This seems like a really cool device. However, I took it home and it wasn't compatible with my unit. I called their Support too. My house was built in 2010.

Easy installation, great for home comfort

This was very easy to setup, with a great set of instructions. It has everything you need to set it up on multiple different types of systems, whether your existing setup has power running to the thermostat or not. It took about 20 minutes to setup and wire since I was being careful.
The remotes available with this system are a great feature since it allows you to monitor the temperature and ensure comfort across multiple areas of the home. I initially just picked up the kit with a single sensor included, but I have actually picked up 2 additional remotes that I am going to add on for a couple more rooms.
The Smart Home/Away feature is great for my schedule since between my wife and I we have schedules that vary from day to day, so my Ecobee doesn't have to be reprogrammed manually if it doesn't detect any occupancy when people should be home, it switches itself to away, and it works the other way too.
Follow Me is great, but you need sensors around for it to read occupancy from, that way it will base the temperature on the occupied areas of the house. For me this make a difference because I have a two story house, and the upstairs tends to run warmer than downstairs. So in winter if nobody is downstairs the thermostat ignores the temp from that sensor and focuses on the comfort level upstairs.
It also integrates with HomeKit so Siri can control my heating and cooling too! This is nice because I share the HomeKit access with my wife so she can access it through hers as well.
I have had it for three months at this point, and I can honestly say I made the right choice!

Remote sensors are a game changer

Here are my conclusions after 6 months of use.
Once you have a thermostat with remote sensors, you will wonder why it took this many decades for someone to think of integrating them. Not only are they sensing occupancy in different areas of your home, they are logging temperature.
My wife and I occupy different areas of the house during different periods of the day. With remote sensors, I can customize my system to maintain the temperature in each area that has a sensor. Example, during the day when we are in the main living space, we use the temperature reading on the main unit. During the evening when we retire to the family room in the basement, it uses the sensor located down there. At bedtime, it uses the sensor in the bedroom.
I enjoy being able customize the settings for a truly optimal living environment. The ecobee3 gives you the information you need to do this because it is constantly collecting data. If you are like me and like to be able to see what your system is doing, you will have plenty of data points to look at.
This is hands-down the best thermostat on the market, you won't be disappointed.
** For those of you wondering if you can install it yourself, I found that the installation was very straight forward, follow the included instructions and if you have a "normal" HVAC setup you shouldn't have any issues. Total install time in my case was five minutes.

1st: The sales person at Best Buy knew nothing about this product. He sold me remote sensors which I didn't need as one did come with the product, so that's left a sour taste in my mouth. I could have gotten Honeywell or other products and done a 'plug and play' which Ecobee tends to state, but the fact is that it requires an additional wire, which some systems don't have. Working in the attic for 2 hours, and sending photos back and forth, and I still don't have a working thermostat. I'm guessing that I will get this operating, but I've got 9 hours invested in this already and to no avail. I'm going to continue to work with customer support to see if we can rectify the situation. I'm afraid that I'll have to order another PEK (Extender Kit) and that will continue to delay my air conditioning, and it's 97 here, wonderful. OK< that's all, my result is that check which wiring you have and you should use this if you have the wires already there, but if you don't, then choose another product. Also, Best Buy needs to train their sales people on this product. Cheers

I'm very happy that I chose the Ecobee3 over the Nest! I was planning on getting a Nest, because we bought one for my parents and they really liked it. However, when I went to the store, I saw the Ecobee3 and was intrigued. The support for remote sensors was the deciding factor. Our upstairs is always warmer in the summer and our basement cooler in the winter. Anything to help balance that out better.
Later, when I was installing the Ecobee3, I discovered another positive feature that I never knew about when purchasing. I have an older furnace and the previous owners never had the "c" wire run to our thermostat, which is recommended for powering smart thermostats. Nest doesn't have a feature to handle this, so it can mess up your furnace, especially older units. The Ecobee3 came with a converter box that I easily wired to my furnace control board to supply the thermostat with the necessary power. Very convenient!
The system is easy to run and I the screen is sharp! Setting up a schedule is very easy, especially if you do it on a computer through the browser. The reports are helpful and the mobile apps run just like the thermostat's interface. I highly recommend!

The Smartest Thermostat on the Market

I've slowly been making my house smarter, and had been eying a smart thermostat as a key upgrade for the past few months. I had heard a lot about Nest thermostats from tech blogs and such, but after doing some more research, learned about the ecobee3 and decided it had more features that would be helpful to me than the Nest, so I went with the ecobee3. The non-homekit unit went on sale, and I don't use any iDevices, so I picked up this unit for pretty cheap. Additionally, I was able to get a $100 rebate from my energy company in massachusetts, which was great. Be sure to look for rebates in your area.
The thermostat arrived quickly, and was very well packaged. Installation was not difficult, although it was a little trickier than I expected. I did not realize I would need to install the C-wire adapter inside my thermostat as well, which worried me a little, but it turned out to be just a matter of unscrewing a couple of wires and sticking a box down there. Now everything is working great! It came with two wall plates to cover up the unpainted area underneath my old thermostat just fine.
It was pretty easy to set up a basic schedule, like a regular old programmable thermostat, but this thermostat has the added benefit of handling schedule exceptions without any user input. That means if I decide to stay home for the day, or don't come home one night, the house will auto-magically sense my absence or presence and either keep me comfortable or save me money, which is great.
The ecobee3 also comes with a remote sensor, which is one of the major differentiating features from the Nest. My small house HVAC only has one zone for five rooms, the thermostat is in the living room, which is the largest part of the house, and is very open. Before the ecobee3, I always had problems with my room being significantly cooler or warmer than the rest of the house at night, probably because it was a small room with an oversize vent, and better insulation than other parts of the house. The old way to fix this would be to try and overcompensate on the thermostat, which is tricky and doesn't always work, but with the ecobee3, I just put a remote sensor in my room, told the system to only use that sensor at night, and now, suddenly, I am always comfortable at night. It really is amazingly effective. I will soon buy some additional sensors to make the system even smarter. FYI the sensors have not been tripped by my cat, which is good.
The other key feature for me is the rich API that ecobee makes available. I use it to integrate the thermostat with my SmartThings home automation hub. The thermostat appears in the interface like any other smart device, and can now be included in all sorts of home automation programs. The thermostat is already pretty smart, but when you combine it with other systems you can do even more. I now have it set so that if anyone opens a window or door in the house for more than 10 minutes, the heating and cooling systems will shut down and instead only ventilate, automatically.
Overall, the interface and control systems for the thermostat are excellent. The web interface has been a little buggy recently, but the company assures me they are working things out. I haven't been able to access the HomeIQ reports yet, but hopefully they will be ready soon. I am very happy with my purchase and have been thinking about upgrading my parents home with an ecobee as well. It would be easy enough for them to use, and could really save them some money as well.
PROS
-------------
increased comfort and money savings with AutoAway and occupancy detection
excellent UI and beautiful hardware
rich API, compatible with smartthings and logitech harmony, IFTTT
remote sensors are the biggest innovation in thermostats since programming
much more powerful than the nest thermostats
logs temperature, humidity, occupancy, and HVAC usage constantly and historically, great for people who love data
it displays the weather and indoor humidity on the screen
CONS
--------------
still a little bit buggy in the web app, but does not affect operations
was a little difficult to find energy rebates for it (they do exist!), nest makes it easier, with a rebate finder website

The Best Thermostat on the Market

The Ecobee3 is the best thermostat on the market, I purchased it about 9 months ago. It has saved me around 30 to 40 dollars a month on my electric bill. The remote sensors coupled with the sensor priority feature is the key to my savings. As well as the Smart Away feature, My wife has a different work schedule every week. The smartAway feature turns off my AC or heat when no one is home no matter what the schedule says it should do at the moment.
Beyond savings, It has also provided peace of mind for my wife and I. We have a 13 month old daughter and her room can get really hot during the day. Knowing what the temperature is in her room when she is sleeping is amazing. We can check her room and give it priority over any other room at night, ensuring it doesnt get too cold in her room in the winter. Definitely the best feature as a Dad.
I recommend this thermostat to everyone, including my friends and family. I tell everyone about the Ecobee3 all the time. If you have kids it is a must buy for every parent. If you have a really high electric or gas bill and need to save money, Buy it!!!

THE REAL SMART THERMOSTAT

I was an early adopter of the Nest thermostat, but when I moved to a new house I started assessing what was available in the market since my last research for a smart thermostat. The Ecobee 3 showed up at the top of most searches and review. Upon doing some more research its killer feature are the remote sensors. It actually calibrates the house temperature where it actually matters (where you are!).
The house had an X10 type of thermometer so I had to run cables from the HVAC system into the thermostat, but even with that extra work it was a pretty easy installation (took me 1hr) and the guided installation process made it a breeze to set up and getting it working.
The device interface is elegant and easy to use. My wife, which doesn't love technology, was able to get to manage it without me even explaining it to her. The apps in all of its formats (web console, phone, tablet, wearable) are really good.
I'm really happy with my choice plus it affords you the flexibility to expand the system with other sensors or accessories. If you buy this product you won't regret it!

A fairly simple installation even with the requirement of the power extension kit, it took approximately 30 min. Then registration and setting up the iPhone app, and signing into the web portal, I was all set up and ready start saving.
The web portal is a great feature to see when and for how long your HVAC equipment has been running, and shows your savings in comparison to using a regular thermostat. There is also a comparison to show you how efficiently your house uses the energy, or wastes it. With that information in hand you will know if you may require a home energy audit.
I like the control it gives me without being infant of the thermostat with the mobile app. If you go out when your Ecobee is set to the home setting, once it detects no one is home after 2 hrs it will set itself to away mode, or if you realize you have forgotten to put it in away mode while out, you can use the mobile app to make the setting changes you want.
The algorithm is top notch, and since Christmas '14 the unit has almost paid for itself in savings.

The Ecobee3 is great. It has many features and it allows for total control from just about anywhere. It gives you the ability to password control it, so no one can alter your settings. Super easy to install (I did it on my own) and it took less than 5 min. to do so. Customer service is also great and walked me thru one of the wire placements. It's app is easy to work and is super convenient. It also gives you a break down of when the Air/heater is working the hardest and when it is not. The sensors add another level of control for activity or inactivity in the house. It' also HomeKit enabled.

This product is compact, stylish, easy to install, and has some great smart features. My favorite and perhaps the main selling point of this thermostat is its remote sensors. These sensors allow you to use different areas of your home to measure the temperature instead of being limited to the main thermostat. This is not the product's only great feature. It integrates these sensors into a variety of great comfort-enhancing and cost-savings opportunities, allowing only motion-detecting sensors to be active, logic to determine when to start cooling/heating so a desired temperature is achieved at a certain scheduled time, and the ability to move into home or away mode to save money when no one is home. Although there are some features lacking for those who would really like to customize their heating/cooling system, it is a tremendous upgrade to a traditional thermostat with scheduling and perhaps even a fun tool to have in your home.

I own two of the non-Homekit enabled version of the Ecobee 3 for each of the zones in my home. A few things stand out about the Ecobee 3.
1. It is a breeze to set up on the device or on a computer. I used the computer for the bigger screen. Most programmable thermostats takes a while jumping in and out of menus.
2. Remote sensors, this makes the Ecobee 3 stand out against any other thermostat. This will work best for larger apartments and homes and those with rooms that have a larger temperature differential. We use this to make sure the kids rooms are cool/warm when they sleep.
3. This is really a beautiful device, always a conversation starter when people see it on the wall.
4. The community is great and Ecobee is very proactive in ensuring people know how to use their device and updates.
I don't think anyone would be unhappy owning this device.

I bought Ecobee3 (Homekit enabled) and have been using this for almost a month and happy with my decision to buy and install this. My home had a programmable thermostat which according to me was very difficult to understand and use. I almost hated it and there were rooms that used to be cold and some rooms more than warm. Read some reviews about ecobee3 and decided to take the plunge. I am not very good at DIY but read some instructions online, watched installation videos and read the manual too. We didnt have the C-Wire, so this Ecobee3 comes with an adapter. I had to attach this to the furnace and installed the thermostat. Probably it took around 45 minutes and was not so hard. Once installed, I downloaded the app and there are loads of options to program the desired temperatures. If we are not home, we can easily set the temperature using the app, so that when we are home, it is set to the desired and comfortable temperature. I have not yet seen much savings (barely a month till now) and I am pretty much sure that this will definitely save money in the long run. I am very happy to get rid of my old thermostat and we are happy to use Ecobee3. I highly recommend it. I will update my reviews if I faced any challenges.
My reviews are totally honest and I was not given this product for free or for discount to write this review :)

I had held off on getting a Gen 2 Nest for a couple years, as it was certainly due up for a refresh. While I waited, I found the ecobee and it was definitely the right thermostat for me for a couple of reasons:
1 - Room sensors. This is the #1 differentiator between the Nest (and any other smart thermostat) and the ecobee. If you're spending upwards of $300 on a thermometer, I assume you have more than 1 room in your house. And often times the thermostat is not in the most important place (its in a hallway or dinning room, etc). If you want to make sure your newborn is comfortable you have to guess to over/under heat based on how their room feels. This should be nothing more than a software update for the Nest, so I don know why they do not add the feature..but even if they do, you can get the ecobee and 3 sensors for the same price as just this new Nest Gen3.
2 - Homekit support. I know this one isn't for everyone, but it certainly was important for me. I use a lot of apple products between my wife and I and, in her case, its the only way she isn't overwhelmed by technology. The beauty is there is nothing, other than again software, that prevents the ecobee from being used by other systems. It has an open API and is integrated with things like IFTTT, etc. So its a bit more "future proof" as you cannot get HomeKit certified unless you meet rigorous security standards.
Which brings me to 3... security. If you use HomeKit or not, you know that the hardware and encryption is certified to be extremely extremely secure, who wouldnt want that for all their home automation.
Overall, I think that from a cost/features perspective, those looking at the Nest should also look at the ecobee. It was definitely the right decision for me.

Really liking the Ecobee3

We've had this thermostat for nearly a month now and are very happy with it. While the remote sensors are nice, we only have a single heat pump/furnace so it doesn't really benefit us. However, the app and the web interface for the Ecobee3 are very nice and provide a lot of useful functionality when you cannot walk up to unit to make adjustments directly. Additionally, the system promises to report lots of metrics, although many of them will not appear until after the unit has been in use for one year.
We looked at the Nest as well, but I preferred this one (a) because it had a real solution for systems that do not have a 'C' wire installed already (and it was surprisingly easy to use) and (b) we like the aesthetics of this better than the Nest. No regrets at this point - we'll see how it works in the long run. Because of the web interface programming this thermostat is much easier than the older thermostat that we had.
As an added benefit, a new version of the App has been released that is supposed to provide geofencing capabilities. I'm not sure if this is a feature that my family will take advantage of, but it certainly will be a useful if not critical feature for other people.

The one feature that sold me is the remote sensor. Our master bedroom is almost never the same temperature as the main hallway where the thermostat is mounted. With my old thermostat I had to set the AC very low at night to make that room comfortable. With the remote sensor I now set the thermostat for the temperature I want in the bedroom for the night time program and it keeps it right there. The install and setup where very easy for our multi-stage HVAC system. The initial programming was quite intuitive and was as easy as answering a series of on-scrren questions. I am very happy with the ecobee3 and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Best "smart" thermostat on the market

Reasons why I like the ecobee3 over the Nest and the Lyric: Ease of use, ability to customize to almost any degree, and remote sensors. Out of the box (which has everything you need to get set up) the "Bee" is ready to roll. Other than having to fix a wiring issue left by an old installer on our old mercury switch thermostat, I was done and cleaned up in 30 minutes. Looks-wise, the display is very intuitive and responds quickly to touch. It's very similar to the Android operating system, which is great because my wife fears learning new technology and this looks like what she already uses. The learning curve is short and painless. I like it because I can customize beyond just setting a timer program, and I'm limited only by my imagination and the capabilities of my HVAC system. In it's most basic use, the Ecobee3 is a very expensive programmable thermostat. Once you "pop the hood" so to speak, you can take advantage of other programs beyond simply ON/OFF based on the time of day. Here's the game changer: The remote sensors. The Nest and Lyric want to learn your schedule. Our schedule changes every day, so having a sensor that determines occupancy is more what we need. The sensors themselves are tiny enough to stash on a shelf, wall, or doorway. Add enough of them to the rooms you care about and you can "blend" the temps in however many you choose and the system will maintain an average temp in those rooms. Again, all of this is customizable to the nth degree. Add in the remote capability, and I can do anything I want to the system with my phone, tablet, or laptop from anywhere in the world as long as I have a cell signal. All of this is built right in, no modules to add on, no subscriptions to maintain. Ecobee has a fantastic website community where people share programming tips and tricks, and customer service is right there if you need them. They're the new kids on the block, but they've got a nice product to compete with the big dogs. Buy with confidence. I did. No regrets.

I purchased 2 Ecobee Thermostats about a month ago. I was pretty torn between what brand to go with. After reading many reviews and talking with friends I went with this one. I was definitely surprised how easy it was to setup and get going. The remote sensors are great not only do they help you average out the temp in your house but it is a great way to see the differnt temperatures in each individual room. I love the amount of data that is at your disposal. If you are a person that likes data this is the perfect choice for you! I am excited to see new features as they come out.
