I needed another radar detector for a new Corvette I had just picked up. I didn't want to get another Valentine V1 like I have built into my rear view mirror on another Vette I own, wanted to try something different. I researched brands from Escort since they're probably the most popular, along with Valentine, and decided on the Passport X70. Not interested in the online option Escort gives you with their higher priced models, and the X70 has everything I need and ranks the highest for detectors under $500. I picked up a Blendmount & MirrorTap, to avoid having to stick on my windshield & have a cord running across my center console.
I couldn't be happier with this unit, and it's range in incredible! It's alerted me every time there's police checking speeds with plenty of time to spare, literally a couple miles heads up. It's a solid piece of electronics, well built & good looking. It weeds out all the cars that have the blind spot assist, especially useful since so many new cars have that now. I've been using radar detectors for over 25 years, and Escorts are always at the top of the game! If you travel a lot on the highways, or just get a little heavy footed at times, you can't afford to be without one.

I drove from LA to SF and the accuracy of it in detecting radar is pretty good. It guided me well in reaching my destination within 5h and 30mins.

I think I paid around $300 to $350. Not the top end model, but I was leery to go with the under $100 models. Not sure if I could have gotten same performance our of the lesser priced models. I average about 1 speeding ticket per year on about 5 round-trip road trips per year. So, hopefully, this year's ticket $ went towards paying for this detector. It has saved me 5 times on two road trips so far. I recommend this product. It detects everything which can be noisy at times. Conveniently, it comes with a mute button on the plug for that episode of detection. You can monitor the bar graph to determine if radar detection is ongoing and forgo the noise. The mute button is on the plug so you don't have to reach too far to mute it (versus the device on your winshield).

This is my first Escort since their original detector and it does not disappoint. You can configure this unit to not detect X band which is not used in my state, also you can configure which K/KA bands it detects (one is not used in the US). You can configure the high quality OLED display to match the color scheme of your vehicle's gauges. Bottom line the configuration options in conjunction with the quality of the unit make it a recommended choice especially for eliminating false alarms from many sources (including the radar used by blind spot detectors, which rendered by previous Cobra unit next to useless). Only issue that I have is the Bluetooth features (which allow you to display your speed and the limit in that area) requires a special power cord which runs almost $100, with a subscription to Escort's service via a smartphone app. Sorry not paying $100 for a cable and a monthly fee for the subscription service. Feel the cable should be standard with the unit.

best radar detector for traveling

We have owned many radar detectors and this by far has been the very best. Most radar detectors go off continuously when driving through cities or small towns. Usually we disconnect it because it becomes so annoying. This particular one only goes off when there is cop. It gives plenty of notice and has saved us from getting several speeding tickets. We travel quite often and have found that it works in all of the southern states. It is a little pricey but is certainly worth every penny.

I like to drive like I am on the autobahn and this helps me not get pulled over. I have had V1 and this one does a little better at not picking up on all the new cars that have sonor (adaptive cruise control)

I bought the radar detector for my 2017 WRX STi and I have been using it for a few months now before I added my review. The detector seems to be as good as any other, the last one I bought must have been over 10 years ago and was a Beltronics for my 2007 WRX. I wish I had done more research or read more reviews, as previously stated in other reviews, you must have the WiFi wire to connect to your phone. Other drawbacks where after the initial radar detection alert the volume turns down, I am not sure if you can change that feature. I also would have liked a battery powered unit as the amount of devices in your windshield has grown. Over all Bestbuy had the item at a great price and I may just use it for my older car and get the one I want for my current car.

After reviewing a number of radar detectors the Escort Passport X70 seemed to be the best buy for the low end of a high end product. It works fine and haven't had any problems yet.

Do your research

I'll start off by saying do your research on price and functionality. I bought this detector for 237.00 at bestbuy after they price matched Amazon. As long as it's "shipped and sold by Amazon" you'll get the price match. Now as for functionality, there are several places in my daily commute that set the detector off, in the same place. "Auto learn" to get rid of the nuisance alarms would be great, but I bought the detector knowing it didn't have that function. But if that's gonna be a deal breaker for you, look at a different model. As for performance, there's been several times I've been disappointed with the range, where I've felt the detector went off too late to save me from a potential ticket, if I was speeding. There's been a few instances how ever where I've been impressed with the detector going off at least 1/4 mile before a hill and a cop hanging out on an off ramp on the other side. If I was a high risk driver looking for superior performance I would probably spend the extra $350 and get the max360 (assuming it's better performance). For an everyday commuter and occasional speeder this detector will do fine. I'm only saying this because I paid 237, for $300 I would probably wait it out for a sale. Don't make the mistake however and buy the 9500ix. It has great reviews and a TON of them, however they date back to 2007, the technology in it is almost 10 years old... The review asks if I would recommend it to a friend, to some I would, some I wouldn't.

only thing i dislike is that it picks up on every building with auto doors, every road sign that;s powered etc, but the actual radar detection is great and the range is very good. it will pick them up long before i can see them and keep detecting well after they are out of sight

So, I have used this for several months of extended drives, and I have to say, I am certain that it has protected me from getting trapped while speeding marginally (82 in 70 zone).
But... I worry that there is some new "radar" out there that it is not sensing. I know of two specific times that I have had no alerts, and last minute noted an officer in the median with a "gun" aimed in my direction, and on both occasions, they pulled out and pulled someone over who was driving nearby. I had no alarms at all. Even if they were using laser, I would have thought there would be something picked up from scatter.
Overall I am very happy with the purchase. My only true negative is that it has stored locations for "speed traps" that I did not enter (from a database I assume) and I cannot figure out how to delete, since those "traps" have not been manned every time I've driven by...

Has greater range than my belltronics and cobra detectors. Like the extra features and that you can change the level of brightness. The only thing I do not like is how the cord plugs into the side and that it is coiled up, which limits where you can place it without putting tension on it.

This is an amazing stand alone radar. It starts detecting before I see the police vehicle. It starts detecting from so far away sometimes, I think it's making a mistake and then the police car finally comes into view. I'm very impressed with it's detection distance. The only reason why I only gave it 4 stars is because on the box and on the comparison chart inside Best Buy, it makes it look like this unit comes with the capability to link to the Escort! Live app on your phone. IT DOES NOT! You have to purchase the extra Bluetooth plug/cord for $99.00 to be able to link the unit to your phone and the Live app. Which is the main reason why I purchased the unit. I actually only kept it, because I lost track of time and didn't have a chance to make it back to Best Buy until after the Return Policy had expired.

I was hesitant getting this radar or any other radar because i was skeptic about how this tings work specially new technologies come and goes. It helps a lot though not just getting out of a speeding ticket but just by being aware and reminded that I need to stay on the limit.

I finally switched from my 13 year old Escort 8500 which was top of the line back then but sadly was constantly picking up false alerts now with the change in radar technology. The X70 feels the same but much more quiet than it's ancestor. Plus love the change in the sound and voice prompts for alerts. The X70 now makes me want to eventually upgrade to the Max 360 in due time...

Bought the Passport X70 right after I bought my new car and it has saved me from more situations than I can remember. It picked up radar from a state trooper about a mile and a half down the interstate from me one night saved me from some hefty fines! For the price I can definitely say I have already saved more money from not getting a ticket then I spent on the X70.

Purchased this Escort radar detector a couple of weeks ago now, and let me say this, for the money this thing is awesome! I do a lot of traveling for work, which has me on the freeways, highways, and of course in cities. I have yet to have any issues with this detector seeing the various radar bands used, and it allows me to know when law enforcement is using radar well ahead of actually encountering the officer in question like it should. Comes with a nice zip up case to store it in, and I would recommend the hard wiring if you don't care for those standard power cords. All in all a great product at this price point.
