V600 review and my experience

The Epson V600 is great scanner for a multitude of reasons. If you need it for single document scans, you could get away with a cheaper scanner but the quality of scan in this scanner is amazing. Apart from that, it works well as a photo scanner as well if you want to digitize photo books. I personally use the V600 for film scanning and although there are better but more expensive ways to go about film scanning, it is a good way to get my foot in. The problem really only arrives in the film scanning software. As of now, Epson Scan 2 is only available for MacOS users and it greatly reduces the time for scans in higher resolutions, with Windows being my main operating system, I can only use Epson Scan 1 and I find myself waiting 15+ minutes for 12 (twelve) 35mm exposures at 6400 DPI. Other than that, this is a great scanner for anyone looking to do sharp scans of anything really. And for those using this for film scans, The Epson Scan software comes with its own negative coloring but I find that the colors usually don’t come out the way I want them, but can be fixed in whatever editing suite you prefer to use.
Pictured are some of my own film scans using the V600 after color processing on Lightroom

I bought the Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner to digitize Kodachrome slides and color and B&W film negatives.
After successfully scanning over 500 film images, I am favorably impressed with the V600 - especially given the cost.
The scanned images are very true to the originals. With a little practice and investigation of how the scanner captures images, I am very pleased with the outcomes.
Two considerations:
Learn how to best capture your particular images. Some of the features are less than intuitive, but can be easily learned. A bit of patience is handy. Understand the more images scanned and the scanned resolution will determine how long the scanning actually takes.
Second, the supplied Epson photo editing software works, but I recommend shopping for a more recent photo edit software in the $50 - $100 range if you want to do a really great job of improving scanned images.
Overall, I readily recommend the V600.

Let me start by saying I am a photo snob and am mainly using it to scan 35mm and 120(Medium Format) film. The film holders the scanner comes with come be a bit more durable and could clasp better to the film but they work(4/5). For a better film holder use the Lomography Digitalizer 35mm or 120. The quality of the scans are worth it though, when set to 2400 dpi you can't expect much better for the price(saying that in a positive way). I would buy one again if this one ever breaks on me for any reason.

This is a great scanner. Very easy to install and operate. Can scan in both color and black and white, negatives and prints. Documents too. I am extremely happy with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone. I’ve included a picture from a scanned negative, which shows the quality of the transfer at 300dpi (can be adjusted).

I have several hundred stereo slides that are over 60 years old and I wanted to convert them to digital before they degrade any further. This scanner is amazing. I figured out how to scan two at a time. I then use my picture software to crop & enhance them. I plan to put them on a thumb drive and give each of my siblings one for Christmas. These photos are from our farm in 1957.

Great scanner. As a lifelong photography hobbyist with thousands of prints, negatives, and slides, I have used older Epson scanners in the past with quality success. This scanner (although it’s been around for some time) does a great job. Not a huge fan of the software (I’ve also installed some 3rd party options), but have had no issues using with my Windows 11 Pro machine. Beats the heck out of duplication using a phone app and lots easier than using a DSLR or mirrorless camera to do duplication.

Overall, I would say this was a good purchase, however it takes up so much space and is absolutely massive compared to other flatbed scanners. I bought it solely for the purpose of scanning film negatives, which it does very well. Compared to other film scanners though, this is about 10 times the size.

This is the best scanner I have ever used, and I have used a lot; been doing photography for 30 years, it scans everything from negatives to film slides, to photos that are old. The scanner has a great ability to scan many negatives all at once with the negative holder that comes with it. Also the transfer is very easily done through ICE and Silverfast and is easily transfered onto my hard drive or MacBook. It is really amazing to see all my old images come to life agin digitally!

Amazing scanner for the price! Easy to use and am able to scan old pictures, film, and slides I couldn’t do with my other devices. If you can afford a major professional system this one is very good to get you going for an affordable price.

This scanner has been used for several weeks now with a few flat prints and hundreds of 2x2 slides, many of which were 60-80 years old and not stored in the most ideal conditions for 20-30 of those years. My family and I have been quite pleased with the outcomes of color restoration and scratch/dust removal by the software when operating in Auto mode at 600 dpi. Not all imperfections have been removed and the color is not fully restored but it's been remarkable how much better than expected the results have been. I have used the additional software that came with the system only a little bit and not enough to comment yet. Overall, this system has performed strongly to expectations. For full throughput of 4 slides at a time at 600 dpi, it operates at 75-80 seconds per slide. Straight forward software operation.

I've used the Epson V600 to scan color photos and negatives and black and white negatives. In every case. It is speedy even scanning at 600 dpi. The light it uses to scan negatives requires no warmup time.
Each scan is flawless; only rarely do I have to adjust the brightness and contrast curve, and only on a previously "impossible" negative (the church ceiling lighted only by windows is just as it was scanned, with no corrections.) It's like it does all the thinking for me.
The spot removal function works wonders, though it does add considerably to scan time. so you need to keeps a dusting brush handy if you have neglected your negatives.
I have not used the front-panel buttons because the way I placed it on my desk makes them unhandy, but the included EpsonScan software gives you total control of functionality.
I do worry about the film carrier, which seems fragile because Epson put slides and film function on the same carrier (see the second photo.) I would have preferred the solution of my previous Epson scanner, which had separate masks for slides, 35mm film strips, and 120 negs.
Well worth the price, especially if it has the stamina of my old Epson 4100 scanner, which gave me more than a decade of reliable service.

I’m an artist and was looking for something to scan art into the computer so I could sell. It picks up colors nicely, is easy to use and work with, and I now can upload my artwork to websites for sale and print.

Excellent product. There may be better, faster, easier out there, but for my needs, this is excellent. I wanted to scan a bunch of color negatives from the 60's, 70's and 80's to share with family digitally. Works perfect for this application. Negatives I have are 4 frames per negative, so can scan 2 sets (8 frames, 8 photos) at one time. The Epson software extracts each photo; works great. Quality is excellent as well. Just make sure you use the PREVIEW to make sure you placed the 'shiny' side down; otherwise they the photo will be washed out....

Unit is a nice scanner that works well with Surface Pro 7. The various modes are great.
My problem is Epson
Like most modern laptops I don’t have a CD drive. No where on the box under system requirements did it say one was needed to access the third party software that was free.
I contacted Epson and basically was told too bad: they even sent an email saying it does say “Optical drive needed to download 3rd party software”. When I sent them a picture of what the box I bought listed, there was no reply.
When will these peripheral hardware produces catch up with how computers are being designed? Maybe the software is poor, that’s not the point. Don’t say it’s included if it can’t be installed. Or be clear with what’s needed.
I could buy an external drive, I got that. It’s the principle.

I am using this scanner with MacOS 11.3,Big Sur. I had to download the drivers from the Epson support website as I knew I would. That process went smoothly and the scanner was up and running very quickly. I have scanned color slides, both Kodachrome and Ektachrome, color print negatives, and, color prints. I have been very happy with the ease of operation and scanning options available through the Epson Scan2 application. I have not downloaded or tried any of the other software utilities that are available on the Epson website.

Film photography was getting a little expensive for me so I decided to scan my own negatives which led me to purchase the v600 scanner. It was in my price range and I liked the color. Best decision I have ever made, I have more freedom on how my negatives are scanned and the scanner hasn’t disappointed me yet.

I purchased this shortly after finding out my grandma has a few weeks left to live. I wanted to start scanning all her photos so my whole family could have access to these sweet memories. This is a little more complicated to use (just watch a few YouTube vids, it will help!) but it really does the job well!! The color correction is AWESOME. See photos for an example

I was using a less expensive scanner and wanted better quality. This make and model was worth the cost. Not much adjustment needed . The ice feature is very slow but works well. I'm glad I bought it.
