Nice way to keep track of your life

I keep a pretty weird schedule and end up running myself pretty ragged most days. so I figured I should quantify some of my madness. this device will keep track of my steps, calories, the number of flights of stairs i walk, and even my sleep. it has a run and an exercise menu both with their own section of activities which can monitor your vitals as you perform your workout. Supposedly the fitbit surge can change the music on you device, but i haven't been able to get it to work yet. Apparently the surge does this through something called AVRCP bluetooth profile, which your music program app needs to have in order to work. guess what? none of my music apps do so I'm basically out of luck. lame. i'm currently researching for an app that does. speaking of apps, the fitbit app works pretty good with device. it does occasionally have trouble connecting to the fitbit for a second or two, but usually when you hit the sync button a second or third time it eventually does connect. it does an fine job of displaying everything, though i felt the user interface could be a little better. especially when you want to add/change alarms. it is interesting to discover how i do day to day or week to week with everything I do (sleep, eat, weigh, how much fluids i consume, how often i'm physically active). you can even add your friends and see how you do compared to them. on a weekly basis you will receive an email from fitbit that will show your stats for the week and what your laziest day was. my advice for any new users setting up their account, don't try to log onto the program with your google+ account initially. you'll just screw yourself up and need tech support to reset your password especially when you try to set it up on your phone app since there's no way to log on via google+ (especially when you have 2 step verification and even if you use the proper method as prescribed by the google app password). First create your password, profile, and preferences and AFTER you have done all that you can then add your google+ to your account. it took two weeks for me to resolve my problems before i could really use my fitbit surge to its full extent due to this. Also try not to lose your charging cable or the dongle that comes with it as each are $20 if you lose them. Last time I looked I could only find it through the fitbit website itself, though ebay did appear to have a few for sale. The battery on my watch went down a little faster than the manual said it would, but I could only account that to where I work. I work in radiology at two hospitals and for some reason despite not having any programs on it seems to put a heavier drain to the battery. So I wanted an extra cable to carry with me. I didn't realize they'd be $20 though so I haven't gotten one yet. well, that's what i think. buy one and give your own two cents.

Been using my Surge for about a month now. Pros: - it is a watch, it even verges on being a superwatch; I have mine set up with the old fashioned analog face (and I get lots of questions & comments about it) - heart rate & sleep tracking without any additional equiptment, apps, nor fuss - quasi-reliable automatic exercise tracking (it knows when I've gone for an intentional walk or run without me having to give it input - however, see caveat below) Cons: - I have small size on an avg female wrist, and it's a bit clunky - I used to use Jawbone Up, and I find the Fitbit application much less helpful &/or motivational (?)... I dunno, I just miss Jawbone nuggets of wisdom and the ease of maneuvering the application - this is my caveat to the aforementioned "Pro" - when I walk/run (as opposed to either walking OR running), it only gives me credit for a portion of the time I'm out on the road - unless I use the "Begin Exercise" function with the buttons on the device, and select "hike," which I find annoying. Note, I have not taken the time to learn all the ways that I could tweak my user experience, but this is likely b/c I was spoiled by that nonrequirement with my Jawbone device.

I am an avid walker and typically walk 15,000 to 20,000 steps per day. I have worked my way through cheaper step trackers and I am now more serious about tracking my steps heart rate sleep etc. the surgeon has been beneficial in my efforts to meet my goals, in addition, I like the Fitbit fit bit mobile app. I especially appreciate the hourly step goals feature, challenge capabilities sleep tracking etc. on the downside, I wish there were more Adventure races, I thought that More would be added regularly and I'm tiring of going through the same Adventure races over and over.

Good watch but wristband is 2 small even for small

Initially, there were problems installing the firmware to the watch (did not know that firmware was not already present before I purchased). Not really a problem, except I didn't know it. So, the product info on their website was lacking. It took a lot of effort on my part searching the web to find out why the watch was not pairing with my bluetooth and/or working at all. Anyhow, some person somewhere out there on the web unknowingly solved my problem by suggesting to download an earlier app (for PCs in general) that made it possible for me to install the firmware that connected to the dongle which made the watch start working. BUT, there would still be 2 more days to figure out other problems. I was counting the days I still had to return it. Soon and strangely, the watch would not sync with the dongle. Amidst, I decided to give the old bluetooth a try again and voila, it connected. Go figure. And believe me, I was still ready to return it. So, now, everything at this point was paired and working. Yay! But because of all the conflict of using the old app to connect with the dongle and the new app with the bluetooth (no dongle needed), each with different features, I was torn between the two... Both have features the other does not have that I like... Okay, so, long story short... The real negative that still exists is my wristband is too limiting to adjust. The small is too small even for a small person like me. No leeway to move it up on my arm at all. I've already had a couple of minor rashes. Fortunately, they've cleared up but everytime I do a lot of sweating (and hello!, isn't that the point?), I fear I will have another rash. Good watch. But please, BUY THE LARGE WRIST BAND. My recommendation is good watch but please, GET THE LARGE. If Fitbit reads this, I'd appreciate you contacting me and allowing me to exchange mine for the large. Thank you and happy holidays to all.

Upgraded to this from my one that I've had for over 2 years. I needed something to track my heart rate and the phone notifications were a bonus. I chose the surge over the apple watch due to fitbits stellar customer service. I'm not sure I made the best decision. I noticed since using the surge, my steps decreased dramatically. So I wore it w my one for comparison. For 3 days, the step count was significantly off by 3k or more. I also developed a rash on my wrist. I take it off when showering and sleeping and didn't wear it at all for 4 days and it didn't clear up. Not sure I'll be keeping this tracker. I really wanted to love it, but 3 week in, the honeymoon is over. Pics of rash attached.

Fits good and easy to use. The IPhone app works perfectly. I would buy this again. I tried other, more expensive ones and couldn't read the small numbers (I'm 47). This does everything I need and more.. I've used mine about a month so far.

I love my watch! It motivates me to workout. However, the band is not strong. It started to separate after only a month. Fitbit replaced it with a new one which is great, but it shouldn't have fallen apart so soon. I didn't even use it in water.

    FitBit Surge

Even though this item seemed to have quite the amount of negative reviews, it seemed to fit what I needed and thought I would take advantage of the 14 day return policy. I wanted to replace my Garmin (pace, distance, elevation, calories burned) and really wanted what original FitBits offered (sleep and activity tracking like steps walked). One of the things mentioned was how big this 'watch' is. I am used to the older style Garmin (which mine died last year). My Garmin was as wide as the FitBit but higher profile. It doesn't bother me. All my friends and family know I am big into fitness so they don't even think twice about a gadget on my wrist. Not being a serious or competitive runner any more (eased up on trail races) but still serious enough to track stats, I was ok with negative comments of "not accurate". Something to me is better than nothing. One of the main things that attracted me to the Surge was the strapless heart monitor. I thought I was wearing my monitor incorrectly (came with my Garmin) yet was sized professionally and it was fine. But when doing miles of trails with a hydration pack on your back and the more than normal movement of road running, the wounds never healed and I ended with a slight scar around my torso. Body Glide didn't even help. Seeing my approximate sleep patterns rock. I guess I dont actually wake up as much as I thought... I am just 'restless'. Two things I do have trouble with: 1. The FitBit site is tracking nutrition. I still use My Fitness Pal and will still work on learning the FitBit one. I like the one stop shop. 2. The stairs do not always register but I think I have figured out to use my arms more... still testing the theory. I love the WiFi/bluetooth set up. I even bought the Aria. I am pretty synced...

I read a lot of reviews before I read this product so I was aware of the few kinks the product does have. However the pros outweigh the cons for me so I have really enjoyed this product. I was torn between the Charge HR (small) and the Surge (small) but I am really glad I went with the Surge because I have really made use of the extra options it has the offer. I was able to get most of the features of the Surge to pair with my Samsung Edge 6 phone quickly. However, I did have a little trouble with the text/call notification settings but I got it to work after about a half hour. I can have my phone charging downstairs in my house and I will get a phone text/notification in any of the rooms upstairs. This is a great feature to have when you or in a loud place like a restaurant or you are using the vacuum cleaner. There is a slight delay with the notification, but I have always been able to make it to the phone in time while it was ringing. The GPS seems to work great while running outside but you do have to wait about 30 seconds for it to pair when you stairs. The only con is that the treadmill tracker always falls short of my distance on the treadmill. This is something that Fitbit is still currently working on and hopefully they will come up with a solution sometime in the near future. I like the clarity, size and clearness of the screen. I read in some reviews that people had problems seeing the display but I have never had a problem whether I am in direct sunlight, indoors, or outside in the dark. The screen is a little big and bulky, especially for my small wrists. However, like any watch, I have gotten used to it. If you are torn between getting the small and the large, I would recommend going to the store and measuring your wrist against the blue size lines on the box. When I measured mine, I had a little bit of blue showing against the small so I went with that one. I have child size hands and wrists and the small almost doesn't fit me. I think most people will have to get the large. While running/jogging, the Surge did slip down at first but I have gotten used to placing it in a good spot that it doesn't move from (that fits the 3 fingers away from the wrist suggestion). The alarm feature works great! I have found it more soothing to wake up to versus my phone alarm. I like the flexibility of tracking my activities differently (weights, yoga, stairclimber, etc.). The ability to see heart rate and calories burned during my workouts has really helped me to reach my fitness goals (along with keeping a food diary with the My Fitness Pal app). The Fitbit works seamlessly with so many other apps. I currently use it in conjunction and have linked it with with My Fitness Pal, Runkeeper and the Retro Fitness apps. As you can probably tell, I am really happy with my purchase even though I was hesitant to spend so much money on the product. Even though I still feel it is a little expensive, I have lost weight/fat and I have really enjoyed using the product. If you can deal/live with the cons and love the pros, this product is probably right for you too.

I was so excited to get this watch because of all the features but it is to huge to wear throughout the day to correctly track all my activities. I love to run/workout so I wanted something to track everything to include my sleep. Wearing it while sleeping was a pain and uncomfortable. After a week I decided to return it because it was just too bulky. I loved that it had the gps and heart rate monitor which seemed to work perfectly though. The app/website was great as well. I would totally buy this watch if it was smaller/slimmer but as is I wouldn't recommend because of the size. I give this a 3 star only because of all the useful features.

I had been looking at getting an activity tracker for a few months. After ready a lot of different reviews for different trackers I ended up going with the Surge. It has a good balance of health monitoring and tech. Heart rate, steps, floors climbed, distance traveled and calories burned are all available directly on the watch. It uses the same vibration tech that the Pebble watch has (the Surge replaced my Pebble). You do not have as many watch face options as you would with other "smart watches" but you do get text message and incoming phone call notifications as well as the ability to minimally control your music on your phone (Play/Pause and Skip to next track, no volume control or going back to previous tracks). It also has GPS for tracking outdoor activities as well. Battery life could be better however it charges really fast (I normally charge it ever morning while I am showering and it will be at 100% within 20 minutes). All in all, very happy.

Was a gift and they love it. It works well and is fairly easy to use. It is easy to see. It is not waterproof so you have to plan ahead for water activities. It charges well and holds a charge too. It has an easy to use dashboard on computer. It is pricey. It is fun to wear. It needs to be waterproof. It could be thinner. It would be nice to have exchangeable bans. It should be cheaper.

I have had this about 5 days. It's a great overall fitness watch. I have used it for a Run (GPS) worked great, for spin class and walks to date. The wrist based heart monitor works well. The battery life is as expected / advertised. Two reasons I gave it 4 stars vs 5. To date you can not get the back light to stay on, which I needed for an early morning run in the dark. You have to touch the watch face or button and it lights up for a few seconds. My hope is they will add this feature with a program update. Second, I am on the edge of a small and a large and wish they had a medium size. Overall I would recommend this watch.

I love this watch! I really wanted something with a heart rate monitor built in. This does everything I need it to do. I love that I can start a workout then check my stats after. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is, I wish I could change the band out. I wish the face was a little smaller(I have small wrist and hands). And I wish it was 100% water proof. I have my hands in water all day and have to be very careful not to have it submerged for too long. Other than that it's a really good fitness watch.

I was super excited to use my Surge. Rushed home, connected Surge to laptop, paired it up with iPhone and was ready to go. Scrolled over all the features and was very excited. Set my profile up and started getting back on track with my fitness life. After wearing Surge for few minutes i could tell i am wearing uncomfortable band that is tight on my wrist i am a women and had size small wrist band. (I am 130Lb 5'6). Edges of the strap seemed to be irritating my skin, but i figured i will get use to it. Never did, watch felt too small, rubber started to coming off and strap looked like a pencil eraser. I took it for a run connected easily to GPS i was able to see map and all great stats for my run/walk. Next day i used it at the gym unfortunately as soon as i started sweating on elliptical machine the heart rate monitor stopped working- according to my watch my hear was no pumping :) On a third day i took it for a trail run - great features, nice stats, good meal tracking, etc. I worn it to work to hit my step goals etc. however after 3rd day i started to get tired of it, i was constantly reminded by its weight and uncomfortable strap that i am wearing it. It is impossible to have a long sleeve over it without watch catching on it. I did not wear it all day long and on a 3rd day i got itchy skin under the strap, took watch off rush was gone. Came back after i put watch back on. 4th day i left it on a table, 5th day i packed in a box and took it back to best buy. I loved all the options, the design needs improvement. It works great with your phone. I recommend trying it at the store, yes you will have to open the box but why going back with return if you can just try it out. I hope Surge will improve over next few months/years it has big potential but it is not quite there yet. Sport watch should not stop working because of sweating during workout. If you are a strict runner i would look for something else at this point. Good Luck Fitbid Surge.

I like most of the features of the Fitbit Surge. It is a little larger and thicker than I really like, and the battery does not last quite as long as I'd hoped for. Other than that it is great to keep me motivated to move more and to keep track of calories burned, steps taken, heart rate and sleep pattern. Except for charging and showering, I have not taken it off since I got it a couple of weeks ago. Nice to be able to see at a glance how far you've walked, calories burned and other health related information. I track foods eaten online.

So far it seems very accurate. Like the heart rate monitor caloric estimate. Wish the sleep monitoring was as in depth as the Garmin fenix, and wish the battery lasted longer on GPS mode but since I'm not biking or up to the extreme distances it does work well enough. As long as it's charged can do a half marathon with it.

I bought my Fitbit Surge in the store last year. I liked it's compatibility with my other devices and the GPS and sleep features were the biggest draw for me. I still like those features - a lot. My beef with this sports watch is the lack of insightful engineering and durability in the watch itself. It has an extremely high profile on the wrist and the tail end of the band hangs up on everything I slide my arm across. Reaching in the car to get groceries, the lanyard on my kayak, the lip of my standing desk at work (for pity's sake). Over time, the band has torn away on the inside because of the repeated snagging and moisture now gets into the face every time I sweat. I paid $250 last year and the idea of replacing such a high ticket item after just 13 months is a deal breaker. My sister has an Apple smartwatch that she bought at the same time I bought this one and she has zero issues with the Apple product. So, I just ate crow and bought the Apple to replace the Surge.
