The Epson LS650 is a winner!

Introduction Epson has been a major player in the world of everything from basic projectors for meetings to gaming projectors. Going in Having already owned three projectors, this wasn’t new territory for me. What was new was the fact that this was a short throw laser projector. This means that unlike long throw projectors that throw an image to a screen typically behind you, a short throw projector can be placed a few inches away from the screen and will project an image. What comes in the box? Out of the box you get the projector, a power plug, a remote, a pair of AA batteries, and documentation. Minor wins The Yamaha speakers on this projector are actually surprisingly nice. Typically you want to connect some sort of awesome sound system to this projector, but if you’re having a movie night on your deck and use this projector outside, the sound is more than suitable. I put it on high, and it wasn’t fully immersive, but I would say it was pretty impressive. Major wins The picture on this projector is absolutely terrific. I wouldn’t say that this comes close to any OLED, but for a projector, you get great colors, and pretty deep blacks. I’m guessing it’s from the HDR10. Once you pair it with a nice screen, then you’ll really get that awesome movie theater experience. You can play with the settings until you find the picture setting that you like. Another major win is having more than one HDMI port. Usage First, this projector is quite large. It’s roughly 30% bigger than my largest projector. It isn’t however, heavy. It’s surprisingly light. Once you set up the projector and pair your remote to the projector, it’s time to turn it on, and go through the setup process. You setup wifi and download specific apps. This is an Android powered projector. If you have a Google account, and most of your streaming site passwords will be saved in the password manager. I was able to set up all of my apps with my logins and password in minutes. You have a lot of options to play with in just getting your angle right. You can choose whether you’re projecting to a bare wall or to a screen. You can have it try to autocorrect the angles, or you can manually adjust it to your liking. There’s a focus sliding adjuster on the right side of the projector. You also have picture and sound options to your specific liking. The default natural, vivid, dynamic, and cinema settings aren’t bad. You can still tweak the settings on the default settings. After about 10 minutes of playing with the cinema settings, I was quite happy with the movies I tested. The projector’s Android OS is pretty fast. My current projector is also an Android projector, and it’s not nearly as fast and responsive as the LS650. The remote is just as responsive. You can use your voice to “talk” to the remote to perform tasks. I’m old school in that I just like scrolling through my app. I will admit that it is nice when I can press the mic button and say something like “Find such and such movie,” and it gives you options. When I initially turned it on, I heard a fan noise. I thought “great, this shouldn’t be distracting.” Surprisingly, it really wasn’t. It gets really loud when you raise the brightness, but other than that, it was at a pretty low decibel level. Once I connected my surround sound system to the projector, I never heard the fan ever again… except for quiet/ambient moments in a movie. Minor issues Nowhere on the quick start guide does it tell you what the USB-A ports on the back do, as well as the service port (Mini USB-A port). Major issues I really do wish they included at least one HDMI cable. Yes, this is primarily a streaming projector, but it would be nice to have a HDMI cable so you can plug in your laptop and do some gaming. Primarily for People may have limited spacing but still want a huge screen. It’s definitely for movie and gaming lovers. This is for people who have an older long throw projector and want something faster, and don’t want to worry about mounting a projector from their ceiling, or worrying about how far you have to place the projector to get a large screen size. Probably not for People that already have an established movie setup that aren’t interested in streaming through the projector directly. All in all The Epson LS650 is an awesome projector. It’s easy to setup, you have a lot of picture and sound options, and you can plug in 2 HDMI devices. It outputs a beautiful 4K/HDR picture, and the Yamaha speakers are actually quite nice. It’s convenient to place a projector in front of you, and never have to see a shadow as someone walks by the projector. Those days are over. I would definitely recommend this projector.

Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 Smart Streaming Laser Projector - White Summary: Big, but beautiful display. Pros: * Display. The display is why you buy this unit. This display certainly doesn't disappoint. It is bright, it is easy to configure, and it makes me happy. * Ports. The available ports are adequate for what I imagine most use cases might be. * Aesthetics. This unit looks great for a projector. It isn't as svelte as I'd like, but it should fit well with most decor. I chose a white version because I didn't want it to stick out against our lighter color pallete. * OS. The integrated Google OS is surprisingly responsive and it smartly makes readily available some of the top streaming platform apps. * Remote. The remote is a bit large, but it does everything you need it to including adjusting the units aligntment/display/audio. It connects to the projector via Bluetooth so line-of-sight is not an issue with controlling the unit. * Audio. Surprisingly, the audio is full and more rich than I'd expect for being integrated. I plan on using a surround system, but until I get that setup, I am content to use the integrated audio. * Adjustable. This unit is easy to adjust and get the display leveled and sized just right for your screen. Cons: * Size. The unit is big. I had the measurements, but I'm always surprised at my lack of imagination. Though large, the unit will fit in well enough with most decor. Most projectors with these specifications are equally as large, but fit into slightly different form factors. Still, I've waited years before finally pulling the trigger and I am pleased with the decision. Use: This projector will replace our wall-mounted 75" LCD TV. We have been looking at projectors for years. Epson among many other brands. Epson consistently appears in the top of lists for value. I agree with this assessment now that I have one. Unfortunately, our retractible mechanized ALR UST screen arrived damaged and another unit is on the way. All of our testing was done against a plain old white wall as a result. Given the circumstances, I have to say that even without an ALR screen to enhance the visibility of the projection I am quite happy. Due to the reflective high-gloss coating on our LCD TVs glare and lighting have always been issues. But since our LCDs weren't OLED we experienced weird banding in our TVs for low light scenes/images. The projected image is bright during the day and in the evening. The wall we're using for the test is right next to our saltwater aquarium, and a window, pendant lighting, and a sliding door to a small patio. Tons of light comes through and I can very easily watch the projector without any complaints. We have another Epson projector. It's only 1080P. We used it to set up big screens when we had big events to watch in social situations. But it is a much smaller unit and therefore not as bright. Also, obviously, not 4K. The unit still runs well. We have high expectations for the LS6500 as we move to streamline our living room by removing the big black rectangle hanging on our wall. Now we can at least display artwork on the TV wall while not in use. If you're on the fence, and have been looking at UST projectors, definitely consider this unit. I highly recommend it.

Excellent 1st experience with an UST projector

As the title states, this is my first experience using a UST projector as I have only used standard ones from a few years ago. I love the look and convenience of how it performs in my living room. Unboxing ------------------------------------------------------ Inside the box is a well protected LS650, paperwork taped to the top and a small box containing the remote, batteries and power cable. Use care when lifting out the projector and setting it down to it's destination. It has a multiple layers of plastic protecting it that must be removed and also the side with the power button and cover. Setup ------------------------------------------------------ I did not elect to just use my wall for the picture as texture and paint could effect my quality though some people have just fine experience. I instead paired it with a 120 inch projector screen and I couldn't be anymore happier with the results in my living room. For those new to the UST market, the projector is actually seated below and in front of your selected preference for a screen. With mine, I will give you from approximations so it can give you an idea on how I achieved my 120inches. The top of my screen is at 94". The BOTTOM of the projector to the floor is ~39". From the BOTTOM of the screen to the top back edge of the projector is ~31" in height. From the screen itself to the actual projector is ~42" apart. But also do not forget the projector in depth is another ~40 inches so make sure whatever you set it on has enough clearance. Once setup is done and powered on, you are greeted with Android TV getting you started and options on what apps to download to get you watching. But before that, during my setup I noticed the bottom 60% of my screen was looking great but the top was blurry. No problem here for an easy fix. On the side with the power button, just remove the cover to gain access to the slide bar to adjust sharpness. Once I got it to where I wanted, the picture looked amazing. Also you can download the Epson app and use that for adjustments, but I just used the included remote. To fill the screen 100%, there is a button on the very bottom left to change where to project all 4 corners. After that, it was time for watch parties. 1 thing to note is the inputs. You get 2 HDMI 2.0 ports. 1 is a regular input and 2 is the eARC for those wanting to use an external sound option. Performance ------------------------------------------------------ Whether it is during the day or at night, the 3600 lumens the UST projects does not hinder my viewing experiences at all. Mind you, you can change the brightness (of course this will effect laser life) but I have never touched it since setting it up. You can see from the pictures I took (my phone camera does NOT do the quality justice, so please take my word for it) that daytime and nighttime was excellent. The Martian was shot during the peak of the afternoon with just my blinds closed and you can still see everything just fine. Shogun and Fallout 4 was shot during after sunset and during midnight and the quality is perfect. Let's address 4k. For those not tech savvy, just know there is 2 types of 4K projectors; Native and Pixel Shift. In my honest opinion, there is no difference I can tell with the naked eye. The LS650 uses Pixel Shift technology to project multiple 1080p pictures with the total pixel count to hit 4K. Native is by far a lot more expensive but shows all pixels from the same source. My PS5 and Series X had checked every TV diagnostics box except for 4k 120 (projector is 4k 60) and Dolby Vision. This is perfectly fine and I had an absolute blast gaming on this thing. My friends and I could not tell this is was a non-native 4k display so I believe most others won't either. The picture quality is outstanding. Fan noise. Now admittingly, the fan ramps up during startup, but then calms down after the picture starts getting projected to the point of being non-existent. I've had 0 complaints about the fan noise during streaming or gaming. The only time I know it will get noisy is if you turn up the brightness so that way it can cool it down, but as I said above, I never changed it from out of the box. Sound ------------------------------------------------------ Now I will admit I almost let intrusive thoughts win when I was setting up the projector by pairing it with a soundbar, but I am glad I did not. I was genuinely shocked that the Yamaha 2.1 speakers built in were actually REALLY REALLY good. I mean, you aren't going to throw raves with this thing, but the sound quality from low bass to highs were never distorted. Even during gaming, my friends complimented on the quality of the sound. You can actually get the speakers to get really loud and fill up a room quite easily. Even after a time, I still am just using the built in speakers as they perform great during movie nights or gaming sessions. For my 1st time using an UST, Epson gave me a super positive experience. I am in love with it and my friends are always wanting to come over and watch on it.

    True Home Theater Experience!!

I have been a projector user but the downside is trying to wire a projector on one side of the room to get to your screen on the other side of the room. Short Throw Projectors came onto the scene a few years ago to remedy that and the Epson LS650 has been an exceptional home theater experience so far!! SETUP: - I know this sounds like it shouldn’t be as important, but setting this projector up was one of my favorite parts about the projector. And that is because they make it so easy! They provide you measurements on how far beneath the projector screen and how far away from the projector screen your ultra short throw (UST) should be, but along with that they let you resize the image using just your remote or an app. It’s a simple “here are the corners, move the corners to the corners of the screen” function and it’s just SO easy to setup!! - I will also add that I set this up on a 110” projector screen for reference and it fit perfectly and would even go up to 120” if I ever decided to upgrade screens or just put it on a wall. PROS: - The Epson LS650 has Google TV built in which is a really nice feature. It allows you to connect to the WiFi for features like casting or downloading apps. I tried this out and thought it worked great! - However, I used an Apple TV for my streaming purposes and I can indeed confirm it produces 4K HDR10 quality. The frame rate is smooth along with that and I was happy with that high standard. - As far as picture quality, I was truly blown away! I have a 4K TV but there was just something about this level of picture quality that really impressed me. It had a high level of realism while having crisp focus, colors that pop, and nice balance. Really a cinematic experience! - Of course not just movies look good on this, I watched sports and did some gaming as well and both were really fun to watch! The size just makes it so immersive and brings you into any content you watch! - Lastly, the UST comes with a built in Yamaha speaker which is a great addition! It sounds nice and works well, and is nice functionality for those that might want to use that to minimize their setup or for those that might want to bring this on the go and use it outside. CONS: - The downside of an UST is depending on the screen size you want, you have to move the UST further away and down from the projector screen. Which just means you need to make sure you have sufficient space to set it up, but that is the trade off from a traditional one. - I also wish it had 3 HDMIs instead of just 2 for added functionality. - This projector produces “HDR10” as its standard instead of “Dolby Vision” or “HDR10+”. I wish it atleast had HDR10+ as more platforms are supporting this and it rivals Dolby Vision even more so. BOTTOM LINE: - The Epson LS650 UST brings a ton to the table to provide a true at home movie theater experience. It has a 4K HDR picture, is super bright with its high lumens, the colors and clarity look amazing, and there are perks that make it versatile for different needs. This is an excellent purchase for those interested in a home theater projector and want one of the best experiences you can get!

This review is for the Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 Smart Streaming Laser Projector. This is an ultra short throw projector. So this one sits right in front of your wall/screen you wish to project one. Saves room and no one can walk in front of the images being projected. And when a kid (I have 3) or someone get to close the unit can detect a person and turn off the screen as to not harm their eyes. Super cool feature. Design & Build The LS650 boasts a sleek and modern design, with a compact form factor that allows it to blend seamlessly into most living room setups. It's build quality feels robust, and the minimalist design with smooth edges and a matt finish gives it a premium look. Image Quality One of the standout features of the EpiqVision Ultra LS650 is its impressive image quality. Equipped with a 4K Pro-UHD 4K 2160p resolution, the projector delivers sharp and vibrant images with excellent detail and clarity. It has a brightness rating of 3,600 lumens, making it suitable for both dark and moderately lit rooms. The contrast ratio is also notable providing deep blacks and bright whites, which enhances the overall viewing experience. Sound Quality I was blown away with the sound that came from this unit. So much better than the built-in sound systems on all the other projectors I have owned over the years. It has an integrated Yamaha speaker system, which is quite a step up from the typically mediocre built-in speakers found in many projectors. The audio is clear and can fill a room effectively. For those who seek a more immersive audio experience the projector also supports external sound system via Bluetooth or optical output. Ease of Use I did have some issues trying to set up manually. But after downloading the app and using it for the set up it was very easy and straightforward. The ultra-short throw design means you can place it just inches away from the projection surface and still get a large image up to 120 inches. This ease of placement eliminates the need for a ceiling mount of long cables. It comes with a user friendly interface and a well designed remote control. Has most all of your favorite streaming apps built in. I haven't even used any of the HDMI or USB ports yet to hook up another device. Did I say the kids love it?... Cuz they do

This projector is high-end and uses new Laser tech in order to give it significant advantages over traditional projectors. It provides some pretty fantastic features and the best picture I have seen in any home projector. Pros: - The picture quality is top notch (see photos). 4k content was beautiful, and I even watched some old-school cartoons in standard definition. They really popped! - You don't need a pitch black room to use this projector. This tech allows for moderately lit rooms to still display the image clearly because of how brightly it projects. - With this projector, you no longer need to worry about where/how to mount it! It can simply be placed where a TV would be, roughly a foot from the wall, and the image will be projected up to a 120" diagonal. And since it is placed so close to the wall, you no longer have issues with people walking in front and casting shadows. - Most people will want to connect a soundbar via the HDMIarc or the optical port, but the onboard speakers (Yamaha) are really quite good! - This image seemed to auto focus, although there is a dial to fine-tune as needed. But I didn't need to tweak it ever. - There is less heat and noise than traditional projectors. You can barely hear the fan and much less heat is kicked out, which is super annoying with older projector tech. - Since the laser tech can be dangerous to look at, a safety feature detects when people get close and it shuts down the projection. This is great for folks with kids that don't know any better! - Android TV provides a convenient hub to run all of your favorite apps and stream your favorite content. It was easy to set up through my Google account. Cons: - With lesser projectors in the past, I have been able to project on the white walls in my home. But since this projector provides such a bright and crisp image, it was easy to see the texture of my walls. I'm going to need to get a projector screen, which is what most folks do with projectors anyway. This is the best projector I have ever owned, or seen in others' homes. It's certainly high-end and would be a great addition to any living room or media room.

The idea of an Ultra Short Throw Projector is a good concept. But how does it translate in reality? This is my 1st UST projector so I don't have anything to compare it to, other than my Epson Home Cinema 4000 projector, which has some similarities but is a standard long throw projector. I've really enjoyed that one but you do have to put it in the back of the room, and since I haven't mounted it to the ceiling, you have the obvious issues (blinding light if you look at it, heat near you that it puts off, noise, etc.) This UST puts off some heat and noise as well, though not quite as much of either. The long throw heats up my 17x20 media room over the course of watching a movie. This one I have noticed as much, but it's also a lot further away from me. It might still warm up a smaller room though. The biggest (obvious) difference is this projector sits in the front of the room near where it's projecting. You can stick it right up against the wall and get a 60" image. But no one buys a projector for a 60" screen. And this is my issue with this "UST" projector. To get the 120" image you need about 15" between the wall and the projector, which doesn't sound like a lot, but the almost 16" deep, so that's over 30" it's sticking out away from the wall. That's deeper than most media type furniture (TV stands, etc.) And if you have a surround sound setup with a center channel speaker you have to figure out where to put that. You could set it to the side I suppose, but the projector is not nearly 19" wide, plus it needs 4" of clearance on the rear and right sides and 12" on the left for proper airflow for the cooling fans. The size of and center of the image is all based on where the projector is sitting. So if you move it to the side the image will move to the side as well. There's no correction for that like you have on long throw projectors. And you can't put a speaker above it because that's where the image is projected from. If you have a smaller speaker and have it mounted on the wall or inset into the wall you might be ok. Otherwise you'll need to position it below the projector somehow. And for that 120" image, the vertical distance between the top of the projector (which is 6" tall) and where the bottom of the image is on the wall is 11". The top of the image will be 70" from the top of the projector. So if you have 8' ceilings or have a center channel speaker to deal with you'll be doing some math. If you don't have a surround setup the built in speakers are surprisingly decent. Yamaha makes some quality audio equipment and, while the built in speakers won't replace a larger, dedicated setup, they easily fill my 17x20 room. They even have some surround sound effect as well. There are minimal adjustments you can make to the audio, and while the bass is fairly decent it's limited, but that's due to the size of the speakers. So you don't necessarily need even a soundbar or external speaker to use it. Now as far as image quality, it does a pretty good job. I have mine projecting onto a wall rather than a screen. And the image is pretty much the same as the one from my Epson HC 4000. At night when it's dark it actually looks pretty good. With lights on or during the day the image gets pretty washed out. But we use it for movie nights so it's not really an issue for me. And ambient light rejecting screens can make a really big difference. But I don't think you're going to be able to replace your 4k HDR TV with it without a screen. And even then it's still probably not going to be as bright as most TV's. But that's just a limitation of most projectors, not just this one. There's not a ton of picture settings to change and honestly it's pretty good just out of box. And if you are using a wall and not a screen, there's actually a setting that will adjust the output based on the color temperature (white, warm, cool) of your wall paint. The main thing you'll need to adjust is shape of the projected image and this can be a little bit of a pain depending on how OCD you are and how much patience you have. You most likely will need to adjust the "squareness" of the image. It probably won't be a perfect rectangle at first, but more trapezoid-like. And some of the edges may be "wavy" instead straight lines. You'll need to adjust both, but if you have any wavy edges I would skip where you adjust the "squareness" and go straight into the option for correcting the waviness because when you go into the latter option it's going to reset any changes you've made to the squareness and make you do it again anyway... Hopefully this is something they can fix with an update but until then, save yourself the time. Also download the Epson Setting Assistant app when prompted. It actually works really well. It will only make adjustments for the wavy edges but it's really quick and corrects it really well. Just make sure you have the squareness how you want it first because you can't make changes to that after correcting the distorted edges without resetting all of the changes (both squareness and wavy edges). Again, hopefully something an update can correct. I do like that it uses Android TV so you can get all (most) of your streaming apps for watching content. The notable exception is Netflix. Why? I don't know. But I read online and it's an actual ommission. While you can download some additional apps from the Google Play Store, Netflix isn't an option. And I haven't found yet if you can download and install the app another way or not, so just something to know. I also like the minimalist remote but wish it was backlit (honestly all TV remotes should be in my opinion). So overall I'm not sure how I feel about this projector. There are things I like, things that are annoying but hopefully fixable with updates, then things I wish I'd known or realized before that I don't like. But those are mostly dependent on my setup/situation and not necessarily an issue with the actual product or performance of it.

Coming from the LS300, which had a good image but was held back by its HD native resolution, seeing my videos in proper 4K was immediately noticeable - while still essentially keeping the form factor. Setup was pretty straight-forward, but expect to wait a few minutes while the projector performs its initial system update. The remote isn't overburdened with buttons; however I had some initial confusion with its rotary iOS-like button wheel - that's really just directional (at least from what I can tell). My favorite feature of this projector is its assisted screen correction. Essentially, with an Epson support app, you can use your phone or tablet camera to line up (deskew, etc.) the projection on your screen. When I tried the process, the results were really good, although I had some alignment artifacts, but that was due to the screen, itself. And on that note: The ultra short throw, LASER projectors really require good screens in order to get the best display. This means an Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screen (which tends to be expensive) that's taught and without imperfections (because the projector will pick it up). For my part, I have a rather cheap ALR roll-out screen, but the image was still very nice! And yes, you can still use this projector on a basic white screen, but you won't see the full potential of the projector's image quality.

The LS650 is an amazing ultra short throw projector. The 4K PRO-UHD picture is sharp, bright (3600 lumens), and colorful—even in daylight. Setup is super easy, and you get a massive screen from just inches away. The 3LCD tech means no rainbow effect, and the laser light source is quiet, reliable, and long-lasting. Built-in speakers are just okay, but pair it with a soundbar and it’s a home theater beast. Pros: • Crisp 4K image • Bright and vivid • Easy setup • Long-lasting laser Cons: • Speakers could be better Worth every penny if you want a premium movie or gaming setup at home.

This project makes watching TV like a cinema experience at home. The color is vibrant, and the installation was easy.

the HDR is not so good as explained, the projector is making so much of noise and it's good at the night time but not as good as explained on day light.

I'm very happy with this. Unit has excellent video quality. I just wish I was able to connect more to one Bluetooth speaker to it.

The projector is nice looking and lighter than I expected. It has a motion detector to shut off the projection if you get too close. The setup process was easy. Using the Epson app to adjust the picture worked incredibly well. There are also options to use the remote to adjust the picture and remove any waves or correct the shape. The speaker is amazing, so much so that you could comfortably use it without a soundbar or other audio equipment. This makes it great if you wanted to move this around. I suspect most people will use this connected to audio equipment and it works flawlessly with control of a Sonos soundbar. There are many options for adjusting level and focus. The picture is very bright and having the Android operating system on board is great. Using on a white wall showed a bright picture in a darker room. Using with an ALR screen in a room with some light has been amazing. So much that I’m using it to replace an LED TV. There is a bit of noise, but for a picture this large you generally sit further away making it less of an issue. This is not a true 4k picture, marketed as “4K PRO-UHD”. This uses a 1080p picture to shift pixels to recreate a 2160p resolution. This is expected in a projector at this price point, and doesn’t create a clear picture, but the fact that they are marketed as 4K bothers me (every projector manufacturer does this, not just this one). Over all, this is a really great projector that is easy to recommend
