I picked these up on Black Friday weekend after a brief demo in my local Magnolia Home Theater listening room at nearly 50% off . They sounded great in the store. The came of as loud, clear, with good tonal balance. When I got them home those things were true but the speaker was not very high resolution and lacked detail. The sale price was great but the speakers did not sound like the $400 speakers they sell for at regular price. There are much better sounding speakers out there even at the sale price.

I don't have a subwoofer yet so maybe that's why these speakers can't handle loud music

I picked out a set of these, over the Definitive Tech Studio Monitors, of the same size and wattage. I spent a long time comparing them side by side in the Magnolia room, and I truly liked them better than the DefTechs. (and over the Polk's, Klipsch's, Martin Logan, & B&W too...whatever was within + or - $150 of these)
They are a beautiful looking clean sounding, full-spectrum, pair of bookshelf speakers. They are detailed and not too harsh or bright. I am constantly surprised by how rich, balanced, and distortion-free these are overall. Every piece of music sounds good, the voices, instruments, the details, the simply GREAT sound. I think the bass is quite good. (as modern speakers go) They can stand alone and do anything you'd need, in an office on a shelf, any smaller space, like a dorm or bedroom.
They could easily handle being the front main speakers in a surround set-up and sound fabulous. They'll rival anything among floor-standing competitors up front, assuming you're using a subwoofer in that case. If youre fortunate enough to have these as rear surround speakers, you're SPOILED!
I would nominate them for the best bookshelf speakers under $500/pair msrp. I loved them so much, I GLADLY got a second set, on the 2014 Black Friday special. I know the price fluctuates... If you can't spring for their ELITE brother, the Energy RC-10, no worries...these are a no-brainer... nothing comes close under $400. On deep sale, they're daring you not to buy them!!
I love mine and would tell anyone to start with CB-20's if you're thinking about new bookshelf speakers.

I set out to find better speakers than the system I had been using for over a dozen years. I tested a variety of loudspeaker systems and in head-to-head comparisons, the Energy speakers were more pleasing to my ears than anything else I listened to.
I am using four Energy CP-20's as main speakers and surrounds, an Energy CC-10 as a center channel and a Klipsch 12" powered subwoofer. All of this is setup in my living room that is approximately 18ft by 15ft.
Even without the powered subwoofer the Energy speakers give a surprising amount of clear and punchy bass. They are well-balanced and sound wonderful whether I am listening to music or movies. I spend an equal amount of time watching TV from my TivoHD, listening to music from my home library or watching live concert videos from my BluRay collection.
The Energy CP-20's are excellent given their price and size. I would not have been able to find better speakers even if I had spent three-times as much.
I highly recommend that you compare them against any other loudspeakers within your budget.

I compared these to Klipsch Icons-I am a long time Klipsch fan but the CP20 s give you much more warm sound than any of the same size I heard. These sound terrific. I bought these on sale so value is untouchable--not sure would have purchased if no sale but after hearing I will say that even at full price, not much comes close to.
Let me expand on my "small speaker" comment--I know floor and bookshelf speakers are two different animals altogether but the CP20's don't sound as boxy as I expected they would based on experience with smaller speakers. They still sound like small speakers but a small to mid-sized sub compliments these unlike almost all of the other competitors where it is an absolute necessity.
As far as volume, the 92db rating sounds modest to me. They get loud and the range holds true. Even without the sub engaged, they hold their range even higher volume levels.
I am running these with Harmon Kardon low power receiver so they can be run off anything. I have mostly listened to downloaded music with these and I am very happy with. I have not listened to CD's or in Home Theater application.
I have very diverse taste in music so--Adele and John Legend sound every bit as good as Kiss or Maiden with these. Don't know how Steven Tyler would do but not sure he sounds good on any speakers...

My Magnolia salesmen was VERY good and definitely has done his homework. It was fun watching him and my dad nerd-out by talking about audio equipment. For my first home theatre system, I bought a pair of these and they have yet to disappoint me. Once I can afford floor speakers down the road, these will be a good pair for rear speakers. I am very happy with my Energy CB-20 speakers!!!

Where to start... The Energy CB20's have a better sound than the Bose that I have heard... Not much suprise for the audiophile out there. These deliver an extremely nice mid sound, nice low to 60ish Hz... I would recommend setting your crossover to 70 though. The high are great. The build quality is AMAZING.
I bought two of these and two of the CB10's. After hearing the CB20's, I took back the 10's and bought two more 20's. I got these all four on sale for $250 a pair... what a deal it was. I highly recommend these speakers. I was going to buy two sets of Bose speakers till I noticed (with the gill off) they were cheap paper speakers. Then, I looked at these and they just looked much higher quality and sounded a million times better. These are amazing speakers. Use at least 14 gauge speaker wire with them.

I had listened to this set of speakers along with a pair of DEF Tech speakers. I actually liked these even though sales rep stated Def Tech was better technology. About two weeks later these babies went on sale. Excellent pricing. I bought these without hesitation and have no regrets whatsoever. They replaced a pair of JBL HLS 810 speakers that have an 8" speaker with 3/4" tweeter. These speakers surpass the JBL's in every way. Very crisp, fast and plenty of base to fill our 14'x17' family room and extend into the open kitchen. Total room size with kitchen approx 14x30. You can play them low and they are great or cranked up they are super. Powered with 70 watt per channel Marrantz Analog receiver. No complaints whatsover. Alecia Keys with her base or 70's Chicago, Michael McDonald 70's, Anita Baker all fantastic. Crisp piano, great base without subwoofer. Not too bright and I can get all the base I want or need .

Purchased these bookshelf speakers a few weeks ago, they're out of this world. I'm still waiting for my PL-200 sub and center channel to come in, so I've just been listening to only these speakers. The clarity and sound quality is fantastic. I listened to the M&Ls, Kl, Inf, etc... These had, by far, the best sound quality. I was able to crank them up a bit during my SB party and holy cow. For a 6.5, these things are crazy loud and have plenty of bass, much more than you'd expect from a bookshelf speaker. Looking forward to getting my entire system put together, which will include the 5.5" for my surround speakers (which essentially be positioned above and outside of my 6.5s). Pick some up! You'll love them.

good sound for two way speakers

I purchased these energy speakers to replace a three way bookshelf system with corroded terminals that kept shorting out. The old speakers had a ten inch woofer, four inch mid range horn and 2 in. tweeter. These energy speakers have a 6.5 inch woofer and one inch dome tweeter and delivers better base.and high end than my old three way speakers.. The problem with two way speakers is the woofer has to handle both the low and the mid range frequencies. In this case the woofer can't reproduce the mid range frequencies as well as my previous three way speakers. That said, the sound is overall good for a two way bookshelf.

These speakers have a great balance of mid and high tones with adequate deep notes. I do wish the bass was slightly more balanced but this is a very minor complain. overall the speakers have performed great and exceeded my expectations.
The guy at best buy actually recommended not buying these and going with definitive which i thought were too bass heavy.
These sound great with everything from Vinyl to Movies. Definitely a great purchase.
