This is our first DSLR. It's working nicely for us. We had 35mm film SLRs ten years ago, and point and shoot digitals since then. It's a great step up from the small cameras in image quality and control options. We got a Canon because we find the interface easier and more intuitive than the equivalent Nikon menus. We tried both brands at our local Best Buy. I was surprised how simple a lot of the advanced features are to use. Camera comes with 114 page manual. The complete manual is 380 pages, readable on computer. The full manual is very easy to follow and hyperlinks carry you direct to each feature. Size is the other major seller. My wife and I have medium to small hands. The SL1 body is easier to hold in one hand for us, and light weight. One minor negative point, there's no external indicator dial showing your focus distance. You can't set focus manually looking at the outside of the camera like you could with an old film 35mm. I think it's fall-out from having the auto focus features and making it so turning the focus dial won't break the camera while you're in auto. It's not a thing except in the black of night setting up for long exposures.

    Excellent DSLR Photo Quality

This is my third camera attempt at buying a camera for the holidays that would deliver astounding photo quality. First was a sony hx300 with 20mp but that delivers poor image. Uploaded photos were grainy and noisy mostly at higher ISO. Video mode is Superb autofocus is precise and fast plus a 50x zoom is fantastic. This camera is more suitable for Video not photos. I had to return it back to the seller on b/c it delivers poor image not worth it. The second camera i bought was samsung WB250 point and shoot. photos were a little better at higher iso. Less grainy but pictures were blurry. Group pictures were out of focus considering little focus points it has. If you were to buy a camera to capture special moments this camera definitely dissapoints. Finally i did some research and found out that the bigger a camera's sensor is the better photo quality it produces. This leads me to APS sensor. These sensor were more affordable than full frame dslr. I had my eye on the nikon d3200 and canon SL1. I read all reviews on BBY and Ebay including amazon. I love the guide features on nikon but i was told that the higher Megapixel the more noise it is. So 18Mp is enough on the Canon. While holding and testing out each camera at local BBY i found that the canon is a great all around camera considering its light and small to carry around. The nikon was small too but its still bulky. So i purchased the canon online which was cheaper. The moment i uploaded pics taken on the canon it was just "WOW". Photos are professional out of the box. Jpegs are clean and clear. No more grainy or blurry photos even with my toddler running around. This was the one i was looking for after two months of reading reviews and mistakes being made. Definitely worth the money. I noticed that higher ISO beyond 6400 had noise but still very acceptable considering its still very detail and vibrant. One thing is the battery life is short. i recommend buying another spare of battery for traveling. The kit lens delivers sharp clean pics and whisper quiet focusing. Although in low light it hunts to find focus including video mode. More focus points would be nice too. When going through the creative scene i dissapointed that it was missing the Candlelight mode. Other canon dslr had that feature and they feature it on the SL1 but this model does not have it what a misleading factor!!!!Overall this camera delivers spectacular image and video quality. Im happy with the buy.

I picked this camera because of its size and weight. It is considerably smaller than most DSLRs and it fits perfectly in my hands. The image quality is excellent as I mostly use this camera for capturing photos of my family, friends, and images for my blog. The touchscreen is awesome, and I find it very easy to navigate through the menus. I would definitely recommend this camera!

I am a casual photographer looking to get more serious. I mainly focus on family portraits and landscapes. This camera has been the perfect solution for my needs. The price for the quality is amazing. Furthermore, its a very compact DSLR, which was key for my needs. I've decided to upgrade the lens, but feel the lens that came with it is of great quality, and a perfect back-up. I highly recommend.

No matter what your photographic experience is, this is a fantastic camera! I love its slightly smaller size and lighter weight. With a straight 50MM lens it is almost pocket sized and will be great for vacation snap shots. But, don't let that fool you it has most all of the features and performance of the larger siblings. Very user friendly and easy to master even for a beginner.

This is a great camera to get started in the world of DSLR photography. It has some nice features for the price, such as a touchscreen which can be handy to quickly change some options without having to click through using the buttons, and it is not too big or heavy. There is good, sharp detail when using the supplied 18-55mm lens and is a great entry level camera for the price.

This is my first DSLR. I went into Best Buy looking for a "beginner" DSLR and originally was thinking of getting a Nikon but the sales person recommended this one and I'm glad he did. I love the auto focus and the fact that you can just tap on the screen to take a picture. It takes crisp pictures almost every time. The only time it has a little difficulty finding the object to focus on is when it's dark or if it is similar colors to the background. I'm slowly learning how to use the manual settings, but it's nice that I can still take great pictures until I do learn. The size of the camera is great. I don't feel like I'm lugging around a huge piece of equipment. I have yet to test the video mode. I do wish it had bluetooth for easy photo sharing, but I can live without it. So far very happy with my purchase.

I am no photo expert by any means but this camera is easy to use and takes awesome pictures. With Best Buys return and exchange policy there is nothing to fear. Battery life is very good and I really like the touch screen display. It also is very easy to download photo from to my imac. There are more expensive models out there but for me this one is perfect.

I purchased this just a few hours ago and with minor research on how DSLR cameras work, I was taking great pictures. This is so easy to use and as many other people stated, it's an excellent first time DSLR user camera.

After doing crazy amount of research which led to no where and going back and forth between Nikkon and Cannon I finally just decided to pick the Cannon SL1. I'm a casual photographer and wanted to shoot my 5 month old son and have a camera I can use for the next 5-7 years. So far I love the camera. It's easy to use and takes great pictures. I love the live view and the fact that I can play with the filters and setting (ISOs) and see it live on the screen. No buyers remorse here.

This camera is great for shooting high quality images as well as HD video. The touch screen interface is awesome once you get used to it (it took me a few hours to get it down). Battery life isn't amazing, however it all depends on how often you use the touch screen to view your pictures and videos. Shooting HD video does drain the battery life, however the sound quality is better than I expected. This is great for my 300 and 400 level media classes. I would recommend this to anyone who wants great DSLR performance in a small, light body.

My daughter bought this camera (she's 14) and loves it, so I got one for myself too. It's easy to figure out and takes fantastic photos. I watched some of the videos on the Cannon website too. I wish I had gotten the telephoto lens too, will get it before our next vacation for sure. Dependable as expected. Just remember NEVER to delete photos right from the camera. Copy them onto your computer, remove the cord, then FORMAT your card to make your card last longer and does not slow down over time.

This camera is the first DLSR I've owned, however it is not the first one I've used. For work I've used a Nikon D70, and a Canon 60D and I enjoyed the quality of the Canon but the size of the Nikon. For my own use I wanted a camera that was lighter, more compact, and full featured. The Canon SL1 was the answer and with the online discount, I couldn't pass it up. Even if you're a pro and you have EOS equipment, this is a must have for a back up.
