Definitely an Improvement Over What I Had(Apex)

Better reception of channels and less pixelating (if that's a word) and "dropped" signal than the Apex model. Was informed by other BB reviews of the limited range of remote-and it's true. 'Had to run Channel Scan more than once to get available ones; I still can't pick up certain ones, even with an attached indoor antenna. 'Wish I had done the research at first in '09 instead of just grabbing what was available then. Had to order online and have it shipped to my local BB, but worth it.

Forget the Remote Control

This unit receives many stations and has a very good picture. One MAJOR flaw. Remote control is worse I have ever used. Even living in close quarters in a RV, the remote does not work consistently unless you are within 3-4 ft of converter box. I changed batteries twice with same results. What does one use the most when watching TV? It's the remote control.
I have just read the reviews and most say the same thing. Great converter but lousy remote. Will probably bring it back this week. If you watch TV more than 3 ft away, you do not want this converter.

I bought this DC a month ago and still have no real problems so far. The only very minor annoyance is that the remote control loses signal to the unit if the viewer is sitting more than 8 feet away, so it may be not ideal to install on a TV in a large living room. On the plus side the unit has rubber feet that hold it firmly on the top of the TV, unlike the older unit in my room. Overall a very good unit and price for free TV.

I got this box sometime in early December 2009, after having realized that instead of paying $14/month for basic-basic cable (basic cable = local channels plus a few others), I should just get a DTV Box! The channel clarity would be just as good! D'UH! Didn't think of that until the Government grant expired. Blah!
Anyway, so I hook it up to my set of rabbit ears. Works good. But now I have 3 remotes I need to deal with: TV, DTV box, and DVD/VCR player. Ah great, none of which can be programmed to control the others. My aunt has a DTV controller that was able to be programmed to control her TV as well. This Coby box does not have this feature, and that's the main gripe I have about it. Also, no volume control, like they do on some other external component boxes (ie. DVD players, etc).
Anyway, this box does what it's supposed to do - convert analog reception to digital.
I tried to use it on my Comcast cable wire, but didn't work. I've heard that some DTV converter boxes can convert Comcast/cable signals to get the "in-between" channels... not so with this box.
at $40, it's about right (at least around the time of my purchase).

The converter box set up in no time and it's easy to use. The only thing I don't like is the remote control, sometimes in order for the remote to work you have to be right in front of the box. I haven't been able to program my other remotes to work with this converter box. I'll keep looking for a universal maybe that will help.

Overall a good unit

Overall the Coby ATSC Standard-Definition Converter Box is a feature rich unit. The remote is well-designed and feels good in hand. Unfortunately the infra-red part of the unit which communicates with the box is weak and one cannot be more than 10 feet away for the box to respond to commands.

From the time I received the unit tell I had a viewable picture on the tv was about 45mins.The first time I did an auto scan the unit only picked up 36 chs. After making some minor adjustments to the antenna and the tv setup it picked up 72 chs.The picture quality is very good. The remote is not the best but does funtion by making slight changes in the direction your pointing.I don't think you will find a better unit for the price.

I bought this first because it was $10 cheaper then the others. The remote does not work well and it's very frustrating. I put this one on my bedroom T.V. and a more expensive one from another retailer on my living room T.V. The more expensive one is further from the antenna and gets one more channel. I would recommend spending the extra $10 for a different one.

good converter except for remote range? wait 3 months for labor warranty to expire. then find IR window just to the left of ch. buttons. carefully use just the very tip of ex-acto knife and cut out cloudy thin plastic window covering ir sensor. this will extend remote range 2-3 times distance.

The TV has a perfect picture and there is not a signal problem since attaching the Coby converter box.

Easy to hook up. Did its job right away. However, remote to tv is no longer use because tv needs to stay on channel 3 or 4. Coby has its own very cheap remote that does not perform well. At times one must push the channel one wants three four times before it will change channels and then at times it will enter 5 fives with one push!!!!!!!!!! Really frustrating!!!!!!!!!!

The installation is easy. The remote is inconsistent as noted in other reviews. Since I refuse to pay for TV anymore this is a worthy investment. If you are one that does not require 100's of channels, this converter is worth it.

Bought it for my mother who's on a fixed income. I didn't realize that I needed a high def antenna, pretty obvious thing to not realize but still. It picked up about 30 channels (Chicagoland) with a standard antenna but doubled and increased in quality after upgrading to the high def antenna. All in all, it was around $100 to not have to pay another cable bill...I'm considering dropping my service and then using the net to watch most of my programs. Anyways, i didn't read the directions at first and was disappointed when it only found 1 or 2 channels. Remember to go into the menu and run an automated scan.
Other than that, works great.

Nice and easy to install. No problems what so ever. It does help to get a good TV Antenna though. This device does not help with the TV reception.

I bought two of these units and the remote controls don't work well with either one.
I thought it was the remotes themselves, but I purchased a universal-programmable remote and it won't even change the channels half of the time.

Probably, many people are not sure if this converter comes with a remote since the description doesn't say anything about it. But it DOES come with a remote and 2AAA batteries.

Junk

I will preface this by saying that every single different brand of these converter boxes I've owned has done the same thing. So I think this is not something specific to this particular one. It worked great when we first got it. Within a week, it stopped working. We had to buy it online, because the stores won't carry them. I think they make them all hard to get and then break quickly so that we will just buy a new TV. It worked on me this time. I decided that the $200 we've spent on these since the switch has been completely wasted, and why waste more. So we bought an Insignia 32' LCD 1080i for $399 from Best Buy. LOVE IT!! Skip this piece of junk and just buy a new tv.
