I feel like a little kid as I’m riding it. I intentionally pretend I’m pedaling. (Hah!)
C’mon a scooter with built in GPS and anti-theft features. That’s one of the reasons I got it.
Sleep mode really works to save battery so please use it when you know you’re scooter is at a safe place. As describe it will disable important security features.
Oh and if you’ll like to get a free bird helmet just go to the Bird app. Go to ‘Safety’ scroll down and ‘Select Order Helmet’
Remember to wear a helmet. =]

I'm an employee of Best Buy and have had the opportunity to use the Bird scooter for more than 3 weeks. I'm going to break this review down into a few sections focusing on the various aspects that make up the scooter. Before I begin, however, I want to note that I'm within the max weight capacity, I have a smart device which is required to use the bird because of the app and that I live in a big city. Overall, I found this to be a very effective means of commuting transportation and a lot of fun to use recreation-ally.
APP
Before getting this, I'd ridden the Bird via their app service on a vacation and was pleasantly impressed that their standalone --sell able- unit also uses the same app. It shows you the gps coordinates of your scooter, alerts you if your scooter is being moved while locked, allows you to easily unlock your bird with the app scanner, and shows you the battery capacity to help you plan your ride distance.
SCOOTER FEATURES
Riding at night can be dangerous but this unit comes with both a headlight that's always lit up and tailight that blinks repeatedly illuminating brighter when the break is depressed, both features worked well under the city light and made me feel safer while riding.
RIDING THE BIRD
The scooter is easy to start up, you simply kick with your foot and hit the the thumb throttle. It accelerates pretty quickly getting to top speed of 18mph in approximately 4 seconds. It climbs hills nicely but note, I don't have particularly steep hills where I was riding it. I researched the max hill slope and couldn't find Bird calling this out, however, I've seen similar scooters call out a max slope grade of 20% and am confident this could climb that.
In summary, what I liked most about this was that I could ride it 25 miles on a full charge, lock it at my destination via the app knowing that it was safe and that I could see its location and if it was being tampered with on the app at all times. It was dependable, fun to ride whether to get groceries, get to work, or joyride around the lakes and it fully recharged in less than 7 hours.
The only critique I found is that it's pretty heavy (40 lbs) and not foldable, therefore if you need to climb stairs to store it, it could be inconvenient. I highly recommend for those in search of a e-vehicle that will be dependable for your commute, go long distances without recharging and give you the piece of mind that its safe wherever you decide to park and store it.

Disconnects when stopped for a short bit while still on it. Properly locked and unlocked when in use and out of use. Stranded now 2 times. Device goes dark and does not connect but says connected via app. Photos show connected via app then saying it’s not connected while connected. Contacted support twice via app no response.

We’ve seen plenty of E-Scooters around here in the Phoenix area and I’ve read plenty information online and in magazines about them over the years, “just never tried one out”. We have a Fiat 500e electric vehicle and thought this would be a great addition for us to run around our subdivision with and get the mail “cluster boxes a few blocks away”.
Unboxing and Setting up:
The Bird arrived in a very large “but relatively thin” shipping box, and was surprised upon opening it that it was almost completely assembled. The scooter was well protected by a large Styrofoam insert that the bottom half sat in and the upper was covered in a cardboard insert. The only thing to do was to attach the upper handle bar and housing to the upright. There were 4 star head machine screws included in the packaging and after cutting the zip tie keeping the sideways mounted handle bars from moving around I just had to insert the top into the upright, tighten the included machine screws with the “also included” star wrench and done. That’s it, nothing more to assemble, super simple.
I plugged in the included charger and let it get a full charge before going any further. There’s a light on the power supply that will glow “Green” once that is finished. Next I set up the app on our phones and attempted to scan the barcode mounted on the handlebars. Now this is where I did run into a problem.
The app stated that “the device is out of the service area”, and could not get it to unlock no matter how much we tried. I did find Birds phone number on their web page and tried to call them but with the lockdown their greeting stated that they are handling everything by email. I immediately emailed them the information and the issue I was having and waited.
After waiting a couple hours I decided to give it a try again and this time the vehicle unlocked and said it was ready to ride “yippee”. Not sure if they saw my email and corrected the issue but it didn’t take long to resolve. Not long after that I received both a txt message and an email message asking if I was having any issues still as they show it’s now unlocked. Great customer service during these trying times, and getting it up and running quickly did instill more confidence in the companies tech support.
The APP:
We installed the app on our Samsung phones and it’s very simple / straight forward to use. On the main screen there’s a small icon of a scooter, tap that “not the ride button” and it will bring up the Bird that is registered under your account. There you will see a “slide to unlock” slider and sliding this over unlocks and activates the scooter. There’s also information in there about miles ridden, battery percentage, and a map showing the location of the scooter.
I do like that there’s a security system built in and when activated the device will beep if moved and an alert is sent to your phone immediately. There isn’t physical on/off switch on the scooter itself and the way it’s sealed up turning it off to disable the GPS and cellular connection would be difficult. You can also put the scooter to “sleep”, but this disables the tracking and security system so you’ll want to be sure to store it somewhere that’s secure if you want to shut it down completely.
Getting Ready to Ride:
Now after unlocking the scooter with the app the headlight comes on and the tail light begins to flash steadily. These are nice safety features to have and you don’t have to worry about remembering to turn them on as they automatically turn on. After donning our riding helmets “purchased before receiving” and proper attire in case of a tumble we were off to start learning how to ride this.
Riding:
Now this is the first time riding anything like this for me, and my wife hasn’t ridden anything close for many years. We have a long stretch of room in our house that we took turns practicing our balance and getting the feel of it before trying it out. We also took some time getting used to how you push to start and how the throttle and breaks behaved. I’m glad we did this as just going out and taking off wouldn’t have been a good idea for either of us. I grew up riding dirt bikes, motor cycles and 4 wheelers, but haven’t used one in a good 25 years so I was really rusty.
Next we took it out to our backyard, not large, but bigger than the area we were trying in the house. Getting it going there was easier and I didn’t have much of a problem doing that. My wife also had fun learning how to ride it and was really enjoying how to learn the right way to get it going. We did find that it was very important to have proper and quality footwear on “especially for us first timers”, this helps with balance immensely.
This morning was the big test “for us at least”, and decided since Sunday is usually a very quiet day on our street it would be the perfect time to give it a go. My wife was first up, and was fully outfitted with protective gear “see pic”. The practice before hand helped a lot as she took right off without a problem.
She took it very carefully and did a full loop around our block, returning with a huge grin, she had a blast. She says that it’s very easy to control on hard pavement over our back yard “but that was good for getting a feel for it”. She can see that this is going to be used quite a bit when going to the mail box cluster or visiting friend in other parts of the subdivision.
After watching her I decided I just had to try it. Just a helmet and gloves for me but at least I had a helmet on :) . I agree with her that getting it going and riding was much easier than our back yard. And getting a feel for it there was a really good idea as the lawn is much softer to land on just in case. Power wise I was very impressed. I’m 210lbs and it didn’t have any problems getting me moving, and plenty quickly too. I had it topped out for a little bit and that was plenty fast for me, “anything faster I’d want a bike or sit down type scooter”. After returning from my trips around the block I also returned with a big grin, and hadn’t had this much fun in quite a while. I do have arthritis problems with my back and hips, and have had a total knee replacement. None of these caused me any problems riding the Bird which I had a lot of concerns about. Although I have to admit I’m a little sore from all the twisting and moving around that I’m not used to doing “proves I’m out of shape”, and this will hopefully get me more mobile and help with that too.
Conclusion:
The Bird One is a quality built scooter, it was larger and heavier duty than I expected. It has no flex what so ever when standing on it. The platform you stand on is roughly 6” wide and 20” long, so there’s plenty of room to put your feet. Power seemed very ample and I never once wished for any more. We do like that it has a headlight and tail light for safety, and there’s built in tracking so you’ll know where it is at all times. There are two small led indicators on the top of the handle bars that aren’t referenced in the manual and after reaching out to Birds’ tech support they informed me that the “green” led is power and stays on while the unit is awake and the “red” led indicates a cellular connection, and it will be solid when the unit is locked and off when unlocked.
We do wish that the neck could be folded so transporting it in the back of the vehicle would be easier, but it does fit in the back of our SUV at least. That’s really the only negative I could find and not an issue for us but if you are wanting one that folds you’ll have to take this into consideration.
Maintenance wise there’s really nothing to do other than make sure it’s clean. We wipe it down after each use. Just check the tires and brakes like you would on a bike and be sure everything is working properly before taking off. There’s nothing to open on the battery compartment and there are a lot of fasteners holding it together so I wouldn’t attempt opening it “this can also void your warranty”.
We’ve already put a few miles on it and I can see us adding a lot more very quickly. If you are looking around for a very well built and quality scooter you would be hard pressed to find a better device.

So I'm new to "e-scooters-, I've ridden a million kick scooters as a kid, but nothing like this.. I'm 35 and I weigh about 210-220 and this scooter is fast and powerful enough to scoot me around with a backpack full of groceries, or my tools, and I had no issues with the ride, or battery life that made me upset. I was easily able to reach 12-15mph and hills didn't really bother it (I live in Eugene so there aren't really hills.) and the battery was still at 56% charge after I rode 10 miles while just "flooring" it so the battery life is pretty close to advertised and I weigh towards the stated maximum weight. Besides the obvious side effects of no suspension and an occasional bumpy road. aside from that, these things are so cool I ended up buying the Bird es4-800 as well.. these things are ADDICTIVE.. I'm in love with how quiet, efficient, quick to charge (3 hours from 0% to 100%!) and its SO fun!
If you are really interested in a new way to get around town for those close to home errands, or just to go unwind? this is perfect.. I know its a bit pricey, but its worth it for the quality of the build, and the level of service Bird provides blew my mind. I'm not easy on companies either.. all I can say is you definitely want this, so just do it.. go ahead.. you will not regret it..
The only other issue besides the no suspension, is I prefer there to not be an app controlling things? But, that is just MY preference. objectively, the app works fine.

I ordered this scooter in the hopes of using it as my daily commute vehicle. I received the item quicker than anticipated and everything on Best Buy’s end was perfect.
Now the scooter, it never worked. I understand there is bound to be a dud every now and then. The most worrisome part; the customer service. After receiving the scooter and fully charging it. The app wouldn’t let me pair my scooter. Something about invalid code. I immediately followed the instructions they had to email customer support the serial number to activate the scooter. Then ensued a 11 day waiting period for a RESPONSE after multiple attempts to contact them. By the time I had even received a response on the 11th day I had already returned the item to Bestbuy as defective. The lack of support for a scooter that REQUIRES A APP AND INTERNET CONNECTION at all times. This thing will be a paper weight once the stop supporting that app. In the middle of your trip if your scooter doesn’t want to pair with the app you will not be able to contact anyone. They will respond weeks later. You will have to walk this scooter home when you inevitability get stuck.
You will get stuck.
Get a Segway Ninebot Max or Unagi. Better range, better power, not tethered to an app every time you want to use, actually have customer service when you have an issue.

Awesome scooter! Gets up to good speed, a very smooth ride and very sturdy. Battery seems to last a decent amount.. I wouldn't say 25 miles but then again I'm usually going up and down hills which I'm sure puts more strain on the battery. Only issues I've had are with waking it up or unlocking/locking it with the app. A lot of times I will have to force close the app a couple times before it will work. Other than that it has been great

The scooter has all the specs you want in an electric scooter, range, battery life, speed. However, it must be said the scooter itself has MULTIPLE problems syncing appropriately with the app, and it gets eventually resolved but after 30 wasted minutes. This has happened 3 times already and I only have 46 miles on this scooter. The handle also came loose after only 20 or so miles.
Overall, this product is one of the better ones (before it breaks). If I had to purchase this again, I would say it's not worth the $1000 spent.

Quality control
Now, overall this is a high end "beginner" scooter. I call it a beginner scooter because it is slow. 18mph just doesn't do it for me. Not for $1300. Not for $1000. This scooter should sit in the 600-800 range. Now for quality control. The first one I got broke in 5 minutes when the stem screw broke while tightening. The second one I got was shipped without the 3 collar screws that hold the stem. There are a grand total of 4 screws that are supposed to ship with this scooter. I had an issue with all of them over two shipments. However, Bird customer support is responsive and rectified the situation. Boom. There is something to be said for customer service and you will pay more for that. Also, props to bestbuy for their returns and customer service as well. I always go through bestbuy if possible. On to build quality. The screws holding the stem would often loosen up after rides which created a stem wobble. The screws would need to be tightened often. This is basically a nuisance but I feel it shouldn't happen so easily. Ride was decent compared to a razor but far less impressive than competitive scooters in the same price range. If you can pick one up for $800 or less then go for it. Otherwise, get a better product for the same money.

Hey, thanks for the review and I'm glad we were able to help you out quickly when you had an issue with your first delivery - I'll be sure to high-five our support team and pass along your appreciation. We appreciate your feedback and think you'll realize more of the value over time as you ride your Bird One day in and day out as it's going to be much more durable than some of the others you mentioned (or that you've probably ridden before). Either way, enjoy the ride and thanks for buying a Bird One and if you ever need anything else, you know where to find us.

Sturdy Built But Lacking a Few Features

This is my third personal scooter that I own and by far the most expensive. I was super excited to get it, but after a week of use there are just a few things that keep this model from being five-star in my opinion.
First, let’s talk about what’s good. It’s built sturdy, with a wide comfortable deck, and can carry 220lbs of passenger and cargo. Now, my other scooters are not built near as good as this one yet also claim to max out at 220 lbs. I’m 230lbs and while I can ride any of my scooters, the Bird does a better job of getting me up a steep hill, so it definitely has a strong motor. However, due to the weight of the scooter + me I can’t get it to the top speed of 18mph. The is minor but the sturdiness extends to the kickstand.
It comes in a fairly large box nearly completely assembled, you simply need to attach the handlebars with four screws using the provided allen wrench. Then plug the charger in, and install or open the Bird app then scan the QR code on the handlebar. You lock and unlock the scooter using the app, which is great, but also can become tiresome if you’re doing short trips or an outright disaster if you’re phone dies. If the scooter is locked and tampered with it’ll beep but it’s not all that loud.
The things that irk me about this scooter really comes down to why are they missing at this price point? One, there should be some type of LCD that tells me my speed and ideally battery life. My other scooters have this super-handy feature and I sorely miss it every time I get on the Bird. Second, the tires are airless and there is no suspension. Airless is good in that you don’t have to worry about flats, but you will feel every bump and pothole in the street or crack in the sidewalk. I wish there at least some sort of front suspension to absorb some of this. Finally, as this is not my primary mode of transportation, I typically ( before quarantine) would take these downtown with me on public transit or put it under the seat of my truck. The Bird doesn't fold at all so you'd have to stand with it on public transit and the weight makes it unwieldy to put into other vehicles.
Pros:
Sturdy Solid Build
Powerful motor
18 Mph Top Speed
Built-in GPS
Comes almost fully assembled
Cons:
No speedometer readout
Heavy, does not fold
Expensive
Must have app to use
No suspension
Overall, if you are someone who is serious about using an e-scooter as your primary means of urban travel, the study build quality should have you looking at the Bird One. I’ve been using my much cheaper scooters up until now and honestly have been just fine, although if used everyday I'd feel much better about the reliability and ruggedness of the Bird.

I started my new job in Midtown, downtown Sacramento and there’s nowhere to park except parking garages which is still ruffly 2 miles away from my location. This cute little scooter fits in the back of my trunk and then I can use it to get to where I need to go. My only concern is making sure the scooter is customized to you because I’ve already had people trying to scan it and use it for a rental, my model is pink and coated and stickers lol

Coolest Scooter EVER!

This scooter is by far the most awesome one I've ever driven. When you first pull it out of the box, there is a very small amount of assembly required. You must place 4 small screws into it to secure the handle bars to the frame. Other than that, charge it up and ride! This thing has a very sturdy build quality. It is tough and you can feel that when you touch it. The scooter is on the heavy side and is not easy to lift if you need to pick it up. To use it you must download the Bird app on your smart device. Once you do that you scan a QR code on the scooter and the app will sync with the scooter. Use the app to control features on the scooter (led headlight, lock, unlock, sleep, etc), to see a GPS location of the scooter on a map, and to contact tech support if needed. Once the scooter is unlocked it is ready to ride. This unlocks the wheels so they will freely spin. If it is not unlocked, the wheels are very difficult to turn and the scooter sounds a theft alarm. Be cautious using the sleep mode, as I found it very difficult to bring it out of sleep mode. I actually contacted support who informed me that sleep mode was only appropriate to use when the scooter would be stored without use for over a month. Other than that, the scooter should be left active and plugged in when not in use. On my first ride it was honestly a little shaky, but once I got the hang of it I was off at full speed. To start the scooter you must first push off like a manual scooter, then push down the throttle. This scooter is advertised to go up to 18 mph and to go up to 25 miles on a single change. Honestly, this will all depend on the terrain. I live in an area with lots of hills. My first ride was almost 9 miles (according to the Bird app) and I was at about 45% battery when I stopped. This leads me to believe I could have gotten around 15 to 16 miles total on a single charge. This could definitely be improved on flat ground. The handles have a brake handle, throttle switch, and a small noise maker. The brakes are a nice touch. They won't slam you into an immediate complete stop, but they'll definitely slow you down. The throttle is VERY responsive, sometimes almost too responsive! You must push it down easy or the scooter will take off! The ride isn't necessarily the most comfortable because there is nothing to absorb any shock. On smooth roads it is fine, but on rough roads it can jar you pretty hard. Other than my issues with the sleep mode, the only other issue I have is with storage/portability. This scooter does not fold down to make storage/transport easier. If you wanted to load it up and take it on vacation it would take up a significant amount of room. This is really made for a commute around cities from your home to point B and back. This is definitely not made for ease of travel to vacation destinations. All in all, this is a well built scooter that is a blast to ride. I felt like a kid again and I enjoy going out and exploring on the scooter. It's definitely not going to fit on everyone's budget because it is seriously expensive for a scooter, but it would be perfect for somebody who commutes to work by walking or biking. It is definitely a fun and easy to use machine! You won't be disappointed!

Nice scooter with great range. I had to return it because the area where I live doesn’t have good cellphone service and the app needs to be connected to the internet to start the scooter. Wish the scooter can fold so I can load it into my car and bring it to the city. Wish the scooter would also have shocks cause small bumps feel rough.

REALLY inconvenient that the bird app is required for use of scooter. You should just be able to turn it on/off. The app is always crashing, having bluetooth problems, and trouble connecting to/waking the scooter. Also if you don’t have phone signal you can’t connect to scooter. Besides that, it rides GREAT, and is really fast! I’d definitely recommend besides the connectivity issues.

Hello and thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear your issues with the app, however it is a necessity for the unit so that you have the ability with locking through the app allows you you to lock the wheels when not in use and also keep an eye on it's GPS location when not in use. The app will give a connection error every now and then, but a quick app restart usually fixes it. We hope you continue to enjoy your Bird One!
