can’t manage the network but can use every accessory and automation just like me. The August smart lock showed up in the Home app on her iPhone after I set it up but on her phone, instead of being able to use the lock, the icon in HomeKit said setup was required. When you pressed and held the icon to get to the next screen it said to use the manufacturers app to setup.
EVERY other HomeKit accessory I have has not done this. I’ve got ceiling fans, lights, blinds, smart plugs and switches, another smart lock (which I’ll mention shortly) and when I’ve added them to our HomeKit network they’ve ALL showed up in her phone as immediately available to use.
So I go back into the August app and find the section to invite guest. The app is requiring me to create ANOTHER account for her as a guest just so I can add to HomeKit and get the accessory that’s already setup in HomeKit to simply work for her. Rather than create another account I tried using my credentials from my account I had already created but then I got a message on my phone that “someone” was trying to use my phone number which was already part of an account and wouldn’t go any further.
This is the most obnoxious and convoluted HomeKit setup I’ve ever seen, if there’s more than one person using the HomeKit network. I would say maybe it’s something to do with the ability to invite other guest to be able to use their Bluetooth phone to lock/unlock the lock but my Level lock which has that same capability does not put you through this crap.
I’ll make this brief as nothing else has been but if you want an elegant smart lock that integrates seamlessly with HomeKit, look at the Level lock @ level.co. This thing is awesome and the ONLY reason I didn’t buy a second of these instead of the August lock was because of location. The caveat with the Level lock is it’s Bluetooth only and has to be within range of a HomeKit hub to work, and it wouldn’t have where I wanted to install.
Good luck to anyone who buys the August WiFi Smart lock. It’s not the lock for me.

Hello,
We’re very sorry to hear about your experience with the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock. We strive to provide the best support possible and are currently managing through having many of our staff members impacted by COVID-19 as well as the recent wildfires in CA and hurricanes in the gulf (we have contact centers in the SF Bay Area and Mexico). The health and safety of our team is always a priority, and as with everyone else these days, we’re managing through a whole new world. We hear you and are doing our best to make changes to best serve our customers and keep our team members healthy and safe. Currently, In order to use our locks via HomeKit all users must be registered Owners in the August app. After a user has been invited with Owner level access the user must connect to the lock via Bluetooth after the HomeKit invitation has been accepted. If the invited HomeKit user sees a Setup Required error then the user should ensure that they have made a Bluetooth connect as a lock Owner in the August app. August was the first lock integration that was build with HomeKit when we released our HomeKit enabled second generation lock and security is our top priority. For security purposes, (security is at the core of what we do at August) this was the decision about how to move forward with the HomeKit integration. We hear your frustrations and will be sure to share this with our team. For security purposes we do have a 2-Factory Authentication that should have provided you with a verification code when signing into another device with your existing account. However, you received the error message that someone was trying to use your phone number because you were attempting to create a new separate account with credentials that are already tied to your existing August account. While we do advice against it, we do have users who share a single August account by selecting Sign In when using the same credentials rather than attempting to create a new account.
Let us know if you have questions.
Thanks,
August Home

Very easy to install. Only need a screw driver to undo 2 screws and this smart lock sides onto the inside half of your existing door knob. You can still access the door by using your standard existing key. Setup was simple. Download the app and select your 4th Gen smart lock. You will be guided step by step through the setup process. Surprisingly I think the manufacture did an extensive job to make sure this process goes smooth and with little fuss. Everything I did worked the first time and never gave me any issues. (Like pairing with the WiFi or the app being able to find the smart lock via Bluetooth) everything went well in the installation. Iv been using the lock for a full day and a half now on my front door that usually has slot of traffic each day going in and out. So far I'm really pleased with this smart lock! I would highly recommend it!

This thing is amazing! First off it was super easy to install. They offer instructions, and if those are hard to follow, on the app they also provide you with step by step video setup. It connects super easy after that with alexa and/or home kit. Runs off battery but also still works like a normal lock. It will replace only the inside portion of your door lock. so if you live in an apartment, like i do, you dont have to replace the whole lock. this still allows landlords to get in if needed. its also not as bulky as i thought. it is bigger that the standard lock but its not huge.

This wireless lock has to be one of the best on the market. Great signal and app just plain works. The down side is that there’s no website to control your locks with. Only accessible via the app. Batteries that come with it only last a couple months. But most 123 batteries will last all year after that. Very easy to install since it uses your original lock mechanism.

I owned the previous gen August lock and wanted to upgrade. I love the size and the fact it doesn't need a separate wifi bridge, but boy does this thing HATE Apple's HomeKit. HomeKit will always read if it's locked or unlocked but it won't actually lock or unlock it, and definitely won't using Siri. My HomePod hub is about 15 feet away and every time I've tried to unlock it via the Home app or Siri, it says it's not connected. I've tried resetting it and reconnecting it a dozen times and August customer support is terrible.
If you aren't using HomeKit, then the lock is great. It reads my phone when I get home to auto unlock and auto locks without fail. Just don't expect anything from HomeKit.

The August lock is a very worthwhile purchase. I researched smart locks for almost 6 months before moving forward with a purchase. The reason why I choose August is the proximity unlock, at the time of this review there’s is the only lock with this feature.
I don’t like to feel obstructed from my home. I also don’t enjoy carrying keys. so, the aforementioned feature allows me access to my home without having to do a thing! I simply arrive within the defined home proximity as the door auto-unlocks. And if the door is not engaged (opened) within a certain timeframe, the door re-locks.
Additionally, and this is a feature shared by most smart locks, I love that I can issue permanent, temporary, or recurring smart keys to our guests.
admittedly, it would be nice if our guests did not have to download the August app in order to access the digital key. Well not too much of an issue for those we intend to give permanent or recurring access to, this could be bothersome for guests who only require one time access.
The manual operation of the lock it’s very simple, turn left to lock turn right to open. The amount of live information you can access from the app is pretty impressive. The app informs you whether your doors locked, opened, unlocked, and the length of time that your door has remained open. If the lock is unlocked using the app or auto unlock, the app tracks who engaged the door.
The insulation was quite simple, we used the included parts and the lock is functional in less than 30 minutes. For our door, we did need to drill the hole in our door a little bit larger for smooth operation of the lock. (If you need to lean on, kick, or otherwise manually push your door in order to get it to close/lock pre-installation, you will need to correct this for proper operation of the August lock)
The one thing that I would like for August to offer in the future, is additional finishes on the lock. The silver looks a bit… cheap compared to my surrounding finishes. I would suggest a stainless steel, brushed nickel, and polished steel option.
