The game is promoted as a first person shooter and an RPG. I did not expect much from the RPG component (I suppose in terms of story) and no surprises there. It seems that the 'story' of the game is very ancillary, with focus on walking around and shooting just for the sake of shooting. So in that respect, I was slightly disappointed as a more immersive storyline would have made the game much more memorable.
PROS:
- The graphics and the feel of the game are fantastic!
- The guns are fun and there are plenty of them.
- It has a nice Arcade type feel to it as well which is upbeat and engaging.
- Sense of humor in the game
- The game does not take itself too seriously
CONS
- Shallow to no story (you walk around and kill for the sake of... killing... becomes boring)
- Game Saves - VERY Frustrating as it is a checkpoint system, and if you die or exit the game, you start from your previous checkpoint and all the enemies that you have already killed are back there again! In that sense the game has no 'memory' and feels VERY archaic.
- Redundant: like the save situation, if you leave area A of the game to go area B, and then return back to area A, all the enemies that you have previously killed in A are back to where you found them originally..doing the exact same things as before. Very tedious.
- I don't think this game has a high replay value
OVERALL: Fun quick shooter. If the game had a stronger RPG component and a more 'adult' save system, it would be a solid title. However, toss this one with any other linear shooters.

I bought this game based on a video i watched and how it was bragging on how many guns the game has. I couldn't be happier with this title. This game has more weapons than you will ever find or learn how to use them. It has a mix of pistols, machine guns, smgs, shotguns, snipers and alien weapons. You can use mods like fire, static, explosive, corrosive and much more to mutilate enemies. The game is much like fallout with lots and lots of missions to keep you busy. I can't really describe how awesome the multiplayer is but it never gets old blasting away and dueling with your friends. If you love shooters buy this game for real. You can find rare guns and you can only carry so many in your inventory so this game needs an update or patch to be able to store your loot but other than that its flawless.

I'm what you would definitely categorize as an 'old-school gamer'. I've played every system produced since the Atari 2600 (Yes, including the Vectrex & Colecovision) and owned almost as many. These days, I don't have much time to invest in games but that hasn't shortchanged for love for them.
Historically, I haven't been a fan of first person shooters. They just haven't been my cup of tea. Even recent games such as Bio-Shock and Fallout 3, which incorporate FPS elements, have been a challenge to hold my interest. After playing Borderlands for almost two weeks now, I can say that I plan on going back and revisiting each of them.
The cell-shaded graphics are a great alternative to the screen congestion normally present in FPS's. That combined with the relatively mellow pace at the start of the game help the player ease into the environment.
I prefer to look at this game as an RPG (Role-Playing Game) that uses the first person perspective for a combat system. Most of my enjoyment of this game stems from the quest completion feature that emulates many of the RPG's from the late 80's & early 90's. The leveling-up and seemingly infinite weapon upgrades keep the gamers attention throughout the quest. Even better, each of the four characters interact with the varied weapon types in different fashions. The hunter, while amazingly proficient with sniper rifles & revolvers, doesn't handle the shotgun as well as the brute or the combat rifle as well as the Soldier, etc, etc... Also, the ability to assign skill points that are earned from leveling-up provides even more variety. Each character has 21 additional skill attributes, broken down into 3 categories with 7 skills per. Each skill can be advanced in 5 phases. If you do the math, at one skill point per level, it would take a gamer 105 levels to max out on each skill. from what I'm told, your character maxes out at level 50. You could play the same character multiple times and choose to focus on developing a different skill at each play-through and never end up with the same gaming experience.
And then there's the on-line feature. Over XBox live, this game is an amazing treat. Regardless of the number of items on screen, I have yet to experience slowdown of ANY kind. Playing on-line also allows each gamer to share their items with one another. This helps those players interested in finishing the game sooner rather than later and is an excellent option for quick level-ups. My only gripe is the inability to use the split-screen feature on-line. If you have more than one person in your house that wants to play the game simultaneously over XBox Live, you'll need an additional console, TV and a second copy of the game. But really, when your only complaint about the game is the fact that you can't get enough play time, how bad can that be?
Bottom line; this games offers both the explorer-type and blast-through-type gamer the experience their looking for. It's a can't miss title. Great job, Gearbox Software.

I find this game to be very enjoyable and very addicting. I own the game on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and I play them both often. If you like first person shooters, awesome DLC, a challenge, and humorous anecdotes then this game is the game for you! It features tons of trophies/achievements that challenge one and has a plethora of in-game challenges/milestones that make you want to blow s*** up!
As for replay value, you can play the game over 3 times. Can't say much about the first play-through in terms of difficulty but the second play-though features the same enemies but at a much higher level! The third play-though, dubbed play-though 2.5, features enemies at the maximum level, 50. Tons of challenges and the higher the play-through, the better items you get!
CLIFFS: Cool game brah!

Overall this is an outstanding game. The campaign is a hoot, especially if you have a friend or two to play with you (and if you don't you can find one with the matchmaking system online). The graphics are amazing and the RPG feel with different loot and customizable character options really give this game a new feel from other FPS games. The campaign also invokes a sense of humor, as some of the NPC's and enemy names are pretty funny.
There are a few things that bother me that I think could have been fixed though. Fast travel between areas takes too long to get, so you are left with driving or a lot of the times running/walking through lower level areas where you just aggro all the enemies in that area. If they would have just implemented fast travel earlier in the game, or prevented lower level enemies from attack you as easily, it would have fixed that problem. Also the whole plot in the story is pretty uninteresting and kind of takes a bench seat to the action, which ususally isn't a good thing.....but I found myself not caring what the story was most of the time because of the superb gameplay.
Overall I would rate this game a 9 out of 10, definately worth buying.

The game is very easy to pick up and play if you are familiar with the control configuration of the Call of Duty games. It plays like a first person shooter with elements of a role playing game: leveling up with experience points for extended health and better weapon damage.
While the story of the game is not extremely intriguing there is enough there to keep a player interested and complete the average length game. For some, watching the experience point meter go up is the incentive to keep playing. The story closely resembles the Mad Max movies complete with bandits running around in a desert environment. (There is even a character named "mad mel.")
While It is possible to complete the story mode by yourself, the charm of this game is playing cooperatively with a few friends/strangers online. While traveling together at any point if two players feel the need, they can easily go into a duel mode to fight against one another if they so choose. When that is over then they can go right back into the story.
Borderlands is a great game for people with a hording personality. If your house is loaded to the brim with junk and you have trails cut to get in and out you will love this game. There are so many items and weapons to collect along the way that you may find yourself having more friends join the game just so they can store your items because you've run out of inventory space.
This is a really good game but the replay value is a bit low for me. I've completed the story twice in order to obtain some of the achievements but if that does not interest you, you may find it better to pass this game on to someone else.

Awesome Co-op Game

This game is great if you have a few others playing with you on Xbox Live/system link since all 4 of the different characters can increase certain aspects of what your weapon/shields/ammo/life/accuracy/experience does. There are 50 levels for your characters and each character type has 3 "talent" type trees to build up after level 5.
The gameplay is somewhat short with others, but the quest system and ability to cooperate through quests is amazingly enjoyable.
Controls are easy, and the sheer variety of weapons from: Machine guns, revolvers, shotguns, SMGs, sniper rifles, repeater pistols, and rocket launchers. All of the weapons and grenades/shields have a level of quality that makes the variety increase even higher from (lowest) white, green, blue, purple, yellow/orange (highest) [Like World of Warcraft]. This adds another neat element to the game with loot searching...the only problem is that it is like Diablo looting--run to pick up first kind of loot.
They have released a Zombieland expac already which adds more enjoyment to the original game with an extra place to kill new creatures, and more quests. It is nice.

This is a very fun game. You get paid for doing missions and experience points for every thing you accomplish. You can choose from 4 different types of characters to start off. Every time you level up, you can unlock different abilities and skills based on your character type. The best part of the game is finding rare guns and equipment. There is always a better gun somewhere. The only bad thing about this game is the way you get incapacitated. When you loose your health, you fall to the ground and the only way to get back up is by killing any one enemy- this gets really annoying because the enemies like to run away. Other than that, the game is very fun, especially with friends. This is worth buying because of the endless replay value.

I have played many role-playing games and first-person shooters, and I have to admit that I never really thought to combine the two. However, picking up Borderlands proved to be a great decision. The game is a perfect fusion of FPS gameplay with RPG elements. You get the action of a shooter game, coupled with the customization and character progression and leveling of an RPG. I have mainly played the game with 2 of my friends who got the game around when I did, but I have also had some solo excursions. The game's difficulty and treasure systems adapt well to a changing player amount. For example, my friends and I were exploring a new area in the game when we encountered a batch of enemies. We fought and fought, an epic battle that tested all of us, and required us to use teamwork to overcome the challenge presented. However, a little later I went back on my own, and the number and strength of enemies decreased, allowing me to have a continued challenge without it becoming tedious or unprofitable. Overall, Borderlands is an incredibly fun and addictive game, and I suggest anyone who enjoys shooters or RPGs give it a try. Oh, and out of the 4 mercenaries, anyone can be anyone. My one friend and I are both Mordecai the hunter, and we are able to play together. That was something I wanted to know before getting the game so I'm sure others are wondering.

I played it through with a friend and couldn't stop until we beat it. And then we did it again.
This game has four different classes to choose from so you can find the play style for you. It also has tons of weapons to find and upgrade your character with. Theres also a significant amount of DLC so if you get bored with the orignal game, you can always buy more content for 800MS Points.
The only negative I can think of is the story. It definitely wasn't engaging enough for me to pay attention to. But It didn't really matter as the game play was fun enough for me to ignore the story completely.
If you have a friend or a group of friends to play I say this game is a must-buy.

People who say bad things about this game obviously haven't played it very long. The game is a complete ranking system and in order to have fun and really take names is to rank up. The weapons get amazing towards halfway through the game and especially on Playthrough 2. Yes, you have to play the game twice to rank up to a 50, but it's so much fun the second time around. This game is all about customization. You pick which kind of play you want to be, as far as a Soldier, Hunter, Siren or Berserker. then you can go crazy on every detail as to how you play and what perks you like the most equipping different shields and mods for your class. Trust me, this game is extremely worth it.

This game has been in the works for a long time. It even had a complete graphics overhaul. Every review/preview for this game shows how well the graphics are. Also, so far there is believed to be over 1 million different variations of weapons. Every individual enemy is also varied. Plus don't forget that things like bunkers, weapons, and enemies are also varied each and every time you play the game. From the information I have found also up to 160 missions with over 100 + hours of game play. Hurry up 20 OCT

If you like a little sprinkle of RPG thrown in with your FPS, this is your game!
Set in the Mad-Max world of Pandora, Borderlands provides an interesting story along with character development. Make no mistake, though; Borderlands is first and foremost a shooter.
The damage model is a bit odd at times, though. You can shoot a target multiple times with a rocket launcher without killing it, but a slight tap of the vehicle bumper makes it go splat.

Originally I was not sure how I would like this game but after playing it for several hours, it is very addictive. First off, as mentioned in previous reviews, this game is first and foremost a FPS. The animation is very unique and I personally like the style of it. What makes this game so addictive is the cross between the FPS and RPG. I am not a big RPG fan and do not own many of that genre games, but after this one, I may look into some of the others. Back to the addictive part....the ability to upgrade your guns is great! There seems to be an endless amount of weapon combos. As you kill new enemies, you can pick up their guns as well as all the ones you find in the map. This game keeps you looking for more guns as you complete missions along the way.
There are some aspects of the game that are repetitive, but you get used to it and it helps you to upgrade and build your character. The maps are very large and in the beggining, you have to sprint everywhere, but you eventurally get vehicles to travel around.
The co-op (drop-in) is great. I have not yet played online, but I'm looking forward to seeing the online gameplay. The game itself seems to be very long, and it has a great replay value as you can choose between four characters, choose which missions you wish to complete first, and the guns will always be different.
If you love FPS games as well as RPG's, this game is a must. There is a reason this game has such a good rating. Buy it! You will not be dissapointed!

Amazing game! My friend and I played through it 3 times, as there are endless missions, several characters with different special attacks, and there is something called a second play through. You know when you get to the end of the game just as your character is super powerful, well with Borderlands you can play again, but with the same all powerful character, better weapons, and tougher enemies. It makes for endless fun as you can play in co-op with friends. The only real downside is the lame ending, but the game play is awesome. Highly recommended, especially if you have a friend (or up to 3) to play with.

This game reminds me of Phantasy Star, which was one of my favorite games for the longest time... Very cool idea with a multiplayer RPG, but Phantasy Star was third person, and sometimes I feel a need for the first person gameplay. That's where Borderlands comes in. The game itself is really fun, and it has a few dialogue/monologue scenes that are really funny. I have two gripes about it though, it is very repetitive. The weapons are essentially all the same, the only difference is the damage mods that they include, or the color or scope that they include. I guess that's not really a big deal, and the other thing is that the graphics aren't the greatest. They are more or less cartoony, but when it gets down to it, I've accepted the fact that this creates a much smoother gaming experience, and it makes long shots of scenery more possible than if there were loads of images to load up in every frame. Bottom line, funnest game I've played in a long time, and you can play with a partner on split screen, or 3 other people on X-Live, either way, it's great gameplay.

Borderlands is easily one of my favorite games, right next to Civilization Revolution and Fallout 3. This game offers countless hours of fun whether you are playing by yourself or with friends. The gun selection is absolutely amazing, and the co-op mode works flawlessly. The presentation of the graphics is both unique and fresh. This game also has a very high replayability factor, as there are always better guns to be found and stronger enemies to overcome. Character customization is very impressive, with visual as well as attribute customization. One thing is for sure: to get the most out of this game it should be played cooperatively. Highly recommended.
