There are more engrossing dramas than Dallas Buyers Club competing for Best Picture. More remarkably cinematic experiences, more innovative biopics and more visually stunning productions. But there isn't a more moving or timely true story among them, nor one that more poignantly and effectively deals with an issue still very much at the center of social and political debate today: in this case, the right of a terminal patient to control his or her own medical treatment, regardless of FDA approval. And with McConaughey and Leto turning in award-winning, vanity-shunning performances, the film is only that much more powerful. Universal's Blu-ray release is worthy of praise too, although we're once again treated to a much too short, much too forgettable EPK-driven supplemental package. Fortunately, video and audio are dead on, meaning the Best Picture nominee looks and sounds like the potential winner it is.

A movie about a man dying of AIDS could have been a bummer, but this movie is more about a man dealing with the fact he's sick and trying to do something about it, for himself and to help others. McConaughey more than deserved his Academy Award, as did Jared Leto. I was afraid the movie would be too preachy and heavy-handed, but for the most part DBC dealt with everything straight-on but without forcing the story or the emotions. How the movie handled his friends bailing on him was a bit clunky, I guess, but that's a small part of the story and does lead to some pretty good McConaughey scenes.

I really did not expect to enjoy this movie given its subject matter. The movie rails on the FDA which I don't think people are really that stupid or uncaring. I kept following the different plot twists, expecting the lead to end up in jail but it never really happens. It was an enjoyable movie and it carries a good message about people needing access to the drugs to fight something as deadly as the HIV virus and aids when it first came on the scene. The movie does a great job on the props and if you are from that era, you'll recognize a number of things. I know I did.

This is one of those movies that sickes with you long after viewing. It has a a deep impact on an important recurring issue and makes light on what people should care about. The acting alone here makes this film worth while. The blu ray has a really nice picture quality and sound wonderful on and HD TV. There are also a handful of great special features that show more of what the real Ron Woodruff was really like and the impact of AIDS. I highly recommend buying this, you won't be disappointed.

Jean-Marc Vallée's gritty tale of the murky early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is both informative & moving. McConaughey proves his worth as the straight man saddled with the gay plague who will not be satisfied to sit back and let it run it's course. Giving a great look at the real-life underground buyers clubs that actually were responsible for pushing medicine & treatment of the virus to where it is today, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is tearjerker with a sense of real world hope & compassion.

Interesting true story of man with AIDS who defies the US medical restrictions, gets his drugs in Mexico and sets up a buyer's club for others who need help but can't get it in America. Terrific performances by McConaughey and Leto, both of whom got Oscars. The disc is fine, but really needs a commentary track to give insight into the real story and the filming. There is a documentary, and deleted scenes; but, still, interested viewers are bound to feel shortchanged.

What an amazing film for McConaughey and Leto to choose to do. The story is deep. Set in the early 80's with the first scare of AIDS in everyone's minds. Leto is fantastic as the transgendered AIDS patient looking for a friend. McConaughey is mind blowing as an AIDS ridden Texas laborer and rodeo rider. Such amazing performances from both these actors. You'll never look at them the same way again. I do mean, you will view them in a great way from here on out.

The movie starts strong and doesn't stop. It takes you on a journey through one mans struggle that soon becomes more than that. It's shot expertly and the subject material takes you on a tour of emotions. A great movie but it's not for everyone. If you like movies with substance then this is for you. If you like a fast paced films that go through the motions then I would skip this one. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy.

This movie is based on the events in the life of Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual, Texas cowboy who has become infected with HIV/AIDS. The movie shows him, with a diagnosis of 30 days to live, a very powerful month. Anyone who lived at the time when AIDS was first announced as a "homosexual" disease can probably remember cruel jokes about AIDS, there is a powerful scene in a grocery store that makes me wish I could have met Mr. Woodroof.

I at 1st did not give this movie a thought, then read some reviews & gave it a try. The story is about Ron Woodruff getting aids through his careless life style & then what he does when the Doctor tells him he has no chance of a long life. He then takes on the FDA & big drug companies. Matthew McConaughey did an outstanding job in this portrayal.

Dallas Buyers Club was one of the best movies of 2013. McConaughey and Leto both earned their Oscars for Best Actor and Supporting Actor. Jennifer Garner was good, as well as other supporting cast members. The movie itself is very interesting -- set in the mid 80s during the height of the HIV / AIDS epidemic. The blu-ray looks and sounds great as well!

The movie grabs you from the first. It shows how when a person gets sick they lose some of their really good friends. It let you know that no matter what you are told about your health, you still have a strong will to live and will do whatever you have to to be able to live your life to the fullest and make great new friends along the way. No one should have to die alone.

An exceedingly well researched and well written screenplay into the early days of FDA inaction with respect to the use of medications to combat the AIDS scourge. Its no wonder that Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Oscars for their dead on portrayals of people on the edge of despair but with the abject determination to fight a battle that nobody wanted them to fight.

Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, and Jenifer Garner perform in one of the most emotional, powerful, and captivating dramas of 2013, Matthew has really outdone himself in the amount of time and sacrifice he puts into his character and Jared performs one of the most unique and human characters I've seen in a long time. A must watch for Drama fans and newcomers alike.

Powerful perfomances by Matthew Mcconaughey and Jared Leto. Tough subject matter, but these two actors provide the performance's of their careers with unwavering dedication to the roles they played. Powerful, riveting and excellent storytelling, about one of the most misunderstood diseases in American history. Well deserving of the Academy Awards that they received.

When I finished this movie it took a long time to think about another movie to compare it. I concluded that this movie reminds of Scarface. The only thing is that the main character sells memberships instead of drugs to fight this incredible and un-curable disease known as aids. The movie is a true story and I highly recommended it!

I bought this movie without seeing it at the theatre. I was not disappointed. This is a great story and the acting was wonderful. I hope Matthew and Jared win Oscars, they deserve it! Of course, it was easy to buy on BestBuy.com and it was shipped so that I received it on the day it was released in stores. And, best of all, I got a terrific price. Go, Best Buy!

This is a great movie about how the AIDS crisis was handled back in the late 70's into the 80's (and still struggling with these issues today). All actors were phenomenal in how this movie was presented. Would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see great acting, but will warn it is not a feel good movie, but does have some very funny scenes.
