Keep All Computers Running Smooth - AVG TuneUp

Since I first started using the computer on a daily basis, I have had a maintenance program to help clean up all of the temporary files, broken links and registries that have been created from the numerous updates and software programs added to and taken off my computers. AVG has been a trusted name in Internet Security and Virus Protection and I have never had any issues with their software, so I thought I would deviate from the standard maintenance “tune-up” program that I have been using for several years and give AVG TuneUp Multi-Device (5 devices) a try with a one year subscription.
I first installed the AVG TuneUp software on the slowest, worst PC laptop that I still use. This laptop was shipped with Windows 7 and upgraded several times to the present-day Windows OS. I knew it had many broken links, hidden temporary files, security holes, etc. The results were amazing! What was the computer that was next in line for “Computer Recycle Day”, now has an extended life and runs great! AVG TuneUp boosted the laptop’s performance making it, once again, an enjoyable computer to use.
AVG TuneUp is basically a software cleanup tool. It scans your compute drives and finds problems, apps not used, programs in need of being updated, etc. It cleans the disk space by removing temporary and hidden files that simply slow down and jamb up the computer’s performance. It cleans the browsers, frees up space; and in doing so, helps the browser from crashing.
AVG TuneUp can be set to perform automatic maintenance, automatic software updates on itself and all the programs on your computer. A special feature offered is the Sleep Mode which can be used periodically to put programs and background processes to sleep automatically when they are not in use. This frees up all the disc’s memory and space, calculation resources, etc. that are normally bogging down the performance of the laptop because of the many background processes that some of them run. This is an easy reversible feature which makes its use an easy decision.
AVG TuneUp also has a 1-Click Maintenance where your PC can be tuned up with one single click. 1-Click Maintenance will defragment your hard drive and registry, fix broken files and remove broken shortcuts, etc.
AVG Cleaner Pro for Android is also included in the software. This cleans up processes and helps improve your computer’s battery life. It cleans the junk and bad or duplicate photos and in doing so, creates more space. While that portion of the software can be dedicated to Android devices, there is also an AVG TuneUp for Mac which keeps your Mac clean of clutter and makes it easy to identify and to delete blurry photos.
I highly recommend AVG TuneUp maintenance program. It is very easy to install and extremely easy to us. If you are struggling with a sluggish computer, then this is certainly worth its cost and more.

Works best on old PCs with mechanical hard drives

AVG TuneUp is one of many software packages out there that promise to breath new life into older PCs by getting rid of the junk that slows them down.
That would be a raft of programs that run in background, but you may not even know are there, tons of old unused files on your hard drive and an even larger of number of small graphics from web sites you visit in your day to day Web browsing.
If you have an older PC that sill uses a mechanical hard drive (vs the newer and much faster solid state drives, or SSDs) it may be well worth the investment. This collection of junk truly does bog everything down. So do errors in the drive itself. AVG Tune fixes them all in pretty sort order without a lot of drama.
It will also rid your registry -- which gets more bloated with every passing day -- of similar bits of old unused stuff, all of which will make your PC boot faster, launch programs more quickly and generally give you more speed in the course of daily activity. Plus it removes pesky tracking cookies.
The differences can be dramatic in very old PCs where no routine maintenance has ever been done to fix any of these problems. Or barely noticeable at all on modern PCs with very fast SSDs.
Setup is fairly simple and automatic. AVG TuneUp does a quick scan once it is loaded and tells you exactly how many problems it has found. These are broken down into four categories called Maintenance, Speed up. Free up space and Fix problems. In each are you can pick and choose what you want the program to do, in terms of fixing issues. Which is good since you may not, for example, want to turn off background programs (in Speed Up section) that are slowing down your PC. Cause you use em all the time and there probably want them running in background.
In the old days, programs that cleaned old registry items could be dangerous since they might erase something important, making a program, or the PC, unusable. AVG seems to have solved this problem. It found more than 500 problems in my registry and fixed them all with no ill effects.
One other bonus. AVG TuneUp will take a look at your installed programs and advise you when updates are available -- at least among a list of commonly used ones . Better yet, it will install those updates for you.
All this can be done regularly by the user or, if you are lazy, you can set the program to do automatic maintenance.
One license is good for one year on 5 PCs,phones and tablets in your household (PC, MAC, Android) . AVG Tuneup worked fine on my two Intel PCs but seemed to have issues with an AMD Ryzen based laptop. Those are not widely used though so this should not be a concern for most users.
Overall, AVG Cleanup is a inexpensive and easy way to rid your devices of unwanted junk and maybe even make then run a faster and/or more smoothly. But it's most useful on older PCs with regular old HDDs.

Tuneup Utilities has actually been around since 2003 and has always been one of the premier pc fix all solutions. AVG purchased the brand in 2011. The utility program has actually gotten more user friendly over the years, by making the software more automated. Once the software is run, you can set it to schedule regular maintenance procedures on it's own. Leaving one less thing for you to remind yourself to do. They has simplified the user interface, leaving the same features we have been used to, but with less of the "advanced user" options in the foreground. You can still bring up all the available functions in a list, as well as use the built in registry editor or file shredder.the main interface focuses on four categories : Maintenance , Speed Up , Free Up Space , and Fix Problems. From here, you can see if any of these areas need your attention, and should be fixed. The program directs you to all the right choices, but still lets you decide what needs to be done, or ignored ( in manual mode). In the automatic mode, it will choose the best options for pc, based on what features you select for this service.I have been using Tuneup Utilities for many years, and it has always helped clear up issues with my pc's as well as my friend's. When Windows and other programs run, they leave pieces of data in many different locations, it's kind of like dropping bread crumbs to find your way back. The only problem, is that when the programs are done with these bread crumbs, they leave them there, instead of deleting them for themselves. Hence we have Tuneup Utilities to clean up the messes all these other programs leave behind. The registry is typically a mine field with left over and useless data, that has been abandoned by other apps. The big problem here, is that your computer has to read all the data in the registry as it starts, whether that data is relevant or not. This excess data can really slow down your computer, is it wastes it's resources reading the junk left behind, and even worse is when some of this junk data, is corrupt, or points to other corrupt files, that can cause your system to freeze or crash.Tuneup Utilities is smart enough to search for all these junk files, and remove this wasted space from your pc, allowing for smoother operations, and faster startup times. The program will also search for other types of junk, like old downloaded files, programs, browser data, cache files, and other user data that you might not need anymore, and gives you the option to delete these, freeing up more disk space. The app can also fix some other common pc issues that can cause crashes or freezing. One of the other cool features is that, it can put other programs to "sleep", stopping unnecessary items running in the background, wasting system resources. This years version also has a built in disk checker, that can quickly scan for errors on your hard drive.
Overall this program has most everything you will need to keep your pc running as efficient as possible. It has always been a reliable piece of software, and has fixed a lot of boot issues for me in the past.
The phone app, is packed full of similar features, and includes a battery optimizer to extend your phone's life, a photo optimizer ( to help compress pictures to save space), and an explorer to help review audio, video, pictures, apps, and downloaded files. So far on my first clean, I saved 3.3GBs.

The AVG Tuneup is the Swiss Army knife of software. It cleans your Android- based phone, PC and Mac of unnecessary files, apps, leftover installation files, etc... Honestly, this program has so many facets, it would take a novella to explain everything it does.
My laptop has a plethora of resource consuming files on it. All the ‘stuff’ I have installed (and uninstalled) on my PC has caused some serious performance issues, including; slow boot times, slow program loads and lockups. The first task I had AVG TuneUp perform was to locate and eliminate registry issues, delete zombie files and defragment my hard drive. This program gives you a lot of options that allow you to fine tune the tasks you want completed.
Long story short, my laptop boots a little faster now since I eliminated several files and links that it had to examine during the boot process.
Then, I ran the app on my Galaxy 10+. TuneUp cleaned my phone of hundred of megs of unnecessary files and duplicate photos. It saves battery life by putting apps to sleep when they aren’t in use.
AVG TuneUp is a great program that keeps your device running at optimal performance. It performs so many tasks, that I can’t begin to fully explain them all. I gave it only four stars because I absolutely HATE subscription based software, as it’s nothing more than a money grab. Once upon a time, you purchased software and used it until a new version came out, then, at your option, you purchased the latest version. Nowadays, you have to pay for it again whether it’s been given a substantial update or not.
As good as this software is, I won’t be renewing it when my year is up.

I am not the most accomplished desktop or laptop user and I had used AVG TuneUp several years with some unfortunate experiences.
This time around however I am very much impressed with this release. The installation could not have been easier on my first desktop (Lenovo).
Subsequently TuneUp launched and began its first tune-up. Unsure of what to expect I let it proceed as it is intended to do. It identified multiple problem areas some of which I had deduced but was unsure how to fix and others unknown to me. At AVG's prompt I let it go forward with most of the proposed fixes, especially those meant to clean up the windows registry and correct possible future problem areas. The fixes were flawless and after rebooting I noticed first of all that my start up time as nearly back to the desktop's out of the box new speed. A wonderful first reward. One of the features I found most interesting and helpful is AVG's "Speed up" option which puts to sleep most background routines and apps, awakens them when called upon by the user, and returns them to "sleep" mode when you no longer need them. All in all I was exceptionally please.
I installed AVG TuneUp on a second desktop (Dell) and an MS Surface Pro without any difficulty and again was impressed with the overall performance. If I had a negative (just for balance you understand) installation after the first computer required multiple logins to my account. This may relate to my advanced age and/or something else but I won't fault AVG for; just be aware it might happen to others.
Finally, AVG TuneUp has been running on all three devices for about a week now and I have had no issues or concerns. It goes through its routine every time I start up and generates an all-clear and notice of what fixes it performed. I recommend it without reservation and users (especially newer or less experienced) may feel confident they will not get blind-sided by the unexpected.

The AVG Tuneup was a breeze to install and to run. It did wonders for my photos saving me gigs of mass storage space, and identifying photos that should have been trashed years ago. I knew I had some duplicate files, but never realized that I had many duplicate files. Again, the Tuneup software freed up hard drive space previously wasted. The Tuneup is fast and efficient, and I highly recommend it for all, but particularly computer owners tight on hard drive space.

I reviewed the AVG Internet Security software about a month ago, and was pretty hard on AVG for using their Internet Security software to promote the purchase of the TuneUp package. Well, I now have tried the TuneUp package and although it is a pretty reasonable price for a 5-device license, it still leaves a little to be desired. More on that shortly.
The TuneUp package basically makes it pretty easy to clean up your computer (or android) without having to fish around for different functions that are already built in to the operating systems. In other words, just about everything that TuneUp does can be done with what you already have, but TuneUp puts it all together in one place and handles the tasks more efficiently. A word of advice, if you have a brand new computer, you won’t get much benefit – as TuneUp is made to clean up the bits and pieces that reside on an older machine after longer periods of use. Items such as abandoned links, downloaded installation files, browser caches, and duplicate file clutter are identified and can be deleted. Personally, I advise against the TuneUp (or any other) “registry cleaner” as messing with the registry willy nilly can boink your system pretty quickly – and the registry entries that are no longer needed don’t take up much room or slow down your computer as some would have you believe. In other words, I totally ignore the recommendations to “clean” the umpy bazillion registry items that are flagged as “not needed” in favor of the peace of mind that comes with leaving the registry alone under any and all circumstances.
Anyway, about half of the functions of TuneUp are either not really needed (such as disk maintenance/scanning on a solid state drive) or cleaning the registry. Clicking a few buttons on TuneUp to scan for broken links (they really don’t slow down the system) helps a little, and deleting garbage and ancient installation files helps a little, and CAREFULLY deleting duplicate files helps a little. All in all, if you have a decent sized hard drive and don’t load your system up with a bunch of crappy shareware that you use once and then forget, TuneUp does a little for you, but doesn’t make a huge difference.
The best function I could find in the package was analysis of programs that were running in the background and using up memory. I was surprised at how many little things were percolating in my system, but it is rather tedious to go through and decide which of them can be “put to sleep” by TuneUp and which of them were needed. Again, if you have a system with 8 gig of ram, there is not a great deal to be gained by putting background services to sleep as they mostly sit and bubble without taking up much memory.
AVG got me soured with their Internet Security program that kept insisting that I needed to get their TuneUp program- and after trying out the TuneUp I still don’t have a happy attitude towards the whole AVG marketing program. I guess I am a good example of how hard it is to get a customer on your side once you have ticked them off or left them feeling like their expectations have been unfulfilled. As far as TuneUp goes, it is something nice to run to see where your system is at, and to clean things up a little bit to get a little faster (a little faster) boot time and free up some hard drive space or memory if you have pushed your system to the edge of storage capacity or need to free up some RAM. Personally, I would rather spend the money to add another hard drive or put in another stick of RAM. Maybe on a laptop with limited expansion capability – I could see it being worth the time to run TuneUp.
On a final note, having run the TuneUp and picking through the options to clean up my system a little bit, I have to mention that the software is only good for one year. Sorry I’m old school and prefer the “buy it and it’s yours forever” model and don’t look forward to the flurry of emails and popups that will come next year to remind me again and again and again that my subscription is fixing to run out and I am in danger of my computer exploding if I don’t ante up for another year’s subscription with “special offers” and such and such.
Sorry for the negative attitude. AVG is well known and makes good products as far as that goes, I just don’t really need the help when you get down to it, and don’t care for being subjected to their marketing strategy. My computers run just fine, and when they start bogging down it works much better just to re-install the operating system and have a fresh start. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, and if it does break – then fix it right.
Peace

It’s super simple to set this program up. Just make an account online and register your product. That way you don’t have to deal with pesky Key Codes that get lost in a couple months. I really like that it fixes registry items and scans for broken shortcuts. These are all small things but look at it as having a little doctor inside your computer ready for small scrapes and bruises. I especially like that it frees up your space by deleting your cache folder in various web browsers. You’d be surprised how much space gets used up without you knowing it. My favorite feature is that it sleeps programs in the background! You don’t have to change up any start up programs. It’s all done conveniently from within the program. AVG has been around for a while, they’re a good company and from the looks of the software they take pride in their work and the simplicity showcases that they care about the everyday users needs.

Install & registration was a little bit confusing trying to go the route of creating an AVG account and putting in code for subscription and then trying to find the link to download. It's easier to just download the trial version and then once installed navigate to My AVG/My Subscription option and select "Enter a valid activation code"
Once installed though, the program is simple to use, fast and works great. On the first pass it was able to free 8.5 GB of disk space. And my computer is only about a month old. It helps you identify easily what programs run in the background when your computer starts and then choose to put them to "sleep". I think that's just a fancy way to say they wont automatically start when you turn on the computer.
It also scans the Windows registry and cleans up broken references, scans hard drives for errors, and clears browser data.
Granted, you can perform all of those actions without TuneUp but it's really handy to have them all located together in one spot.

I currently use AVG Internet Security which included AVG TuneUp, so I wasn't able to install this without uninstalling and not using the internet security suite, so I installed this on another laptop that I use.
Installation and setup was pretty cut and dry and once installed, you can setup your options/settings for use. I pretty much let this run in automatic mode and it does a good job of maintenance for my windows laptop. I haven't installed it on my Samsung laptop yet, but I appreciate the fact that it can be installed on mobile devices.
All in all, this is pretty good software that helps rid my device of cookies, broken registry items, etc, etc. I definitely recommend this.

AVG Tune-up seemed to be pretty standard compared to other Tune-up Software in the market. It was easy to install and really easy to navigate. It did a nice job tuning up my PC as well. The one thing I didn't like was the constant advertisement to sign up for other software with AVG. I wish there were a button to opt-out of the advertisement. Unfortunately, I haven't owned any Tune-up software that doesn't advertise the same way. This review is based strictly off of performance, ease of use, and how it stands up comparably to other competition out there. I have always been satisfied with AVG products and would "recommend" to other buyers searching for new tune-up software.

I have used software for years to keep my computer clean, the unfortunate thing is that the free versions are not very complete, if you want more features then you have to pay a lot. However, this AVG software is even more complete than other brands out there. I have the AVG antivirus and I can manage my subscriptions from the same app which is very convenient.
The installation is quick, a couple of clicks here and a couple of clicks there, you sign up and you're ready to start using the program, from clearing the cache, to "put to sleep" programs that slow down your computer. The interface is simple but with essential information that is very helpful in the first times you use the program.
I think it is a very good alternative to keep a computer clean and more if you have the AVG antivirus to work together, excellent price for an annual subscription and easy to install.

Sweet , simple and convenient software. Saves you time with auto updates. I installed on 2 gaming desktop,s which I custom built. On my second custom built gaming desktop which I have solid state drives only a small but noticeable start up increase but very satisfied because this desktop is already bulit for max speed. Working in IT, family and friends often contact me when their PC is slow, or they have a problem. Doing what AVG PC TuneUp does manually on an old PC that is running slow can take many hours to do. Even then not everything this program does will be checked and fixed. For example, the registry cleanup may not be as thorough as there can be tens of thousands of entries.
My standard recommendation is to back up the data, pick up a copy of AVG TuneUp, ensure their antivirus is current and run a full scan of each. The recommendations are solid and often resolve the issue or greatly improve the situation. Only once have I encounter a problem where the PC performed worse. There is a “Rescue Center” where you can review and undo the changes made by PC TuneUp.
I have seen dramatic performance increases and stability issues resolved on older computers that have not had regular maintenance performed, especially those with mechanical hard drives. If you have an older PC, I highly recommend the program. Its far cheaper than a computer tech going over your PC, and you get the benefit of maintaining your PC to keep it performing well.
While I did not notice a speed increase on my very fast I7 laptop with SSD drive after running AVG TuneUp, some broken shortcuts and registry entries from old applications were removed as well as over 7GB of temp/junk files. The other standard checks it does came up clean on my 3-month-old laptop.
Newer PC’s with fast processors, especially those with SSD drives typically do not see the dramatic performance increase found on older PC’s. However, AVG TuneUp may still help resolve some problems. Regardless of the PC age or performance level, regular maintenance is still required to keep even Windows 10 running reliably and this will cover what’s needed.
AVG TuneUp is a worthwhile purchase whether you are looking to get some lost performance restored, fix a problem, or just wish to keep your PC running in top form to avoid slowness and problems in the first place. The subscription is far less than a tech support visit and the downtime that requires. It’s well worth the money. Pay a little money now, or pay much more later in time and money.

my only gripe, but its my opinion. they should include this already in there software. you are paying a yearly subscription already, and have to add more. i am sure that is just my opinion but like i said, you have to pay for a subscription each year to have it. so would be nice to just have it all.
outside of that though. it works great like i said.

I've used free computer cleaning and optimizing software in the past with little success. Yes, they are able to clean junk files, but I found that some of those "hidden" cache files help make your computer run more efficiently. So while you might save some space on your hard drive, often times this comes at a sacrifice in performance (contrary to what you would expect).
I thought AVG Tuneup would help me (more easily) get rid of unnecessary programs that I've acquired on my work desktop over the years. For some reason I had more faith in it because it wasn't a free program. I also installed it on my Google Pixel 4 XL, but because of my experiences, I won't be installing it on my personal laptop and desktop.
The set up is dead simple, you simply create an AVG account and you download the software from the web. Or on your phone, you simply download the app.
First, my experience on my desktop. I am using a HP gaming PC with Ryzen processor and AMD graphics. It's not a screamer, but it's definitely a proficient machine. Prior to installing and running the AVG Tuneup software, I really didn't have any complaints with my PC. My only complaint was the HDD, which was getting filled up. I ran the software and "deleted" the hidden cache files, fixed broken registries (which required a reboot), hibernated programs that purportedly slowed the time it takes to start my machine (oh the irony with that one) but since then, everything has been a mess. My computer went from starting up within seconds, to now literally taking 30 seconds to log in, when I open Outlook 365 it crashes, sometimes turning my entire screen black. After multiple attempts (sometimes restarting my machine several times) everything turns on and starts working. And it seems that once everything is loaded (which is a several minute process) everything seems to work as normal. The only thing I could pin it on was the AVG Tuneup software. I, unfortunately, had to delete it from my computer and seek assistance from our IT consultant to get my computer back “to normal.”
My take away from the PC experience is that you have to have some knowledge of what it is you’re deleting. You can’t simply take the program’s word for it. You might be deleting critical data (or at least data that helps improve/speed up performance). I’m no IT professional, but that’s my guess best as to what happened. I think I started “hibernating” programs that AVG deemed as slowing down my machine that are somehow pertinent and required for efficient running of my computer.
The Android experience, however, has been much better. I downloaded the app from Google Play and typed in my AVG account. The app walks you through a similar process as the PC, identifying potential memory issues (which is a bigger deal to me since my Pixel 4 XL only has 64 GBs) and helping improve my RAM (I had no idea that certain apps, like the ones I barely use, took up so much memory). While maybe its mental, I did feel a minor boost in speed and battery life in my phone. I’m not saying it’s enough to say you have to have this program, but it was beneficial.
My only concern is, is it worth it? Google bakes in battery and memory optimization software that achieved the same goals. Although I will say AVG does a good job of clearing out cache data that tends to grow over time within apps. But other than that, I don’t feel like it’s worth it. If I didn’t have any problems with my PC and it actually worked (disclaimer: my issues very well could be user error, my point is, it’s not clear as to how best to use the software for those without intimate knowledge of how an actual PC actually works), then I would use this app on my phone. But I don’t think I would purchase AVG tuneup just to get it on my phone.
The price is nice if you want to cover multiple devices and you know how to use tune-up or software optimization software, but for the uneducated like myself, I can’t recommend this program.

AVG has been a long lasting and reliable brand whose products do what they say without any complications. I've used AVG Free for anti-virus for over 10 years and finally used their paid version. Their TuneUp program is amazing at cleaning up computers that have a lot of junk on it.
If you know someone that doesn't really maintain their computer well or even know what CCleaner is for example, this might be a good little gift to get for them.
