It does not work well on stairs. No attachments included and storage on vacuum. Hard to vacuum on stairs. i think better option to buy 2 vacuum clear one for carpet and another for wood floor and you will still save some money. I am thinking to return.

This vacuum maneuver's very nice because of it's size ...but the down side is the price. Attachments are limited & difficult to use on stairs.

Build Material/ Longevity is Questionable

I have owned this vacuum for over 6 months. The reason for this review is my increasingly negative opinion of this vacuum. My position is based on personal experience after purchase and expectations of performance and longevity in return for high purchase price. $500 is a lot of money to spend so don't complain about how long my review is. READ IT!
My first impression was that the Dyson DC41 was extremely flimsy. I understand home appliances today are all made of plastic. However, the DC41 is made of soft plastic that is prone to bending and ultimate breakage. Lesser vacuums are made of solid or hard plastic which tends to be more durable. It might be possible that this plastic make is lighter; but given the choice, I would certainly choose longevity over weight reduction.
One common problem with appliances is over engineering. The DC41 is full of little gizmos that are seem cool at first, but are sure to break over time. Some of these are the pop open bin for dispensing the dirt, the break-over back wheels which eliminate the pedal necessary to unlock the base and tip the handle back, and the auto carpet height adjuster. I will address these one at a time:
1. The pop open bin is basically a button you push to quickly pop open the bottom hatch of the clear bin. Sounds cool right?! No, and for two reasons. The fact that the hatch opens from the bottom means it will interfere with any trash already in the trashcan (plan on emptying your trash before you start vacuuming so there’s enough room). Also, dust and dirt gets caught up in the bottom hatch so you have to sit there and shake it. The other problem is that in order to have this fancy button and bottom opening hatch, it requires a linkage full of moving parts and springs. And yes, these parts are made of the same flimsy plastic as the structure of the vacuum. Due to normal use and shaking the bin, the linkage that pops open the hatch as completely snapped in two, and I recently noticed the hinge that holds on the hatch has cracked. This all raises the question, what is so stinking hard about keeping it simple?! My old Bissell had a bin you just pull out and tip over into the trashcan. Sounds easy, huh?
2. The break-over wheels are next on my list. You remember how vacuums usually have a foot pedal at the bottom to step on in order to allow you to tip it back? Well, Dyson automated that too. The DC41 has wheels that snap back when you put pressure on them from the handle. The idea is actually good. However, they require almost not force to break the wheels over. This means you are constantly picking your vacuum up off the floor because you didn’t balance it just right before walking away. Have you ever tried balancing a pencil vertically on the sharp end? Yeah, it’s like that. Also, with my old vacuum, I liked tipping it back with the base locked in order to wheel it back to the closet. With the DC41, you can’t do this because it is impossible to keep the wheels locked while you’re tipping it back.
3. The automatic carpet height adjuster is my last irritation. The whole unit that moves up and down is - you guessed it - flimsy. With my Bissell, I use to be able to adjust the beater bar up or down depending on how aggressively I wanted to agitate the carpet. The DC41 automated the process, but it doesn’t seem to leave defined lines in the carpet after vacuuming. This tells me that it’s not brushing the carpet as hard as it should. In the six months that I’ve own this Dyson, I’ve watched my carpet go flat. I admit the DC41 has some great suction; but, suction alone doesn’t keep the carpet fluffy.
The DC41 does have great suction at the wand. Here is the problem. My old vacuum would produce 2 – 3 full bins of dirt and hair. The Dyson only produces one. Given the fact that it has great suction at the wand, but doesn’t produce as much dirt in the bin, I am left to believe that the DC41 has suction issues at the bottom end. I’m guessing that either the automatic height adjuster doesn’t agitate the carpet enough or height adjusters are causing it to lose suction in the gaps at the bottom. Either way, this defeats the whole purpose of a vacuum.
Throughout the review, I compared the DC41 to my old Bissell. I have come to realize that if you stay in the $200 - $350 range, you will be getting a vacuum that is great quality at a reasonable price. Let’s be honest. There are a lot of happy reviews of the DC41. But, there are very few that talk about this vacuum after the first week of use. I desperately wanted to be happy too after spending $550 on a vacuum. Looking back, I think I was in denial. The DC41 has a 5 year warranty. Regardless, given the high cost, I expected superior performance. I’m not going to tell you not to buy it because after reading this, if you’re still in love with the DC41, you two are meant to be!

The best vacuum I've bought so far..

First, I don't write reviews, A product has to really impress me before I will take the time to tell other people about it. Never would I have thought I'd pay this much for a vacuum but I'm really tired of buying vacuums every couple years because either they break down or don't live up to what they advertise. My last vacuum was advertised specifically for pet hair however, I was always trying to unclog the vacuum because of the hair from my two cats. I started reading reviews at Best Buy.com to figure out the best vacuum and I came across the Dyson DC41. My sister just bought one and raves about it. I closed my eyes at the price and with Best Buy's 18 month financing decided to invest in this vacuum. I brought it home, unpacked it , laid it all out and at first it looked a little intimidating. But if you follow the pictures exactly and in order, you wont' have any problems with assembly. I had it together in about 15 min. Very easy! I started out vacuuming my living room and couldn't believe the cat hair and dirt it picked up! This vacuum is very light and easy to move around. I have arthritis in my hands, so this is important. Love the ball technology. I didn't have any learning curve and It does help get to those difficult spots. Again, I couldn't believe how well it picked up the cat hair! I My carpet looked revived. hope this vacuum lives up to its reputation and will last a long time. It comes with a 5 year warranty on parts and labor. I'll try to remember in a year to come back and let you know how it's holding up. However, I'm expecting this to be a great investment.

After working with vacuums for a while now, the only ones that I can see myself buying are a Dyson or an Oreck. This vacuum isn't for everyone, especially with the price tag on it. Like some others, I was able to pick it up as an open item and got an amazing deal on it. It's got amazing power and suction which my previous vacuums seriously lacked. The biggest thing is when vacuuming along counters or against the wall and how I don't have to pull the hose out and put it to the grinder. The auto-switching between floor types is incredibly nice as well. I always hated having to adjust the vacuums in the past between bare floors, short carpet, and longer carpets.
If you want a vacuum that will last, then pick up a Dyson. 5 year manufacturer's warranty along with Dyson's great customer service keeps customers for life. And with the 4 additional years of Geek Squad Protection, I'm covered for 9 years now!

The DC41 is a great product and is probably the best vacuum out there. But that hasn't stopped me from noticing a few defects. There are really 2 major ones that nearly made me return this product.
The first issue is that they got rid of the foot lever that typical vacuums have to engage the beater bar. Instead you just force it down and start vacuuming and when you are done you just put it back up and it latches and stays upright. This is pretty neat but when you are putting it upright there are 2 distinct things that happen, it engages the wand hose and then it engages the lock that holds it up. The switch for the hose is much louder and happens first so this leads you to believe the vacuum is upright and to let go when it is not latched properly causing it to fall over if you are not quick enough to catch it. This makes me respond by putting it upright much more forcefully then I want to do to something I’ve bought for nearly $600.
The second main issue is the path the air flows to the motor. There are 3 zones in the canister. The air goes from the outer to the inner getting cleaner as it progresses. The outer one is for big debris and dust, and then air flows through those tiny cyclones on the top and deposits its finer dust in the middle zone. Finally after leaving those cyclones the air goes through the filter (accessible though the top of the canister) and down the inner zone to the motor then finally out through the filter in the ball. The problem with this is that when you empty the canister the dust can and will cross contaminate from the other zones and into the post filter, inner zone. This means next time the vacuum is started it will suck in that dust into the motor and the ball filter.
So here is the story of how I found out about this defect: to test out the DC41 I took it to a house that was very dirty (some parts had not been vacuumed for a year) and vacuumed nearly the whole house. I had to empty the canister 3 times. After the 3rd time the vacuum got clogged (A peppermint in the narrow hose tool) and it activated the thermal cutoff. After learning about the thermal cutoff and what it meant, I took apart the vacuum and cleaned out all the access ports. Also looked at the post motor filter and saw that it was absolutely filthy but the filter in the canister was still white. So the dust was bypassing the canister filter somehow. So I figured it was when I dumped the canister the dust plume went everywhere including back up into the part of canister that is meant to be dust free. That amount of dust can’t be good for the motor.
Here are a few more nit picks:
It feels a little harder to navigate then the DC25
I wish it had a light and something to automatically rewind the cord.
Sometimes it feels like it’s about to break in my hands.
The hose wand sometimes doesn’t extend all the way out of the hose and sometimes causes the airway to be blocked when used. I think the DC25’s wand was better.
It does not has a spot for all the tools.
The reason I decided to keep this vacuum is the active base plate, I have a lot of wood flooring in my house and I want to get as much dust up before I use the Swiffer. Using this vacuum I now only have to use one pad each time I clean with the Swiffer instead of several.
And the DC41 will not be facing that dirty house again so it will never be that full of dust again.
Here are few good things about it:
It has great suction.
It survived that dirty house.
Its cord is long enough that I can plug it in anywhere and vacuum the entire floor.
Ultimately I think this is a great vacuum but for $600 I expect the best with no flaws and this has 2 too many flaws for that price. Unfortunately I can’t find a better vacuum so I’m stuck with this one.

2nd Dyson- New features ROCK!

If you have ever wondered if you are getting your monies worth with a Dyson? You will. This is my 2nd Dyson. My first one was purchased seven years ago (and back then everyone thought I was crazy). It's moved across the country 3 times, picked up enough hair to construct at least 50 dogs, enough LEGOs to build a small town and still it kept on. I noticed over the last few weeks that it was making a funny sound, but otherwise seemed to work. But today it gave up the ghost. R.I.P Dyson 07.
Today I went out and purchased the new DC41 at Best Buy (BEST PRICE) and love it! It is so light weight and the carpet looks brand new. It pulled out all sorts of indention marks in the carpet. I can't believe all the dirt that was sucked up. I just vacuumed yesterday! The ball feature is great. It takes a little getting used to, but you'll love how much closer you can get to the walls and under the furniture. One aspect that Dyson really excels at is how easy it is to take apart if there are any issues/clogs. This is money WELL SPENT!!

I bought my old vacuum from a department store in 1996 and thought that it was still doing a great job. With a 5 year warranty on parts and labor I am hoping for just as long a life on this vacuum. We have owned this one for only a few weeks. I use the vacuum every other day like I did with the old one and I am still impressed by the amount of dirt that is coming out of our carpets. We have notice that we are dusting less and have less cob webs too. That must be due to the filters. My old one also had HEPA filters but I had to change them periodically, the new ones are washable. I like not having to buy bags and belts, new vacuum does not require them. It is far lighter and easier to manuver than the old one. Also it is quieter and sounds similar to a blowdryer.

The Dyson is great. It gets up all the dog hair and is easy to use. The handheld attachments have great extension - I leave the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs and can do the whole staircase with the small carpet attachment. Easily switches from carpets to hard surfaces. I wish I would have bought it sooner!

This is my second dyson (the first one, a yellow roller ball, is still going strong after 4 years, and being used weekly at our vacation rental.) I purchased this one for our residence even though it was a higher price because of the pet attachment, longer cord, etc.
I LOVE it! (And that's hard to say about an appliance.) The pet hair attachment is the first one I've ever had get short dog hairs off a micro-fiber couch. The suction is fabulous (it IS a dyson), the cord is extra long, and it is not too heavy to carry up and down the stairs. It's not heavy to push either (my 4 year old nephew loves to help.) This one also has a larger dirt container versus the yellow ball. Can't beat the 5 year warranty. I've used too many other vacuums to count and dyson is the only one I would buy now.

My wife and I always just looked casually at the Dyson models because of the price. We finally decided to try one after talking to a Dyson rep in our local Best Buy store. It is very light and very easy to maneuver and is designed to get under tight spots that would likely collect pet hair. Excellent on hard floors as it doesn't just blow the pet hair around. Nice attachments and works well for stairs. As I said earlier a little pricey but so far well worth the investment.

Excellent vacuum for pet owners

It's the best vacuum I've ever used for sucking up layers of dog hair. I'm pretty particular about vacuums, and this one is--without a doubt--the best one on the market for easily cleaning up stubborn pet hair and all the dust and dander that comes with pet ownership. It's relatively quiet for having such powerful suction and it's fairly easy to maneuver. I wish it had a slightly lower profile for getting under furniture, but the ball does allow it to turn more easily. Removing the hose is a little awkward but works fine. It's unnecessarily expensive, IMO, but at the same time, you won't find a better vacuum if you have pets. Worth it.

Best Dyson I've owned

I've had 3 dysons: the DC07 which I loved and is still being used by a family member. I had the DC28 animal which was really a terrible vacuum I gave away so I could buy this model.
I have 3 long haired cats and this model does the best on picking up all of it. It is way easier to use on multiple area rugs and bare floors. The wand is the easiest to use. This Dyson does not mark up my hardwood floors like the DC28 did.
I have other accessories I've purchased to maximize the Dysons I've had. I use the turbine head that came with it to get under furniture on rugs. I find it easy to do. I have the extra bare floor brush because I have a lot of hardwoods. I also have the mattress tool which is great for vacuuming furniture, throws and pillows. The dusting tool works well too. I can quickly clean my whole house with this model. I have shaved the cleaning time in half because the last model was much more difficult to use with area rugs.
Overall I really love this vacuum. It is easy to move around. It cleans everything I vacuum easily and thoroughly. In the 8 years I've owned Dyson products I have never once had a repair problem. My original DC07 is still going strong. While I personally disliked the DC28, it is very reliable for the person I gave it to. I feel confident I won't have to worry about this vacuum breaking down.
