Great Lamp in Form and Function

The Dyson company is known for their technology innovation and their attention to design. The Lightcycle lamp checks off both boxes with a unique, modern design and hi-tech features.
The design is modern and minimalistic, resembling a construction crane or a universal bevel protractor (tool used to measure angles). It is both simple and complex, using pulleys, rollers and a swivel to make adjustments to the light’s aim. Positional adjustments are made effortlessly to get the light to aim just where you want it, although if you have the lamp against a wall, its adjustable area is reduced. This is because as you push the light inwards toward the vertical arm, the back end of the horizontal arm moves away at an equal rate. Having the lamp next to a wall will limit how far you can push the light towards the vertical arm. In most cases you will be able to position the base in such a way that it will get your light to aim just where you want it though. This is because it has a full 360 degree swivel. In fact the direction of light can be maneuvered in the following ways: 360 degrees rotation around the base; up and down (around 2 feet of vertical adjustment); and forward/backwards (over 1.5 feet of forward/backward adjustment). In all configurations, the light points downward, as it is fixed to the horizontal arm. I have my base behind my computer monitors with the light pointing towards my keyboard.
The lamp has two touch sensitive points on the top of the horizontal arm that control the color (shades of white) and brightness of the light. On the belly of that same arm are more buttons that control motion detection and light cycle. I find those buttons to be a bit confusing as to which one controls what, so I mainly control the settings with the Dyson Link app on my phone.
An interesting thing about this lamp is that you can configure it (through the app) to display a natural light that is similar to your exact location’s natural light. You can also enter in your age and it will change the light to optimize it specifically for you. Dyson spent years researching and developing this technology and I don’t know how much is hype and how much is science, but I can say that using their age and location synchronized settings, I find the light to be very comfortable at my workstation. The light also has a wake-up mode, sleep mode and an away mode. The away mode is interesting because it will cause the lamp to turn on and off at random intervals between 4pm and 11pm while you’re gone.
I have been using this lamp for long periods of time for quite a while now and I mostly love it. I only have a couple of things that I don’t love. First, it was harder than necessary to assemble. No tools are required but getting the vertical arm to screw into the base was a bit of a chore. There is a plastic disc underneath that the vertical arm screws into and it is very shallow and hard to get a decent grip on to get it threaded. Another thing I’m not crazy about is that there is a lot of “play” in the base, which makes the vertical arm a little wobbly. This may be a way to help balance everything, but it doesn’t seem right. It’s a little thing because when you put the light into any position, it stays there, so it doesn’t affect much; it’s just a little strange to me. The last thing is that this light has a motion detector setting that will turn off the light if there is nobody in the area. It’s a good way to make sure the light isn’t being wasted, but not so good for a workstation application. If you are being somewhat still at your desk, the light will constantly turn off on you. Thankfully, you don’t have to use the motion detector if you don’t want to, and there are probably some applications where it works better.
Overall I have to say that I love this lamp and it is a great addition to my workstation.

A Marvel of Design

The Dyson LightCycle Desk is truly a marvel of design.
The name isn’t quite what is seems, though. When I received the unit to test, and opened the box, I thought maybe it was a LIGHTED DESK. No, it’s a desk light. Maybe that’s the next idea. :)
I wasn’t sure what to expect at first. It’s an unusual design. It comes disassembled; the instructions are printed on the lid of the box. As with previous Dyson products that I’ve tried, the items are meticulously packaged. The manual is wrapped in wax paper, there are multiple pieces of plastic-cling to peel off as you assemble.
The only issue I had with assembly is that I found it difficult to snap the upper arm into place. The photo could have been a bit clearer on how to snap in into place where the wheels were in the correct place. It took me a few tries before I got it right.
The base does take up a lot of real estate. I have a small desk, so I put the light on a nearby file. With the long arm, it still displayed light across the desk.
It is motion activated (if you activate that feature), which is nice for my office; the overhead switch is in an awkward place. I walk in, not even close to the light, and it senses movement.
The bulb housing itself is small, but it puts out a lot of light considering the size. You can move the light up or down, controlling the concentration. You can also sync the light with the Dyson app.
I had some issues with the light fully syncing with my Samsung phone. It would get about half way and get an error. I had to wait until the next day before it would complete the process.
The app is fun to play with. You can put in your location so that the light automatically changes to match your local area. There are also presets, such as Relax mode, which is a warmer hue for winding down. I used the Custom Settings to get the tone just right for the way I work. I’m not a huge fan of artificial light, so having the control over the type of light it puts out was a nice feature.
The LightCycle Desk is another fabulous design by Dyson. It will certainly be a conversation piece in your home.

I’m consistently impressed with the ongoing innovations in useful technology Dyson comes up with, including reimagining home appliances people use everyday. The Dyson Lightcycle task light, is no exception.
The Dyson Lightcycle is a well-made, functional, desk lamp. I could totally see this task light working out well on a large office desk or drafting table, perhaps used by a designer, an engineer, or even an architect. But with that being said, the ultra-modern, almost futuristic, robotic appearance of this light may not compliment everyone’s decor, and may only look good in a particular type of room or style of furnishings.
Unboxing went smoothly. The device was packaged extremely well, and it was a pretty straightforward process in putting the task light together with the handy step-by-step diagram printed on the inside lid of the box. And following the prompts in the Dyson Link App made pairing the Lightcycle to my phone via Bluetooth, simple and easy.
The Dyson Link App enables you to personalize your Dyson Lightcycle according to your age (birth year), and location. You can customize various features based on your daily routine and activity. There are several pre-set modes: study, relax, boost (for automatically increased brightness of white light), wake-up, sleep, and away.
The app allows you to adjust the color temperature and brightness/dimming. This can also be done manually on the Dyson Lightcycle itself via the controls by slide-touch or finger-tap. Color of the light ranges from a warm, relaxing ‘sepia’, to a cool, white light.
The Dyson Lightcycle is designed to reduce eye strain by tracking daylight so as to simulate the natural, local daylight of where you live. I found this technology to be particularly interesting. Since our light needs can change as we grow older, this task light can be customized to meet those changing needs.
However, taking into consideration not only Dyson’s reputation and consistent quality in the design of their innovative products, but more importantly, the cost for this particular device, although impressed with the task light’s performance, unfortunately I’m unable to recommend. The Dyson Lightcycle’s cost, coupled with what this desk lamp can do and who would benefit most from using it, just doesn’t warrant its very high price point, in my opinion.
Basically, there are other lamps out there in the marketplace, as well as, brands of bulbs that can work with existing lamps, which are comparable with regards to similar features - such as pairing with your mobile device and personal customization for home or office use - available for a much lower cost which average consumers would most likely be more willing (and able) to spend.

Great Engineering Easy to Use

First of let me say I was impressed with engineering, just how the light itself work by just putting two stick together very impressed, the design is simple with a modern touch. The installation process was painless, Screw the vertical pole to the base, and then attach the light stick to where the bearings are, and done. You do not see any wires except the one that has to be connected to the wall. Adjusting the lamp to different positions took very minimal effort, it can also be spin around.
By adjusting the height of the lamp upward the light beam spread wider illuminating more area on the desk, adjusting it downward you can illuminate a specific spot. The brightness and light temperature color can be adjusted with the touch sensitive buttons on top of the light. This lamp also has a motion sensor which react when your close by, and turn itself on, acting more like a path light. This lamp is also equipped with auto feature that will adjust the light brightness and temperature color, according to your light environment.
This is not a regular lamp it also works with an app, link it to the Dyson Link app and you can control it from there, actually adjusting the light temperature and color felt bit more accurate than using the buttons. The light itself is very bright and does not heat up. Close to the base it has a USB plug perfect for phone charging. Overall lamp works as intended and is beyond any regular lamp out there, but it may not be affordable to most.

AMAZING SMART LAMP! GREAT LIGHTING AND DESIGN

This light was a breeze to set up and I will be honest I did not know what to expect from Dyson. The setup was a breeze. It wasn't difficult at all and only took 2 steps, screw in the base/attach the arm. The movement of the lighting arm was extremely smooth, the turning base just glided when touched. The amount of control you have is amazing via the app and on lamp controls. The lamp has controls that allow for complete lighting control; brightness/warmth, motion sensor, auto lighting that adjust to the room darkness and synced lighting to the sunrise and sunset based on geographical location. You can preset your own setting for a specific desired lighting for each individual that uses the lamp. The lamp also has a usb-c near the base of the lamp which is great for my cell phone.
The ability to shift from diffused lighting (by having the lamp at it's max height) to focused lighting (by lowering the arm) is a huge convenience. I set it up in the reading area and it genuinely makes sitting in that area and reading much more enjoyable. The lamp design is also a major hit with guests, it is a great conversation piece as it adds a contemporary flare to any area. The first question is, how does it work followed by praise for the flexibility of the design. I definitely recommend this smart lamp to light up any area and inspire tech envy but all kidding aside it is a very nice lamp and you will soon forget about the price tag when you see it in action.

So many features to this smart lamp, just what i expected from Dyson. Nicest features I have found are the daylight tracking and the motion sensor, which automatically shuts it on and off if you leave or enter the room. Exactly what I was looking for and has met or exceeded expectations.

This is a very nice light. I use it on my office and enjoy a lot of the features. The auto light on when I approach my desk is really nice and it’s proximity to me is good. I also really enjoy the ability for it to keep similar light patterns as the sun, go to a study mode, or even change to a blue-ish hue vs white/yellow.
The ability to control the light from my phone with Bluetooth is also a really nice feature. The one touch on top of lamp for all features above listed also makes it easy without my phone around.
I like it a lot - it’s very adjustable. I chose this over the newer model that swivels because I preferred this design in my office to the new one.

I bought this light taskbar for my husband. He's an artist and lately he has been drawing plans for different buildings he wants built on our land. With this light he sees everything much better and isn't experiencing as much eyestrain as with the big overhead light. And, we have the added advantage of a superior "nightlight" if we walk past in the dark...how cool is that? Trust Dyson to be on the cutting edge!

Dyson does it again, I can’t get over how cool my desk lamp is.
Setup up takes about 4 minutes, then just download the Dyson Link app and follow instructions.
I really like the app, the back ground of the app matches the color temp of the lamp setting (a neat feature). In the app you can control the Kelvin temp of the light from 2700k to 6500K.
You can also boost the lux from 100lx to 1000lx (max boost for short periods.)
I am thoroughly impressed with the amount of research that went in to this. (over 850 prototypes, 90 engineers) the lamp is reportedly going to last for up to 60 years (kind of a powerful claim) I will make sure and put this lamp in my will and pass it down as I probably won’t be here to see that.
When in manual mode you can sync the light to match your daylight via the app, you can also use the presets for studying, relaxing, precision lighting, or make your own customization of a particular light setting. Motion detection can also be set to know when to auto shut off when your presence is not detected.
These can be done from the lamp (buttons under and touch on top, or the app. The latter being my choice.)
The lamp is able to mate with all of the smart home gadgets (google, Alexa etc.)
The lamp uses pullies to move up and down and left and right and swivel around. Also known as 3 Axis motion glide Technology. It can be set to about any position you need for all my jobs from working on bills, reading, writing, putting models together.
The actual LED lamp part is very small (about the size of a silver dollar) but pack tons of power.
It uses a technology called Heat Pipe where a drop of water rests above the LED allowing the LED to be placed close together and this results in over 640 lux, or in Laymen’s terms VERY BRIGHT!!
DO not accidentally look into this led light, it would almost be as bad as staring into the sun.
If you are looking for lamp that is one of the most versatile ones on the market, this is the one.
Suitable for any desk or job.
I would recommend this for family or friends.

I bought this light as a gift for a person with low vision. It beats every lamp that he has used to date. Versatility of being able to position the light any way you want and still get wide coverage is a great advantage. There does not seem to be anything on the market that is comparable

Just unpacked and assembled the Dyson lightcycle. I was so looking forward to this light. First of all it is very unattractive and industrial. When assembled the vertical bar is very wobbly where it meets the base, even though I tightened the base screw plate as far as possible. Then the clincher.,...the led light did not work despite reading the instructions and pushing the appropriate buttons. You guessed it.....I returned the lamp the same day to Best Buy for a full refund with no problem. For $599 one should expect a much better product and experience. Buyer beware,

If you're looking for a lamp for your living room, this probably isn't it. The design looks like a tower crane you see on the city skyline. However, as a desk lamp for the office, it's very cool. Typical of any Dyson product, the product comes well packaged and is easy to assemble. You'll need to download the Dyson Link app to get the full functionality out of the lamp. If you already have a Dyson account, it's easy to log in, pair the lamp and run a quick update. If you don't have a Dyson account, it'll take you a few moments to set one up before you can get going.
The light itself goes from pure white to very soft white. You have the ability to adjust it to any color temperature in between and also the ability to adjust the brightness. You can set it for Auto, which detects the light in the room and adjusts accordingly. There is also a motion setting to detect movement so the light will automatically go off when no one is around. You can set it to sync up with your location so that the lamp mimics the natural daylight for your location at that time of day.
Through the app, you can set "Scenes". This is where you can set up presets for the lamp. It comes with a few ready to go, such as Relax (low, soft light) and Precision (Extremely bright, pure white light). You can set up your own based on your preferences or just use the ones they give you. Of course there's always manual control where you can just use the controls on top of the lamp or on the app to manually adjust everything.
Overall, the design is cool and I can definitely appreciate the engineering that went in to this thing. However, it is a very odd looking lamp and it's use is really limited to an office. I hope that Dyson is able to take what they've learned with this lamp and translate it into something for the home, such as a floor lamp. Also, the price is quite high for a desk lamp. That being said, for the amount of flexibility in lighting that this lamp provides, along with the build quality and the estimate or 60 yrs of life, it could be worth it for the right person.
