Without a higher powered amplifier or receiver these speakers are not able to be used at their potential Sales people should be more informed on what they sell. I have found this to be a consistent problem in the past at the particular store that I shop at. A great deal for the money. Just needed a better understanding of what I was buying and what was needed to make them work properly.

Great if you don't have a sub

I have Def Tech 1000's and ProCenter 1000 center channel and love them. I demo'ed the BP-8020ST's in the Magnolia room and the rep never even had a sub of any kind on. I went with it, liked the way they sounded, knowing everything will sound better with my sub connected. I get these home and what do I find? THESE HAVE A BUILT-IN SUB!!! The BB Rep never even had the subs on these connected!!! I even went over to another BB store nearby, peeked behind the same speaker there, and what do I find? Sub not connected. So BB is demo'ing these to folks w/o the sub on. I even emailed Def Tech informing them about this and an automated ticket was created, and 12 days later, to my surprise,...absolutely ZERO response. I expected maybe a "thanks for letting us know". But, nada.
I ended-up returning the 8020's because although I REALLY liked the sound, I could not "tame" the subs, coupled with my own Klipsch 12" sub. I had to get 2 Y-cords, just to get 3 sub outputs split-out to 3 subs from my single LFE output. I think I would be better off with the other non-sub BP model #not sure if BB carries it?#
If you have no sub, OR, you just want a heck of a lot more bass, and you don't mind that bass coming from the front mains, than these will work very well. Just make sure you get BB to hook em up before you give them a listen...

The bi-polar sound is something amazing.

I upgraded my entire 5.1 setup to the Pro1000's (not counting the Pro1000 sub I already had) and also purchased a Denon 3313 and felt like I was just missing "mids" and fullness. In some instances, I could still pick out certain sounds coming from the L & R as opposed to having the sound be blended to where you can't hear where it's coming from. With these BP-8020ST's, that is not the case.
Having remembered something I read once about keeping your speakers w/in the same wattage range (i.e. don't have 100 watt surrounds and 300 watt fronts), After some listening of the Studio Monitor 55's and the BP-8040ST's since they were in the listening showroom, I was quite pleased with the 8040's but felt they'd overpower the rest of my setup AND I didn't need that much subwoofer. I listened to the BP-8020ST's outside of the listening rooms and although they didn't sound as great as the 8040's, they also weren't IN the listening room which would have made a big difference.
After getting these home and putting them through the calibration, the fullness in sound AND balance that I have with my now 7.1 setup is something. I'm very pleased with the mid end they provide and compliments my Pro1000 sub very nicely.
p.s. If your receiver has a primary and aux subwoofer RCA output and you already have a sub like I do, you don't have to run the RCA to one of the towers BUT, you will have to have the speaker outlet plugged in to get midrange. OR you could always run a Y-splitter.

I have been using Deftech speakers for more than 10 years, i have Mythos system in FR for Last 10 years with SC6000 subwoofer (updated recently). I am in the process of putting together a home theater area in my basement, it is large area so keeping that in mind, my setup is ST8020 for fronts, 8060 HD as center and SM55 bookshelf as surround, My subwoofer is Infinity R12. Yamaha Rx1700 is my AVR, for a large open area this system is amazingly full sounding. I am in breaking in period, the sound will get even better after 20-30 hours of break in, the bipolar effect is very nice in movies and music both. setup is, Front and Center is set to Large in AVR and Surround is set to small, Bass is send to subwoofer and Front both. i am really happy with this setup, if you have all area you might not need subwoofer but i would recommend to put SC4000 smaller in this system, the super cube sealed subwoofer blend much nicer as compared to other subwoofer.
Deftech speakers are great for the price, sale price going now makes this even better.

Great tower speakers for home theater

These are great speakers for your average sized room. I replaced two small pro-monitors on stands to the towers. Because of the form-factor, the towers do not take up any more space than the small speakers on the stands. The sound is excellent. I'm using a Def Tech center that I plan on upgrading to an 8040, and I have a SuperCube 2. The SuperCube plus the built in subs in the towers sound great once you tune the volumes to work together in your room. I found that the best setup for me was to hook up the towers just with the front left and right cables, and I did not hook up an LFE. When plugged in to power, the subs in the towers operate. The SuperCube is hooked up with an LFE. I had to set my Pioneer Elite receiver to "Plus" to output bass to both the towers and the external sub. It took some tweaking to get everything to blend well. Also, there is definitely a break-in period. These towers definitely got louder over a few weeks and they just sound better after some use. I have mine in a large great room that is open-concept to the breakfast area and kitchen, and I still get plenty of room-filling sound.

I have these speakers as my rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup, the 8060s are my fronts and am so impressed with the sound quality and could not be happier with my purchase. The 8 inch subs in each speaker give out ample bass and blend seamlessly with the rest of my system. For the price these are the best speakers you can buy. You will not be disappointed

Def-Tech has been around for a while now and basically rules the bi-polar tower world. These new entry's show that they continue to master the craft. I chose the 8020's over the 8040's based on what "i" heard. They just sounded better to me, their size is perfect and convey that you take your audio seriously but are not trying to be obnoxious about showing off you gear. The subs as mentioned in other reviews are a perfect match to the rest of the speakers and this is where they shine with total control over just how much you want to be moved by bass. Placement of these is important and in most situations they should be place at least a foot or more from a rear wall to allow for the correct reflections from the rear firing speaker. Placement will also dictate the level you run the bass at as well. I personally have a rather high-end JBL bass module so i tend to keep mine on the very low level between 2 and 5 but adjust to your liking.
When considering reviews, keep in mind that outside of comments on build quality or looks, you MUST listen to the speakers to really make an informed decision. I recommend a listen but will say if that is simply not possible, im pretty sure that buying these and setting them up in your home for a first time listen, will not disappoint.
For the price range, i passed on more expensive B&W, Mirage and Martin Logan towers so again, go listen if you can, you could end up saving yourself a few hundred or more dollars in the end. I did and ended up upgrading my center channel to Def Tech as well ( shown below)

Great Floor Speakers for Small Rm

Just bought these floor speakers the other day and so far I'm very pleased with the quality of sound and appearance. I have a small living room (12x15) and the built-in powered subwoofers definitely helped with the space. Plus, they put out enough power and the sound quality is great!

Just got these speakers right before the new year and they are amazing. Sound quality, look, everything really. The 8"sub on each tower and the fully adjustable output level of them makes for great bass w/o the need of a stand alone unit.

Full sound yet I can hear the voices

These speakers are the best. My budget was $700 per speaker and demoed these in house against B&W 684B and Martin Logan MO12BL. They blew both of those away. Perhaps it's the built in sub woofers that gave them a fuller sound but when a movie was demoed after the music, I could hear the voices much clearer as well. There's a reason they've been back ordered for so long online. It's nice the built in subs give enough bass, however, they also compliment your existing subs. Now I have four subs all turned on half way which give a nice crisp bass that's not over powering. The subs can be active or passive, it's up to you. I recommend listening very loud to Godsmack, Seether, or Breaking Benjamin while using these speakers, they can handle anything. I'm playing these through a Marantz SR5005 ($800) and also the Definitive Center Channel speaker (ProCenter 1000, $220).

Quality build.
Great sound stage and presence.
Very good value for the asking price.
A separate sub not really necessary. I have a 10" Klipsch sub and enjoy it on or off with these speakers.
Clear with tight base and mid-range.
Your settings should be set to flat for treble, mid and base. Start there.
Really awesome speakers. On the small side for floor standing models, but the sound is incredible and room filling.
