    Best Smart Lock

I had been watching for a great deal on this device for a while and didn’t want to compromise picking up the 3rd gen that required the hub. Not sure if it is my wifi signal or what, but the unit disconnects from the wifi daily. It’s still a solid performer and hasn’t left me waiting to unlock. The auto lock and unlocalized features are great and you can customize them to your liking. Was a breeze to set up and this generation is smaller than the previous. Thinking about picking a second one for another door.

    troublesome functionality; poor support

I purchased 2 of these, along with 2 keypads, based on their generally stellar reviews. Pros: Easy installation is; control w/ August app generally works. DoorSense is useful, if the August app works and the lock stays connected to Bluetooth/Wifi, telling me if my door’s left open. Cons: loses Wifi and Blutooth connectivity quite frequently and at random (despite good router and modem). - a primary reason I purchased the locks was their supposed HomeKit integration, which seems to work for some, but not for me, and, according to several web searches, not for others, despite using the most recent lock, app and firmware. The locks will appear in Home app, and Home tells me when the lock is locked or unlocked, but it won’t let me lock or unlock the locks or, thus, set automations within Home. Tech support is poor, esp. especially for a company owned by Yale. E-mail is the only support available (no phone), and to each of my responses, though I usually receive a fairly prompt response, it’s usually from a different person, thus continuity is poor. I submitted bug logs from within the August app, and when the tech support agents could go no further, I was told my debug was in a que of others, but not when, roughly (or if at all for certain),I’d hear back. Requesting returns/refunds past 30 days — even if the locks have never worked — doesn’t appear possible. So don’t purchase for a home project >30 days before you plan to install.

Great but can have a problematic setup experience

Awesome lock when you finally get through the setup. However, there are many issues you can encounter during setup that will hamper your efforts and maybe even result in you getting a refund. In my particular experience, I wanted to use it with Apple HomeKit. It is important to understand that Apple HomeKit relies on a good Bluetooth connection with an Apple HomeKit Hub. If your hub is too far away, it’s not going to be stable experience . However if you only intend to use the August App, it relies on your wifi connection (and could very well save you if your HomeKit fails you). But never ever leave home without your keys because that’s when the lock will fail you. It is also important to understand that if you have a fancy new modem or modem/router combination that has both wifi bands on a single SSID (meaning it decides which device uses 2.4 or 5.4), you might have some trouble. The lock only works on 2.4, and your router may not be able to figure that out. Therefore I highly recommend splitting 2.4 and 5.4 into separate SSIDs and using the 2.4 for your setup. If your modem or modem / router combination can’t do that, it may be time to replace it. Additionally, if your lock needs a firmware update (and it probably will), I highly recommend a factory reseting right after. There are situations in which the lock doesn’t work right after a firmware update unless you factory reset it. Trust me….. just factory reset it after the firmware update and you’ll save some headaches. I would also like to point out that resetting you Apple account password during Apple HomeKit setup is a bad idea. It can cause some additional problems. Work out your password issues before you setup this lock. I would also like to point out that if this lock goes through batteries like candy, you probably didn’t install it properly. During installation, it’s super important that the mount plate be perfectly centered with the shaft of the deadbolt. If the deadbolt doesn’t turn smooth and easy, recenter it and try again. You’ll be glad you spent 20 minutes on this step when you don’t have to cash out for batteries every time you hit the grocery store.

Just what I wanted! I needed a smart lock that was small, discreet, easy to install and this was it. I love how it works with your existing hardware, so no need to have it re-keyed. Installation took about 10 minutes, works well with my iPhone 12 pro and I love it. You can key the additional keypad and give out codes to people or lock and unlock the lock from your phone. Love it!

This lock was purchased for a private dwelling, setup was easyish. It took about 30 minutes to install. My old keys still work and works mostly as expected. I did run into a problem with the auto lock feature running through my homekit setup. I do believe this is an issue caused by slightly larger weatherstripping causing the lock to jam. However, I won't know for sure until I get that changed out. That being said, I am happy with my purchase, it has features that, once other issues are fixed, should be very convenient. I consider myself an intermediate level handyman, I do believe almost anyone could install this on their own. Overall great purchase.

Easy to use and install smart lock. Works well with its native app. HomeKit implementation could be better as it tends to disconnect frequently.

This August Door Lock 4th Generation works great!

This August door lock works perfectly! There are many features and settings available so you can customize it to how and when you want the lock to open and close. I set mine to open when I get home so I’m not fumbling for keys at two in the morning! It uses your existing door lock so your key still works! When leaving the house I yell ‘Alexa, lock the front door’ and then I close the door before it locks without me having to pull my keys or phone out of my pocket. I gave this four stars because I have to replace the batteries once a month so it does get expensive when you pay $10 for a set of batteries!

Great build quality and setup was easy, I’m knocking a star off because while this uses wifi to communicate it switches to Bluetooth more than I would want it to. This means it often doesn’t respond, I ended up connecting it google home and I control it through the home app and through voice using my nest wifi assistant speakers. This forces it to use wifi always. The unlock from x distance has been helpful when I’m out and arriving home, the door is unlocked and ready for me.

Very easy to install, it took only 10 minutes. The best thing about this is that I can lock or unlock using my Apple watch. You can set it to auto lock after a set time in case you have forgotten to lock your door. The only issue is that it just auto locks after the timer elapses, without sensing whether the door is open or closed. This lock comes with a door open/close sensor, so I am not sure why it cannot sense if the door is closed before auto lock takes place.

All the features are fine. Sometimes the connection to my phone disconnects so my door doesn't open when I get home. The issue I have is that I am literally replacing the battery every 30 days, with a rechargeable I'm replacing every three weeks. That is the only pitfall, but it is enough to have me look at other options.

Installation is a breeze. Lock works as expected. door sense is a great feature that alerts you in case the door was left ajar or open for an extended period of time. Home and Away modes are extremely handy features that will lock/unlock automatically. The battery life is quite unpredictable but that could be because of the batteries quality itself. I’d highly recommend this smart lock

I absolutely LOVE how this automatically unlocks as soon as I get close to the door, and locks itself when I leave. It’s a perfect set-it-and-forget-it device. It senses my phone in range and just unlocks. Don’t have to touch my phone, or say a word. It just does it. It doesn’t get more automated. You can also issue temporary “keys” to the phones of guests, allowing them access for the length of time you determine. It’s very secure, and was way too easy to install. I think the only tool it took was a screwdriver! From the outside you don’t even know there’s a smart-lock attached to the door. I’m completely on the home-automation bandwagon, and this is probably my favorite thing so far.

I am living in the three floors house and I always have to come down from the third floor to the first floor if my friends come over to my home. This is an easy to install smartwatch that can install it in less than 5 minutes. It does not require any expertise for the installation. Only the sensor requires drilling if the door and molding are flush. I have noticed a few issues with the Apple Home control and apple watch shortcuts that do not work. I have set August's smart home shortcut in the watch screen which is easy to access. However, most of the time does not work. It has an auto-unlock feature that can open the lock when we go out of the range of the Bluetooth and come back home. However, it also has some issues. I have also noticed that lock batteries discharge quickly within 3 months. It should have a rechargeable thing that we can charge on the night or stand above the watch to charge via a power bank that can reduce maintenance costs. Overall, it is easy to install and the August application has a door lock history and access feature for temp or permanent. However, there is always some issue with the Apple Home control or smartwatch shortcuts and Bluetooth auto-unlock as well. They should also improve the batteries issue.

Absolutely worth every penny. I bought this lock to install in my new house. I wasn't able to live permanently until 6 weeks after closing. This, combined with a ring security system have made me confident all is well in my home. I was able to use the remote lock/unlock feature to allow carpet installers into the house while I was out of state, thus enabling me to get the job done prior to my move. Forget about giving a friend or neighbor a key to check in on your house and pets, just invite them to the app and control when they can unlock your door and when they can't. Amazing product. Exactly what I wanted. Easy to install and the auto lock feature is brilliant.

Setup was a disaster and required getting an iphone to set up for the first time because even going with 3 different Android devices from a moto Z2, Samsung Note 20 and a moto g they count all connect but not complete the process. Now after having these installed for about a year they chew through batteries constantly losing connection even though I have 4 mesh routers in my relatively modest 2 story home. I get perfect wifi coverage from the street to the back of my property about 140' away from the back of my home but the lock in my front door constantly drops wifi. I have to believe it's the unit as the one on a different door has been dependable, maybe only needed new batteries 2 times in the last year. The one on my front door constantly gives wifi errors and needs new batteries almost every 20 days. I guess I need to bite the bullet and swap it for a new unit because just writing this made me think it's got to be the unit in my front door since the unit on the other door seems to work just fine. Not looking forward to adding the lock back into the august app because I don't know if the Android issues were ever really fixed. I will say their tech support was friendly, empathetic, and human so that's why I went with 3 stars instead of 2 or 1.

I wanted to love this lock as I already had the previous August Smart Lock Pro. I liked the smaller profile and slender fit, integration was good - EXCEPT for HomeKit. I could not get HomeKit to work. Contacted the manufacturer for troubleshooting, the manufacturer was also stumped and could not help me. I was told that the problem could not be rectified, therefore I had no choice but to return to this item back to the retailer for refund.

Surprisingly not too difficult to install , had to reinstall the first time from my phone due to connection errors . But once I adjusted the gap in the door to allow the deadbolt to move freely it’s been great these last few weeks . Able to allow guest access as unlock/lock away from home .

Love my new August lock. Couldn’t have been easier to install and connect. Only drawback and reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is no way to know how the batteries are doing until they are going dead. The app should have a way to give you a heads up but it does tell you when they are going dead so there’s that. If you want a smart lock get this one, super easy and works great

So... My lock died. The batteries died, and when I replaced them and when through the recalibration process it gave up the ghost. I called customer service and that was a 7/10 experience, the rep was helpful and friendly, but it took a long time to connect and get to solution. I am getting a new unit covered under warranty, so an extended warranty might be worth considering?? Overall user experience has been mixed. When it works it is great no longer messing with keys just walk up to the door and it is open. But sometimes (always when my hands are full) it takes some time to detect me and unlock so I have to wave my butt at the door hoping it will connect and open, needless to say my neighbors think I'm some kind of weirdo... I would recommend this for someone who is willing to be patient, it does work but it is not 100% on point all the time. The notifications are great, the auto-lock is handy but make sure you set your timer to give you some time in case you walk out to take out the trash and don't get locked out, (ask me how I know).
