It’s my first external hard drive and it’s extremely easy to use. I bought a laptop because I enrolled in school and it was only 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD because I really only planned on having essays on there, but now I can save my space on there because of this thing. Very easy to access my files when needed. It’s very compact and lightweight. Very suitable for any student. Highly recommend

I was happy to get this highly-rated drive for a good price.
Maybe I'm missing something but I'm backing up my system SSD with this thing and it seems to be moving along at a GB/min+, rather than a GB+/sec.
Will do a different test on it later using a different port. But for now.....

When working on big artistic projects, where high resolution files and tough workflows are common, it's very important to have storage options that work quickly and reliably. The sleek and small form of the Crucial X9 Pro shows that it is designed with the user in mind. The anodized metal case gives it a high-end look and feel, and the lightweight design means it wont add much weight to your backpack or camera bag. This Cruicial X9 Pro 2TB SSD Drive for Mac, arrives in a much smaller package than I anticipated. And when you open the package, it's even smaller than I imagined. It's made of anodized aluminum case on the top and sides and likely a strong and durable Polycarbonate on the bottom, which lays flat on a surface while being used. It comes out of the box formatted for APFS, which is Apple File System, a proprietary fils system developed by Apple for MacOS Sierra and later, iOS 10.3 and later, tvOS 10.2 and later and all versions of iPadOS. Since this is specifically made for the Apple Mac ecosystem, it couldn't be simpler to set up and use.
While I own iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPad 11 Pro M1, this is going to be used as my Time Machine Backup Drive for MacBook Pro M1. And for this it's honestly plug and use. It comes with a very short USB C to USB C cable, which I initially thought was too short. But in reality, it's perfect. Plug the cable in the USB C on the MacBook Pro and the other end into the Crucial X9 Pro. It immediately lights up (where there's a lanyard hole)and appears on the top corner of the MacBook Pro screen. Right click on it to tell it to backup and it goes about its business. The first backup took a while as there is a LOT of data to backup. Subsequent backups will only take a couple minutes. I love how this SSD was designed specifically for Apple users who want a seamless out-of-the box storage experience.
Read and write speeds are excellent with speeds up to 1050MB/s and using the supplied USB C cable, you get 10GB/s, which is excellent. Crucial claims the claims the read speeds of the X9 Pro were made using Crystal Disk Mark version 8.0.4 on Windows. Depending the Apple device you use, your speeds may vary, especially between Apple devices which are x86 (Intel Based) or Apple Silicone (M1/M2/M3 Based). According to Crucial, Apple prioritizes read speed over write speed. Either way, it's more than fast enough for my intended purpose. Crucial claims the drive will read a single 150GB in 2.5 minutes and a single 300GB file in 5 minutes.
Crucial is a Micron company and they say they are proud to "evangelize" software solutions which help us consumers get the most of their drives. Some of the solutions Crucial supports are Adobe Creative Cloud (they even offer a one month free trial with the purchase of this SSD), mylio photos, Apple Time Machine and Apple Filevault.
The X9 Pro is drop and shock tested to very high standards. This drive should be able to handle just about anything you can throw at it. With a 5 year warranty, there's peace of mind in owing the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac SSD. The Crucial brand from Micron, is an innovator in external storage and if this X9 Pro is any indication of their quality, they've accomplished their goals handsomely.

Tiny and fast hard drive

This is a very impressive hard drive for Apple devices. I conducted my review using a M1 Mac Mini and an iPad Pro M1. By default, it is formatted to APFS so if you have any desire to use it on a PC you will need to format it to NTFS or FAT32. I fully intend to use this hard drive for my on-the-go photography drive.
Pros:
- Tiny!
- Fast
- Lightweight
- Durable
- Storage space
- Great warranty (5 years)
Cons:
- USB-C cable is short
First impression:
So long as you are using an Apple device with USB-C, there is no set up and the device will work out of the box. The first thing that will surprise you is the size of this hard drive! It is tiny! I attached photos to compare it with other objects. Although SSD external drives are already small, prepare to be amazed. Being small, it is also extremely light, and you will easily be able to store it in any pocket in your bag, just be sure not to lose it. Of note there is a hook on the corner to place a lanyard or a ring on it, though anything metal might scratch up the drive. I received the light gold variant, and I thought it would not be to my liking, but in person it is a more silverish color.
Performance:
I had no issues transferring files from my M1 iPad Pro to this hard drive and it was immediately detected. Similarly, there were no issues on my M2 Mac. Performance was a bit slower than the advertised 1050 MB/s and I achieved 939 MB/s read and 905 MB/s write when benchmarked. My device came with a review guide which explained that USB controllers in Mac devices result in some lower performance with Apple silicon. I expect you might achieve higher speeds if you format it to NTFS and use it on PC. The device performs at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds (not 2x2).
Software:
There is not much included in the device but there are a few useful trials. Adobe Creative Cloud comes with a 1-month All-Apps plan which is very useful. Oddly, there is a link to “Storage Executive” software to manage the hard drive, but it appears to lead to a Windows only link. Additionally, there is a 1-month trial for Mylio Photos.

Mighty little external SSD for Mac

It's not often that one sees external hard drives designed for Macs. The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac is tiny, fast, and offers 2 Terabytes (TB) of plug-and-play storage. It weighs a little more than one ounce and has a hole for a lanyard or key chain, so you can take it anywhere. The Solid State Drive (SSD), by definition, has no moving parts and does not require a power pack. Simply open the box and plug it into your Mac with the supplied USB-C to USB-C cable.
I connected the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac with a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 chip and 16GB of memory. I downloaded some very large files so quickly that I want to use this drive as my new Time Machine backup disk. Tip: using this SSD as your Time Machine disk requires you to erase any files that come loaded on the X9 Pro, so download the files first. One file offers a free 1-month Adobe subscription.
I also connected the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac to my iPad Air, to download 16GB of files stored in my iCloud drive. File transfer in this setup was much slower, since the iPad Air has a slower chip and a smaller memory than my MacBook Pro. But the Crucial SSD did the job!
The high-performance 10Gb/second transfer cable is about 9 inches long. This is convenient if you can connect directly to your Mac and lay the drive flat. I found it too short for my setup. If you need a longer cable, be sure to purchase one with the same transfer rate to get the stated performance from this Crucial SSD.
Pros:
- true plug and play
- very small form factor
- attractive design
- weighs just over 1 ounce
- high-speed data transfer cable supplied with the SSD
- formatted for Mac out of the box
- 5 year warranty
Cons:
- short high-speed data transfer cable

CRUCIAL 2TB X9 Pro for Max hits the speeds advertised. I also like the design of this Tiny little portable SSD! Small enough to put on a keyring and take with you anywhere. So far I put all of my media I could want on this little device. Taking the advice from the manual, I’ve used the supplied USB-C giving me the optimal speeds. Using it with a MacBook 1,050 MB/s read and write.
I’ve packed this little SSD with media of all kinds. Games, photos, music files, etc. this SSD is made for MAC only but was able to test it with Windows 11. Same speeds on a different system. Crucial does make a Windows version of the X9. It’s not much to say about this adorable SSD. It’s super awesome! Design looks great with a Mac, like that it’s small, it’s quick, and it works. Best Buy allowed me to test this product and while there are tons of SSDs out there. This one is one of the best I’ve used this year. External wise. 5 out of 5 stars. This is a brand I wholeheartedly trust when it comes to storing some media.

I have been using this Crucial X9 Pro for a few days now and have been very impressed. The SSD is very fast, reliable, and easy to use. It has a sleek and surprisingly compact design, with a metal enclosure and a rubber back. The unit is lightweight and portable, making it ideal for daily use. Throw it in your backpack or pocket without adding noticeable weight. I tried using it on two different iPads. The 10th gen USB-C iPad had no issue detecting and using the X9. However, when attempting to use it with my older lightning iPad, I had no luck with my USB-C to thunderbolt cable.
The X9 Pro has a USB-C 3.2 gen 2 interface, which delivers speeds up to 1050 MB/s. The SSD also supports USB-A 3.1 gen 2 and USB-A 3.0, so you can use it with different devices and is generally backwards compatible. The box comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter, so you don’t need to buy extra cables if it’s not something you currently own.
I was able to use the X9 Pro as designed for Apple products and I had no issue there. However, I was surprised that it also worked without issue on Windows and Android too. It is easy to set up and use, and it does not require any software installation. You just plug it in and it works.
Overall, I think this is a great external SSD for anyone who needs a fast, reliable, and easy to use external storage device. The drive has solid features and a high capacity, and it is very affordable compared to other SSDs in the market. The drive appears to be well built and durable, and it comes with a 5-year warranty. I great recommendation for anyone looking for portable a high quality storage devices.

This little external SSD is tiny. It’s only about 2 ½ inches long but it is a real 2TB SSD drive.
What’s in the Box:
X9 PRO for Mac 2 TB SSD drive
USB C to USB C cable
Free one month trial to Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan
Warranty info
Learn more QR code that goes to a 404 Page not found
Using the provided cable, I connected the X9 pro to the USB C port on my iPad Pro (5th generation). I then opened the built-in iPad FILES app and there the drive was. No configuration and no additional apps needed. I made a “Backup” folder on the X9. Then I copied all 162 files in my iPad’s Downloads folder to the new directory on the X9 (using the FILES move function). It took less than 2 seconds. I was impressed.
The free trial of Adobe Creative Cloud is tempting, but this review is about the X9 Pro for Mac SSD drive.
Even though it clearly says “For Mac” I figured I might as well see if I could also use it on a Windows laptop. I tried to connect the X9 to one of my Windows 11 laptops. Hmm, no luck. I could not make the laptop recognize the X9 SSD. I tried it on one of my Windows 10 laptops with the same result. So, unlike some “For Mac” products, this one seems to really be only for iPads and Macs. (I don’t have an iPhone 15 to test it on).
It was time for a little research. I noticed the Learn more QR code on the box. Well that went to a 404 Page not found. I also tried the “Get Started” QR code on the SSD wrapper. That got my X9 registered but wasn’t much help with the “will it work with Windows, too” question. After some web searches, I found that even Crucial’s web site did not mention a version of the X9 Pro specifically for Mac (at the time of this review). More searching only revealed a couple of product review websites for the “For Mac” version of the X9 Pro. None had any mention whether this version of the X9 Pro also worked on anything non-Apple. I decided that if this “for Mac” version of the X9 is different from a regular X9 Pro, it was so new there isn’t much out there about it yet. For now, I will need to take Crucial at their word that this truly is “For Mac”.
Since the drive works really (REALLY) well for what it was advertised for, I shouldn’t complain. It says clearly on the Box and in the product description “X9 Pro for Mac”. Plus, Best Buy even checked with me to make sure I had an iPad or Mac to use it on. So, if you have a Mac and/or an iPad Pro (with a USB C connection), this could very well solve any backup and/or storage problems you have.

## Design
When I first opened the box, I was surprised how small this 2TB drive is! It has a gold aluminum exterior that compliments my 2023 Mac mini very well. Since it is so small, it sits nicely on top of the Mac mini without being an eyesore.
There is an activity LED in the notched corner of the drive that thankfully stays off when the drive is not being actively read or written to.
## Performance
This drive only comes with a USB-C cable only, so if you need USB-A, you will need to purchase an adapter separately. As Apple moves to USB-C standard, this is becoming less of an issue for Mac users.
Using the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app, I tested the read and write speeds of the drive. The results (which are attached) were just shy of the advertised 1,050MB/s speed, but still much faster than most of external hard drives I’ve used. Although I use the cloud for a lot of things, you just can't beat the performance of an external SSD when working with large video files.
I decided to use this drive for Time Machine backups from my Mac and the first backup took less than 30 minutes! Subsequent backups have been very quick as well. I like that I can just leave this drive connected to my Mac mini since it is so small and easy to tuck out of the way.
The drive did get fairly warm during that initial backup, but the aluminum exterior seems to dissipate heat well.
## Summary
Overall, this is a tiny yet small drive for Apple users. It is ultra portable and great for bringing along to manage large files for your Mac, iPhone 15 Pro and iPad. You could also reformat it and use it for a Windows computer as well.

This Crucial X9 Pro for Mac 2T external ssd works as described! I love it. I plug it into my iPhone 15pro max and then files can be saved directly onto this Crucial X9 Pro for Mac 2T ssd! It's perfect. I want to buy 2 more! I opted for the Mac version just to keep things simple and yes, it is very easy to use as it is set up to work like plug and play. The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac 2T is fast enough for my MacBook, iMac and iPhone so I didn't opt for the X10. I just went for the Crucial X9 Pro for Mac 2T. I partitioned 1T for my iPhone and 1T for my iMac. That was easy to set up. It's so fast I don't ever feel bothered with the speed because it just works smoothly and in real time. The size is amazing as it fits close onto my iPhone. It's durable. I really couldn't ask for anything more to be done to make this product better.

The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac is such an outstanding value. It is very compact, I feel like there is probably a 2230 M.2 drive inside of the enclosure because it is so small. It feels quite rugged and premium. It comes with a USB C cable and is formatted to work with Mac and iPad / iOS devices out of the box. It has a very nice design, it is a perfect match for your Mac or iPads. Crucial claims that this drive has 1050 MB/s read and write speeds. It is not the fastest available but it is definitely very quick. I use it to edit large video files that I record with my mirrorless camera. I also use it to store movies for watching on my MacBook or iPad, and for storing games and apps for my MacBook Pro. in my week of use, it has been very reliable and I have not encountered any hiccups what so ever. Apps load just as quick as my MacBook Pros drive. I love that I can also connect it to my iPad mini and continue my work flow and or movie that I was watching on my computer. It will work with windows but you will have to reformat it before you can write files onto it. My Samsung galaxy tablet recognized the drive without a hitch and I was able to stream my media from this drive on my android tablet. If you are looking for a compact external SSD that can store a ton of files and media quick and reliably, I highly recommend this one.

Summary: Crucial X9 Pro For Mac, convenient small form factor, USB-C, works as advertised, doesn’t overheat with prolonged use, and hits the speed limit of all but the fastest, newest Macs. Don’t hesitate to buy if you need the space and speed.
Pros:
- Gets close to maximum speed (I measured 896 MB/S, they advertise 1050)
- Maintains speed without getting too hot
- Small convenient squared off form factor (65 x 50 mm)
- Quality construction (anodized aluminum with rubberized nonslip base)
- Plug and Play, Formatted for Mac, APSF
- Drop, dust, water resistant
- Supplied USB-C cable works fine
- Works with my USB-C iPad and USB-C iPhone
- Can be reformatted for other devices (Windows, etc)
- Get one month free of Adobe® Creative Cloud All Apps plan
Matter of Taste:
- Discrete activity light, not obtrusive at all but some people just hate lights (I liked it)
- No color choices. Must admit, when you own several SSDs color choices is nice.
- The PC version includes WINDOWS software ‘Storage Executive’ for managing your storage. Doesn’t work for the Mac. I just use MacOS for that just fine.
Cons:
- Isn’t free? Yep, really got nothing against this external SSD at all. A first for my reviews.
More Detail:
External SSDs are becoming a commodity, seems like every manufacturer has one. I own several by Samsung, Western Digital, and SanDisk and the Crucial X9 Pro is my new favorite due to its smaller form factor and doesn’t get hot in use (see pic, competitor names removed).
So, what is ‘For Mac’ about it? It’s formatted in APFS (Mac’s preferred format for speed). The regular X9 Pro comes formatted in ExFat (Window’s preferred). I own the 4Gb version of the regular version (too), and I just formatted it to APFS with MAC OS disk utility. And the For Mac version is marked ‘for mac’ on the bottom. Other than that, don’t think there is a difference… so something of a marketing thing, but does provide some initial convenience. Buy whichever is cheaper. Format as needed. Both X9 Pro’s are great drives.
So, let’s talk about speed. Not discussed much, but Macs do not implement the fasted form of USB 3.2 and hence USB C is restricted to 1050 Mb/S external disk speeds. Which this SSD advertises as matching. When I measured in Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I got 896 Mb/S write speed (see pic). This is completely normal and compares well to competitors. What is impressive is that when I transferred 268.85 gb (3794 files) it maintained its speed and completed the transfer in 5 minutes 06 seconds (878.8 Mb/S) without getting hot. Btw, as an aside, for me this drive is plenty fast enough, but if you want the absolute fastest, the latest macs implement Thunder Bolt 4 and you can get NVME enclosures that bypass USBC and work at the faster TB4 speeds.
About that form factor, who really cares if it is small and squared off? You do if you want to attach it to your new iPhone or mirrorless camera for capturing video directly. Or if you just want to be able to pack it away easily. Much appreciated.
And attention to detail, I typically throw away the supplied cables on external drives because they tend to be cheap and don’t often perform well, but Crucial’s did. I will keep it. It connects by USB-C by the way, as most SSDs do these days.
Really, only have good things to say. Might wish for different colors to make it easy to sort them in my bag, but that’s about it.

There's no other way to put it - this Crucial X9 Pro 2TB External SSD is an fantastic piece of technology. I've had the pleasure of using this drive for a couple of weeks now, and it's one of those pieces of technology that just works, and you don't have to think about it.
When I first got the package, I thought I had been shipped the wrong product; it was that small. The box contains the drive, a small instruction pamphlet, and a USB-C to USB-C cable. Installation is effortless – plug in the USB-C cable to the drive and a free port on your Mac. I am using this with my M1 Mac Studio to supplement the internal SSD storage, so I chose one of the Thunderbolt ports on the rear, but I tested it with the front ports, and the speed was the same. One huge bonus – no power cable is needed.
MacOS immediately recognizes the drive, and you’re off and running. There are a few URLs on the drive, including a free 1-month trial of Adobe Creative Cloud All-Apps, icons, some transfer software, etc.
I am replacing an external spinning hard drive with all of my movies, music, digital photos, and larger documents. I had both mounted and started a large file copy to move the data between the two drives. The copy was definitely limited by the speed of the USB 3.0 external spinning hard disk, and I did have the copy fail about a third of the way through, but I tried the copy again, and it resumed from that point. I returned to my office maybe 30 minutes later, and the copy had finished. I could disconnect the old hard disk from my Mac and lean entirely on this external SSD. Bootups and searches are faster, as it’s not looking at the spinning disk for anything. Copying large files is pretty much instant – you don’t notice it happening for the most part, as I did with the old external HDD.
I ran some benchmarks on this drive, and it clocks in around 900MB/sec – which for everyday workflows is as fast as you could possibly ever need. Anything faster would likely be unnoticeable. The disk utility I use to test with states that you could stream (read and write) 12K/24FPS video to this drive – which is beyond what I’ll ever do.
This drive is everything you could possibly want for day-to-day computing, including backups, photo editing, and watching your local media. I’d buy this again in a heartbeat.

I was looking for external SSD drive for my MacBook pro and got Crucial X9 Pro 2TB portable SSD made for Mac. It came with Crucial X9 Pro and Crucial 10GB/s USB-C to USB-C cable. I am impressed the sleek design and compact factor of this SSD. It made of anodized aluminum and a rubberized soft-touch base with 65 x 50 mm design.
It is plug and play with MacBook pro and it recognized the drive without any installation or additional drivers. It has excellent read / write speed up to 1050MB/s. I was able to register the product by scanning the barcode.
I was able to edit photos and videos using Photoshop and Lightroom and it handled large video files without any issues, and it worked faster than any other SSD drives I have used in the past. The data is stored with Apple’s FileVault volume encryption. It has dust proof and IP55 water / dust resistance and drop-proof durability up to 7.5 feet.
I was able to copy large set of fields within minutes. I have used AmorphousDiskMark app to test the read / write speed and results are matching close to advertised read speed of 1005MB/s and write speed of 960MB/s. It comes with 5-year warranty.
I was able to connect this to iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPad Pro and both recognized this drive. It is much easier to copy the photos and videos from iPhone to this drive quickly. The 4K videos used to take longer time to upload in iCloud copied in few minutes and then I was able to process those vides / photos quickly in MacBook Pro. I am impressed with Crucial X9 PRO 2TB SSD compact size, lightweight and read / write speeds. It is a must have external SSD drive for Apple devices to have extended storage with SSD read / write speeds.

The Crucial X9 Pro for Mac is a must have for people on the go. As a Mac user I'm always perplexed at the rising cost of storage space on a new Mac. So I'm always looking for alternatives. However, finding reliable, comparable, and most importantly portable (I have a MacBook Pro and take it EVERYWHERE!) extra storage can be a bit of a challenge. Then I was introduced to the Crucial X9 Pro. It was made for Mac so I figured It would at least be easy to incorporate into my ecosystem.I'm glad I did. For starters, Its small. Roughly the size of an AirPods Pro case and only 1/3 as thick. this allows me to stick in my pants pocket (or even that small pocket in a pair of jeans that nobody even uses anymore!). It's plug and play, no downloads needed. I was able to use it right out of the box being that it was already formatted for my Mac. It is apparently useable for newer iPads and iPhones, sadly it will not work on my iPhone 14 Pro because it is not USB-C. however this has not stopped me from using this 2TB extra storage to hold all the music and video files I have and read and write speeds so fast I can work on the files straight off the drive with barely a notice to and lag in updating! It's such a great little addition to my Mac, and more affordable than upgrading the storage when buying a new Mac. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is needing more storage space but doesn't want to have to buy a new Mac and pay the premium for extra storage.
I would recommend this to a friend

The Crucial 2TB X9 Pro… TLDR: Excellent drive for fast transfers!
Pros:
> Small, lightweight, super portable. In fact, if you're not careful, you may lose it in a pinch :P
> Great transfer speeds… Most of big single file transfers, which were 1GB+, yielded transfer speeds over 800Mbps. Transferring smaller files that measured over 1GB+, yielded transfer slower transfer speeds at around 400Mbps+, but thats the norm for any drive.
> It’s an SSD… no moving parts = more durable than traditional hard disk drives.
> Any device that has a USB Type C port will almost be compatible with this. I was able to use it with my Apple devices (MBP 14 M2, MBA 13 M1, 11” iPad Pro M1), Android devices (S23 Ultra,
Tab S8 Ultra), and Windows devices (Scar 16, Surface Pro 9).
Cons:
> None that i’m aware of so far yet 🙂
Would’ve been nice to see this be a TB4 (Thunderbolt 4) drive since it's targeted for Macs, which come equipped with multiple TB4 USB Type C ports… That would’ve allowed for better, faster SSDs to be put in for even faster transfer speeds!!! But perhaps one day? As it is, the speeds are already pretty blazingly fast 🙂
Overall, would highly recommend to anyone that is looking for a lightning fast portable drive… Definitely grab this one!!!
