Steven spielberg makes some hi quality masterpieces. This classic film is timeless. A movie the family can enjoy!

4K HDR transfer is great. Dolby Atmos is stunning.

It's a great addition to someone's collection who is a fan of such sci-fi or Steven Spielberg's movies. It's a classic and has a very special place in my heart. I was very excited to finally have my own copy in 4K. Top quality production, looks and sounds great on my 4K home entertainment system and includes three different versions of the movie on top of a number of other extras. Definitely worth it! The reason I gave it a 4-star rating is because, as you can see from the picture on the DVD cover, it clearly says 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and Digital copy. Problem is, there's no digital copy so I can't save it online. If you want to see the movie, you must put the disk in the player and that's a shame. I almost wanted to return it for false advertising but the movie itself is a classic and it looks just amazing on my system so I decided to keep it as it is. I'd recommend the product as long as the buyer realizes there's no digital copy to redeem. I'd be glad if someone showed me somehow I am wrong about the digital copy.

Along with ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and later Star Man, & Cocoon, this is among the iconic sci-fi movies of the 1970s and 1980s. How can you not have a copy? Here's to the original drones visiting our night skies!

I was very impressed with this 4K version of such an old movie. 4K can only do so much with the movie that in my opinion was filmed to be slightly grainy in some scenes...in addition to being several decades old. That being said, the extra clarity of 4K as well as impressive colors and deeper blacks in several scenes were impressive. But the most impressive part of this package has to be the audio. I have a higher end sound system but I have learned that audio is really only as good as the source material, regardless of the hardware. There are several scenes in this movie that almost cracked my walls lol. The scene where Richard Dreyfus is sitting in his pickup by the railroad crossing and the UFO descends behind him is audio magic. I turn my 3.1 sound system (15" sub) up to about 3/4 max and the bass punches me in the gut and threatens to things off the walls upstairs (my theatre is in my basement). I also think the light-up packaging with the infamous tune that plays when pressing the button is kind of cool. All of this at a fantastic sale price makes me highly recommend this package to anyone who is a fan of this classic.

I've owned this movie across so many different video formats. But I was able to catch the re-release of it at a local AMC movie theater. Had never seen it in a theater when it was originally released, so it was quite a treat. Other than watching the 4k version on a decidely less impressive sized screen at home, I can say that it looked & sounded as good as it did back in 2017 at that AMC theater. If you own old versions & you have a 4k TV & 4k Blu-ray player, do yourself a favor & pick this one up.

This dvd replaced an older one . Enjoy this movie.

A great sci fi movie gets a great 4K transfer. And with all 3 cuts included, it's every collector's dream

This is one of my favorite films of all time. I have the Anniversary edition on BluRay, it has all three films as does this 4K version. The 4K version has a slight edge over the BluRay version because of the color saturation, but that’s as far as the advantage goes. The film is fantastic but there are scenes that the focus isn’t great and the aspect ratio really gives the edges of the movie a weird curved effect that was probably due to the lens on the camera. The 4K version seems to make this a little overstated since we are getting more resolution to see it with. The reason I am only giving the 4K version a slight edge over BluRay is because the film grain is so much a part of the look of this movie that the enhanced resolution doesn’t do that much to improve picture quality. I will admit the HDR offered on the 4K version is what makes this movie as good as it’s ever going to get. As of writing this review I’ve had the disc for about three weeks and had attempted to get the digital copies of the film since day one. I had put in the code like I have done on all my films and I was pleased to see the three versions of the film would be downloaded, but when I finished the process it only gave me the Director’s Cut of the film. I checked to see if there was a menu when you open the film to pick which movie to watch but that isn’t the case. The Movies Anywhere and VUDU sites showed all three versions of the film and they only gave me access to one. I have put in a ticket to see if I can get this resolved but so far it’s been escalated twice by VUDU, but no correction yet. So, if you have the BluRay version of the film that had been remastered and offers all three versions of the film, I don’t recommend spending the money on this 4K BluRay. However, if you don’t already have it, the HDR give a definite edge and is worth the slightly higher cost to get 4K version if you are deciding between 4K or BluRay.

Classic movie and no one is better than Richard Dreyfuss

One of the best movies of all time! This means something.

Considered “slow” by today’s standard according to my kids. Impeccably directed by the great Steven Spielberg. Beautifully scored. Wonderfully acted. What more could you ask for?

I don't believe this movie will ever look better than it does now. An absolutely beautiful video and audio presentation. If you've never seen it this is the way to do so.

This movie is a must have for every collection. If you're a sci fi fan or just a fan of classic cinematography this movie needs to be in your collection

Good value. Five stars may be from my bias for the movie, but still great. This disc containers three different versions of the movie. Best sci-fi movie ever.

Spielberg's "Close Encounters" suggests that Earth's human race is firmly prepared to become members of the community of the Universe.

This is a beautiful film about discovery and human emotion. High recommend it and a great film for the whole family.

The visual effects are still stunning, the performances from Richard Dreyfuss and Melinda Dillon are still great, John Williams' score is still beautiful, Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography is still top-notch, it's still overall a one-of-a-kind experience. This 40th Anniversary release does include all 3 versions of the film (both on disc as well as with its Digital Copy code) along with 2 great new featurettes: a retrospective featuring interviews with J.J. Abrams and Denis Villeneuve and a look at Spielberg's home movies that he made during production. If only I could afford a 4K player because I can only imagine how stunning it must look in 4K Ultra HD, but as it stands, this is a great release and if you don't have the film in your collection already, this is a must-own!

A classic sci-fi told during Spielberg's "adult" phase of movie making. Wonderfully restored and presented in 4K UHD!

This is an excellent set for this film. Three different versions and lots of bonus features. Well worth the price!
