    Sleep? OK. Headaches? Wow!

I've been trying all kinds of gadgets lately to try and improve my sleep. It has been pretty hit or miss (mostly miss), with most of the devices I have tried. When the CoolDrift Versa became available, I thought, 'Why Not?' While waiting for the Versa to arrive, I read the study in Sleep that serves as the basis for the company's claims for the CoolDrift Versa. BTW, it is in the May 2018 issue of Sleep and it is free to access on the web. I have a strong science background and my wife is a physician so we were able to digest the data on the CoolDrift system pretty well. The data is just OK. They were unable to produce statistically significant improvement over the control group, but they did see an improvement in decreasing the time to reaching the different REM stages and increasing the amount of sleep logged in the first hour. That, and the fact that there are zero side-effects, make this a good option to try if you have difficulty falling asleep. I don't know if they are doing any other studies to expand on this data-set or not. In the few nights I have used it, both as a preparatory treatment (meaning I just used it for the hour right before I turned out the lights), and as a full night treatment, I slept pretty well. Now if this is because of the CoolDrift Versa, or because it has finally gotten cool at night, or my cat just decided to not be a jerk this last week, I really can't say with any certainty. I certainly didn't hinder it, even when wearing the device all night. In addition to having trouble sleeping, I also get some pretty wicked headaches. Not migraine level, but still pretty darn bad. I wondered if the CoolDrift Versa might be a good therapy for that, since many physicians often recommend a cool or cold compress on the eyes or head to sometimes help. What do you know, it worked! I was able to sit and read in my easy chair, with the Versa on my head, and within an hour, my headache was gone. And that is without taking any medication. Even with meds, it usually takes several hours for my headaches to subside. Now this was just a one-off so far, but I'm sure I'll be hit with another headache soon enough, so I will be able to add more data-points. It is an interesting sensation using the CoolDrift. It's not just like putting an ice compress on your head, there is a 'wave' of cold, then just cool, then another wave. I kept the setting at three, which is the mid level, for both sleep and the headache tests, because it felt the best to me for long term usage. I really like how well it is put together. It feels like a quality device even though it is light enough to be worn at night. The fabric coverings are soft and the strap is thin but comfortable. The forehead pad is also nice. For me, I have to wear it just above my eyebrows for the chilling pads to do their best work, which looks about right for all the sample images shown. The headband and the forehead pad are also removable so they can be cleaned or replaced if needed. The battery pack is solid, and has a pretty good length of cord (about 2.5-3 feet). I was able to get a full nights use out of the battery which isn't surprising since Ebb says it is good for 8 hours and I'm extremely lucky if I get 6 most nights. Charging it took a couple of hours from its arrival state (1 dot of charge showing). My only real gripe with the CoolDrift is that it uses a plug in charger with a barrel tip. This would have been an ideal case for a USB-C cord, or even a Micro-USB for that matter. That is something they should implement for version 2.0. Something else I would like to see Ebb provide, either in the box or on the website, is a case for the CoolDrift. Sure I can buy a generic case, but it would be nice to have a custom made case available. I'll pay more for it. All-in-all, I'm pretty happy with the CoolDrift Versa. I'm hoping that additional nights of testing will give me a better idea of how well it works for sleep, and the best way I should use it. I also hope that when my next headache comes crashing down on me, that it does as nice of a job clearing it away as it did yesterday. Now that I'm thinking of it, it might even be a nice gadget to use to calm down a fever or if you have a case of heat exhaustion. None of these other possible uses are suggested by Ebb but I can't see why it wouldn't work, especially since there aren't any real drawbacks to using it.

    Worth a try!

I’ve had issues with sleep for a few years now, and have used a prescription as a back up for some time. I’m lucky if I get about 4 hours of sleep without it. So, when I had the opportunity to try the Ebb Versa, I figured I’d give it a try and see if it helped without the need to take a sleep aid. In the box, you’ll find the Ebb Versa, and attached battery pack, a charging cable, and a couple of user manuals showing you how to use it. I was eager to try it out, so I immediately plugged it into the charger so I could use it on the first evening. The device has a cloth like feel, isn’t as heavy as it looks, and isn’t uncomfortable during use. You may find that you’ll need to tighten it down a bit to get full contact of the cooling pads, and it likely wouldn’t work too well for those of you that find the most comfort sleeping on your stomach. About an hour before bed, I put the device on, ensuring it had a good fit, and turned it on. The battery pack itself is also the control for the device, using the button to set the various cool settings. I found the best setting for me was around level 3, and the effect is almost immediate. During use you will hear a small hum, which at first might seem distracting, but over a short period is suddenly no longer an issue. Over the course of about another hour, I found myself simply laying there feeling the cool sensation from each pad on my forehead. Surprisingly, I fell asleep with the device on, as intended, and didn’t wake up until about 3 hours later with the device still doing its job keeping my head chilled. I also tend to shift a lot in my sleep, usually ending up on my side most nights, and didn’t once feel the need to adjust the device. After night four of the device, it was clear this was having an effect on my sleep habits, as I began to fall asleep faster during use, and didn’t once use a sleeping pill. I’m not entirely sure of the science of the device, but I can honestly say this device somehow works. The cold sensation was a bit of a new experience, similar to placing an ice pack without needing a towel to wipe off the condensation or having to refill the ice. The manufacturer claims the device will stay powered for about 8 hours on a full charge, but I never would stay asleep long enough with the device for the battery to drain. Overall, does this device work? Maybe. For me, it did provide some nights of easier sleep, but it didn’t keep me asleep any longer than usual. However, if you’re looking to try a new sleep gadget, I’d say give this one a try.

Works, Interesting Sensation. Use 15min before bed

I have been using the Ebb Versa for several days now. This is a wearable sleep aid that you wear on your head. It kind of looks like a VR headset, but instead of your eyes you wear it around your forehead. I will call the Ebb Versa semi-cordless. As you charge the main control unit but at night you don't need to have it pluuged into mains power as the control unit has an inbuilt battery. The concept behind the Ebb Versa is it cools your forehead and helps settle your mind. If you are the sort of person who loves to fall asleep on a cold pillow, then this recreates that experience. In my tests, I found it was better to use 30minutes before sleep on the lowest setting. The settings from 1-5, 1 being least and 5 being most - well 5 was VERY cold for me. Ebb recommends you get used to the sensation by using it during the day, which is what I did. At night, the Ebb Versa wasn't good for me to sleep in. Even though you can adjust the cable to be out of the way, the cooling unit makes a vague hum which was amplified by my pillow. It was enough to bother me, which is why I used the Ebb Versa as a pre-sleep aid not as a "sleep through the night" aid. Do I recommend this? Funny enough, yes. It has become a part of. my bedtime routine as I love a cold pillow and 15-30minutes before bed is enough for me to get value out of it. I think the Ebb Versa would be great if you are prone to headaches or fevers. Here's hoping I never need to use if for that, but it's nice to know it's there.

ok if it was not for 1 main thing, I would probably give this a 2 or 3 star. They are not the most comfortable to wear but not so bad either. One factor is the cord. If you don't toss and turn and you like to lay on your back then this is great. Or if you like to sit in a chair. The cord comes off the top and then you can have it go to one side and down. If you are like me, I toss and turn and prefer to lay on side. So, as I move around, the cord gets in the way along with the remote that is attached to the cord. I would like to see this cordless. Have a wireless remote as well as maybe an option to also use Bluetooth and have an app that you can also use to control. I also find that on one side, my right side of head, I can feel the seem so it makes it uncomfortable at times. I would also have liked to see a bag for it. especially if they make it wireless. But it works great as far as keeping cool. And for me, my biggest reason for a 4 star is I get migraines and headaches a lot and this helped out. I usually have to get an ice pack, which overtime is too cold as well as melts. This has a couple temps to choose and just right on the coolness. This alone for me is worth having. I would love to see this more universal. Like use it on your knee, back etc., places you might want to use an ice pack. If you get migraines and headaches and using an ice pack helps out, then I recommend giving this a try for sure.

Puts me in the proper restful mindset

This headset helps me to de-stress and wind down. It doesn’t promote drowsiness nor induce sleep but it does relieve some of the stress and anxiety that interferes with my normal sleep rhythm. I actually like the fact that it doesn’t promote drowsiness because I occasionally wear it during the day to take the edge off if I’m feeling stressed. At night, I typically wear it 30-40 minutes before bedtime while reading or watching television. When I’m ready for sleep, I remove the headset, turn off the lights, roll over and tend to fall asleep quicker than I did in the past. I don’t wear the headset all night because it feels a little too awkward and I don’t like having anything on my face or head while sleeping. In addition to the cooling, it makes a quiet whooshing sound that contributes to the relaxing effect through white noise. I don’t know whether it’s intentionally designed to do so or just lucky circumstance but intentional or not, it’s effective. The user guide warns that some wearers may possibly suffer reactions to the cooling pod materials but I’ve been fine so far despite having sensitive skin. I don’t find the pods irritating or uncomfortable. There are some aspects of the device I wish were better. My biggest complaint is that it is difficult to tell whether the headset is powered off or on. There is no steady visual power indicator and it powers on and off the same way. The lights flash and go off. Another thing I noticed is I sometimes tend to get accustomed to the cold even on the coolest level and must adjust the pack on my forehead for maximum affect. I don’t know if it’s a placebo effect or not, but I feel better when I actively feel the cold sensation. My final complaint is with the fit. The headset easily slips onto my head and feels comfortable, but I also have an extremely low, nearly bald haircut. My wife has a much harder time due to having a significantly higher volume and thickness of hair. It’s difficult for her to adjust the Velcro straps around her hair and she usually requires my assistance with putting on the headset. Even when we get it secured to her head, it's barely able to fasten. Those small quibbles aside, I do like the device because it does provide some relief from stress without medications. It’s not a miracle device and it doesn’t relieve all stress nor put me to sleep like a sedative. However, it is quite effective at taking the edge off which, on most occasions, is just enough. It helps me fall asleep quicker and easier and also results in a more restful and refreshing sleep throughout the night. It also occasionally helps me calm down from stressful moments during the day. If it is merely a placebo effect, it's a darn good one because my wife says it helps her relax as well.

Okay... I hate writing these types of reviews... but honestly... so disappointed. My wife has a very difficult time sleeping, and it is really about her mind racing and just not calming down... and easily woken and it repeats. So from the description, this should have been spot on. Well... here we go: - It is bulky, play and simple. I wouldn't call it overly heavy, but it isn't light for something of it's size. And it is a bit on the cumbersome to get into place. - Once in place, there are two metal plates that sit against the forehead, that are off-putting. While not uncomfortable, they are not all that great from a comfort wise. - The fan can still be heard... So when all the other noise items in the room are off, you can hear that fan hum. - And yes, it does get cold... but mentally, it just seems to be cold for cold sake. After nearly a week, of the gradual increased usage... she just doesn't want to do it anymore, and already tuned out. Maybe will try again, but at the moment... just a disappointment.

The device appears to be well made and sturdy. It has a cord and a control device that must remain attached throughout the night. I tend to toss and turn a fair amount throughout the night and the cord tended to get tugged on, requiring repositioning of the device. When I slept on my side, there was a noticeable "buzzing" sound when the side of the device was pressed against the pillow. I didn't find it annoying, but some may. Unfortunately for using this, I tend to sleep on my stomach at times and this wasn't comfortable when I did that. Otherwise, I found it fairly comfortable. The "comfort pads" to keep the forehead from contacting the cooling pads directly also seemed to keep the forehead from getting the full benefit from the cooling. I found that even after I'd placed it snugly around my head, I'd note the full cooling effect only if I pressed the front of the unit closer to my forehead. When I released, the effect was no longer as good. If I were to tighten the strap tighter in an effort to do the same, it became too uncomfortable. Ultimately, however, I did not see a positive difference in my sleep pattern.

The good kind of Brain Freeze

To start off, I have a very hard time with my nightly sleep cycle. I don't really have much of an issue falling asleep but I seem to wake up countless times throughout the night. In the morning, I typically feel very unrested. I may even have sleep apnea and plan of having that checked out in the future. It was time to try something new and that's where the Ebb CoolDrift Versa came in. I came across the Ebb CoolDrift Versa because I also use the Chilisleep Cube system and they own Ebb. I read a review from a CoolDrift Versa user and she mentioned that it helped her insomnia as well as her sleep apnea and was recommended by her doctor. Now, I am not sure how much it could help with the apnea but I was willing to try and see if it could help me fully sleep through the night and keep my wake incidents in check. The Ebb CoolDrift Versa is supposed to cool the frontal cortex of your brain which they say helps calm you down and helps quiet your mind. They say it's also supposed to help with menopause, hot flashes, stress, insomnia and migraines. They claim to have clinical validation along with decades of research. Plus, no side affects like that from eating ice cream too quickly...lol In just over a week of use, I can say that I actually have seen a difference in my sleep. I hope it's not psychological but I haven't been waking up very often at all. I can count on one hand for the entire week and that is a massive improvement! I'm looking forward to continued use to see if this is a fluke, or the real thing. Ebb says you can use it for short periods of time just before bed or even sleep with it all night. They recommend you use it over time and let your body gradually adjust to it. One thing to note is that Ebb mentions the lifespan of the unit is only around 2 years. I hope that is 2 years of daily use versus just 2 years period, and the battery pack can not be replaced. Would be nice if they revised it to be replaceable based on its relatively steep price point. Each night so far, I've used it for around 30 minutes before bed. It seems to calm me and I've felt that I sink into my bed deeper than I usually do. As I said, I haven't woken up very often at all and I have felt better in the mornings since using it. The one issue I found is that sleeping with it through the entire night was impossible. It generates a hum that you can hear loudly if you sleep on your side but If you sleep on your back all night, you may not have that issue. I generally sleep on my side and the hum was far too loud to use it all night. The unit itself is not really that cumbersome to use and it's easy to recharge. You don't connect it to an app so the setup was minimal. I just pre-charged it overnight before the first use and the battery is listed to last around 8 hours per charge. It looks somewhat like a small VR headset that you rest on your forehead versus over you eyes. It's relatively lightweight and the battery pack has a decent cord length to stow it out of the way while using. The unit is made from black, breathable cloth and has 3 padded cooling plates that rest onto your forehead. It has an adjustable elastic band that can be easily sized to fit your head. There's even a cord holder that Velcros to the the elastic band so the cord it kept out of your way. Using the CoolDrift Versa was simple and straightforward. After getting it adjusted, I slipped it on and long-pressed the power button on the battery pack to turn it on. It offers 5 levels of cooling and each can be selected by quickly pressing the power button. You can see the levels on a built-in led bar that changes with each press. I prefer level 4 of 5. For me, It can be relatively intense at level 5 for an extended period of time but it's up to you and what you find comfortable and effective. Overall, I'm impressed and hope that it continues to pay off. So far it's been quite effective and I hope that over time, that effectiveness grows. I'm looking forward to more restful nights and wake with much more energy!

Let’s start with the most important: it works!. I have been using the ebb versa sing for the last five days and it does work in the three situations that the product recommends its usage: relaxation, migraine, and sleeplessness. Opening the box, I love the small size and basic design, just a headband and a battery-control connected by a wire. The battery recharges fast and stays working for eight hours. The device is turned on, directly in the control, and has five levels of temperature: cold to very cold. Let’s face it, the functioning is very simple, three panels integrated into the headband that deliver cold temperature to your forehead and it cool the frontal part of your brain. The science behind the technology seems to be less simple. It looks that is that part of your brain the one that regulates overacting brains. The headband is adjustable to be sure that stays fixed in your forehead during relaxation but especially when you are using the headband while sleeping. I am a back and side sleeper and I can also confirm that I spend the full night with the versa in my head with no problem. I think that while at the beginning is not always easy to see when the device is on/off. The lights after a few seconds fade away. In fact, by using the versa during the night I found that it was a brilliant idea with the lights off, the room remains dark the that lights don’t keep you awake. My personal positive experiences: 1.- I used versa for five consecutive days one hour before going to bed. With the Covid stress and spending a crazy number of hours working from home, my stress levels were quite high. Ebb-Versa helped. 2.- I have no issues turning into sleep but I normally awake in the middle of the night for 3 to 4 hours. The night that I used the ebb-versa, I was back to sleep in less than 20 minutes until the morning. I think that the picture in the box could scare you but I found that the ebb design is great and the band while looking bulky is actually not so big nor heavy at all and you don’t notice it while sleeping. The device has a small buzz while working but this is not a noise but a steady hum that served me as relaxation while trying to sleep. 3.- I suffer migraines and cold pads are a regular help while the painkillers act. Ebb-versa was perfect and the adjustable band was actually more convenient by staying in the forehead than the pads that you need to keep in place with your hands. Good for migraines. Two small elements (I take one start because of it) that I wish would be there: a battery with a longer life, height hours is ok, a good night of sleep but if you use the versa one hour before going to bed, you could have not enough. I would love it more if the portability of the versa is complemented with a travel bag.

I am not one to wear any sleep-assistant device on my head -even earbuds. However, lately, my sleep patterns have been disrupted and I have developed mild insomnia. Plus, I suffer from hot flashes sporadically, so, I decided to give this a try. First of all, this is a very well-built, high-quality device. The front is covered by this nice breathable cover. The cloth headband seems a bit cheap, but it makes for a more comfortable fit. It is easy to adjust on the fly, and once it is set, it does not wiggle or fall off. The cord to the controller is shorter than I would’ve liked, but I suppose it’s designed to be close by, or take with you should you need to move around. The controller is a bit on the heavy side and has a bigger footprint, but I was still able to put it in my back pocket. The headset itself also is also a bit bigger than I’d expected, and although it’s claimed it is lightweight, I was still able to feel it for the first few minutes, until I eventually got used to it. Using it is pretty much straightforward. Makes sure it’s charged, press the power button repeatedly until the desired level is reached, and relax. I used it several times before I wrote this review, and I had positive experiences for the most part. I tried it for simple relaxation, while reading, watching TV, listening to music, or simply meditating. It seemed to be OK, although it was difficult at times to notice any real benefits. However, I used it when I had a terrible frontal headache and it helped quite a bit. I didn’t take any pills and the headache went away in less than 20 minutes. I used it at night to see if it would help with my slight insomnia, and it did seem to help, but at the same time, I was aware that I was wearing this device. Also, one must keep in mind that it must be taken off before falling asleep, as it will not allow you to move around. Fortunately, I did not experience any hot flashes or anxiety episodes, so I was unable to see how this device would help. Nevertheless, I think it would work just as well as placing a cold wet towel or icepack on my forehead -without the prepping and wet mess. In the end, I would say that the Ebb CoolDrift works as intended and I will certainly be using it from here on. If you suffer from anxiety, hot flashes, or constantly use wet rags or cold packs to calm down or down-regulate after a tough day, this is an indispensable device. For people who do not regularly use cold methods for sleeping and relaxing, suffer from severe sleeping disorders, or are simply curious, I am not sure if the price tag is justifiable.
