First and foremost, I bought it while it was on sale. The 500GB on my laptop wasn’t treating me well since it on a constant loop of uninstalling other games for storage or to play a new games. Overall I’m satisfied with my purchase.

Great Storage for a fair price

Every PC user is in need of storage and I am no exception. As seen in the photo posted below I have went and upgraded my older MX100 series Crucial SSD with the MX500. SO let's jump into my experience. I am running Windows 10 and my current PC has some decent specs I am running an 8th generation i7-8700, 32GB ram, RTX 2080 and I have a crucial NVMe boot drive and I had the MX1000 as a backup drive for my boot drive and the MX500 replaced that drive. I already had Acronis software from the older drive (my MX100) which allowed me to simply clone the newer drive and it was a simple process once you know how to. I use crucial storage executive software to monitor my drive health and update the SSD firmware when necessary. This isn't my typical type of review because this SSD isn't the typical product that you can review and say good and bad and whatnot you need to spend months up to a year to be able to properly review a device like an SSD or Hard Drive. That being said this hard drive does run at the advertised speeds and going by my previous experience with the brand I have had extraordinary luck and have not experienced a single drive failure or problem. I currently own 5 Crucial brand storage devices all SSD drives. Those who are new to the SSD scene then welcome Crucial is one of the big players and you can't go wrong with this brand. Upgrading from a basic 5400rpm hard drive or something similar can make your computer a little faster depending on what kind of hardware you have. If you have fairly modern hardware and need more storage then this is a good suggestion as well. Like I said earlier you can never have enough storage space. To summarize my review I already have a pretty top notch computer I just needed to upgrade my storage and I did just that now I can have no worries when it comes to backing up my windows installation. So If you are looking for extra storage consider a Crucial drive they are usually comparable to other brands and give you the best bang for your buck whether that be NVMe storage or M.2 Sata SSD Crucial has a lot to offer which is why I choose to stick with them.

MAJOR PROBLEM: Crucial currently has a serious mfg. error causing major problems for us: The User! They purposely send out new MX500 1 TB SSD SATA Drives with the same corrupt internal file. Read the report: I have bought 13 of these drives and have returned them back! However, 'I believe they are re-packaged and are fraudulent in their 'quality Control. Refund Time.

    Defective replacement&initial purchase missing 70G

My first drive was missing 69 gigs. I returned it which they first asked me to come in person (1 hour plus commute each way) to do even though I bought via delivery online. They then changed to sending me a label to return and shipping the replacement to me, where it kept saying delivered on both the Fedex website and the Best Buy website using the tracking number (the BestBuy staff I spoke with told me he couldn’t see the “delivered” status and that I was wrong, but I have photos of the literal Fedex website and the texts from fedex). After I put in a case request, the status kept changing and resetting to say “delayed” or “pending” after sending me a notification it was delivered (it wasn’t). Then it finally got here 3 days late with no notice. I installed the new drive and guess what? It’s ALSO missing 69 gigs. This is ridiculous. I needed the drive for work. I shouldn’t pay for 1 TB and get 70 gigs less than that. The photos have exactly the same space but they are taken on different drives. First is from 3/25 initial purchase second is from 4/2 replacement. This has been a headache. Save your money and peace of mind.

I wanted to upgrade the 2.5” Toshiba spindle drive in my laptop that is used as the data drive and got this Crucial MX500 to take its place. The drive comes well packaged like pretty much all their drives do and the box had an extra spacer inside if you needed to take up some room in your drive bay to make it more secure. My laptop didn’t require this but some makes/models may and it’s nice they included it. There weren’t any drive screws included, but the screws from the old drive worked perfectly. Installation was simple enough, the same as any other internal SATA drive. There are threaded holes on the bottom and sides to make it universally mountable. The drive itself is very light, a big difference over the Toshiba 2.5” it’s replacing. After installing and transferring data over I ran Crystal Disk Mark on the Crucial “and the Toshiba before removal” and there’s a huge difference in speed, see pictures for all the speed tests. I also compared it to a WD Blue 3.5” 5400rpm drive that’s in my desktop and this MX500 pretty much wiped the floor with both of them. The WD Blue only kept up with the Crucial during the 64MiB testing, any size larger the Blue just couldn’t keep up. Heat was never an issue and after running all the benchmarks which stressed the drive pretty thoroughly the temps never got above 39C “102.2F” which is good for a laptop that’s not that well ventilated. If you are looking to upgrade your old spindle drive or just want a larger SSD for storage the Crucial MX500 line is going to be a great pick. If your old device is booting off a spindle drive you’ll see a huge improvement in boot times. As my laptops all have MSATA drives as their boot devices so I’ll be using this as data storage. I’ve used Crucial drives since the first SSDs hit the market and they’ve never given me any problems. The biggest difference over the years is just how much the price per MB these have dropped to and the MX500 is a great blend of value and performance.

How do I trust if the unit has the stated number of read and write life if it’s repackaged and resold by BestBuy? I’m not opening it to ridicule the manufacturer for distributing used item, what if it was going to be a gift item, embarrassing!

Quick SATA SSD at a good price

Bottom line: This is a great little SATA SSD. I'd recommend it without hesitation. While not as fast as a PCIe SSD would be, it is still plenty fast for all but the most demanding 4K video workloads (if you're inclined to use it for encoding video - see attached image). If you need a less expensive alternative to a PCIe/M.2 drive to add 1TB of zippy storage to your PC or Mac, this drive is a good buy. I've put mine in a USB-C external enclosure so I can move files quickly between my Mac and iPad and it's been a workhorse so far. A nice touch: It comes with a self-adhesive plastic spacer. This simple addition makes for a much better fit inside the enclosure: nothing rattling around.
