Got this workhorse just in time for tax season. It is compact and easy to use. It was very well packaged and arrived in excellent condition. It is my first stand alone scanner. I have an all in one printer-scanner-fax that is super cumbersome to scan documents with. This is dream.
The Pros:
Easy set up
Direct connect
Handles different paper sizes in same scan pile
Single or double sided scans
Necessary cables provided
Reliable
Cons:
No wifi (for me this was not a con, but possibly for some)
Pricy
Set up was a breeze. Intuitively you will be tempted to plug it into your computer first. Don't. You must access the website and download the software first. After that, you are all set to plug and go. There are options for single or double-sided scans, correcting the orientation of the document, and where to save it, etc. The price would easily be worth it for a business setting. You can scan driver's licenses, do double sided scans, no problem. For home use, this is expensive but is super fast in its feed and dependable, so you get what you pay for.
I did scan several things together and one page had a sticky note on it (intentionally). This made the scanner send me an error message thinking it did a double feed. The pages froze and I canceled the scan. Next, I popped open the scanner to easily remove the pages. This showed me jam would be easy to correct, not that I see this thing jamming, it's very intuitive.

The best home scanner I’ve ever used

I’ve used several scanners for my home office. I’ve had portable ones for my laptop, and some good sized all-in-one’s for my desktop. I was very happy for this Canon image FORMULA R40 Office Document Scanner as I needed one with the features that are built in. After a few weeks of using it, here are my thoughts to why I feel this is the best home scanner I’ve ever used:
Set-up: Once you open the box, you are met with a really small device compared to the box. Before powering it on, you are required to download the software from the website. You will have to unzip them so you do need a unzip program on your computer to open these files once downloaded. Attaching the paper tray to the back and plugging it to your computer was too easy.
Speed: The R40 easily scanned 22 pages in seconds and with high quality. These were both B&W and colored pages and saved them in one document. I was thrilled to see how fast it did this project. According to Canon, it can scan 40 pages in a minute and can hold up to 60 pages in the drop tray. My 22 page document had mixed paper weights of 20lb and 24 lb, and it easily fed and scanned them in under 30 seconds.
Image Quality: This is where the R40 really shines. You have several features that really help set up your documents in an orderly and same fashion. As former military, I appreciate things to be dress-right-dress. The R40 allows you to scan all documents in the same upright position. Meaning, if you are scanning several documents, and some of those documents are either upside down or side-ways, when scanned they will all face the same direction. Even documents that are different sizes (i.e. ID cards or credit cards), this will scan them and adjust the direction. Also, it has a feature called “DESKEW” where if a document was fed crooked or if the print was already crooked, then it will correct it when scanned to be straight. Amazing feature! Also it can easily scan double-sided documents at the same time where you don’t have to feed it twice to scan both sides. Also, if scanning a large document that contains blank pages, it will scan and remove the blank pages from the final scan. I think that is absolutely brilliant!
Design: the R40 is an off-white shell with very minimal buttons on the top. You are met at the very top with the power button that glows blue. Directly below that, are the primary buttons you need to scan: Job Select, Start, Stop and DFW.
Overall, this is a great device and easy to use, scans amazing quality and can seamlessly adjust all your scans to face the same direction. Although it does not have wireless ability, it is still a highly able device that just takes seconds to connect to your computer. Again, this is the best home scanner that I’ve used. Highly recommend for any home office.

Fast double-sided scanning

With this Canon R40, you can do more scanning in less time and organize all your documents into digital format, resulting in less stress finding documents. This device makes it extremely easy to convert a lot of documents into high-quality digital format. I removed all protective shipping packaging/tape from the machine and connected the power cord. Next, I went online to download the software from Canon’s website for this specific scanner. I followed the installation wizard, connected the machine to my laptop using the included USB cable, and completed the setup. It took me about 12 minutes. What makes this efficient is the capability of doing double-sided document scans at the same time. It handles very well, mixed-size documents properly without getting paper jammed. All documents get saved to the appropriate digital size; if it is a receipt, it gets saved as a small document size. It rarely happens, but when the document gets scanned twisted, the software programs align it correctly. For personal and businesses, I use an expense management system software to help manage finances, so scanning receipts is my primary use of this scanner. It does an excellent job at different scanning sizes of receipts, and I haven’t experience paper jamming. It does very well handling even thin and light receipts. The receipts get filed as JPG in the appropriate destination. Compared to multi-purpose printers with scanners, the speed of this scanner is impressive even with double-sided scanning. Note that this is not a wireless device and it uses an USB cable (included) to connect to a computer. Overall, the scanning quality is excellent; it is straightforward to use and makes document filing less stressful.

Nice way to get rid of clutter

I am a saver. I have files going back years that I am reluctant to get rid of "just in case". This is a great way to clear out much of that clutter and save things digitally.
The scanner is easy to set up and with the proper program installation, it was up and running quickly.
It scanned double-sided easily but the second side was upside down. I thought the description said that it would correct upside-down pages but this did not. I might be incorrect about that ability.
I have been able to clear out an entire file drawer. Many items just needed one page scanned to give me account information.
It handles a combination of different sizes easily as well. You do need to distinguish between files- if you put a big stack of different papers, it will see it as one file unless you tell it otherwise.
I am getting used to all these aspects of the unit.
I do plan to scan and store things I need to save as I receive them now and no longer hang on to paper copies of all my documents.

Canon - imageFORMULA R40 Office Document Scanner
I always wanted a personal scanner for bills, receipts, business cards among other things that can digitally store on my computer.
The scanner only takes up a square foot of space on my desk.
The setup was very easy. I downloaded the driver onto the computer and then connected the scanner to the computer. The document rolled through the feed with ease and I scanned several different sizes of documents. You can scan one or multiple documents at a time. Once finished scanning the program allows you to choose where it saves them on the computer. The images were sharp and clean. It scans in black and white or color. I scanned pictures and they were very close is sharpness to the original. The time it saves and the assurance of important documents on record makes this a great addition to our home office.

Compact Affordable Desktop Document Scanner

Canon image FORMULA R40 is a great desktop document scanner in a small form factor that doesn’t take much place in the desk and is designed for home or small offices to easily convert paper documents by scanning into a digital format that are quickly searchable.
This document scanner is compatible with both Windows & Mac operating system and has single pass double-sided scanning option with auto document feeder (ADF) of 60 sheets.
Setup is simple. Just connect the USB and hit the scan button and it just starts scanning. Its relatively fast and accurate. It does scan to various formats like pdf, jpg, tiff, bmp, png, pptx and has options to store in folder, send as email, print, drop box, google drive, OneDrive, QuickBooks and sugarsync. It does support most business-oriented scanning like business card, plastic/credit card, post card, receipts, legal/A4 documents. It can scan documents as small as 2 x 2 inches with the maximum of 4000 scans every day.
Scanner is very efficient and fast and scans both side of the document in color at the same time is very impressive with just one touch of a button.
This model needs to be connected by USB and does not support wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity or network connectivity by ethernet which is a drawback if you plan to scan to mobile devices and is not intended for that purposes. You can only use on one machine and is not network compatible
Measures at around 6 pounds its very portable and less space consuming on any desk. Scanner is rated at 40 ppm (pages per minute) for simplex (one sided pages) and at 80 ipm (images per minute) for duplex (2 sided).
Included software helps creating pdf and editing a breeze. You can search the document easily and is quick compared to other machines. Tried scanning few business cards, bunch of letters sized documents, receipts from Costco and various retailers with no issues.
Only con is the lack of wireless or mobile support. If that was included this will be a complete product for any office.
Overall, if you are looking for a dedicated desktop scanner, look no further. This is great for accurate Optical Character Recognition (OCR), accuracy and speed. With various file format option to store this will be a good investment for home or small office. Giving the rating as 4 stars and not 5 stars just for not having the WiFi/ mobile compatibility.

I've bought about 6 of these devices at my work (through various stores) and they worked great for awhile, however over the last 6 or so months (especially on Windows 11 devices) the scanners stop working at all and give us TWAIN driver errors. We then have to restart windows image acquisition service to get it working, but it's a constant annoyance for my users and me.
I've called Canon about the issue several times and they simply point the finger at microsoft and say that all of their fixes are temporary or iffy, kind of like what I'm already doing.
I don't buy that this is purely a microsoft issue as I don't think it's affecting all scanners. I guess we'll be spending $2000 on a new set...

Opening and setting up the R40 sheet-fed scanner was simple and I had it up and scanning in about 10 minutes. In the box was the scanner, power supply, USB B cable and top mounted sheet holder which just needed to be slid in place. There were a couple of pieces of tape and a piece of plastic inside the scanner that needed to be removed. Everything that needed to be removed was orange and easy to locate as well as pointed out in the Setup Guide.
Downloading the Windows driver according to the included instructions was interesting for two reasons. First, the web address was not something simple like setup.canon.com and second it was a .zip file rather than an executable file which I thought was a bit unusual, especially for some home users who might not be savvy enough to know to extract and run it. If you use the Canon website and search support for the model, it is an executable file.
Using the scanner is fairly straightforward, stack your pages in the top and push the start button. The software loads and the scanning begins. There is an ultrasonic feature that detects when multiple pages feed and it works great. The instructions indicate that you shouldn't scan pages that have been folded and I can attest to this. Multiple times I had pile ups and paper jams due to the folds curling up in the catch bin while scanning old bills and statements. I don't know about you but all my bills come folded. This is easily rectified by removing the sheets from the tray as they come out. Another issue I had which is not the scanner’s fault but pages that had previously been stapled often double fed. This was easily fixed by scanning them upside down then rotating them in the software.
20 double-sided pages via One Touch Scan and CardIris Pro at 200 dpi took 40 seconds. The software did take another several minutes to complete the processing of the documents but it did do OCR and save them as a PDF in the process. Higher dpi settings result in slower scan times ie. 300 dpi took just over a minute for the same documents. Also, using the ReadIris, it did not automatically discard blank pages like the One Touch Scan however, you can select this option once the pages are scanned. ReadIris did compress the PDF to a smaller size than if scanning directly through Adobe Acrobat. On the downside, I did experience several crashes with the ReadIris program where it crashed while processing documents, especially in larger files.
There are a ton of settings to set up your scan jobs and create one-touch processes on both the ReadIris and Canon One Touch Scan programs. I was able to scan and discard over a 1000 pages of old material in just a few hours.
I really like the imageFORMULA R40 scanner for home or small office use and think it's priced accordingly. It is much faster than the SnapScan it replaces but I like the SnapScan software a bit better.
I gave four stars due to the software link and paper catch tray. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

This thing is amazing to scan docs.
You can run a whole batch super quickly
I haven’t had any jams in the feed but also I’m a regular residential user and not a business
I scanned some important receipts and uploaded so I wouldn’t worry if the paper hard copy was thrown out or destroyed.
Also scanned my tax returns if you ever purchased a home or done a refi they’ll asks for these docs over and over

I got this scanner to help me organize medical records. I have been able to digitize all of our bills from physicians, clinics and hospitals as well as EOBs from our insurance carrier. These days all of the physicians seem to work in giant partnerships either in conjunction with or as employees of hospitals. All of the bills come on the same or similar letterhead instead of from the person who actually performed the service. Scanning the bills lets me file them under the relevant provider/procedure etc. This scanner is rated to scan 40 single sided pages per minute and 80 duplex. If a scan is skewed it can be corrected with software instead of having to rescan. This scanner has no problems with a stack of different sized documents or plastic ID-like items. I have had no misfeeds while using this scanner, when it detects taking 2 documents in it stops and warns you. I have had none of the feeding issues with this scanner that I have had scanning with my all in one printer/scanners. The scanner is simple to set up. There is a great app plus Readris PDF software and Cardris business card software. I'm nearly finished with my medical records and ready to tackle banking records next.

Solid performer, good stand alone scanner

I have a long time obsession with office supplies. Maybe that makes me weird, I don’t know, but I’ve grown to accept it.
Stand alone scanners are far from what I would consider a “necessary” office supply, but I often find that stand alone devices do far better at a single task than any all-in-one device does at its collection of tasks. A couple of years ago I bought an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, something on the low end of business grade, and have been largely satisfied with it—with the exception of scanning which is slow, and relies on a less than quality-built feeder.
Enter the Canon imageFORMULA R40 Office Document Scanner. Yes, it’s a separate device that I need to find office space for. Yes, it only does one thing. Yes, it’s as expensive as my all-in-one was. But the one thing that it does, it does extremely well.
Among its top features is simultaneous front-and-back scanning, and when combined with the software which can automatically detect and remove blank pages, makes for a delightfully rapid workflow. The scanner also handles multiple document sizes without any issue.
If the solution falls short anywhere (and this is a stretch), it is in the software. The front-end interface appears outdated and a bit clunky, and while it works well—and reliably—it’s not all that attractive.
The software is still fully capable of intense customization. Multiple on-device presets can be programmed to choose between simplex and duplex, scan destination, scan resolution, and more. The software can also be configured to scan to cloud storage or to email, but this is done via local applications or drives only. For me, with document storage in SharePoint online, the workflow still requires one extra step.
All that said, it’s a solid product—it does its job quickly and accurately. I’ve had no jams or software issues, aside from those mentioned above (which are more complaints than they are issues). Because the device connects via USB only, it is easy to manage and use—but also has limited capabilities when it comes to network connectivity. The price tag is $300 which seems steep, but in terms of allowing you to go “paperless” and organize home or small business documents in a digital platform, it’s well worth the price.

In my efforts to convert the contents of my filing cabinets to digital form, the R40 seemed to fit the bill. Does it?
So, i've decided to go paperless. I initially started this project using my "3 in 1" printer/scanner. It took a while as I had to scan in the front and back of each document, convert them to pdf, join them, and then save them again. This was going to take a while. In comes the R40.
The beauty of the R40 is in its simplicity. Simply plug it into you PC via USB, install the included software, and you are ready to go!
A definite plus for me is that it scans both sides of the document at the same time, in color. In-One-Single-Pass!
Not only was I feeding the R40 standard letter size documents, but also receipts and ledger sheets.
The R40 scanned them all in perfectly! Not only that but converted them into searchable (OCR) pdf docs!
Now I am not dreading this giant project of mine. Oddly enough, I would say that seeing how many documents I can do in one session has become "fun". The included literature says it can scan up to 40 pages a minute - I would say that is pretty darned accurate (finally!).
And with the 60 sheet feeder, it makes it easy to do bulk batch runs.
If you are, like me, trying to reduce the paper clutter in your office, don't think (like I did) that using your flatbed, or printer scanner will get the job done. I mean it will, but it will take you a longgggggg time!
The R40 is what you need. It's what I needed!

Fast and affordable desktop scanner

The Cannon R40 scanner is a stand alone desktop scanner. It is compact and fits nicely on your desk without taking up too much room. This scanner is fast at 30 ppm. It can scan both sides at that speed making it effectively 60 ppm.
Connectivity is USB 2.0. only. if you have a newer mac you may need an adapter.
The bundled software includes a TWAIN Driver, Canon CaptureOnTouch for both Windows and Mac. In addition Readiris PDF Software and Cardiris business card software is included for Windows only. The CannonOnTough has a dizzing array of options including auto color, auto page size, deskew, auto rotation, charater empasis and background smoothing. The scanner can aslo detect the best resolution, enhance color skip blank pages, reduce Moiré, fill irregular edges and holes. There is even ultrasonic double feed detection. The more options you enable the slower the scan. If you have a fast CPU this is much less noticable. The Twain driver allow you to use many third party scanning solutions. The driver supports Windows 7 SP1 or later (32bit/64bit), Windows 8.1 (32bit/64bit), Windows 10 (32/64-bit), MacOS 10.12, MacOS 10.13, MacOS 10.14 and MacOS 10.15
My impression is this scanner is fast and the software comprehensive. The software has a lot of functions but is not very intuitive. I was quickly able to turn a large stack of papers that had been sitting on my desk for about a year into searchable PDF documents. I had no jams at all and the text was enhanced and pages rotated. The software allows direct storage to cloud services like google drive or your local drive. This is a great scanner at an affordable price.

Stop using the scanner on your printer! Scanning on this Canon is simple and very useful. You can scan in a bunch of different format including the two most popular which are JPEG and PDF. You can choose the resolution and speed for quick tasks or stacks of paper. With the simple press of a button you can scan stacks of documents into a single file or break them up into multiple files. Installation and set up was easy and my only issue is that this scanner is really big and the top feeder doesn't fold. Other than that it is a great desk scanner that gets the job done and I haven't had it jam once.

The scanner has a very small desktop footprint but performs like a full function scanner with fantastic OS software included. The scanner is a bit costly but is well worth it.
The build quality is very very good like many of my other Canon products. Setup was a breeze and never once lost connection.
The sheet feeder never jammed even when I scanned 36 double side documents. Scanning speed is exemplary as is the speed of processing your scanned documents.
Love the scanner software, scanning and processing speed as well the compact size.
