The Ultimate Backup Solution for Mobile Devices

What a great and convenient little device the Crucial X6 SE 2TB turned out to be! I was able to seamlessly integrate it with my old Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, format the drive, and run a full backup using Smart Switch. The process was smooth and efficient, allowing me to safeguard all my data effortlessly. When I upgraded to a new S24 Ultra, the Crucial X6 SE made the transition a breeze. I simply plugged it in, and within moments, all my data, pictures, and important files were backed up and ready to go. The convenience and reliability of this device are truly impressive. Beyond just backing up my phone data, the Crucial X6 SE excels at storing large video files and pictures, freeing up precious space on my mobile device. This capability is especially important to me, as recently I’ve been capturing several high-quality videos of volleyball games, which often exceed 20GB. Unlike cloud storage, which can take days to upload such large files, the Crucial X6 SE handles it in mere seconds. For anyone needing a fast, reliable, and portable storage solution, I highly recommend the Crucial X6 SE 2TB. It’s incredibly efficient and has significantly simplified my data management and backup process & it's FAST...!!

This little SSD is fast, even for a "lower" end model. Crucial makes faster models, but my usage doesn't require the fastest available. It was a toss up between this and a regular external hard drive. I've dropped the standard external laptop drive before from a distance of about a foot onto hardwood floors and completely ruined it (getting the eternal clicking sound). Nice that this is solid state and I don't have to worry about that. I see some older reviews with buffer/writing problems, they must have updated these to include some RAM cache as I copied dozens of large files (over 10GB each) with no slow downs. Usually the cheaper drives have no cache or very little and you see the speed drop early on around 1Gb as it's full and can't catch up. This one keeps on going and I'd love to see what the faster models could produce. I've added a picture showing the copying of around 100Gb of files, with many .iso's of 20Gb each (or more), and it's 43% into it and not slowing down. Very small, easy to put in your pocket. Smaller than the Sandisk extreme of same capacity. Gets a little warm when copying, but doesn't get hot. Drive is currently formatted MBR/NTFS to be compatible with a few devices.

This Crucial X6 SE 2TB SSD is ridiculously tiny—like, fits-between-my-fingertips tiny—and weighs next to nothing, making it a breeze to toss in my bag. I’ve been using it to store a chunk of my photo library and some hefty video files, and it’s got space to spare with 2TB. The 800 MB/s read speed feels snappy for transfers, though it slows a bit on big writes—still faster than my old hard drive! It comes with both USB-C and USB-A cables, so it plays nice with my laptop and older desktop. No bells or whistles like encryption, but for a lightweight, no-fuss storage fix, it’s pretty cool. Perfect for hauling around without even noticing it’s there.

There are faster drives out there, and higher-capacity, too. This Crucial X6 2TB, however, is both reasonably-priced and rock-solid reliable. I've had it now for 2-1/2 years. I bought it because the internal drive on my Mac Mini was too small, so the Crucial is full of critical data that's accessed constantly. I'm purchasing another 2TB Crucial today to use as my Time Machine drive, since the WD Passport I was using has crapped out. I've never experienced a glitch of any kind on the Crucial. I plugged it in. It worked. That's how things are supposed to be.

I like Crucial, and this is a good option for the price when it's on sale. I'm using this as an archive drive, so I'm more interested in reliability than speed. And this is not that speedy (I'll leave it to Google to explain why). Unlike others, I haven't noticed any overheating issues. As someone else mentioned, the Crucial Storage Executive doesn't recognize the X6 though Crucial support says they're working on it. For now you can access the SMART attributes through third-party apps. The USB cable could be a little longer, but they now include a USB Type-A adapter in the box.

For anyone who reads this- if you need external backup media and move it at all- even just from home to school or work- Buy this or another external SSD. External HDDs are EXTREMELY fragile(Even the LaCie ones!) and if you drop them even just 30-45cm, you are almost guaranteed to lose your entire drive and the data on it. Data recovery for physical drive damage(drops result in G-shocks of up to 450G's on impact, inertia will slam the mechanical components together) starts at around $1,100. Meanwhile an external SSD can be dropped from the top of the Empire State Building and be totally fine! On top of that, HDD'S transfer speeds MAX out at about 250-325 Mb/s while even this 'budget' external SSD has 800Mb/s transfer speeds.

    Great drive recommendation from GeekSquad

I went in to see The Geek Squad regarding an issue with my previous external drive and wasn't sure if it was my computer or the drive. Well the knowledge of the representative that helped me advised that is was most likely the external hard drive and the type that I kept buying. I was getting HDD and these are fragile and have moving components inside that kept failing, causingme to looseall of my footage. I was recommended to get SSD and this was the best decision. It was super easy to install, computer recognized hardware soon as it was plugged in. This is a Great drive and I have not had any more problems! A little on the expensive side but well worth the money. I am a content creator and j need all of my footage backed up and saved!!

Fairly easy to use, and it is extremely compatible with my sims games (mods, cc, etc)! And it runs smoothly and my game opens up without any delays. the first time I opened up the game, it took a couple of seconds extra to load the game in, but literally after that, it's been loading just fine (honestly even better than before).

I really like Crucial, especially when it's on sale. Using this as an archive drive, reliability is key for me over speed. It's not the fastest (Google can explain why), but no overheating issues. Crucial Storage Executive doesn't recognize the X6 yet, but they're working on it. For now, third-party apps access SMART attributes. Wish the USB cable was longer, but the inclusion of a USB Type-A adapter is a plus. Considering upgrading to the newer version for speed in 2023 or 2024.

It's actually shocking how small this thing is, considering the price, you would be picturing something a bit more clunky and less elegant. But it really does look sleek, came properly formatted, and works exactly as you'd expect a portable external hard-drive to.

Format SSD before use on a Windows system!

This review is based upon my use on a Windows 10 64-bit system. I noticed any time I would open any disk utilities like Defraggler & MiniTool Partition Wizard 12 I would experience application hangs. Some other weirdness I've found is the Crucial Storage Executive won't recognize my X6. I thought maybe a firmware update would help, so I installed the Crucial Storage Executive application. I could not get it to see the X6. The S.M.A.R.T data from Defraggler shows a lot of Power-on Hours, Power Cycles, and Program Fails. MY total Power on hours is < 9. Because of my problems I decided to reformat the drive. Reading reviews I noticed people said to format first to achieve full speed. I also read one review where someone else had hangs. I'm using this as a write-once backup drive. My write speed before formatting averaged 85 MB/s, 115 MB/s after formatting. So, formatting did make a difference. Copying 415 GB to drive before formatting took about about 1 hour 45 minutes. After format, about 1 hour. I also no longer experience any hangs on the usual programs. Crucial Storage Executive still does not see the X6. Regarding firmware versions, the Crucial website shows latest firmware is UHFF11 my drive has UHFF31. With all of that said, I'm relatively happy with the drive. I'm plugged into a USB 3.0 port and the limiting factor is probably the SATA3 spinning HD the data is being copied from, AND my older hardware (don't have USB C ports).

No IP rating + thermal throttling issue

The Crucial - X6 SE 2TB SSD provides a decent amount of portable storage at a relatively low cost. However, the drive apparently has no Ingress Protection rating (IP code) and suffers from significant thermal throttling during write operations. [ Performance ] I tested this drive connected to my computer’s USB 3.2 Gen 2 type C port using the included USB-C cable, having quick-formatted the drive to NTFS as per manufacturer’s recommendation for best performance. This is the same computer on which I’ve benchmarked other NVMe SSDs having much higher read and write speeds, so the only performance bottleneck would be with the drive itself (and/or possibly the included USB cable). To help ‘break in’ the drive, I first recorded about 2 hours of nearly continuous raw video at ~40MB/s, equating to hundreds of gigabytes of sequential writes. On reviewing the recorded video, I didn’t notice any hiccups, though this bitrate wasn’t expected to be thermally taxing. After plenty of cooldown time, I used CrystalDiskMark to run benchmarks, where I achieved a maximum read speed of 568.16 MB/s (above the advertised maximum) and write speed of 382.66 MB/s in the SEQ1M Q8T1 test. For a longer-duration real-world test, I copied a 100 GB file containing completely random (incompressible) data to this drive from another SSD drive, and ran into the thermal throttling shown in the attached screenshot. The drive would ride a consistent wave reaching ~295 MB/s peaks and ~44 MB/s troughs. This is no doubt the reason why Crucial doesn’t bother advertising a write speed for this drive. [ Design ] The external design is small, sleek, and well suited for easy pocketing. The apparent lack of an Ingress Protection rating (IP code) doesn’t grant confidence that this drive would stand up well to environmental hazards such as a spilled drink. The included USB cable is quite short (the over-all length includes the fairly long, non-bendable plugs), which could be awkward or problematic when connecting to a tower desktop computer. There are no power or activity LED lights. [ Conclusion ] If price is the utmost concern, this drive could be a reasonable external storage option. However, competing drives costing not much more (as of the writing of this review) are available that include an Ingress Protection rating, higher maximum read and write speeds, and are less hampered by thermal throttling issues. With that in mind, I will give this product a very conditional thumbs up.
