GoPro Hero 13 Hits Home-Run with HB-Series Lens!

I thought the GoPro could not really get any better than the GoPro 12 and was not sure it was worth the upgrade. I WAS WRONG. The GoPro Hero 13 hits it out of the park, especially with the HB-Series Lenses and Accessories. I like to shoot video in 24p timeline and in order to get the motion blur just right, you have to know how all the ND Filter settings work and interact with each other in order to get the perfect motion blur natural to the eye. I bought the HB ND-Filters set as well as the Macro Lens and the camera automatically detects the right settings for the light entering the sensor and even suggests small changes you could make. Instead of me having to spend time fiddling with setting and trying out different ND filters, I put a basic ND32 on in a very sunny day and it set the settings darn near perfect first time. Now anyone can get the natural cinema motion blur look right out of the box! Check out the two picture still right out of the camera footage of me spinning around in circles real fast showing how perfect the HB Series ND Filters and GoPro got the settings! The way to tell is if the still focus center of the shot is clear, but the outside areas are showing motion blur hen moving fast! GoPro Hero 13 nailed it! AND, the slow motion capabilities are second to none!

I’ve been using the GoPro Hero 13 mainly for surf sessions and hikes in Hawaii, and it’s exceeded my expectations. The image stabilization is next level — super smooth even when I’m riding waves or running. The 5.3K video looks sharp and crisp, and the colors are vibrant without needing much editing. The waterproofing is flawless, and the audio pickup is better than I expected for an action cam. Battery life is solid, especially with the Enduro battery, and the quick capture feature makes it easy to use even mid-session. The only small downside is the app can be a little slow sometimes when transferring footage. Overall, it’s the best GoPro I’ve owned — perfect for creators, athletes, or anyone who wants cinematic footage from their adventures.

Great camera, I’m a professional videographer, use it for behind the scenes, travel and use it for client work sometimes for underwater shots, capabilities are very good when you know how to properly use it. Amazed with the Protune LOG profile, we certainly live in a good time with this technology level. Here’s a frame captured from a LOG video color corrected in Adobe Premiere.

I wanted to upgrade my Black Hero 6 and I finally made the decision to do so with the 13. The quality, front screen, the abilities it has is amazing. Compared to other brands, I’ve had GoPro in the past with no issues. So, I stayed with GoPro.

*** Summary *** I’ve been using my trusty GoPro Hero 8 for the past few years, and the Hero 13 has been a noticeable improvement and upgrade in many ways. The Hero 13 offers numerous recording options, and except for really low-light situations, the quality is great with excellent stabilization, true-to-life color capture, and crispy footage. The Hero 13 suffers less from overheating issues, has a bigger and longer-lasting battery, faster transfer speeds, and the Quik companion app is intuitive and useful. Overall, it’s a solid and reliable action cam that’s worth the coin. _____ *Pros: -Good video quality and stabilization. -Slow motion burst modes are cool. -The interchangeable lenses are auto-detected. -Has GPS logging functions. -The Quik app is easy to use. -Magnetic mounting system. -New heatsink reduces overheating. -Improved Quick Capture function. -Faster Wi-Fi transfer speed. _____ *Neutral: -Low-light performance could be better. -The lens mods are pricey and can add up really quick. _____ *Cons: -None For my usage scenarios, which involve recording mountain biking, tandem board surfing, jet skiing, and amusement park rides and thrills, an action camera like the GoPro or the DJI Action have been indispensable in capturing and preserving personal and family memories. I still have my GoPro Hero 8 Black from 2019, and it’s been a reliable and stable workhorse all these years. With the release of the Hero 13 Black, I’ve finally upgraded, and I’m quite pleased with all the improvements the company has made. The biggest improvement for me has been the quality of the video. With 5.3K60, 4K120, and 2.7K240 options, the visual upgrade has been very noticeable. The HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilization produces excellently smooth and even footage, and although low-light situations are still a challenge for the Hero 13 Black’s sensor, it’s not as grainy and muddy as before. At least the colors appear more true to life and accurate. The HDR mode helps bring out the details in shadowy scenes, and I found it to perform its best under a bright environment. A neat feature I really dig is the Slo-Mo speeds on offer – 2x 5.3K/60fps, 4x 4K/120fps, and 8x 2.7K/240fps. It’s been really fun capturing my 9yo daughter do her Taekwondo kicks and punches and breaking boards. Other features I like about the Hero 13 is the built-in GPS, faster 5GHz Wi-Fi transfer speeds, the heatsink located underneath the camera that extends uptime and prevents overheating-related shutdowns, and the improved Quick Capture button. The Quik app is still intuitively laid out and easy to use, and I prefer using the app to make settings changes. Transferring photos and videos from the camera to the app or the phone is simple and fast. The battery life is okay, and the charging time is still on the relatively slow side. There is one new feature about Hero 13 that I haven’t tried out, and it’s the new interchangeable lens system that auto-communicates with the camera for automatic setup and calibration, such as the ultra-wide, macro, anamorphic, and ND filters. I’m mainly interested in the ultra-wide lens, and I’ll probably pick one up when it goes on sale, hopefully around the Black Friday timeframe. I’ve only had my Hero 13 Black for about a week, but it’s been so far so good. If my experience with my Hero 8 Black is any indication, then the Hero 13 Black will become a reliable and valuable companion that captures and stores our precious family adventures and memories for many years to come. I give it 4.5 Stars.

I have never owned an “action” camera before, although the name GoPro has been around for many years. Introduced in 2004, using 35mm film, it has seen many changes over the years, evolving into a rugged, waterproof, totally self contained, and with a large array of accessories to broaden your scope and versatility of photography. In its diminutive body you have a high resolution camera easily swapping between video, still photography, and an array of special effects. These include slow-motion, underwater scenes to 333 ft depth without an extra casing, videostabiliization of images, timelapse of star movement or fireworks flares, etc. High resolution up to 4K. The small size is perfect for one hand shooting, whereas using your phone is much more cumbersome, and phones are much more fragile, even with a case. Via the Quik app, the camera connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. With this wireless connection a lot can be done hands off: you can remotely adjust various settings, activate the shutter, and automatically upload the photos/video to your phone or your computer. This just scratches the surface of the capacities, many of which I have yet to discover in the 10 days I have had the camera. No instruction book was included, perhaps assuming that most owners have prior models, and most of the shooting and adjusting of parameters is similar to previous cameras. Instead there was a small flyer that advised loading the Quik app on your phone, and updating the firmware. To begin basic shooting, however, this left me with a lot of hunting on the web page of GoPro, and the downloaded app Quik. The app has regular updates, and via the Quik app, your camera will receive firmware updates as well. In the week since I first started my exploration and learning about the camera, there was already an update of Quik. In the week since I first started my exploration and learning about the camera, there was already an update of Quik. Quik can add music to your downloaded video footage, and create montages of your still photos, whether taken from the GoPro, or images on your Photos library from other sources. These can be organized into albums by the app. Editing tools exist in the app to cut footage not wanted, splice the segments, and speed up or slow down segments for slo-mo or rapid pace viewing. Filter effects can be added for post-production highlighting of your video.Trophy single frame images can be extracted from the video footage for a high resolution print. Living up to the action camera capacities, you can control your camera from your phone, so you don’t have to take off your helmet or remove the camera from your snowboard front to start recording, adjust settings, etc. Using the Bluetooth connectivity, you can live stream from the GoPro for sharing the action while it is happening. Reviewing the GoPro web page, the Hero 13 offers new features and options over the GoPro 12 that are compelling. Some of the changes require the model 13, and are incompatible with previous models. Since this is my first GoPro, it affects me not at all. But if you have prior models, some of these will not work with former cameras. One change with the 13, there is a larger capacity battery, and physically larger with different array of electrical contacts in the battery socket as well. So if you have a small arsenal of batteries from older GoPros, for a long day of photo shooting, you cannot utilize those batteries in your new camera. The new battery has about 10% higher mAh rating, increased from a 1720mAh to 1900mAh. Since prior models had the habit of shutting down when the battery heated up too much, and the housing has been redesigned to provide better cooling for the battery, so cool down interruptions are diminished. One relatively new accessory (Hero 10 or later) is essentially a mag-safe like external charging feature. This is not included with the 13, but as an extra purchase. You replace the battery door with one that has charging ports which can be connected to a variety of power sources , such as a power bank, wall plug, perhaps a solar panel (?). via a USB-C plugin. So the camera can remain attached to your helmet, handlebars, hang-glider frame, or whatever, and you have a larger external battery recharging the internal battery as you go. Swappable camera lenses now automatically adjust the camera settings for the new parameters of the alternative lens. Previously when you switched to a macro or wide angle lens, you would have to go into the camera settings and adjust for the change. Now the lens will be sensed by the camera, and the adjustments are automatic. Changing the lenses is conceptually simple. The instructions in the downloadable manual were to push the lens cover in and then give it a twist. However, for me it would not budge. I was tempted to use a pliers or similar to accomplish the removal. But not yet owning an attachment lens to add for macro or other utilization, I controlled that impulse. Further reading online gave the suggestion that initially you need to slightly pull the cover AWAY from the camera body, sort of to break the factory seal. Similar to the first opening of a jar of olives or jelly. With a fingernail I gently pried around the circumference of the lens, and then the twist and turn worked. Reportedly, after a few times, it becomes much easier to swap out your lenses and filters. The camera responds to voice commands, so you can take a photo, switch between photo and video and time lapse mode, without having to let go of the handlebars, etc. This is going to replace my digital mirrorless SLR and probably half of my phone-ography

I have owned GoPros since the hero 2 and nearly every model. The hero13 has a few new tricks up it's sleeve, one being HLG HDR which looks amazing on an HDR display, other being the new accessories like the macro lens and magnetic charger door. It is a very mature system at this point especially considering the gopro labs extra features. I use these cameras kayak fishing and love the qr timecode sync, the quality of the built in mics, and the mounts. I would like to see better low light functionality.

The GoPro HERO13 Black is the most impressive GoPro I’ve had the pleasure of using. The camera offers up to 5.3K resolution at 60 fps, 1080p at 240 fps and up to 400 frames of slo-mo bursts at 720p (for 15 seconds). For most situations, 4K at 60 FPS is ideal, but there are plenty of options to get the correct resolution and frame rate. The 13th edition of the Hero offers HDR video, HyperSmooth stabilization and WiFi 6 for faster transfer speeds. With GPS, you can tag the location of your photos and videos in real time, which makes it easier to organize the footage after the fact. The camera is sturdy and waterproof up to 33 ft. The setup process is fairly easy. I’m not sure if you can set it up without a smartphone, but what you do is link the camera to your phone with the app, so that the camera can receive the most current firmware. You can also rename the camera and figure out a few settings, such as cloud storage. You can also use your phone as a remote, and you can view the image on your phone, although the preview looked much darker on my phone than on the camera. To give it a proper test ride, I figured a run up the local hills would be a good demonstration as to whether the 13 Black could handle my extreme athleticism. It was roughly 75°F and sunny, so fairly optimal conditions for a good shoot. I will mention that after roughly 30 mins of use, the camera did feel pretty warm. The camera stabilization works so wonderfully, and keeps the shot very steady while running around on a dirt road. The HDR adds a little more contrast, but the regular image looks beautiful as well, and is of course more compatible than HDR. For action shots, I highly recommend using at least 60 fps, since I started filming at 30 while still learning the camera. I read the manual before leaving my home, but it’s hard to remember 75 pages while huffing and puffing like Darth Vader. I recommend switching to the Pro settings ASAP, because that’s where all the important settings are. I found the sharpness filter to be a little too aggressive by default (medium), and it enhanced every little hair and imperfection on my face to the point that I felt very self-conscious. There’s also a lot of noise reduction on by default, so definitely tinker with those settings before and while you shoot. The audio sounded good in windy conditions, and if you want it to sound even better, you can save the audio as raw wav files, which is great if you’re willing to sacrifice some SD space. The microphone had no problem picking up my voice and it sounded nice and clear. The typical GoPro mount is included, and the camera works with common camera mounts, but there are several GoPro options as well. GoPro also offers additional lens if you’re looking for more options than the ones included, perhaps a macro or an anamorphic. I personally will invest in a macro lens in the near future. You can also get ND filters for more cinematic, motion-blur looks. More useful features include QuikCapture that allows you to start shooting by pressing the capture button when the camera is off, HindSight allows you to capture 15 or 30 seconds BEFORE you hit capture. There’s a 2X (digital?) zoom, a timer and a scheduled capture. Of course, there’s plenty of manual control for ISO, white balance, shutter speed, sharpness and noise suppression. Lens options without physically replacing lenses include linear, wide, SuperView (16mm) and HyperView (12mm). There’s also a linear with horizon lock, which forces the perspective horizontally. It works really well, and it’s perfect for POV-style running or biking videos. I found HyperView to be too wide under most circumstances, but I can see it come in handy when you’re in tight spaces. While filming you can add HiLight tags to mark your favorite moments. The photo mode does a great job at taking photos, whether you want to take single photos or bursts. There’s also a time lapse mode with plenty of options in terms of resolution and frequency of photos taken. The display turns itself off after a while, but the red light will keep blinking. A night mode comes in handy for night shots or filming the sky at night, there are several time lapse modes for night settings as well. The HERO13 works great as a webcam, and all you need is to download an app to make your computer see it as a webcam. The two resolutions available are 1080p and 720p at 30 fps. The picture quality is great, and very minimal latency. You can also live stream by connecting to the GoPro Quik app. I finally want to mention that this is my third GoPro. My first one was one of the early models, the second one was from maybe 5 years ago, so I’m glad to see these improvements. I’m looking forward to using this camera in multiple different ways. All in all, I would highly recommend the HERO13 Black to anyone looking for an upgraded GoPro or just looking for a compact camera that handles motion and the outdoors like a charm. There are plenty of accessories available to enhance the experience even further, but with just what you get out of the box, this is a camera that will impress both and your viewers, time and time again!
