Best Current Bang for Your Buck!

I ordered the 4010 from Best Buy on Monday and the expected delivery date was 10/03/18. However, I got an email last night that my projector had arrived at my local store already. Being the impatient person that I am, I ran over and picked it up. I am coming off a Sony VPL-HW40ES, and I was pleased with that projector's picture in a light controlled setting, but not with any ambient light. My use splits about 50/50 between watching movies in total darkness and watching sports with the lights on. I am by no means an AV expert so take this review with a grain of salt, but so far, I am very impressed! I understand this projector has limitations but, for me, it hits the current sweet-spot on 4K, ambient light performance and price. I didn't have the budget to spend more than $2,500 on the PJ and I wanted 4K capability. (I know it’s not true 4K)
My initial thoughts with absolutely no tweaking to the settings.
1) This thing is massive! I assumed, incorrectly, that the ceiling mount from my existing Sony would work and it’s not even close! The mounting arms are nowhere near long enough.
2) The colors out of the box look fantastic! Again, I am no AV expert, but to me the colors look better and deeper then the Sony.
3) 4K Sports on DirecTV look amazing! I re-watched an old 4K recording of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament and couldn't take my eyes off it. Excited to watch the ND/Stanford football game in 4K Saturday night!
4) Viewing in ambient light is much much better than my Sony and it’s really not even close!
Overall, I am very pleased with the 4010. I know the chipset has some limitations (not having the 18gbs chipset) and it’s not true 4K, but for me it’s the right tool for the job. This is my 3rd PJ and I upgrade about every 3-4 years and this unit will be a nice bridge until I can afford a true 4K model with enough lumens to handle my ambient light needs.
Here are a few photos from last night’s initial setup.

I am a savvy technology guy. I have worked in tv production an entire career. I am great at troubleshooting and figuring things out. I picked up this unit and I could not get HDMI 1 to work properly. It has that dumb HDCP 2.2 software that is a roadblock in place to prevent people from recording 4k content...but you can still record 1080p? I digress.
Anyway, there are only 2 HDMI ports on this projector and if you want to unlock the full potential of this beast, you need HDMI 1 to work as it is the only outlet that allows for 4k upconverting, frame interpolation adjusting, etc.
HDMI 2 is basically a 1080p passthrough with limited picture customization. There are many cheaper projectors that are only 1080p, so I, nor you would spend the extra money to have a lost important feature.
I searched high and low for answers as to why I was getting a HDCP 2.2 error message. I use a roku, and could see the home screen, but trying to play anything, the screen would show an error. I tried many different HDMI cables, some from my house, Rockfish Certified from Best Buy, High end cables from amazon. Nothing worked, same error. I then plugged in a fire stick. HDCP Error messages again.
HDMI 2 port worked fine and I could watch anything and everything. I called tech support, I checked message boards. I couldn't really find any documentation on this specific unit. So I returned it to swap for another unit.
Got home, plugged in HDMI 1 port with same cable and same Roku as before and viola! Worked normally. No issues.
5 star to Best Buy for taking the return making it a simple swap out for a different unit. But only 4 stars on the review as my first one was purely a defective unit that I could not fix.
My final diagnostics is that my first unit had some kind of software issue with the HDCP 2.2 technology that was not letting it complete the handshake between any outside source.
Other than that, when working, this projector is awesome. It has a great picture out of the box and there are a million adjustments you can make to suit your needs. It is easy to set up and get watching with presets, but a little tweaking can make it look even better.
Its heavy and rather large, but runs very quite and is bright enough for a theater room with some lights on.

Awesome Projector for Setting Up a Home Theater

My husband was in complete awe of the picture quality of this projector. Having worked in the bar & restaurant industry for years he's had lots of experience with setting up projectors for sports and he said this one completely blows them all out of the water! Even in broad daylight in the sunniest room in our home this projector delivered an amazingly bright, clear picture. And watching our favorite movies on a giant screen just took movie night to a whole new level.
We hooked ours up to a streaming service and it was super easy. You can adjust the size of the screen to an impressively large picture and I like that you can adjust the height up and down with just the press of a button for a precise set-up.

This projector has a great picture right out of the box. Digital lens shift horizontal, vertical, and keystone correction allows for versatile placement. But this thing is big and heavy. My local Best Buy had a demo model sitting on the shelf. Check this out if you can to see if you can live with the size. But don’t be fooled by the light weight of the sample model- the production model is much heavier. If you can get past the size and weight, everything else is great. Natural colors, deep blacks, and solid video processing. From what I’ve read, it can’t handle 4K at 60 frames per second, but I’m not sure what is even in that format. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. If nit-picking, I imagine contrast could be slightly better. White images on an otherwise black background displays slightly lighter blacks adjacent to the white. Towards the edges of the screen, the blacks become blacker. But again, I’m looking closely for things that could be better if I were to spend an additional $1000. This projector is certainly worth the money.

Everything you could want in a projector

Let me start out by saying this is my first projector, so I am not an aficionado by any means.
That said, I have been using this projector daily for upwards of 8 hours every day to play games, watch movies / tv, or with my desktop computer. I use it in “eco mode” which is the lowest brightness and its still plenty bright for me, even with my lights on! (As an added bonus, the lamp lasts up to 5000 hours in this mode!). The projector is always silent and has never gotten overly hot even with extended use.
The image looked great to me out of the box, but there are several user-friendly quick image modes you can pick from and advanced settings for fine tuning if you so desire. I play games in 4k 60 FPS and it looks and performs beautifully.
If like me this is your first “home theater” projector, let me warn you that it is HUGE. I knew it would be big, but in person it’s much larger than you expect. I live in an apartment so I can’t really mount it anywhere, so I bought a “Pearington AV Presentation cart” off of amazon ($180 but worth every penny). It’s what we used at school to wheel them around and it’s a perfect fit for this projector. It hold all of my consoles, my speaker system and accessories. On top of that I can move my whole setup around easily! I highly recommend getting one of those if you are also renting.
TLDR: After thorough use (around 2780 hours) I can highly recommend this projector. These are quality machines built to last. It has everything you could want from a projector and I can’t imagine a better bang for your buck.

WOW is all I can say. This is my first projector and I am impressed with the quality of this baby. The pictures are crisp and clear.
It is great for a movie night, watching tv, or social gathering at home with your friends. lens shift is a good feature for adjusting the picture on the wall.
set up was a breeze as well, I was able to hook my chromecast up in about 10 minutes.
I highly recommend this one for first timers or if you're looking to upgrade your old projector.

Movies are a big thing in our family and we recently replaced our old projector with this new one and we love it!
Set up was a breeze and I had it up and running in no time.
My first immediate reaction was WOW, the picture quality is incredible. Not having 4K then having 4K you can really see the difference. The projector has 2,4000 lumens of color and white brightness which basically means you are getting full, bright color and the picture is not distorted and pixelated (like our old projector was). A while back I had priced replacing our old projector and found that 4K projectors were pretty pricey so this price point is really good in my opinion!

Pros - Amazing picture quality, surprisingly very much silent operation in spite of it's big size, good design, very useful auto shutter for lens, hardly takes any time to start projecting, contrast brightness is wonderful, extremely helpful vertical and horizontal lens shift for perfect setting.
Cons - Size is bit more than expected.

3rd Epson projector over ~5 years. This 4010 is light years ahead of my previous 2045 and 2030 before that. Did a side by side of the 4010 and 2045 and Picture on 4010 looked like an OLED Tv vs an old 720p tv that had its brightness turned way down. Even with ambient bright daylight the 4010 shoots an image almost identical to a darkened room (Dynamic color setting). $2k is alot of money for a loving husband and father of 4 young’ens and I scrounged so many expert reviews etc, comparisons with Optoma DLP’s and even Sony’s. The last generation of this projector (4000/5040) had some power supply issues but when this one came out with almost as many lumens as the 5040 and Epson’s excellent track record, I knew it was the right purchase. I just dont see any way a picture can get better than this, not even expensive movie theatres like IMAX are this good. Buy this and I promise you wont regret it. Ive got an xbox one S, an xbox one X, PS 4 pro and an Apple TV 4K hooked to this and even the 1080 stuff upscales to astronomically better than my old 2045. I will upload photos ina few days of the side by side when I get a chance.

I did a lot of research before picking out a projector. I looked at everything from this model to the Epson 5040ub, the Sony true 4k models, and the Optoma UHD60. I ultimately went with this model because it was in stock and I don't really consider myself a videophile so I was not sure that I needed to spend premium top dollar on a projector. Let me just say that I have not in any way been disappointed with image quality. This thing is extremely bright and has a very vibrant image. I am replacing an old Vivitek 1080p projector and it is night and day how much better this thing looks. I can not imagine the more expensive projectors putting out an image that looks better than this one. It is bright enough to play in my living room with some lights on and with the windows open. You can not beat the image quality when playing 4k movies on this thing with any other projector in this price range. My only gripe is that it does not have an audio out port. I have my projector and TV in the same room and occasionally want to use them both at the same time. It would be nice to have an audio out port on the projector so I could hook up a bluetooth transmitter and listen to the projector when I am running both the TV and projector at the same time(for example when my wife is watching tv and I want to watch Monday Night Football). I bought a long HDMI cable to run from my projector to my surround sound for when I want to watch movies on the projector with the TV off but I can only have 1 HDMI out on my AV receiver. Image quality on this projector is perfect and I would have given it 5 stars if it had an audio out port. Also be aware that if you are using this on an Apple TV 4k that you will have to adjust the display setting as this does not support 4k HDR at 60 frames per second. Also, I recommend leaving HDR off as the SDR picture is much brighter and looks better most of the time over the HDR picture.
Pros:
-4k movies look awesome
-HD content on regular direct tv looks good
-Bright enough to watch with lights on/windows open
-Motorized zoom and lens shift
Cons:
-no audio out port
-Sports/fast moving scenes don't seem as clear when watching on regular tv (look excellent when watching movies though)
-HDR is too dim (even after update)

I bought this projector after spending lots of time in reading comments ,and watching lots of reviews in the YouTube. I have used this product for about a month and I really liked it so far. The picture quality and color brightness is really great. As mentioned in lots of other reviews this is little heavier so you have to mount it in the ceiling after finding studs.

If this projector is in your budget, dont think twice. Bright, vibrant colors right out of the box. Bright Cinema mode on Eco bulb matched with my screen perfect for daytime viewing with ambient light. In a dark setting or with minimal ambient light the picture jumps out like a modern LED tv. I dont have a 4k source(older ps4) to review that aspect but PS Vue and BluRay look wonderful. The setup is easy. Lots of lens shift makes it easy to line up with a screen. The blacks and whites are astounding. The depth to the picture is fantastic. Its not true 4k, but that wasnt a deciding factor for me.

I believe its the best bang for your buck. This projector has a much better picture than my old 3010 home cinema. This is not true 4K but instead doubles the 1080p and its impressive. The brightness is exceptional in daylight hours. The only thing is the size of this machine is much bigger than the 3010 and I think I should have bought a bigger mount but I am using my old one for now. I have only owned it just about a month now with no issues. I hope it lasts as long as my old one did.

Epson 4010 projector: Excellent picture, contrast, and brightness. I expected a great 4K picture, and wasn’t disappointed. I was surprised at how quiet it is.
This projector does everything well. My theater is small but near-professional quality, Atmos, sound-proofed, lighting, and 8 theater recliners, so I needed something good quality without spending more than about $2K.
This is my 4th projector, and a replacement for an Epson 3020.

Not real 4K, but has good color accuracy and flexibility to install. We've never owned a projector before, so we did a lot of research before choosing the Epson 4010. I'm very glad we did! We love our new projector! We use it in a dedicated theater room with no ambient light. The picture is amazing! It's not loud when it's running either. It is HUGE though! We mounted it on the ceiling.

This projector is huge. And it’s not light. But the superb picture quality more than makes up for these aspects. I use it outside for family move night on a huge screen with an Apple TV and Bose Bluetooth speaker. Outstanding experience. Although you can move the horizontal picture the vertical movement is limited so achieving the right projector height can take some effort. But well worth it.

Setting up a home theater? Now you can enjoy the ultimate 4K experience for your DIY Home Theater with the Epson Home Cinema Projector available at Best Buy.
I am so excited about this home projector. Being able to enjoy the ultimate 4K experience in your own DIY home theater elevates the experience and enjoyment of your home theater. The Epson Home Cinema 4010 4K Pro-UHD Projector has Advanced 3-Chip design and High Dynamic Range which means theater like projection. Most of our households have cable television and/or a blu-ray player that we use to watch programs or movies as a source of entertainment. But the ultimate 4K experience is watching your favorite sports team beat their competitor using the Epson Home Cinema 4010 4K Pro-UHD Projector for the ultimate game experience.
Take a peek at the clarity the Epson Home Cinema 4010 can produce in your home. The colors are vivid and the size is bigger than life on our bedroom wall!
The Epson Home Cinema 4010 4K Pro-UHD Projector displays your favorite shows, movies, sports, and games the way they were intended to be viewed – on a big screen with bright full-color stunning resolution and free from objects and distortions normally found in other projectors. Your family and friends will enjoy the exceptional viewing experience that the Epson Home Cinema 4K Pro-UHD Projector gives your movies, sports, and games.
The few requirements needed to set up and enjoy the Epson Home Cinema 4010 4K Pro-UHD Projector is a room or area where you can place the projector at least ten (10) feet away from the wall or screen, a HDMI cord and a blu-ray player or streaming stick to feed content to the projector.
We set up the projector in a spare bedroom that my husband wants to make his media room. As you can see, the picture is amazing just projected on the wall, however, you can also use a projector screen if you do not have a solid wall or if you want to take your projector outside or to another location.
Depending on the size of your room or the location you plan to use the projector, it can be mounted from the ceiling or on a wall shelf. The Geek Squad® at your local Best Buy would be happy to help you with the best setup option for your home.
I was surprised to learn that the projection area ranges from 50” to 300”! How cool is this when you want to have movie night outside (by the way – the garage doors make a great projection screen)!
If you enjoy going to the movies, you will love this projector. The large screen provides a theater experience at home. Winter is coming soon, followed by for most of us..months of stay inside weather. The Epson Home Cinema Projector would make an awesome gift for the family. I've never been so excited to receive a new piece of technology as I was this Epson 4010 Home Cinema. And, it doesn't disappoint! Children of all ages, ours especially, were beyond excited at the thought of hanging with a group of friends and watching on the big screen. And I'm talking kids from four to fifty-four.
It's unanimous among our group of 10+ families: the picture quality and depth of color from the 4K capability on the Epson Home Cinema is BETTER than the movie theaters.
It's not cheap. Coming in at $1999 before tax, it's a big investment. However, the rewards are priceless.

Full Disclosure: I spent months researching this. I desperately wanted to buy the Epson Home Cinema 4000 because of the price point but the reviews indicated that there was an issue that caused it to, basically, die. I looked at some of the Optoma's but was not satisfied with what I read in the reviews and I felt better about the technology in the Epsons, with which I was already familiar. When reviewing the 4010, I did not find any bad reviews and I actually found out that issue on the 4000 was rectified before the 4010 was released. I had to pull the trigger.
My previous projector was the Epson PowerLite 8100 from 9 years ago. It was 1800 lumens and I could not have any ambient light without losing picture quality. That is particularly tough in my living room as I have 4-wide glass patio doors. I do have curtains that can block most of the light coming in, however, not enough to watch TV on the 8100 with satisfactory picture quality during the daytime. So, the 4010, I believe, is rated at 2400 lumens and I think maxes out at 2476 on the Dynamic color mode on the highest power setting. With the 4010 I am able to use the Eco power setting without having to block out all of the ambient light and the picture quality is AWESOME. I want to keep writing about how excellent the picture quality is but given all the research I had to do, I hope I can save you some time. This is the one, go get it!
