I can recall Denon equipment back in the 70s and 80s, when I owned stereo rack systems. Back then, most people owned equipment from the larger, more well-known companies (some of whom still exist today). However the slightly more sophisticated audiophile opted for higher end equipment from the likes of Denon, Carver, Luxman, etc.
Denon’s sound quality still remains high with this D-M41S Personal Component System. Right out of the box, the first thing you notice is the weight of each component. The receiver and two speakers are each quite hefty, considering their smallish size. It is an attractive system to boot. The Denon sound quality is as rich as I remember from decades ago.
There is a lot to like about this system, and there are some things I’m not wild about. Let’s start with the mini surfboard that they call a remote control. The remote is HUGE! It is, without hyperbole, the largest remote control in my house. The remote is nearly as tall as the speakers (Mini stereo; massive remote. Makes perfect sense <wryly>...) Many of the buttons on this remote you probably won’t use, and some actually serve no function at all; but I guess they had to fill all that SPACE on the remote with something. Ironically, with such a large remote, there’s no eject button on it (they could have included it instead of the functionless DAB/RDS button).
My biggest gripe with this unit is the lack of compatibility with some of your CD-R/RW discs. Unless your disc was burned using the ISO 9660 level-1 format, it won’t play (sorry UDF compatible users, you’d better update your equipment/firmware). The unit didn’t read ANY of the discs I burned on my older (soon to be replaced) desktop. If the CD-R you burned doesn’t meet the ISO standard, you’ll hear exactly 2 seconds of a song before it jumps to the next track (on the bright side, you can run through an entire disc in under 30 seconds). C’mon, Denon, even the jankiest, no-name CD players can handle most CD-R formats. Given your high quality reputation, and the high price point of this unit, I expect better. Also, if you’re a fan of CD-Text, as I am, you’ll only get that feature on Mp3 discs. Obviously, commercial CDs played perfectly.
The Bluetooth feature works well, however, the display doesn’t show song titles or artists, it only displays the name of the Bluetooth device you are using. Boring…
The sound and build quality are definitely present in the Denon D-M41S PCS. The bass response is awesome, with no distortion. The midrange and highs are clean and crisp. However, given the price point and reputation of the manufacturer, I expected more bells and whistles from this unit. If those small extras aren’t important to you, or if you only play commercial CDs, then you won’t be disappointed. Even though I’d like to see those features incorporated, I still recommend this system because the sound quality is just that good.
Pros:
- Sound quality
- Quality build
- Variety of input options (Bluetooth, radio, analog…)
- Small size
- Appearance
Cons:
- Ridiculously large remote
- Only reads discs in one format (ISO 9660 level-1)
- Minimal LED display

If you’re looking for compact with a punch

If you are looking for a unit that has a CD player, Bluetooth, Aux, and AM/FM in a small package but will still fit on the bookshelf, look no further. Considering how compact it is, it packs a punch. I would recommend adding a subwoofer if you’re in to heavy bass but it was great as is for what I listen to. Setup was a breeze! Much easier to setup than I anticipated. Bluetooth is a god send for those times you just need to play something quick, like when you are cleaning the house or doing chores.
Long story short, for the price, this is the right choice. For such a small unit, the sound is outstanding. I found the setup to be a breeze. The Bluetooth pairing was effortless. You literally push one button.
If you’re sorting out your options, or wavering on which system to buy, take a good hard look at the Denon. You will not regret it.

This is a nice little system. Sound is crisp and clear. The build is solid and looks of good quality. Bluetooth connectivity is easy and simple to use and it has good range. It does not have a lot of features so this system is not for home theater settings.
It is loud and powerful though the volume knob its a bit hard to turn. Due to its simplified design there are not many buttons and this makes it look sleek.
One thing I don't like is the lack of outputs for additional speakers or wireless speakers.

After spending a few days with Denon's latest compact CD/Receiver, here are my thoughts.
First, I was pleased with the design. It's simplistic and easy to navigate the features/options on front of the unit. The size of the unit is perfect for an apartment or small home where you don't have the space for a regular sized receiver. And the inclusion of a CD player is perfect for folks that haven't fully switched over to a digital world. I still own many CD's and it will be great to have another method to enjoy them instead of in the car.
The audio quality was superb for a system of this size. You aren't losing much with a smaller receiver/speakers. There is an output for a subwoofer if you would like to add one. Another nice feature is a sleep timer. Not too many audio systems that I have seen have this.
Before purchasing this system, note that it is for audio purposes only. There are no HDMI inputs/outputs so do not expect to use it for video purposes. For what it is though, it is a terrific purchase that I highly recommend.

I was in the market for a soundbar but I came across this and with the optical inputs it was a great replacement. The sound is awesome for watching movies and listen to the radio as well. I'm looking for a nice subwoofer now to add with it. Don't play many cities but it's nice to have the option of a CD player. Denon knock it out the park with great sound and a small system.

A real stereo

Great for people who want an actual stereo rather than a boom box or bluetooth-enabled speaker. Great sound and the ability to position the speakers where you want them. There's plenty of length in the speaker wire that's included, but if you want them even farther apart, any off-the-shelf speaker wire can give you even more range. The main unit is a little deeper than I expected, but it still sits well back on a dresser or desk. You may want to measure your shelf if you want to put it on a bookshelf. Hookup is simple and bluetooth pairing is easy. Definitely not portable, but if you want something that looks and sounds like a real stereo to stream music from your phone (or other interconnected device), this is the way to go. And you can also play that legacy CD collection you can't seem to get rid of.

Good home office/small office music system

I've had this device for a few weeks now as I wanted to try it out with different types of music and in different situations. Overall, this is a nice, compact system ideally suited to a small office or home office to play background music. The connectivity options are excellent, and this makes a great choice to pair with a chromecast audio (via SPDIF in) for even more flexibility. The bluetooth function works, but I could not tell if it has apt-X or what version bluetooth it has.
Sound quality is good - highs and mids are clear and concise and the lows are okay. There is some distortion at higher volumes, but that's to be expected given the size of the speakers and materials used. You can increase the low response if you place the speakers in a bookshelf or corner of the room, and don't use the supplied foam baffles on the rear ports. The design is your typical boring black cabinet design, so look elsewhere if you want something flashy.
The included IR remote is too big for a small shelf system - almost as large as my full size receiver remote. You can definitely control everything from the remote. It would have been nice to have a wifi option available to provide for smartphone app control and/or wifi streaming built in.
Overall a solid choice if you're looking for a small bookshelf system for your home office/office/reception room, or to provide background music in a dining room/kitchen. It's a bit too small for large scale entertaining though.

Great system worth the buy

This little system is perfect. We got this system to replace a 5.1 surround sound system. I had my doubts as to whether or not it would, but after getting it set up, this system puts out plenty of power. The best part is, I can connect my phone to it via blue tooth. It’s very easy to set up, took less than ten minutes to completely set up. Everything is in the manual, if you have any questions about functions. The speakers put out a crisp clear sound even at a very high level. If you’re wondering if you can hear them throughout the house, the answer is yes. Also, your neighbors can probably hear it as well. This system is by far the best I have owned and I paid a lot less for this than I did for the one it replaced.

One item missing

It has been a long time since I had any kind of full stereo system. I usually rely on docks for my phone, my computer, and/or bluetooth speakers. For the most part, that's worked fine for me, but I do sometimes miss being able to pop in a CD and listen to it on a really good sound system.
First off, this system offers ALMOST everything all in one. It plays CDs, has bluetooth, USB, inputs for headphones and other items, and it all comes in one complete (but micro!) system. The one thing I'm really missing though? A dock for my phone! I know, there are different phones out there, and I'm sure they didn't want to limit the system's compatibility. But for me, this is still disappointing. It does have bluetooth, but I'd like to be able to listen to the music on my phone without draining the battery.
However, aside from that, this system packs a punch. It's small but the speakers put out good sound without it sounding cheap. I love that there's a remote included that lets me control the system from anywhere in the room. Overall a quality system at a reasonable price.

Micro System That Packs A Punch

I’ve owned several Denon components over the years which always served me well in terms of build quality and exceptional sound performance. I was eager to see if the Denon DM41SBK would measure up. Inside the box you find the the receiver and the speakers nicely packaged separately. Included is the remote, batteries, power cord, FM and AM antennas, and speaker wires.
Upon removing the speaker and receiver from the their boxes and protective styrofoam I was pleasantly surprised by just how small each component was. Certainly much small than I expected. The receiver measures a mere 8.25” wide x 10.75” deep x 4.5” high. Each speaker measures in at 5.75” wide x 8.75” deep x 9.5” high. This system would fit comfortably anywhere. I quickly note that the build quality is just as I would expect from Denon. No cheap materials here. As an additional sign of quality each component has some weight for their size. The receiver weighs in at 9 lbs and each speaker is about 8 lbs each.
Setting up the system was a breeze. No tech skills needed. I couldn’t wait to hear the DM41SBK in action so I powered it on and grabbed a CD. Wow! This micro sound system packs a punch. Music filled my first floor as I slowly cranked the volume. Great sound with no distortion. I was impressed. I put the DM41SBK through its paces with jazz, classical, and rock music selections. All sounded wonderful. You truly get some quality sound from this tiny system. Inputs include 2 optical, and one analog. These certainly meet my needs. In addition to the CD player the receiver features an AM FM tuner and Bluetooth connectivity. Pairing to my phone was simple and sound quality was great.
I couldn’t be happier with the Denon DM41SBK. I can certainly understand why the prior version of this system was an award winning sound system. I’m certain this version will follow suit. If you’re short on space you’ll love this Denon. Even if space isn’t a consideration this system is no compromise just because it small. Highly recommended.

Very easy to set up. I love the sound quality of a good stereo system and this is definitely it! Reminds me of the old school stereo systems with the receivers and turntables. Blue tooth technology makes it a great buy for a music lover.

Excellent sound system

I bought the original version of this Denon about 13 years ago when it was twice the price it is offered at now and it is still going strong. The CD player has had plenty of use and is only cleaned once in a while yet still gives excellent performance. The sound control is excellent although the dynamic base setting is a bit glitchy and the volume control can go up and down randomly sometimes but once you find a good spot the system works very well. I have used the auxiliiary input for sound from my old TV when its sound card was failing and it worked really well ..just had to remember to switch on the Denon and select AUX (much to my wife's annoyance). My speakers are Mission (original equipment with the system), which give outstanding performance from tiny boxes. With the current system being half the original price I have to ask if is it poorer quality speakers? This would be worth checking and if the new systems don't have Mission or similar quality speakers, use the cost difference to buy some a good bookshelf pair.

Great basic 2 channel system

High quality 2 channel system. Comes with
2 quality speakers but has output for subwoofer as well (no subwoofer included). Has Bluetooth capability which works well but no usb input which would be nice to have. I have a lot of music on flash drives that could have been played more easily through a usb port but not available here. No surround modes so not ideal for a theatre system but could suffice if space is a limitation. Kind of a small system which is the point here. It fits well in smaller spaces but requires a bit of depth so check the specs. I like this thing a lot!

Won't even turn on!

I tried to replace a 20 year old JVC FS-7000 micro system with this unit because the JVC was finally starting to have issues. Set it all up per instructions, plug it in, and NOTHING. Won't even turn on from unit or remote. Tried another power cord. Nothing. Giant $400 paperweight. So disappointed, now I'll go with a cheaper Yamaha and never experience this so called legendary sound quality thanks to garbage quality control. My first Denon experience and likely my last.
