The printer arrived well packed and the machine, as well as the other related contents involved with its operation arrived unharmed.
Setup was easy. The "Inkvestment Tank" is different than other Officejet printer cartridges. This is a liquid-type ink in a cartridge-you receive 4 cartridges and must only shake, about 15 times, the black one before putting them in assigned slots. It takes a little bit more time for the printer to load the respective tanks with the contents.
After that, I loaded the DVD into my desktop's drive and let it essentially install itself so that this computer would talk to the printer. It connected, in my case by Wi-Fi, and effortlessly found the machine. I just let the setup proceed through its numerous steps, even allowing registration of the product. What I love about this case is that Brother will offer support for free for the life of the machine, whereas, HP only allows free support for 1 year after purchase. I hate that because if you are lucky to have your product last more than 1 year there are numerous times when something goes awry and we still need assistance. Does HP not think their product should last more than 1 year?
At any rate, my observations:
1. The 2.7 inch LCD screen is easy to read and follow directions if initiating a transaction through the printer itself.
2. I love that once you have hit print on the computer the turn around time for 1st page printing is fast and that the job is out in no time at all and all of this done quietly.
3. This printer has a slim. low-profile appearance and can easily be tucked away in a bookshelf, freeing up valuable real estate on my desk or other tables or work spaces adjacent to my desk that hold my Fujitsu 7160 scanner and my HP LaserJet printer. My LaserJet is black only print, since I run a CPA office, so this colored Officejet is a great addition to my arsenal of printing tools.
4. Scanning is easy and quick, but it would be unfair to compare it to a dedicated scanner like the Fujitsu 7160 that I mentioned above. However, if you do not have a scanner this is great and easy to use, whether initiating the scan feature from the computer or the printer itself. I believe it is Twain compliant because it brought up the Abby configuration. You can scan to a file, jump drive, email, and numerous other options. It can also be saved in various formats like pdf, jpeg, etc.
This is cloud print ready, able to print with mobile devices, Obviously, at this time I can account for how long the ink will last, the box says a 2 year amount, but I hope that Brother would not make claims that they could not deliver on. Best Buy has advertised on their website the high-yield color replacements, 3033XL priced at $23.49, but the box says the 3033 are good for 3000 pages while the 3035 the higher yield for 5000 pages. .

Ease of Use:
Setup out of the box was easy. It took me about 15 minutes to physically remove the printer from the box, remove the packing tape, and load the ink cartridges. Full setup, however, took me about an hour. This included the physical setup, the quick setup instructions to prepare the printer for use, loading the ink cartridges, priming the internal ink wells, printing tests, configuring the Brother Management software and drivers on my computer, and deploying all the printer firmware and software updates. The printer does have wireless and hard-wired options to connect to your network. I chose to setup the printer on my wireless network. Windows 10 will find the printer on the network and load the appropriate drivers for you. That’s good news if you do not want to deploy Brother’s software. The downside is that you won’t get the nifty ink report that shows a graphic representation of how much ink is left or how many pages are left to print. Brother’s software also allows remote scanning of documents and images as well as control over where the printer can pull images from.
Ink Capacity:
The ink cartridges that ship with this printer are massive! The color cartridges are about three times the size of a standard Brother ink cartridge. The blank in cartridge is twice the size of the color cartridges. The cartridges walls are clear so that you can see the amount of ink left in each cartridge. When I installed the cartridge, the printer went into a three to five-minute transfer of ink from the cartridge to an internal reservoir. The process was quiet. I included a photo one of my old Brother color cartridges next to the new one. Huge difference.
Print Quality Black:
Black print quality is outstanding! I printed several documents. One sided print is fast, clean, and the results are super easy to read. Duplex printing is not as fast. For some reason it takes a moment for the printer to orient the page so that it can pull the page back through the printer to print on the back of the page. The results were still clean. The images, on the other, were a mixed bag. See below.
Print Quality Color:
Color printing seems to be dependent on the quality settings for your print job. As a test, I scanned a high gloss image of an F-22 Raptor promotional poster. I first reprinted the image using “normal” as the print quality. I ended up with what looked the image I scanned printed on graph paper with one inch squares. The lines of each square are bold printed in the color of whatever part of the image it covers. At first, I thought that the printer had an alignment problem. I ran the onboard print and alignment tool. The pattern printed cleanly. Next, I printed the same image at high quality. The image did look better and the strange 1-inch squares were gone. I printed several other images; switching between normal quality and high quality. I did not get the grid pattern with any of my other “normal” quality images. But, I did get some degree of lines in every image.
The colors were good. I never felt that the ink on the page matched the colors of the image I was viewing. Most likely this is a calibration issue between the computer’s screen and the printer. Since I do not need this level of accuracy I chose not to pursue fixing this. I did notice that images were not a crisp and often missed subtle detail. For example, I printed an artist’s rendition of sun rays passing over a belt of colorful gasses somewhere in space. The printed image was missing all the light rays. Additionally, a lot of the detail was not as crisp as the original image. I noticed this on the image of the F-22 Raptors. I also noticed this on a few professional photos I had taken of some plastic models I built. The tight details were lost. I also noticed that areas of high contrast were minimized regardless of the print quality I chose. Finally, I did print a multi-page PDF that contained black text, colored text, and colored images. The black and colored text was sharp and easy to read. The colored images suffered from that line issue I described earlier. Normally, if I’m printing out one of these documents, I am not looking for the highest image details. But, I would like the images to not have strange artifacts in them.
Print Speed:
Print speed for text and images is fast. I had a fix page, single sided document out of the printer in no time. It is also much quieter than my previous Brother Multi-function printer. That is a plus. Color images take a little bit longer but not much longer. Of course, the print speed is tied to the image quality. Normal quality printed faster than high quality images. Duplex printing did take significantly longer. Where a text document took a few seconds, it took a duplex black and white document about 10 to 15 seconds a page. That is because the duplex unit had to take a few seconds to setup the page to return through the printer for the second printing pass. I did not attempt to print color images in duplex mode. I figured that ink saturation would destroy the page like it has on every other ink jet printer I’ve ever used.
Software:
As I mentioned earlier, you do not need the install the brother software on your computer. I have about seven Windows 10 computers on my network and not all of them need the full Brother suite of software installed. Windows 10 does have a driver. Brother does include the address to the software in their quick start guide. I typed the URL into my browser and downloaded the software to my test machine. Installation was easy. The software immediately detected an update for the printer. I allowed the software to download those updates and update the printer. The console does give me an estimate of how many pages of printing I have left for each ink cartridge. It also allows for remote scanning of content as well as remote connectivity to external storage devices. I did remote scan documents and images to my computer. The process was easy. I would like to have seen a preview of my subject before I did a full scan. For example, some scanners will allow you to select the part of the image that is important to you so that the least amount of time is taken to scan the image. Other software packages allowed for rotation of the image. Maybe it is part of this printer’s software package. I was not able to uncover it during my testing.
The software also checks for updates on a regular basis. You can adjust the frequency of the checks. You can also influence how and when the updates are installed. As well as how often the software nags you about the updates. Part of the reason I did not deploy this software to all of my machines was to control which machines could control the updates.
Scan quality:
The scan quality of whatever I scanned looked good. I didn’t notice any artifacts in my images. Colors look good as well. Color and plain text came out clean and ready for me to use however I wanted it.
Scan Speed:
Scan speed at the default of 300 x 300 dpi is fast and mostly quiet. My older Brother multifunction printer could be heard across my house when it scanned anything. This new model is about half as loud. I did perform a 1200 x 1200 dpi test and had to lift the scanner’s lid to see if anything was happening. I ruined the exposure to prove the scanner had not stalled. The scanner was so quiet that I didn’t realize that my image was being scanned. In all fairness, the Brother Software should have told me that the image was scanning and at what percentage of the image was complete. The 1200 x 1200 dpi scan took a full minute. The 300 x 300 took about 8 seconds. The scanner will take additional time as the scan dpi increased between 300 to 1200.
WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor):
The WAF is pretty good. My wife stated that she really liked the color and preferred it over the black Brother multi-function printer that this replaced.
Final thoughts:
This printer is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I cannot give it five stars simply because of the awful image reproduction under normal quality. I am not expecting the amazing image reproduction here. But, the strange lines that are introduced in the image are not acceptable regardless of the image quality settings. The duplex printing and scanning functions are great. The software package seems a bit bloated for what it does but not overly so. And I do like the estimated page counts for each ink tank. I would hope the that software is watching the printing habits and calculating the page counts based on habits and not on some arbitrary ISO or made up marketing standard. Time will tell. They say there are two years of ink in the box. We will see.
Finally, the full color control panel is well setup and the menus are very easy to navigate. The display panel is also on a hinge, so you can see it at multiple angles. I did find this feature useful during setup.
If you are looking for a solid performer for home, school, or a small office then go with this printer. If you need something that will give you rock solid color image printing, then keep shopping around.
I hope you found this review useful.

I found this printer to be a very reliable document printer/scanner. It’s easy to set up, relatively compact, and gives you a way to print and scan from just about any device. Whether the ink lasts for 2 years like the box says only time will tell.
In the box you get the printer, power cord, phone cable, and a set of XL ‘INKvestment’ tanks. I plugged in and setup via the touchscreen, which is small, but very responsive. Getting connected to the network and downloading the latest updates to the printer took about 20 minutes.
On the printer itself you get the basic copy, scan, fax functions, as well as access to several online services like Dropbox and Google Drive so you can scan documents directly there. I hooked up to my Google Drive and it worked as expected.
The printer gives you the option to print in just about every way you can think of. It has built-in WiFi and supports both Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. You can also connect to it via USB and Ethernet, though those ports are curiously hidden deep within the printer under the scanner bed. On the front there is a USB port and an SD card reader for photo printing. You can load multiple paper sizes, but there is only one paper tray unfortunately, so you have to swap out as needed.
I was happy with the printing and scanning results. It prints color and black and white documents quickly and cleanly. I was little disappointed with the photo quality, but a photo printer this is not. Looking at the replacement ink tanks they do seem to run on the expensive side, but if I truly am only replacing this ink every 2 years then it’s a bargain. I installed the software disc onto my PC and there’s a fair amount of it. I don’t really see myself using most of it, but there does seem to be some useful stuff there.
This seems like the ideal printer for a home office. It handles documents like a champ and I haven’t had any issues connecting or printing. It didn't blow my socks off, but it's nice to have a printer you don't have to think about very much.

Great all-in-one printer with lots of ink

Over the past couple decades I have owned a variety of different all-in-one printer/scanner/copiers and from just about every well-known manufacturer. If there's one thing regarding printer/copiers that most people have a complaint about, it's the ink; specifically how much it costs and how often you have to replace it at the outrageous prices. I hear from most people who use one at home that it feels like it's cheaper to buy a whole new machine versus spending the money on ink. Well, it appears Brother has heard those same complaints and made a successful attempt to correct that by bundling a fantastic all-in-one machine with enough ink that you won't have to worry about it for years. They claim that the ink contained in this will last you two years assuming you print, on average, 300 pages per month. We probably print a third of that so I assume this bundle should last me about twice as long. Setup was as expected and fairly simple after installing the four ink cartridges and using the responsive touch screen display. It quickly found my local Wi-Fi and linked it so I could do wireless and cloud printing. Once you download the software on your computer, there may be several updates that will need to be done. There is also some optional software included that could be useful to organize files. The printer is pretty fast for any small business or personal job and documents are very clear. Although this is not advertised as a photo printer, I have printed several glossy photo paper jobs and those look great as well. Wireless scanning was also very fast and clear using the auto-feeder. There is also a built in SD card slot to save files to or print from. You can save shortcut settings via the on board software which could also come in handy for certain jobs. For me, this was everything I could need in a printer/scanner/copier and with this bundle and the latest firmware, Brother has easily earned my business over other manufacturers and I would suggest this to anyone in the market for one.

I use my MFC-J995DW XL for business. When I turn it back on after it's been off I get the "cannot detect" error for the print cartridges. No even if I follow directions to eject and replace. The only solution I've read is to power down, eject carts and purt back in and power back up. RIDICULOUS! Returning ASAP

A Compact Ink Miser

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I am actually reviewing this printer a little early. I guess I ought to come back in a couple of years and see if the ink lasted that long. I'm betting it will, considering my usage. Brother says "up to two years". My experience with Brother inkjets has shown them to be ink misers. This is a primary consideration for me when selecting a printer.
This J995DW is my second Brother MFC to own. The XL designation means it comes with the larger ink cartridges. There is also a model with smaller cartridges that only go for a year. In addtion to printing on 8X10 stock for personal and legal business, I often scan and sometimes print photos, usualy 4X6. I don't fax, so I can't review that function.
When you install the cartidges, the printer goes through a routine to transfer the ink from the cartidge to an internal tank. This is the INKvestment Tank Ink System and is designed to allow more pages of printing while keeping the size of the printer compact. I infer from that description that perhaps the contents of the cartridge may be under pressure. Do follow the installation instructions carefully. You are supposed to shake the black cartridge BEFORE you insert it. I realized I had not shaken it, and got some leakage when I removed it and shook it, becuase inserting the cartridge in the machine appears to pierce its seal, so the tank transfer can be completed.
Print quality on plain injet paper has been great. I am very pleased with the photo printing as well, and, of course, love being able to print directly from my Pixel 2 smartphone, using the either the Brother android utility or NFC. They both worked beautifully. I score the quality of the prints as excellent to my eye. The colors were vivid and not over-saturated. See the attached photo.
Scanning and copying was equally trouble-free. I scanned both to a USB stick and directly to my computer over Wi-Fi. I did have to connect with a USB cable to set up the Wi-Fi, but it has worked flawlessly since, and the printer is available to devices on my home network.
This is an inkjet and not a laser. You'll have to be satisfied with 10-12 pages per minute, depending on whether you are printing in color or blank and white. I did not experience any snags with the automatic feeding of multiple pages.
I wish the printer had more paper capacity. But 125 pages is not an atypical capacity for a printer of this category. Such is one of those design trade-offs. More capacity would make it far less compact, and this MFC is a remarkably petite beauty.
I recommend it highly.

My previous printers have been Epson's and HP's. My last was an HP which I loved, worked great, but then the paper feed gear roller wore down and parts were not available. So checking with IT people I know they highly recommended Brother. The pages print super fast, clear, no paper jams with multiple copies. Ink cartridges are HUGE and should last me a very long time ! Think I was most excited about that !! Price was reasonable, compared with HP printers. Since I just recently bought it, cannot tell you how long it will last, but my fingers are crossed ! I am very satisfied with it. Set up was VERY easy.

The best part about the Brother J995DW is the massive amount of ink it comes with. For my purposes it will probably last me about 15-16 months versus the advertised 2 years worth. I use mine for work and personal printing. Setup was quick and easy and the installation file ran smoothly. Print quality is pretty nice but don't expect the photo prints to be outstanding - I found them a little washed out. But, that's why I use another printer for photo prints. The Brother is little noisier than my other printer but it's also about 50% faster so I don't mind. My other printer was costing me $200 year for ink with my printing habits. I believe this will halve that or more so it will pay for itself in less than 2 years. I also like the larger standard paper tray which I think holds about 150 sheets. I don't like that I have to load that tray with photo paper if I want to print photos. But, that's another reason I kept my other printer for strictly photos or graphics. The Brother is a solid and economical printer for most of my needs.

This printer was a replacement for a printer that my husband purchased (not a Brother) that he purchased for the Bluetooth capability so we wouldn’t have to go upstairs and hook up to the old reliable Brother printer. I figured that since we were exclusively printing with the old Brother printer again, it was time to try again for a printer with Bluetooth capability.
I bought the Brother J995DW XL for the Bluetooth capability and for the same, or better, print quality that our old Brother printer provides.
Well, the setup for the J995 was super easy! It prints beautifully and the color printing is super clear. Two thumbs up!!
The best part is that my husband love it! :-)

I have only had this printer for a week but from what i’ve seen so far, the quality of the prints are great. So far I have only printed out pages in black ink and from the moment I press “print” on my PC to the moment 1 paper is printed out takes about 8 seconds (it is connected through wifi). The printer is also fairly small. The print tray is the only thing that concerns me about this printer, it does feel a little cheap but so far i’ve had no problems with it so it’s not a big problem. Would highly recommend if you do not want to spend a lot on ink but require high work loads for college or personal use.

I am a PhD Student in history, and I HATE reading on screen, so between articles, PDF books, and the mountain of my own writing I have to produce, I print A LOT. I bought this printer 6 months ago, and I have used about 60% of the black cartridge that it came with, even though I've already gone through six full reams of paper. I have yet to have any problem with it, and the quality is superb.
I had an old Brother laserjet in the past, and it lasted me for years. Inkjets like this are making laserjet printers obsolete for most people, and I think Brother has raised the standard for companies like HP and Epson that have been offering high-capacity inkjet printers for some years now. I was originally going to go with an HP Officejet 8000 series (still a good line of printers), but I went with the Brother because it was more compact and would fit in my computer desk's printer compartment. Now that I have it, I think it's better than the HP alternative regardless of the size advantage.
My only complaint (a very minor one) is that the paper tray holds only a measly 150 sheets. I just had to print out a 356 manuscript to copy edit, and I had to reload the tray several times. I would love to see them add a larger paper tray. But most consumer-oriented printers have dinky paper trays, even when they're made to print in high capacity, so you won't find an alternative to this without spending a lot more money and getting a comparatively gargantuan printer.
This machine is worth every penny I paid for it and more.

I've researched so much about getting the best quality printer for my home that can handle arts and crafts and my sticker business and this is one of the best investments I've made in a long time. We had our last printer for over 10 years and it finally quit working. I asked the sales staff what they recommend after explaining we mostly use it for letters and some photos.
The sales staff recommended this printer. The supplied ink was a big selling point. It was easy to hookup and is easy to use. Print quality is good. Photos print a little dark. More then likely it’s an adjustment we need to learn.

I am writing this review two years after purchase.
This printer has been the best printer I have ever purchased.
My wife and I have both been teachers. I worked for OHSU as a Nursing Instructor and my wife an early learning teacher for a private school. We have printed thousands of pages and have not replaced even one ink cartridge.
I printed journal articles, handouts, layouts, proposals, and all with various degree of complexity and color schema. I have found the quality of the print to be excellent. I have not had to replace parts, clean heads, realign the cartridges etc like I have with other printers in the past.
I have moved this printer between various rooms of our house and even into the garage and the WiFi maintains connection.
There have been times of heavy printing that it has jammed but the onscreen directions to clear the jam have gotten us back on the road to printing in no time.
Photo prints: photos are obviously better with high quality paper.

I got tired of feeding $50 into my Canon Pixma 2-3x/year for ink. This printer comes with up to 2 years of ink, which, along with Brother printer reputation, is why I bought it. Super easy setup with my Dell, just followed the instructions. B/W and color prints look great. I've scanned several docs and made a few copies, all of which look as good or better than my Canon. I don't use it for printing pix, so no comment on that function.

This little powerhouse is a great purchase. Brother is not well advertised, but word of mouth should help. The speed, quality, and user interface are top of the line for a home printer. The large tanks for refillable ink, WIFI, mobile printing, and the ability to print two sided with ease sold me. Many options with a comparable price of the rip off big dogs makes this a stable purchase that I can see using for years to come.
