Sound twice as good as the 45 series I had them and exchanged them for the 55 and was so much happier. I use them in my living room as a 3 channel setup due to having a media room with a full definitive technology setup. The center in the living room is a 9040 definitive technology.

Bought these years ago and had to take them back after a layoff. Glad to have them back to replace two 5 1/4" surrounds. Already sounds much better with 6 1/2" woofers, lot more bass. Waiting for them to break rest of way in.

These are well designed bookshelf speakers. Quality of construction is impressive for a mid-range price and the protected aluminum dome tweeter and 6 1/2" cast aluminum "basket" design driver, set in an aesthetically pleasing baffle, deliver a very satisfying full stage sound. The top is a grill-covered "racetrack" bass radiator that helps create an overall sound that suggests a much larger speaker. Very musical, responsive, nice clarity.

It took Deftech 10 years to come up with new design of bookshelf speakers, the old bookshelf are very good also, to better them they need to have something special, and they did. I think the looks of new speakers are better than last design. I have Deftech Mythos speakers line with super cube 6000 subwoofer, i needed to replace my mythos 5 mains with these, this is will give me good midrange sound and bass (added benefit) also. i had to buy speakers stand for this also (i did buy B&W speakers stand because deftech stands are not available anywhere and i did not like the SANUS stands, the base were too big for my linking).
I am still in the break in period and i could imagine the sound will get better even more, one thing i really like about deftech speakers generally is they tend to give a disappearing sound, i mean is you can not detect which speaker is send you a specific sound, i tried different brand and i could say i observed the difference, i wanted to check out the B&W bookshelf speakers but to keep the voice matching (or timber match) i kept the Deftech brand, for anyone else it is safe bet to buy these speakers for HT or for stereo music, i am using Yamaha RX1700V AVR other speakers are Mythos Gem from surrounds and Mythos 3 for Center channel. The speakers are very nice looking with or out without the grill. Good for Decor also, for me a big factor (the main reason i got the mythos line in first place). i would recommend this setup for HT also, with SM 45 for surround, SC4000 or SC600 sub, there are timber match center channel speakers also.

Big Soundstage, Big Bass

These are great speakers, particularly for the price. I use them for 2.0 audio on my desk, powered by a 105W Yamaha receiver. The soundstage is really big, rivaling that of much larger speakers, and provides an immersive experience. The bass is a bit booming. Overall accuracy is good but on some recordings some frequencies are a bit muddled; however, most well-mixed recordings sound stellar. I found the sound improved considerably during break-in and, to a lesser extent, with bi-amping. The bass can be refined by coupling them with a subwoofer and setting the crossover frequency; I typically run them w/out the sub.

I recently purchased a pair of these. I was looking at the DefTech towers but their price was a bit much for my budget (excellent sound, though). The salesman played these and I was very surprised at the quality and volume of these bookshelf speakers. He also played the SM65s and while they had a little more bass, the SM55s seemed to pop out with a brighter, cleaner sound. I have these bi-amped using a Yamaha RX-A830 receiver, paired with the DefTech CS9040 center speaker. I then added an RSL Speedwoofer 10S for the sub. These are setup in a 15x21 ft room with a vaulted ceiling. There is much more than enough sound to fill the room. The sound is clear, crisp, full and tight. Without the sub, these provide ample bass. I am extremely happy with my new set of speakers. I'm old school and never had much respect for bookshelf speakers. Listening to these changed all that for me. The proof is in the listening. Let your ears be your guide.

These speakers can “rock the casbah”! I’m using a SONY DH830 (140W per channel) to kick these things, configured as a simple stereo system, and they sound fantastic. So far I have listened to rock, top 40 and even some bluegrass by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and it all sounds great. The passive bass radiators work well enough that a subwoofer is not really necessary. Be careful though as these speakers, when pumped up, will make themselves and other stuff on your entertainment center walk about. These speakers are an excellent choice for a stereo system or for the front pillars of a home theater system.

Yes they sound that good. Clear, crisp, and the bass packs a punch. I had my doubts going in (they didn't sound that great in the demo room) but I took the extra 10 min to run the mic on my Marantz AVR. Huge difference. I agree with the other guy. Subs are almost overkill for a 10'X15' room (especially so on Blurays in HT). My recommendations besides a proper AVR setup...1. break em in as instructed 2. follow the speaker placement recommendations so that the bass/passive radiator can really play.

Good bass good and good highs and great dynamics I tried the BW 600 series but found these have a way better bass response and fills the room more because it has a top bass reflector speaker on top makes it feel like the band is in your room and also these speakers get better as you break them in it takes about 7 days I am very happy with them and you will be too.

Simply great speaker especially for the price. I'm not an audiophile by any means but was looking for something that sounds better than the polks my friend has. Clear sound with nice bass, paired them with the CS-9040 and 6.5i in-wall and in-ceilings. Hearing things in songs I've never heard before, but it all sounds so smooth. Amazing the difference quality speakers make over cheap stuff.

First off, I would like to include the fact that I am a best buy employee. As a costumer and a home theater representative, I would strongly recommend this product. For a $600 speaker pair you really have to make sure you're making the right decision. The first time I heard these speakers was 1 month after I had just started my job at best buy. When I went to the Magnolia store in Novi, I made the Home theater specialists life a bit difficult, as I wanted to hear every speaker, so I could differentiate the strengths and weaknesses of each one. As my VERY FIRST speakers, the Studio Monitor 55s blew me away in every aspect. I've always had an ear for "good" speakers but was hit with inspiration when introduced to these bookshelves with the amount of detail and immersion, these Definitive Technology speakers surround you with. You will be surprised at the amount of BASS these speakers have at their size especially after they're "broken into." I would highly recommend these as a starter set to the beginner audiophile, or in any part of a home theater setup. Great for music and movies with their soft but detailed sonic range. You might just be a Definitive Fanboy for the rest of your life.

Fine Value in Bookshelf Speaker

Speakers have a very good mid-range and high response, with bass reasonable for their size. There is speaker cloth on the top of the speaker case as well as on the removable front grid assembly so additional bass is provided through the top of the speakers.

I bought these speakers to be my front right and left speakers in my home theater system. I originally bought the StudioMonitor 45's, but decided to upgrade after reading other reviews, and I am definitely pleased with the decision. I am using the Procenter 1000 and my rear speakers are the Promonitor 800s. These speakers have an incredible range for a small bookshelf speaker. I have listened to all types of music with them alone, and also as part of the home theater system. I am very impressed with their sound, and the company provides excellent customer service if you have any questions on setting up the system. Overall, I am very pleased. Go listen to them in the Magnolia department, you won't be disappointed.
