Good spacious sound, plenty loud for a home theater, but the remote is not backlit, and feels cheap. Overall I would buy it again. I got it to go with an LG Cx 77” tv anticipating I might some day be able to buy a PS5 and take advantage of the features.

The Denon X3700H has been great so far. I have had in only one month but it has performed as advertised. It is the piece of equipment that I use to watch TV, play music, stream from Roku, and play games (PS5). I have been a Denon user for quite some time so the setup for me was relatively easy. In fact it was much easier than my previous AVR. I still have some features to explore and I may make some changes to my setup but out of the box it is more than satisfactory. I have a 7.1 setup at the moment and I used the included microphone to set up the speakers. 4K 120Hz from the PS5 is working great using the 8K input. All of my other 4K inputs are working just fine. I am outputting to a new Samsung OLED. The AVR did a software update out of the box and it had no issues.

Great punch with a few disappointments

First, I am not a videophile, I won't be able to speak for pass through quality. I’m a Plasma guy and I haven’t gotten used to the super high definition of LED. In general the tuner passes good warm video and I haven’t noticed anything that would stand out as concerning, I have a Panasonic 60” Plasma which is warm and has a great picture from all sitting positions. Regarding my expectations of the Receiver, I expect a brand who touts technology to be advanced in terms of interface to come through in truth, not just advertising. None of this "you have to be a software expert for this to work right" stuff. I am upgrading from a Denon AVR-991 which is 2010 technology. It was (and is) a great receiver and had very advanced features, some of which are not supported on newer devices, examples include Ipod wired interface from the USB port & Pandora direct stream. I am still impressed with its functionality but I thought it was time to see what these new (lower powered) receivers can do. I was hesitant because I was going down in Watts but allegedly up in punch and clarity. I will give my observations on Setup, Ease of configuration and Sound (what my ears say). First, Initial setup was very easy; actually it was painfully slow and brain numbing. I’m sure I could have skipped some of it but I had no idea what they are going to be setting. (this will come up a few times as it relates to not having a manual). The initial setup was like a guided tour which I will never want to endure again. I certainly hope someone buying a Receiver of this caliber doesn't need to be told to strip the insulation off the wires but Denon seems to think so. After verifying settings they take you right into Audyssey setup. Oh, don’t forget to plug the microphone in. duh. I don't like the concept of Online-only manual. This is costing a portion of a star. It's a pain because you are trying to do something while looking at the manual, head behind the receiver, and then the Ipad goes to sleep. I just want a manual. Plus, where will I find the manual in 5 years. I suppose I can pay to have it printed and bound. While the documentation leaves a lot to be desired they did a lot of cleanup on setting up Zone 2. That was a challenge on my previous model. The 3700 recognized which ports speakers are plugged in and made some assumptions about their settings, including Zone 2. The really great news about Zone 2 is that you have tone control and that makes a huge difference to my outdoor speakers that used to sound flat. Also, a huge gain is that I was playing Zone 2 within 10 minutes of initial setup, it just worked. Press Zone 2 then power and it came on. Audyssey, once again the initial tone and impact of the setup was strong but left me struggling to hear center channel. Some say we should purchase the $20 app to have advanced control....the app that only gets 2 stars! Hmmm. I'm not warm and fuzzy about that yet. I am running DefTec BP9060 mains with a CS9060 center. Surrounds are simple in-ceiling 6” speakers. I am also subsidizing bass with a basic 10” sub at the back of the room. After running Audyssey again I noticed it was close but notably different in tone, but the center channel is still very muted, almost like everyone is talking into a box. To be honest, this is driving me nuts. I verified polarity and connections. I turned up the Center to +2.5 and now it’s like people in a cardboard box are yelling in the room. I’m struggling here. After doing some reading I keep finding reference to this app that lets you make advanced adjustments. But before I do that I want to be sure I didn’t mess something up so I connected my AVR991 back up and viola, crisp and clear center channel, just like people are in the same room talking. I’m sending a note to Denon because this is not sustainable or acceptable. Regarding the apps: There are two apps, the free Denon Remote app that lets you control what you are listening to; zone, volume, etc. Then there is an advanced app that costs $20 that allegedly lets you dial in more advanced settings. It gets a 2-star rating but advanced users say it is necessary. Airplay works great (and it worked well on my older model) as such I didn’t expect anything different. My beef is that they don’t support plugging an Apple device into the front USB port (charge and play through wire). Yes, I still use an Ipod classic and it doesn’t have Wifi so it cannot Airplay. I can plug it into an RCA pair on the back and play it there but it was so easy before, just plug your ipod into the usb cable, press the Ipod button and it played the Ipod and kept it charged. Sometimes you want to plug your phone in and charge while streaming music or if your wireless network is having issues you just want to use a wire. I took a portion of a star for not supporting old-school. I mean really, the USB port supports reading files on flashdrive? Is that something anyone does? As for configuration, there weren’t any big surprises here. Navigation is surely easier than the old menu structure. Audyssey did a good job of getting settings in the ballpark. I have always felt like it sets the center speaker too low and I strain to hear vocals and I typically increase center speaker +1 or +2 from where Audyssee starts but I am still struggling to figure out why my Center channel sounds more muted than on my older unit which was crisp and clear. After initial setup you can even go into settings and see a view of ports on the back and it will show you which ones have speakers connected. This might help in the rare occasion that you connect something incorrectly. Sound: This is where you find yourself asking some questions about Watts. We have heard a dozen times that more watts don’t equate better sound. This certainly holds true here. Most of the speakers in use are not pulling a ton of watts (Mains, Center and surround). All of the subs are running from LFE and are self-powered and the towers themselves are set to Small. The punch and clarity in music is a notable improvement. The bass is better defined even though the receiver isn’t powering them. The audio rolls out of this unit through the speakers that effortlessly drop the (bass heavy) sounds right into your lap. On my unit, all vocals on center channel have a baritone voice and if the origination signal doesn’t have a strong center channel track this unit has a hard time picking out the vocals and sending them to the Center speaker. It is often difficult to hear what people are saying. The previous model did a better job of selecting which format of audio worked better based on the input signal. Regarding Bluetooth. There is an issue here and I spent a little time researching which leaves me deflated. I bound my Bose Quietcomfort headphones to the built in Bluetooth and the sound clarity is fine. HOWEVER (yes upper case for the first time) the audio sync is off when you watch television or a movie which is further impacted by the fact that you cannot adjust the Sync while using Bluetooth. You can adjust sync for speaker but not with Bluetooth audio. I have to be honest, this concerns me greatly since Denon is trying to sell you Heos wireless technology in a BIG way. Will those speakers be out of sync too? Believe it or not, one of the proposed solutions is to buy an aftermarket Bluetooth transmitter. Now, what was I saying before about supporting old-school? I guess they didn’t get the memo on which old-school makes sense. The Good: As I mentioned before the menu structure is far better than before. You can actually find settings. The remote control feels cheap, many of the quick buttons like “Input level” are gone. Now you have to go into the menu structure. They only have a Sat/CBL button and HDMI port, there is no dedicated DVR input. This was always handy for guests who don’t understand the system setup. Press the DVR button and you get the DVR. I haven’t tried the built in Phono preamp because I use a tube pre-amp connected it to the Game inputs. There don’t appear to be any changes. The Concerning: Center Channel: I’m not sure what is going on yet. While writing this I heard back from Denon who pretty much said I tried everything and they suggested I do a complete reset to factory setting and they included the steps in the email. Back to square one I guess. It’s concerning because if you go listen to the tuner at a store they bombard you with a bass heavy movie sample…which this AVR does so wonderfully. Is it possible the entire system is bass focused? Heos. Sorry, 2 stars at best. It is a great concept but it is not very fluid. Some functions work better using the AVR remote, some functions work better using an Ipad. This leaves you sitting with ipad in your lap and remote in your hand trying to make something play from where you want. Getting Internet radio to play is Favorites reliant unless you have time to search the hard way every time. Again, there is no manual to guide, so how would you know? What will Denon do if Heos flat out fails? Same as happened with my AVR-991 where they simply stopped supporting Pandora and never told anyone? Zone 2: I mentioned that getting Z2 set up is much better than older model, this is true. However, one quirky thing has been happening when Zone 1 is listening to Apple Airplay, if I use the app to change Zone 2 to a station on Heos it often changes Zone 1 along with it. Then you have to go back to Zone 1 and try to hijack it back to Airplay. What is strange is that the iphone still thinks it is streaming to the Receiver so you have to change Zone 1 to something completely different then start Airplay again. This has turned into a dissertation so in summary I give 4 stars until/if they can fix Bluetooth sync issues. This is the stuff that they list in ads as an advanced feature that simply doesn’t work. Why build in Bluetooth support at all? I wish they supported Ipod play and lastly I just want a paper man

Ok so straight from the register Im excited and sick too my stomache at the same time after dropping $1500 on a suround reciever. This thing is heavy! Got it home and slowly and carefully unboxed placing it near my soon to be replaced pioneer elite. Wire for wire change for the speakers and here we go. Im running definitive technologies home cinema 6000 speakers with 14 guage wire, and gold plug ins. Using an xbox one x series, and an epson ef12 projector running in 4k HDR10. Load up Avengers end game and crank it up. Sound was so intense, crisp, and clear that it gave me anxiety. The bass was hitting me directly in the chest, and the highs were piercing my ear drums. The mids flow with some nice punch to bring it all together. No distortion at all. The picture on the screen is so much sharper, and the is no tearing. This unit is wort every dime. There is literally nothing I can say to explain the experience. Just get one! Do it now! Hook it up! Mess with it to get everything just rite, and realize you will never need a theater again. This system accurately replaces the need to go to the cinema.

The receiver has been excellent. Easy to setup if you know what you are doing. Great sound and picture quality. Gaming at 120 fps on the Xbox Series X while running 5.2.4 is just devine. Make sure you have adequate ventilation as it does get warm.

This replaces a 10+ year old receiver of another brand that developed HDMI switching problems. Wow! What an improvement. Clearer dialogue, wider and deeper soundstage. Main channels are Legacy Classics (4 ohm) . No problems. And I have yet to use Audessey to fine tune for my room. I am just absolutely pleased with my purchase!

Amazing receiver! Started out with the AVR-X2600H but decided that I need to spring more for what this model offered to get Dolby ATMOS support with Zone 2. Amazing sound, very easy to use and setup. A big upgrade from my 10 year old Onkyo. Very impressed with Denon products.

Love this receiver. Wish it was 13.2, but I use small external amp for the 2 additional channels in my 4-speaker Atmos setup. Sounds awesome paired with all my Klipsch speakers. Had to buy an AC Infinity cooler for the top of the receiver, because it runs VERY hot. All in all, I'm a happy camper.

Bought this so I could hook up a 5.2.4 system. My old Denon worked well for it's time. Just was lacking the capabilities of today's time. Got my new Sony x95k 85" hooked up along with 4 new Atmos ceiling speakers installed. Was thrilled to see what this AVR was going to do. And..... Nothing! A total brick. Tried every outlet, tried multiple different power cords. Nothing. Talk about disappointment. Had to hook my old AVR back up. Took back to Bestbuy and paid $46 for express shipping and replacement arrived just in time before I went back to work for a couple weeks. New AVR was a breeze to hook up and was able to watch a movie before work. System sounded amazing. So either the original got dropped ( no damage to the box) or the quality control is pretty awful. Regardless still happy with my purchase and will spend a lot more time with it when I'm home .

I did a lot of research and found this to be the reciever I wanted, and it has few needless bell-and-whistles. The menu layout is very intuitive as well as having illustrations if needed. You can be a true rookie at connecting your speakers and (dvd player, CD, cable / satellite, etc) and this can take you step by step to get it done. The audyssey calibration is equally simple and the X3700H also allows for manual calibration. One slight drawback: if you want to tweak a calibration that audyssey did (with the exception of the sub-woofer and I think the center channel too), you have to write down your speaker settings (distance and decibels) then head over to manual calibration, and go from there. I will be installing more speakers soon for a 5.2.4 setup. The reciever can handle 2 more but I will hold on that for now. Very happy with this unit!!

Purchased unit two days ago. Initial experience has been great so far. Connections/set-up very easy. Built-in program walks you through everything including calibration of speakers. Includes a nice app on my iPhone to control receiver features. No need to pay someone to set the receiver up for you. As for use, I streamed about 10 movies to date. The system sounds fantastic. Upgraded from a Pioneer Elite receiver and I can honestly say that movies never sounded this good. The surround sound is robust. Sad I didn’t have enough speakers to take full advantage of the devices capabilities ( but I soon will). Pairs well with my 55” Sony OLED. Unbelievable sound to match an unbelievable Picture. No regrets. For the money, many top features to keep the receiver relevant for some time to come. Can’t say it’s the best, but hard to believe there is anything else appreciably better for the money.
