Wanted a no-nonsense monochrome laser - low cost of ownership as this is my daughter's college printer. Toner for this unit is readily available and inexpensive - translation - low cost per page. I've got an older model (1709) that I've had for nearly 10 years, and it is still going strong.

I needed a printer for documents that was cheap and reliable, and I got more than that. Definitely going to get one with a scanner/copier for the office soon from Brother.

I bought this printer to replace an older Brother HL-2140 printer that I've been using for several years. Recently that printer began to think it had paper jams (it really didn't) and thus was unreliable. HOWEVER, that was after having printed over 48,000 pages on the printer in it's lifetime, so I got some use out of it.
Having had success with Brother in the past, I went ahead and purchased their new 'bottom of the line' printer. Out of the box it started up and printed just fine. I ran through the starter toner cartridge in just a few minutes (printing about 230 pages). I'm now working on my first replacement cartridge and it's working fine. Speed is appropriate. I submitted a 100-page job of full text and light graphics. The first page completed at the 13 second mark, and the entire job took 3 minutes 47 seconds. That's just over 26 pages per second. No jams. No errors. No misfeeds. No 'static' between the pages. No curling. Just good, quality, consistent printing.
My only 'complaint' about the printer is that it's a bit louder than the older model I just replaced (when printing). Not a deal-breaker, and not a major problem, but just something I noticed.

I needed a warranty repair on a bad USB port. Brother customer service is TERRIBLE! I'll likely throw this machine in the garbage and replace it with an HP. I regret not getting the HP.
