Rarely do we get sequels that measure up to the original let alone when they are more than 30 years apart. This movie absolutely nails what made the first movie such a classic and may even surpass it. You will just be in awe of the visuals in this movie alone. The plot will take you on a journey that examines what it means to have a soul and whether it is earned or just given by the choices and actions that are made long the way. Movie is definitely more of sci-fi drama than an action movie so don't go in expecting huge action set pieces. This movie is absolutely meant to be seen on 4k and nothing else.

Villeneuve gives us a great Blade Runner sequel

The long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 science fiction masterwork, “Blade Runner” possessed me unlike any other film in 2017. As I accumulated four theatrical sojourns watching “Blade Runner 2049” I found a deeper and richer cinematic experience with each viewing, one that, to me, even surpassed the original as a work of serious art (for this is no action picture). The reason for this undoubtedly was due to Scott entrusting the great Canadian director, Denis Villeneuve (who previously made “Incendies”, “Prisoners”, “Sicario” and the previous year’s “Arrival”) to honor the original film’s world and philosophical themes while laying claim to his own vision and personal style. Taking place 30 years after Deckart and Racheal emerged from the elevator to leave the smog and overpopulation of 2019 Los Angeles, the new film follows a recent model replicant (with a normal human lifespan) called ‘K’ (played perfectly by an appropriately laconic Ryan Gosling) as he investigates a growing replicant freedom uprising to discover the remains of a once-pregnant replicant, something that leads him not only into mysterious territory in which he discovers the now reclusive Rick Deckart (Harrison Ford in one of his most subtle performances), but also leads him into a journey into his own identity. Darker and more sparse than the original, “Blade Runner 2049” goes into more nihilistic territory that becomes its own original film while respecting the original (as well as the Philip K. Dick source novel). I think this balance between honoring the original film and reaching out with its own different form to become something different, all perfectly designed and executed by Villeneuve and his crew, is arguably its greatest achievement. Of course its cynical detractors point to its length – 164 minutes – and criticize the film’s slowness, but I praise it for having the courage to allow its story to develop in a carefully measured fashion, taking the time to engulf its willing and patient viewers into its world view. I liken it to turning over one’s self to the listening of a Wagner opera like “Parsifal” in which time seems to stop as one is encompassed completely into another place, another time -- and after its long viewing I seem to awaken as if having submitted to a dream, emerging somewhat reborn and more enlightened with knowledge of the human experience. And that is really what this and the original film are really about: underneath its marvelous science fiction trappings with its state-of-the-art production design and special effects (often eschewing CGI for authentically-constructed sets and realistic miniatures), and heightened to a level of unmatched beauty by the cinematography of Roger Deakens, the film is really a thoughtful meditation on what makes us human. To me this is the most accomplished film of 2017, and one I long to experience again and again in future viewings. Unfortunately, the 3D experience on Blu-ray is slightly on the dark side and, since the company didn't think the film warranted a 7.1 Atmos track, it might be better to watch it in 2D Blu-ray. The 3D was great in the theater however, but they kind of messed this up putting it on disc.

This film looks spectacular on 4K UHD Blu-ray. The sound is great as well. I really enjoyed the film and actually liked it better than the original Blade Runner film. I've seen this on regular Blu-ray as well (which looked great) and this benefits significantly from HDR and the added resolution levels of 4K. I felt it necessary to buy the original on 4K as well and look forward to seeing that again in 4K when I have time. My TV is the 65 inch TCL series 6 which I purchased over a year ago. My disk player is an Oppo UDP-205.

Yeah I could stream it on multiple devices, and it will play just the same. But using a real Blu-Ray player with this movie has been awesome! I can notice the sound, and the picture quality! The movie is really awesome, one of my favorites!

This is coming from a longtime fan of the original author, the original film and a huge fan of 2049 for what it's worth but this serves as both a great standalone film as well as a sequel. Some of the best sci-fi on screen in a long time that respects the intelligence of its audience. It's long...but in my book that's just more time to enjoy what's being put on the screen. As for the 4k release it's the first 4k BluRay I have purchased and it does not disappoint. The film is a showcase for high resolution content and HDR.

If you have a OLED TV and a decent Atmos setup with some good subwoofers this is a must have for testing your theater. The opening scene put my SVS PB 2000 Pros to work and the rest of the movie is pure eye and ear candy.

Villeneuve is one of all times most capable science fiction director and thanks to him this sequel to a true classic did not go sideways. The 4k uhd Version looks and sounds stunning!

Now I know what the unicorn symbolized

Blade Runner 2049 is a worthy, though not perfect, sequel to Blade Runner. It makes the viewer think. It does answer some questions raised in the original film, while raising more of its own. Some are answered by some of the extra features. After all the years of wonder what the unicorn symbolized in the 1982 film, now I know! It did take a couple of viewings for me to realize it. Without giving it away, the plot of this movie is a big clue. If you enjoyed the original Blade Runner, be sure to watch this one in Blu-Ray format.

It a nice movie, decent actions. Got nice sound tracks with lot of low bass and rumbles . Similar feeling and value as of those Guardian of the Galaxy movies. Nice to have in 4k collection.

    A Worthy Sequel

I was very concerned when I first heard of this film. Wouldn't a sequel, by its very nature, ruin the ambiguity of the originals ending? As it turns out, not at all. I won't spoil anything here, but the questions from the end of the first film remain intact. The characters are fully fleshed out and the visuals are breathtaking. It's easy to see why this film won the Best Cinematography Oscar. For viewing continuity, be sure to watch the Final Cut of the first Blade Runner, as that edition is what this one follows.

Blade Runner 2049 tops Ridley Scott's original classic in every single way. There's an actual emotional heart to the film this time, beautifully carried by Ana de Armas' gorgeous performance alongside Ryan Gosling's simmering stoicness. The score is one of the best musical collection's I've ever heard, and Roger Deakins more than finally earns his Oscar with flooring cinematography popping with spectacular visuals and color unlike anything else ever put to the screen.

The packaging was perfect albeit without any slipcover. The video quality was as good as Blu-ray can provide and the 3D was a fun way to experience the film! Recommended for sci-fi, film, or 3D enthusiasts!

If you're a superfan of this film, then you know there have been so many iterations of the film that it's hard to keep up with which one is which. Luckily this set as every single version, so you can watch every progression in all its glory (or not so much if it's the theatrical version). The special features are great, the booklet is impressive and the video quality is superb (HDR). In short, don't think just buy it. Go. Now. Do it.
