I use my netbook primarily for novel writing. I love the portability- no laptop to drag around anymore. I can take it just about anywhere and have HOURS of typing without having to find a wall plug. I found if you set it on the best level of energy conservation that you can get over 10 hours of battery life in just one charge. It's alarmingly light, but no complaints here! You can pick it up with 3 fingers! And I bought a Case Logic "purse" as I call it so I can slide it in and off I go. If I'm going to be gone less than 8 hours, I don't even pack the charge cord.
The only dislikes was Windows 7 starter- can't do a darn thing with that. I immediately upgraded to W7 Home Premium and installed Office 2007 on it. And the outer case is shiny and smooth and shows every finger print (no biggie really). I could care less about it being white on the bottom, that wasn't a factor for me. And I can't figure out how to turn off Windows Messenger from the start up menu. Just annoying, that's all.
Overall, I love my little toy. And since we have all the other computers at home on W7, I can homegroup and transfer data back and forth between all of them. I was using a thumb drive until I got my laptop on W7. This was a excellent early birthday present from my hubby! Love it!

i needed a computer for class to run quickbooks 2009 pro and that was inexpensive, portable, and from a brand name i could trust. this little dynamo fit the bill perfectly.
now i take it to class and run quickbooks, do my homework in the library, surf the web, all in one charge - with some left over.
plug in an external monitor and would never guess so much power comes from such a small computer.
can't wait to upgrade the memory.

So I bought this netbook because my previous laptop crashed and I can't be without a system due to school. I was planning on this tiding me over until I ordered a full size notebook from Dell, but I'm in LOVE! This system is made to be carried. It's so light weight and just the right size to go in a bag without it being a bulky computer bag. I take this everywhere. It's also a lot faster than I was expecting. This system is almost as fast as my previous laptop that had 4gb memory. I am going to upgrade to 2gb and I am sure I'll be faster than I will ever need. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it isn't a full size keyboard, but no netbook is. It took some time to get used to because I don't type the conventional way. LOVE LOVE LOVE it though.

Perfect for Me

This netbook is very light and small. Goes anywhere easily. Performance is great and display is very clear and crisp. This netbook fits my needs perfectly. I use it for quick look-ups, games and when on the go. I have had no problem with the Windows 7 Starter, as I usually only run one or two programs when working with the netbook anyway. Don't really notice that the keyboard is a bit smaller than the standard keyboard. Although, if you are doing a lot of intensive work, I would go with a larger laptop, or desktop. I would say not good for trying to run a business or getting through college/high school. But great for the fun stuff, or on the go.

I picked this up on April 10th to serve as a backup to my work lap top, which dies with scary frequency. It's a panasonic toughbook which has experienced 3 major crashes since July 2008. This seems to do the trick. I need a back up/travel machine that can handle LARGE MS-Word files. so far so good.
I did have to add more RAM (to 2 gigs), upgraded from Windows 7 Starter, which was just ugly (Home premium seems to do the trick), STRIPPED OUT Windows Live (which is a memory pig and annoying), Stripped out MS Works and installed MS Office (2007-Enterprise). Toss in a wireless mouse (the trackpad IS terrible) and I'm a very happy camper. Best $500 I've spent in a long, long time.

I bought this netbook to upgrade to a more mobile solution and got a much better pc than i expected. First thing I did was upgrade windows starter to Home Premium, then upgraded the memory from 1gb to 2gb, Although i did not see a speed increase just the ability to run more programs at one time. Dell does not have good support for this excellent pc Unfortunately and I had to do lots of research to find what kind of memory went into it. (DDR2 5300 or DDR2 6400 200pin laptop memory).
The touch mouse is small and can be difficult to use with programs that require more accuracy. The keyboard feels very good.
Webcam works great. It does not state that it comes with a Mic, but It does have one.
SD cards do not push in and click so cards do stick out about 1/4" on left hand side.
The display is very bright with 256mb of video memory. I was supprised to see this amount of video ram in a computer this small, but it looks great.
I also learned that in the Atom 450, Intel combined the video processor with the CPU, which increases the overall performance and they did something right with this netbook.
I would recommend this to anyone. although I believe that this machine should come with windows 7 home premium and 2gbs of memory. which puts the final price of this machine at $500 with all the upgrades.

first of all its so convenient to carry around because i'm college student. I did a big mistake earlier buying big laptop which is very heavy. this has a around 8hrs of battery life on one charge. HD display though its small. I wish it ran on some other platform like XP. windows 7 is ok but i think its more appropriate for a powerful computer. i totally recommend it.

I wantedsomething to take with me on the bus to check emails, do some light work etc but did not want a full blown laptop because of the weight and cost. This seemed the ideal way to go. I was right. Slips easily into my backpack and does't add much weight which is good at my age (over 50).
I went for the longer battery life and really appreciate that since I can be out and about all day.
The only problem I have is sometimes it will suddenly slow way down for no apparent reason. Video will hang up etc. I'm going to upgrade to 2G memory and see if that solves the problem.

Great little Net Book. It took me a long time to decide which one to get and I am very happy I chose this one. The keypad is very nice and large, and it is the perfect weight. I love everything on it and it is very easy to use. One thing that is not so great on it is that you can not tilt the screen back as far as I want because there is an inch of extra computer/base hanging off the back. It is not a big deal to me though. The screen is very nice and it was very easy to set up and I am not very computer savy. I deffinately recommend! I'm very happy with this purchase!

I own a small business with 95% of its sales online, so being able to work from anywhere is very important to me, but sometimes my Blackberry is just too limiting to be useful. My Dell Vostro laptop is my main computer, but it's too big and heavy to tote around regularly, plus I don't like carrying around a computer with sensitive business details, client information, etc.
I'd always thought netbooks were too small to be useful, but after a glowing recommendation from a friend who owns one, I started looking into them. For the money, I am very pleased with this purchase, and pleasantly surprised with its performance.
POSITIVES: very lightweight and portable, slips easily and neatly into a tote or medium/large handbag. Buy a sleeve to protect it from dents, dings, and drops, and you're good to go. It wakes up from hibernation and is ready to use very quickly. So far the battery life has been wonderful.
Performance is snappy, especially after removing the trial McAfee software (I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials). Detects and connects to even weak wifi signals very quickly, loads programs in a snap. So far watching video (YouTube and Netflix) have been very smooth and enjoyable although the sound is a little tinny...I wasn't expecting AMAZING sound on a netbook but I was a little disappointed in the quality with my earbuds plugged in.
NEGATIVES: Granted I'm used to working on a laptop with its own cooling fans (in addition to using a cooling deck) but I was genuinely shocked at how hot this netbook gets during prolonged/heavy usage. Not "noticeably warm," I mean HOT. Hot enough that it became uncomfortable to use even on my lapdesk, and when I placed my palm against the bottom and then the keypad...wow! Not hot enough to leave a mark, but definitely hot enough to make me put it down for a while...it just became too distracting to use.
I can definitely understand how the trackpad/mouseclick issues mentioned in other reviews here would be maddening, but it hasn't been too big of an issue for me...I tend to click the mouse by tapping anywhere on the touchpad, not one particular corner, so this hasn't bothered me too much. The location of the touchpad so close to the spacebar has meant I've accidentally brushed it with my thumbs and inadvertently highlighted large areas of whatever I was working on, but it's a netbook...space is tight. I'll probably buy a miniature optical mouse for when I go on the road and know I'll be using it for extended periods of time and switching back and forth between programs frequently.
Finally, the dreaded Windows 7 starter...I was very nervous about Windows 7 in general, being an XP user, but so far the Windows 7 experience hasn't been too bad. The dock at the top is handy, and I look forward to some of the other features they advertise when I upgrade from the starter. THAT SAID...I agree with other reviewers who say the base price on this item should just be increased to come with standard Windows 7...I knew from reading in advance that this came with a starter, and will be upgrading later when I have the spare cash, but the very fact that you HAVE to upgrade to fully unlock the functionality of this computer is very irksome. I'm not as concerned about customizing my wallpaper as being able to quickly snap back and forth between programs, etc. Big thumbs-down on the money-grab tactic.
OVERALL, I'm VERY pleased with this purchase...I'm able to work on anything from documents to store updates on the go (especially with wifi available practically everywhere, including McDonalds in a pinch!) then transfer the data via flash drive to my main laptop. I still have functionality and workability while maintaining convenience and (so far) reliability. I would definitely recommend this netbook.

The size and weight are great. I do a lot of travel so carring around a bigger PC got to be a pain. I am going to upgrade the ram fomr 1 gb to 2 gb, that should help with the speed because with 1 gb it is a little slow, other than that it is a great machine.

I got this to use, instead of my old laptop that goes black on me constantly, for surfing the web, and I'm glad! I was immediately impressed by how fast it is. I just started using Google Chrome over Internet Explorer and it runs even faster. I wasn't sure how I'd adjust to the smaller size, but I prefer it. Overall, I am thrilled with the product!

I bought this netbook a couple of weeks ago and love it. I am a college student and use it at school all the time. It is so light-weight that it fits perfectly in my backpack. The mouse touchpad and keyboard are easy to use. The battery life is amazing, lasts me all day at school without having to plug it in. Doesn't take too long to charge it back up either.

Dell Mini Notebook

The Dell mini Notebook is very good for people who travel and need to take their computer with them. You will be able to go through security much faster and can use it while waiting for the plane. It has one of the only batteries that will allow you to use it without having to plug it in so you don't have the battery go dead in the middle of you trying to finish a report and end up having to re-do the entire thing.
It would be a good idea to up grade the ram to 2GB for a faster coumputer.

The only negative I can find is that the computer didn't include a anti virus/security software program. Considering that this computer is perfect for email and surfing the net, this should be included in the package. It is small and compact and provides plenty of hard drive (250 gig) and the 1 gig of RAM is sufficient for it's intended use. I don't use it for mobile so I can't speak to how it works for that. Overall a good computer.

Awesome Netbook

I really like this netbook; I bought it to replace a full sized laptop, and I'm taking to is nicely.
I really like the build quality of it; it doesn't feel cheep like an Asus eee pc (which my dad has), and the keyboard is extremely sturdy. The screen it very high quality, however i would prefer a 1366x768 screen, but this one is very clear and of really good quality.
My only complaints so far are the fact that it has Windows 7 Starter, which does not have either aero, screensavers, or even the ability to change the background. I personally find this a bit idiotic, because to do those things, you have to pay 80$ for an upgrade, which I think I will be buying sometime soon. I also don't like the fact that (like most netbooks) there is only 1 GB of RAM, which works, but Dell could have made it better by adding another gigabyte in there for an extra 30$, 40$, or maybe even 50$.
Overall, I think this is an excellent computer, and would highly recommend it to anyone using the internet, word processing, or any other basic computing tasks.

Great little computer for travel

I bought this Dell mini to take with me when I travel for pleasure, primarily to be able to connect to the internet and to have e-mail access. The first machine I picked up, refused to allow me to log on after about three days of use. Best Buy replaced it. The second piece of equipment operates fairly well, except for one troublesome feature to be noted below.
For such a small computer, this Dell is relatively fast, has a very good screen and does everything I need. I recently spent two weeks running around Turkey and found the mini was convenient to tote and functioned reliably. I downloaded and stored digital photos and the speed of download and the quality of the pictures on the screen were great. The only negative I have seen is rather annoying and is probably associated with the Microsoft 7 operating system. About every third time I start up the computer, either the user profile fails to load or I am "denied access." Both of these failures require a reboot. The first mini (i.e. the one I returned) had the same problem and then failed to boot after successive tries. I hope that the annoying booting problem on this computer isn't a harbinger of future failure.

The Dell Inspiron netbook computer is doing exactly what I had hoped it would. It has more than enough processing power for what I looking for it to do, it hooks up just about anywhere and is extremely convenient. The battery life is outstanding, nearly 8 hours consistently. And the value for the price is outstanding. You just can't beat it.

Great Little Netbook at a Great Price

This is my first netbook but one of many Dell computers. This little netbook is great for travel. I travel via motorcycle a great deal and this unit fits right in. The PC operates as described. Probably needs more RAM but that is easily rectified with an additional Gig.
