I bought the Garmin - DriveAssist 51 LMT-S 5" GPS primarily because it had two features/capabilities that I was seeking: trip planning and an integral dash camera. I need to visit a number of locations throughout my county every so often and I have a limited amount of time to do so. Previously, I had to locate each address on a map and, after plotting them all, figure out the most efficient order for my route to avoid backtracking and wasted time. That was time-consuming and frustrating. The trip organization function allows me to enter addresses at random and then, with a push of a key, put them into the most efficient order for me to visit. YEA!! The high-definition dash camera was something I’d been wanting. It also provides a certain amount of security by automatically saving imagery in the event of an accident/sudden stop. This is a good feature. Other key features are Forward Proximity warning; lane departure warning; changes in speed limit; and “traffic is moving” alert (so you know when the backed up traffic in front of you finally starts moving because you were killing time doing something else in the car). An nice optional add-on is Garmin’s rear view camera (which must be purchased separately). NOTE: You will have to add a micro SD card for additional map and data storage as none is provided. A 4 GB micro SD card is supplied for the dash camera but I recommend you also replace the provided 4 GB video micro SD card with a larger capacity micro SD card to hold more video. (Make sure you get a card that supports video and not a slow data card.) This GPS device accepts micro SD cards between 4 GB and 64 GB. The higher capacity cards provide more storage for your money. It’s going to take you a while to get familiar with all of the features of this GPS (there are many) so be patient. Unless you live in/visit the “big city” there are a number of features you won’t use but that’s OK with me. I also strongly recommend you purchase a carrying case (none is provided) and be sure it protects the camera lens. You’ll also want to buy an AC power adapter so you can charge it and/or load trip information without being in your car. I bought my case and AC adapter from Garmin’s web site because I couldn’t find them at my Best Buy. Also, if you already own another Garmin GPS, you can transfer your favorites to the new GPS via the My Garmin web site. Recommended.

Like most people, I use my phone as my GPS, but I started to wonder what current GPS devices offered. I was an early adopter back in the 2000s, so I’ve seen these devices evolve over time. But what blows me away is the quality of the voice command and the camera system. I definitely would spend extra to buy one of these higher end devices, as it does more than give directions. It is virtually hands free, where I simply declare “Voice Command” and it turns on. The degree of accuracy has been inconsistent, but I figure it will learn over time. Surprisingly, it worked well in Hawaii, where every other letter is a vowel. As you arrive at a location, it gives a live view and points out the location for you. The interaction with your Smartphone still needs some work, but it is ultimately effective, although a little tedious because you have to turn on your app and have it connect with your GPS device. I wish the device was easier to connect and disconnect, like the magnetic connection on the DriveLuxe model. But ultimately, I went with the DriveAssist version for the camera. But I preferred the DriveLuxe ease of disconnection. The cord is somewhat awkward as well, as it is an old USB mini connector instead of micro. The unit does not hold a long charge, so you need to keep it plugged in more often than you’d want. I would buy it again, but wish I could try the DriveLuxe. The camera isn’t as important as I thought because it takes some work to turn it on.

We were using the trip setting, the camera and even hooked our phone in to the blue tooth within minutes of hooking it up. We were able to do hands free calling. This was especially an added bonus as we do not have Smart phones was one feature I really wanted and didn't realize this product had it. We went driving around our area which has very spotty cell service, wi-fi etc and found that we had excellent servce. Very pleased and can't wait til next summer to use the maps and the camera on the motorcycle.

It's great because it's easy to use. The camera is a very smart addition. In case of an accident, it keeps a recording of the incident and when connected to your smartphone, it will send a text message to let your contact know that you've been in an accident. The camera also gives lane departure warnings. It even lets you know when cars are a little too close. The navigation is easy to use and understand.

I switched to Garmin a few years ago when I found out my brand charged for annual map updates with fee and an additional fee for traffic. All of my Garmin's have been great and have functioned well. Their is my 4th Garmin as I keep upgrading every few years to get more features. All but 1 of the old ones still work great and accept map updates.
This one has a great camera, that is why I upgraded. Map update works off built in wifi without connecting to a computer. Traffic is kinda weird until you get used to it. I wish it used the cable to receive over clear channel radio as the older one did. You have to connect to your phone, turn on location on phone and access via Garmin smartphone link. This works but uses data to pull traffic then pushes it via bluetooth to the Garmin. Pretty good speaker to use for hands free calls as well.

This GPS has many great features, Large crisp display, Camera for video and stills, including lane and collision detection, bluetooth connection to smartphone to receive calls and text messages. Although you can only get free traffic update by downloading the smartlink app on your phone and connecting it to the GPS. That will chew through your data plan over time, so be careful.

Hello, and thank you for your review.
Though Smartphone Link is the default traffic solution for the DriveAssist 51 LMT-S, vehicle power cables with built-in traffic receivers are still available for purchase as optional accessories for this device, should you prefer them over the smartphone option.
A GTM 36 cable, which offers standard Garmin traffic, can be found with part number 010-01009-02. A GTM 60, which provides HD Digital Traffic, can be found with part number 010-01031-00.

I'm all over the city and don't have time to read maps. Using the voice command while on the fly is really useful. Occasionally I even use the blue tooth to send an address to the gps from my phone. Too convenient.

I have used a GPS navigator in my car for over 20 years. This is the best one I have ever had There are still some features i haven't tried, but the ones that I have used are the best. The camera gives you very good lane departure warnings and collision avoidance. Warnings for red-light cameras, speed limit changes, and curves also. The voice command feature is easy to use and accurate. If you use the camera app, the right 1/3 of the screen will give you a easy one-tap access to save the recording and take a picture of what the camera sees. Download the VIRB app to your phone or tablet to share and edit your recordings. Download the 34 page Owners Manual (PDF) for all the features. Great Navigator.

Easy setup, all the features it advertises are there. Took about 2 hours to update all software/firmware over wifi (I have a good signal in my garage.). Have not viewed a recorded video yet. Lane drift, proximity and "Go ahead" warnings all work. Paired with BT quickly, but that is not a feature I use. Does not come with a manual, but it is easy to get one online at Garmin for a detailed description of all features.

It works as a GPS. That's for sure. For anyone who has used Garmin before, the OS hasn't changed at all. The interface is the same. Very smooth experience though. It feels like a smart phone now.
The added function of being a camera though is a lifesaver. I wish I would have had it when I got into an accident and they sided with the other guy. It's pricey but it works well. The voice command isn't very good so i wouldn't use it. It also works with a Garmin add on backup camera so that's an added plus.

The combo of dash cam and gps is really great. I wish that it included the cord that is required to get traffic info because it requires the phone to be connected with the app running. I will probably shell out the 60 bucks for the cord because the traffic updates are great.

Great GPS. With all the crazy drivers out there, I wanted a dash cam. This has both a GPS and dash cam in one. The screen is crisp and very clear. It was easy to set up. Connecting the device to the mounting initially took a bit but once we figured it out, it is easy to get on and off. Voice commands are easy in traffic. Camera view when arriving at destination is very helpful in trying to find a house number. When we take a different road than the route shown, it recalculates quickly WITHOUT the voice repeating "RECALCULATING" over and over - nice. Lane assist is updated and show not only generic which lanes to be in but also shows you as your diving what the various lanes do - 1 goes right as another ends, etc. Lane departure assist and forward collision warning can be a little touchy, but it's not too distracting. Like the notifications there is a school ahead, animal crossing, curve, or railroad crossing. Only wish was that it would show both arrive time and distance remaining on the screen at one time. You can choose which appears and can touch the screen to see other info at a glance. We were used to this with our previous Garmins. We've used in on several trips and will definitely keep this one
