Desperate need for a new desktop tower

Found my years old Dell tower that I had purchased refurbished from a recycling store in Holland, MI before moving to Missouri was on it's last leg moving very slowly among other operational issues. Headed to the Best Buy store locally in Branson, MO and found out that there was nothing they could do for me. "Just happened" to have the Dell Inspiron Deskop on sale along with an Acer monitor. It could have not come at a better time. Bonus to save money! Best Buy is the Best Buy!

Good computer for the price (even has optical drive which is good because we still use audio CDs.) This replaced a 7 year old Dell. It was easy to set up, download drivers, and we were back up and running. Also, if you have OneDrive and sign in, it does all the work…even grabbed the browser favorites and put on the computer for us, which was a pleasant surprise.

After several months of use, I have no complaints! It's more than adequate for most uses including some video editing. I'm very happy I was able to install even some old programs on it. I am needing to upgrade the memory to do video editing, but I never expected it to be adequate for that. If you want to edit video or gaming, you probably want a faster machine. I'm hoping the memory upgrade will make it workable for me.

    Great Little General Purpose Computer

First impression: My first impression was the packaging. I’m an IT engineer and use Dell a lot. All their commercial computers are packaged very well, and their residential line is no different. After opening the box, the first thing you see is a cardboard tray holding the keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Under that is the computer securely packaged and protected by large foam pieces. The computer is a mid-sized desktop with an attractive front. And I was shocked to see a DVD player (actually a writer). I haven’t used one in years, but looking at the target consumer, it makes since. And I was very happy to see built in support for both HDMI and DP monitor cables. Specifications: The specifications are good for a mid-level, general purpose. My computer arrived with the following: • Intel 13th Generation 4.6 GHz Core i5 13400 • 500GB NVMe drive. • 8GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM • Intel UHD Graphics 730 graphics card • Dell generic Keyboard and mouse combo. Setup: Setup was just like any Windows 11 setup; I simply followed the Windows 11 initial setup wizard and connected it with my Microsoft account. It came with Windows 11 22H2 already installed, which is nice. It had the typical 50+ updates that needed to be done, and that took about 20 minutes. This was running over a Wi-Fi 5 network. Performance: The performance of the Dell Inspiron 3020 is as expected with the specs of this computer. I ran a bunch of benchmark tests, and the numbers weren’t great. I decided not to show the screenshots because I thought it might unfairly represent the computer. We have to remember that benchmarks are really for performance computers, and this is not a performance computer. But then again, it never claims to be one either. It is a really good general-purpose computer. I found the response of the computer relatively fast, much faster than my Dell business laptop loaded with agents. Opening documents is fast, as are opening programs, most likely because of the SSD. Business programs operate at a good speed. The included keyboard and mouse are pretty good, especially the keyboard. I am a 2-finger typist, and the larger keys make it easier for me to type. The mouse is no frills but does everything it is supposed to. Conclusion: I am really impressed with this computer. It’s a really nice computer for a really good price. The performance is really good for a general-purpose computer, it has an attractive mid-sized case, and comes with a DVD writer, which some people might still need. For myself, I am running SDR receiver software on it and it is doing an excellent job. If you need a good general-purpose computer or a family computer, and don’t need gaming-level performance, then I highly recommend the Dell Inspiron 3020 computer.

Basic Workstation, Limited Longevity, Not Gaming

I was looking to add an affordable desktop in my work area in the $500 range and decided to go with Dell. This desktop has very limited features with very limited upgradability to have lasting longevity. However its made well, easy access to motherboard with good cable management. One of the downsides is it comes with tons of bloatware. First thing that's a must is upgrade the RAM otherwise pc operations will be around 90% usage. Setup: Setting up the desktop and running through windows the first time was a breeze. It walks you through each step of the way. Unfortunately the setup does not guide through some of the Dell support software or the intel storage management. Overall its a nice setup walkthrough and easy for anyone who is not tech savvy get though. Hardware: My very first concern is the RAM only being 8GB, at the start it is already running above 80% usage then when you launch basic software or run for a short time it hovers around 90%. This slows down the computer as now its having to use the page file a ton. I strongly recommend spending the extra money to upgrade the RAM. With Windows absorbing so much of the RAM right off the start there is not much room software can play with. The hard drive is a higher end SSD which has some nice read/write speeds. I am glad to see Dell did not go cheap when it comes to the Hard Drive storage. The onboard integrated graphics is enough to run Windows 11 and very basic steam games. It definitely has its limitations and with the type of motherboard its limited at graphics upgrades. This is not a gaming machine at all however will work great for data processing, surfing the net or use as a hub for your network. Software: First thing you will notice is the TONS of bloatware that comes on this machine. The first hour you will be spending is removing all the bloatware in add/remove programs. Its so bad that they have 4 different software version for each language installed. After removing all the bloatware I was able to gain even more hard drive room to software that I need/use on a daily basis. What is impressive is the support software that is installed onto the desktop. I like the Dell Support Assist software that provides a great central hub for optimizing the desktop. Also like it provides a "90 day snapshot" of desktop operations. I recommend using the software to easily keep the desktop in optimized shape. I also enjoyed the Intel Mem / Storage Management, this gives great insight of your SSD as well as ability to setup RAIDs. This has room for becoming a great storage hub for your home network. The Intel graphics command center is very basic which is understandable as the graphics chip is very limited. Still its nice to see the ability to customize the video display. It does have an audio mixer with is nice so if you have good speakers you can really kick out some great sounds. Lastly the machine comes with MacAfee trial which I recommend either keeping up to date or installing another antivirus. Overall this is a very basic setup which is good for average computer usage or those who are on a budget. This works great in the $500 range, as long as it stays within the $500 range I can recommend this desktop.

    Easy to setup/use and lag-free

We’ve owned a lot of desktop PC towers over the years and many of them have been Dells. It’s about time we upgrade though, as it’s been a number of years since we purchased our last one, and its performance is sluggish even when running the most basic of tasks. This Dell Inspiron 3020 is a solid mid-tier option for us as it will be used mostly for internet browsing, email, light word processing, and occasionally media streaming. You will need to provide your own monitor and video cable (HDMI or DisplayPort), however, a basic USB mouse and keyboard are included to get you started. On the front of the machine, the plastic face panel is a grayish blue, dubbed “mist blue” while the rest of the metal casing is matte black. There is a slim, non-motorized DVD+RW drive at the top, power button, SD card reader, mic/headphone combo jack, two USB-A 2.0 ports, one USB-A 3.2, and a USB-C 3.2 port. At the back of the machine are a 3.5mm audio input jack, HDMI output and DisplayPort output, both which can be used simultaneously for dual-monitor support. Below that you have two additional USB-A 2.0 ports, two USB-A 3.2 ports, and the RJ45 Ethernet jack. The PC supports WiFi-AX (WiFi 6) and Bluetooth 5.2 as well. The specs of this machine are decent but neither exceptional nor bare bones. It contains the Intel 13th Gen Core i5-13400 CPU with 10 cores over 16 threads and 2.5 GHz base clock which can be boosted up to 4.6 GHz max. This build also has 8 GB of 3200MHz DDR4 RAM pre-installed using 1 stick and this amount is just fine for casual use. A second RAM slot is left empty for expansion, so if you need more memory you can upgrade to a max of 64 GB of RAM. As built, this PC efficiently handles running multiple processes at the same time and bootup times are quick, nearly instant; for everyday computing tasks, I did not notice a lot of lag or long delays in response time, even when running several programs at once. Setting up the machine took about 15 minutes from start to finish including customizing and logging into Windows. One thing to note is that the integrated graphics, Intel UHD Graphic 730, can only output a max 1080p resolution over HDMI, so if you want higher resolutions, you’ll need to use the DisplayPort connection instead. I was able to select the maximum resolution of 3440x1440 for my QHD OLED monitor via DP. You can access the internal components by removing the right-hand side panel, which is secured using two tool-less thumbscrews for easy access. This panel can also be padlocked or tethered with a Kensington lock for security. Storage-wise the computer has an internal m.2 PCIe SSD with a 512 GB capacity though about 50 GB is used out-of-the-box by pre-installed software and the OS, Windows 11 Home (64-bit). There are no additional M.2 slots on the motherboard, however, I found an additional SATA III data hookup inside as well as three available SATA power connectors, one unoccupied PCI-Ex1 slot, and one open PCI-Ex16 slot, giving you a few options for potential upgrades and additional hardware, as long as you stay within the power limitations of its 180 Watt power supply. The PC comes with free trials of Microsoft Office 365 and McAfee LiveSafe as well, though activating and using them is optional. The tower is pretty quiet when on and doesn’t put out a lot of heat during use. It is ventilated on the back and left-side, so it’s best to keep these areas clear for proper airflow. I found the inclusion of a DVD drive surprising as I haven’t had a need for one in years, but I suppose it’s nice to have as some things still come with software CDs. It’s a very basic drive slot though, with a spring loaded tray that you push back in, similar to one you’d find in a laptop. The USB mouse and keyboard can be connected to either the USB 2.0 on the front or back, and I recommend reserving the four high speed USB ports for charging devices and connecting external drives for faster data transfers. I especially like the USB-C port in front, as this is an increasingly common connection type for newer devices. Overall, this computer met my performance expectations for a current generation consumer PC. The included keyboard has an integrated number pad and is thin and lightweight with fairly quiet keys. The optical mouse is also lightweight and plasticky, but does have a clickable scroll wheel and works just fine. This PC’s build has sufficient specs to tackle everyday computing tasks and would be suitable for most personal and home office uses. It can also handle casual gaming and light media consumption if you’re not looking for maxed out visuals and performance, but it might struggle with heavy task loads for creative or technical work that requires a lot of video/image processing or 3D rendering.

For those who still prefer a desktop, as opposed to a laptop, this desktop is an excellent option for people looking for a workhorse when it comes to business/office related tasks. If you’re looking for a desktop for heavy gaming use, then there are going to be more fitting options out there. This desktop models all of the advantages of a desktop versus a laptop with the impressive amount of included data ports, a disc drive, and plenty of space/room for future upgrades. I like that the built-in data ports include both newer and older styles, such as the display port and hdmi port along with usb-c and usb-b ports. This is definitely an advantage to laptops due to the limited space for included built-in ports on laptops. (My slightly older laptop already requires adapters to allow plug connections to newer monitors.) While the body of this desktop still seems a bit large, it is noticeable smaller than an older desktop I own, especially considering that it still includes a disc drive. One disappointment I had with this desktop is that the included keyboard and mouse were not wireless. I feel like with this modern era of technology, and the price of this desktop, the included accessories should be wireless. While disappointed with the included wired accessories, I also appreciate (and prefer) that this is a stand alone desktop and not all-in-one desktop. I also like that a monitor is not included with the desktop, allowing me to use a much higher quality monitor than what would have likely been provided with the desktop. This is also an advantage for those who are looking for a more economical option, by either using a cheaper monitor or one they already own. This desktop is built to last and be upgraded through the years, and likely would out live most monitors and accessories. When in use, the first thing I noticed with this desktop is how quiet it is. Even when running multiple programs I never heard a peep from it – it is QUIET. The wifi on the desktop is excellent and I had no problems when initially connecting to my home wifi, and I never experienced any connectivity issues when in use. I also didn’t notice any lag with the desktop connected to the wifi either. (It ran as smoothly as my laptop.) The computer opens and runs programs quickly, and streams high quality content seamlessly. To me, one of the coolest features of the new Windows 11 is the phone link app. This allows you to link up your phone with the desktop, allowing full control of your phone from the desktop. This adds a modern touch to the desktop and is very convenient for transferring photos/videos from your phone to your desktop. Overall, I would definitely recommend this desktop for the home office or for someone who is looking for longevity versus the mobility of a laptop. This is a solid performing desktop with the capability to last for many years.

The Dell - Inspiron 3020 Desktop - 13th Gen Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory is exactly as expected... An entry level, solid workstation for most homework, web browsing, spreadsheets and other basic processing. While you may be able to limp along at 30 fps playing Far Cry 6, it's not going to be nearly as rewaring as playing on a true gamer. That said, this PC does other things well. Tech spec stuff... The processer is Intel 13th Generation Core i5. As mentioned, it's a decent processor, not great but pretty good. The hard drive is a relatively small at 515 gig, but it is an SSD. It can ramp up faster than standard disc drives. And while it is small, in today's world there is so much streaming and cloud based file managememnt that the 512 is not really that restrictive. And if you od need more strage, portable drives are a great, relatively cheap option. For memory, it has 8 gig's. A few years ago, that would have been great. In todays world, it's near the minimum. It will allow you to multi-task most day-to-day items. And it's another easy upgrade if you shoose to. The graphics card in an Intel UHD 730. Good, not great The PC comes with the mini-tower, a wired mouse and a wired keyboard. I understand that its an entry level PC but thankfully I had several wireless peripherals. That was the first immediate upgrade I made. End of the day, this is a decent choice for your basic desktop setup. A big time gamer or heavy process user wouldn't consider this PC, so that's not a knock. It's just what it is. Decent machine, for a decent price.

Good deal for my sister though prefer self build

My sister hadn't bought a computer for some time, though I prefer to build one myself, I wonder if I could for the price. Anyhow, this is similar to one I'd build for myself, with the I5-13400 and even comes with an optical drive (we both still have original software on optical media). I considered a mini-pc for her, the prices are attractive, but those aren't too expandable, don't have any pci-e slots. This has 2 slots, not many but more than zero that the mini-pc would have had. What I'd prefer (though I know that all major desktop makers are doing the same) would have been standard instead of proprietary parts, primarily the power supply, but also the motherboard. I guess you can try to find a higher wattage power supply, but I'd prefer being able to buy a "universal" PC power supply at just about any computer retailer in town instead of waiting for a proprietary one to come in the mail. Also, I'm not wild about the packaging, there seems to be only 1 available place to add a 3.5 inch hard disk and 1 available SATA connection on the planar (and 1 available SATA power connector). Even with the limited power supply, this is a tower and physically should be able to hold at least a few more drives especially considering the modest 512GB NVME drive. It comes with a single 8GB DDR4 DIMM, which is OK given the price; there's another available slot if you want to add RAM. Unless you can find a higher wattage power supply, forget about adding a graphics adapter. My sister isn't a gamer (neither am I) but some might think about adding a graphics card, the stock power supply has low wattage so unless you find one that has very modest power demands, you won't be able to do so. Laptops are even worse...I'm spoiled with my 2011 vintage HP, which I've replaced the processor, added RAM, changed out the NVRAM battery (as well as the service battery) replaced just about everything (including the motherboard, when I wasn't able to reflash the firmware, the flash module went bad). I know people like sleek laptops but I prefer more serviceable ones of a decade ago. I live in the next town south from Dell HQ but doubt I could get parts quickly despite my proximity. Back in 1985 I went to a drive up window at PC's Limited to buy a 30MB disk drive with a Xebec controller card (which handled both 320kb floppy drive and the hard disk) for my IBM PC (which only had two 5 1/4 floppy drives). PC's Limited wasn't yet in business when I originally bought it.

Review of Dell - Inspiron 3020 Desktop - 13th Gen Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - Intel UHD Graphics 730 - 512GB SSD - Mist Blue The Inspiron 3020 Desktop in Mist Blue color, consisting of Intel Core i5 13th Gen, with 8GB, Intel UHD Graphics 730, and 512 SSD is a basic hardware configuration but packed with latest connectivity and numerous ports. The package incudes wired keyboard and mouse. The desktop has 1 HDMI output, 4 USB 2.0 Type A, 3 USB 3.2 Type A, 1 USB 3.2 Type C ports,1 Display Port, Ethernet Port. It comes with Wireless A-X and Bluetooth. Its OS is Windows 11 Home, and enough for non heavy work for editing documents and images, multiple excel windows in parallel while playing. Connecting the hardware is as usual, and starting the the OS as turn on is the traditional Windows steps for new desktop. Once up and running, able to switch the connection between ethernet and wireless, and the numerous usb port distributed between front and back helped to connect distinct external hardwares like hard disk and memory sticks, and streaming usb sticks. Not sure if it exactly the color and how the hardware look, but it feels elegant and clean feeling once setup and placed on the desk. Although this might not be the key aspect to consider, but add up to everything it does. In bottom line, it is easy to have it up and running and fast for non heavy work like editing large sized file of images. And suffice for the purpose of entertaining and and editing documents and simple image files.

Great mid grade PC... Just like all PCs set up is a bit of a pain. Downloading all current updates for Microsoft and Dell drivers etc is always my dread. This process took up about 2 hours of my time. But I plugged through it and managed to watch a few movies in between checking on it. After that I was all set up and could bench mark it and push it. Benchmark data came back as specified. So no issues there. I ran both wired and wireless network connections. Wired I was pushing near my Gig service threshold so that's good. Wifi I was pulling at 500 MB up and down... Not bad .. This system came with a solid state HDD. This is great .... The disk HDD are so noisy... Transfer speeds to Solid state HDD and USB ports was quick.... This system came just in time. My old Dell XPS died and I needed another desktop to replace it. Not the same 1 to 1 because my previous system was geared towards gaming but for what I needed on a desktop PC this Inspiron worked just fine... Note.... The motherboard can take a graphics card BUat the given power supply will NOT power it up... Especially a PCI express card... I tried to install one but no dice... Anyway for light gaming, business work, video viewing, internet, streaming this PC will do you just fine... Connections are good Multiple USB ports. USB C. SD Slot. HDMI and Dport. I did not try to run 2 monitors using Dport and HDMI. I would image it would do it with the onboard graphics controller. DVD/CD player. Bluetooth... Came with keyboard, mouse, power cord and mini tower PC. You need to buy everything else. If you are looking for a medium built PC I would recommend this to you and for the price and the name brad of Dell I would recommend this product.

This Dell Inspiron desktop computer is very compact and extremely easy to set up. Its size makes it convenient to sit on top of the desk or even a kitchen table, yet easy to move. It measures about 13" x 11.5" x 6". Although small - it has a ton of ports! Seven regular USB ports (2.0 and 3.2), HDMI, ethernet, sound, a USB-C port and even an SD card slot. I like having a basic wired mouse and keyboard since I want to minimize Wi-Fi interference. What I'm really impressed with is the speed at startup and loading and running apps. I'm using mostly Microsoft Office and online apps, but it can run video editing downloaded software as well. For everyday use, and at the price point, this computer is hard to beat. It is a basic desktop and probably would not be the best for gaming. For most people who do not need special graphics or enormous RAM or disk space, however, it is so functional, with all the ports, compact size and fast-processing speed (although the graphics for online design of brochures and ads is definitely more than adequate). This is a simple yet robust computer.

The Dell Inspiron 3020 is a budget-friendly desktop computer that offers decent performance for everyday tasks. With its compact design and affordable price point, it aims to cater to users who require a reliable machine for basic computing needs.  One of the standout features of the Inspiron 3020 is its compact form factor. It's designed to fit into tight spaces, making it ideal for small offices or dorm rooms. The build quality is solid, and the overall design is simple yet sleek. In terms of performance, the Inspiron 3020 is powered by an Intel Core processor, which provides enough processing power for everyday tasks such as web browsing, word processing, and multimedia consumption. While it may struggle with more demanding applications or heavy multitasking, it performs admirably for its price range. The included storage capacity is adequate for most users, but it would have been nice to have more room for storing files and applications. However, the presence of multiple USB ports and an SD card reader allows for easy expansion and data transfer. On the connectivity front, the Inspiron 3020 offers a good range of options. It includes USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and VGA outputs for external displays, as well as Ethernet and Wi-Fi capabilities. This ensures flexibility when it comes to connecting peripherals and accessing the internet. Overall, the Dell Inspiron 3020 is a solid-budget desktop computer that provides reliable performance for everyday tasks. Its compact size, affordability, and decent specifications make it a suitable option.
