My husband bought this scanner with me kicking and screaming and we both love it. The first night I had it I stayed up all night scanning old pictures and restoring them. I have been using some of the restored pictures as gifts because they look that good!!!

As an experienced professional in the publishing field, I find the v500 the best investment I have made in years. I have gone thru a number of scanners starting from the first HP scanjet to higher end units and low end units as well as mid price units. The Epson Perfection V500 is quite incredible. You can scan a picture to your hard drive or with one button scanning, email to a friend or client or create a pdf from one button.
For the more experienced you can setup all kinds of options including descreening of newspaper or magazine images. The speed depends on your resolution. If you scan at 300ppi you will have a quite fast scan, the higher you go the slower it gets, but remember, if you want quality or if you want to enlarge a small photo this will do it with quality.
Digital ICE is a nice builtin option as well as Abbyy FineReader 6.0 Sprint is one of the best OCR programs out there with great accuracy and ease of use.
I use both Mac and PC so whatever platform you have the V500 will work fine.
Just remember your memory and hard drive space also have something to do with speed.
As far as slides and film strips go, yes you can scan both in small quantities. I feel this works fine, of course if you are scanning lots of slides on a regular basis, this might not be the unit for you. But when you need it you have it.
I give this 4 stars because it deserves it in more ways than one.

Bought to help scan in family photos. It is a long-term project, just a few each day. The Epson scanner does a great job recognizing the photos, 35mm slides, and negatives.

My 5 year old Visioneer 9020 died so I first bought a Canon 8800F but returned it because I could not get a clear scan no matter what I did. Bought this and have been nothing but happy with it so far. Everything I have scanned has been very clean and clear with good color matching. I should have known to make this my first pick since I have an 8 year old Epson 1160 printer and a 3 year old Epson all in one; both have been flawless with great results and I have never even had to clean the heads on the 1160 model. I highly recommend this scanner for all but the extreme cases. Great job Epson.

It is a nice scanner, does a good job on documents and I've scanned about 100 35mm B&W and color negatives with great results. The included Adobe Photoshop I really really like. Only one small complaint; the film holder is a bit flimsy.

So far so very good with this scanner. I've scanned dozens of photos and hundreds of slides so far. It scans 4 slides at once and set to 3200 dpi it only takes about 3 minutes to do it. Comes with Photoshop elements which is more software than I'll ever need. Overall I'm very happy with this scanner. I would have given 5 stars but it came with lint or dust on the inside of the glass from the factory.

Great for Negatives

I got this right after Xmas, mainly for scanning negatives. So far they have all come out great. If the negative is a little bowed, put the 'crown' up, if you don't, you will get some distortion in the image. Make sure to select the size you want prior to finalizing the scan. Can't wait to try on older photos to see how the color restore will work.
The only thing to improve would be to add a negative feeder and bump up the speed a bit.

Great Scanner, scans negitives from any camara, allowing you to print your pictures at home, makes old pictures look new with size variations, has picture backup also repairs cracks in pictures plus many other options. Scanner can be slow making it time consuming, this also depends on quility your looking to get, settings, size, well worth its price for the work it does. If your looking for a more professional easy to use scanner then chose this one, you won't be sorry. Give old photos a face lift, then move to a CD-disc for years to enjoyment.

I was so glad to see this product on the market, I've been wanting to transfer our old slides onto DVD and now I'm able to, thanks to this scanner! I've scanned hundreds of slides now using the color restoration and digital ice technology features. The results are amazing! My slides range from the 1950's to the 1980's and the finished product looks like the pictures were taken yesterday! Truly amazing product! I would highly recommend this to anyone.

It´s a good scaner for printed material

it is a good scanner for printed material, good color, easy setup
I bought this scanner to scan photos, 35 mm negatives and documents. It works great for photos and docs but is useless for negatives.
when you scan negatives, at any resolution, scans are unfocused and images are blur
Don´t buy if you want scan negatives
Frames for films are fragile and don´t provide good support for negative .Frames has control marks, then, you can´t use a strong support like glass or acrylic.

Sof far so good. I've only used it to scan a check to deposit to my bank. Hope the slide scanning function works but haven't tried it yet. Set up was quick and easy. I'm delighted so far.
