5.1 not true surround, but nice sound

Got this as an open box. Had to get rid of standard surround due to some changes around the house. While the 5.1 isn’t very obvious compared to rear speakers, it provides nice sound. Basically plug and play. To sync a remote, search YouTube

I am a Def Tech fan and have their top of the line 9800 series speakers with side surround and rear and center channel. Phenomenal system for watching films. This little two piece system does an excellent job with movies. The sub and bar work together very well and produce very good imagery. My standards are high but I think this system is excellent.

Shopped around listening to different soundbars and this one is the best by far.
Closest to 5.1 surround without satellite speakers. Great rich sound even at low volume. It specifically stands out with movies. Could not be happier.

Amazing soundbar i have had horrible luck with soundbars even high end ones over $1600 but this gem is simply fantastic! Will only buy audio from this company for home theater. Built for movies with dialogue emphasized and bass for atmospheric warmth and mids are terrific. Can’t compliment enough.

this is a great sounding sound bar, but lacks the "5.1" sound that you think you are getting when buying something that says 5.1

This soundbar sounds fantastic, and has me re-doing my living room home theater setup. Originally, I am/was running a Yamaha HTR-5250 receiver I bought back in 2000 (from Best Buy) along with a JBL HLS setup, 810's(front), HLS Center, and HLS 410's(rear). This has been a solid setup for me for many years, but the receiver and speakers take up a lot of room. Now enter the Definitive Technologies Studio Advance Soundbar. This soundbar sounds amazing. Crisp highs, punchy bass, and plenty of volume. I did not realize you could get so much sound out of such a small package (in comparison). The wireless subwoofer can be placed just about anywhere as long as there is a power outlet. This package is going to allow me to regain some real estate in my living room, plus get a nice upgrade in sound.
There are a couple things I don't like about this soundbar:
1.) One issue that stands out to me is the 5.1 designation. I've tried several movies, and honestly, I don't get the sense of 5.1 surround sound like I do with my original setup. I'm connected via the ARC setup, and verified playback is set to Dolbly Digital/Bitstream, and I'm using the soundbar's "movie" setting. It's just not the same.
2.) There's no way to EQ or tune the soundbar. You have three settings. Music, Night, and Movie.
3.) Being so new, there are no Xfinity/Comcast remote codes to be able to control the soundbar from the Xfinity remote, so this means using two remotes for now. Also, the remote it comes with is just... meh.
4.) Having to connect it to Google Home to get Bluetooth functionality.
Things I like about the soundbar:
1.) The build quality is top notch. Even the packaging was very well thought out.
2.) Great sound from such a small package, and the ability to place the wireless subwoofer just about anywhere.
3.) The brushed aluminum and black speaker grill material will match almost any decor, and looks very stylish.
4.) It's a viable option to a complete home theater setup, and takes up much less space.
It's my opinion that it doesn't deserve 5*'s, but also that it is better than 4*'s. I'd give it a 4.5*'s if it was an option.

Put in a 14 x 16 room, it does a more than adequate job of filling the room with sound. Like to ability to enhance dialog, bass is plenty good, too. Definitive makes great products, you won't be disappointed.

I am a big fan of Definitive Technology, my home theatre is built around their BP9000 series speakers, but I have some real mixed emotions about this sound bar. Bottom line is that this sound bar will outperform any stock TV speaker however it’s a mixed bag when it comes to overall audio performance. The audio quality was very good for Music and acceptable for movies. If you are looking for a spatial sound stage or distinct 5.1 sound affects you may be disappointed. I played several 5.1 movies with mixed results. The thumps and bumps were loud and crisp in the movies but the sound stage was not spatial enough for me to say that this soundbar outperforms a 3.1 soundbar.
Quick Hits
- The installation was quick and simple with easy instructions to follow.
- Using the supplied HDMI cable and HDMI ARC ports allowed me to use my TV remote for control.
- The LED indicators on the sound bar are intuitive once you understand them. The LEDs will light up in blue or green color to differentiate between DTS and Dolby.
- I was able to play the various DTS and Dolby Digital audio formats (5.1 and 7.1)
- I connected my Blu Ray player to the soundbar and was able to play 4k HDR movies through it. The extra HDMI ports on the soundbar allow you to connect extra devices if you have limited HDMI ports on your TV. I had to use a high quality HDMI 2.2 cable for this to work.
- The Subwoofer is punchy and produces good bass especially in movie mode.
- Bluetooth and Spotify both worked great and were simple to set up.
- After hours of playing neither the soundbar or power supply produced an unreasonable amount of heat. Something to consider when placing the soundbar directly below that expensive TV.
Things to Consider
- The Dolby and DTS 5.1 audio has a limited sound stage. The soundbar does provide good front and center speaker audio but has limited success at mimicking rear speakers.
- The soundbar does not support Dolby Atmos.
- You can control the volume of the center speaker and the bass but there is no EQ available beyond the movie or music setting.
- The Subwoofer’s only light is on the back so you cannot see if its operational from the front! It doesn’t have the standard Def Tech lighted “D” on the front!
- Even though my Subwoofer is about 5 ft from the sound bar it seems to lose connection which is apparent with a short lack of bass. I have verified this by turning the sub around so I could see the light flicker when the bass dropped. Not sure if this is unique to my setup or not.
- Having to use Google for the installation may be a negative for some.
- The packaging is great however the subwoofer is down firing and has no protection over the cone. You have to be careful when unpacking the sub so that you don’t put pressure on the cone when you handle it.

Had the big Sony before but returned for this product. Sound is much clearer. Bass is impressive at half way. No need to max bass out.

Definitive speakers have a great reputation for good reason. Speaker was purchased at a great sale price and didn’t disappoint
