great price and great power and sound

For the price it has great power, HDMI inputs galore, also dual inputs for two subwoofers as in 7.2. Attractive and compact weight and size yet a powerhouse. Wish there was at least one composite input for older components but will make due for the features and price. Always had HK recievers and always happy with no problems. A good product that serves most purposes at the right price when it was on sale at Best Buy. Used with a universal remote it fits the bill

I bought this as a replacement to my 15 yr. old Denon.I had overheating issues but it still lasted that long.I am definately happy with the audio ,seemed to improve on the new electronics. This one has an on board fan which I took into consideration when buying again.Denon had none but I didn`t go into the Magnolia room, them high dollar. For $650, seems to be pretty good.Still doesn`t program to my 620 logitech remote exactly the way I want it , but still works nonetheless.

The receiver took a long time to figure out how to work all the features. Once I figured it out it works good. My biggest gripe is that there is no dedicated bluetooth button on the remote. You have to go through the on screen display which is fine if you are using zone 1. When you use zone 2 it does not show on the receiver display. You have to see it on the tv. The receiver also does not recognize windows 8 so if you want to stream music from a computer wirelessly you have to wait for an update.

Great sound, worst app ever

The receiver purchased for the sound quality alone is worth the money. If you are purchasing this for the app and multi zone capability. Don't do it. The app loses connectivity too easily. The manuals available weren't helpful and their tech support people are located across the globe and were little help.

Very Sad to see the route that Harman Kardon has taken. A lackluster limited onscreen display was the first drawback to this receiver. The limited controls were the second. By then I had had enough. The receiver doesn't allow much room for preference.

Easy to use. Was able to set it up with a All-In-One remote to operate all the components. Could set up for use inside and outside.

Good receiver, it has a lot of HDMI and other outputs and inputs, so you can connect everything you want. Don't like remote control, its very light and looks cheap

Fairly easy to set up and sounds great. We bought this because of its network connectivity so we could use a tablet to control it. However, this has not worked and we have troubleshooter multiple things.

Great Harmon Sound

I have been in the market for an upgrade to my old HK Receiver, but have been waiting to see if Bestbuy would soon stock some of the better HK products. While shopping there, I saw three new receivers being placed on display. This receiver was the most expensive. At first look, I thought that this was just an upgrade to the AVR1700. Closer inspection found it to be much more. The 1710 has dual HDMI outputs and a Dual Sub output and is now a 7.2 system. When I had it cranked up, I discovered a very robust bass, and great highs found in my old HK. What a cost difference. My old receiver originally cost around $1400! The 1710 produces a very clean sound, and handles the most demanding Blu-Ray video and sound with no problem. I loved it. Here is where the problems started. The "getting started" instructions tell you to go to the Harmon website to obtain the full operating manual. The unit is not even listed yet. I called Harmon and spoke with a technician who told me that they have no information on the unit yet. He said to call back in 10 days. I also learned that none of the Harmon Kardon AVR's have the standby passthrough feature. Despite the great sound, I have decided to return the unit to Bestbuy and opt for something else. I agree with the previous review. If you do not require the standby passthrough feature, this is a great receiver. It outperforms many other receivers at twice the cost. Granted, I probably did not need the manual to set the receiver up, but I wanted to see the specs, High Current output, etc, which I always consider when purchasing a n HK.

Below the average for that price range

After reading reviews and announcements for months, I got the Harman Kardon 1710 and the Sony STR-DN1040 7.2 Channel 1155-Watt A/V Receiver - I liked both so I decided to buy them, test them for few days and then return one. I have to say the Sony is a much better receiver from all points of view (great sound, great UI, more power, WiFi, 8 HDMI).
HK 1710 is an average receiver, expensive for that price ($550). The chassis looks cheap, the UI is terrible and the sound is OK. Besides, despite the internet connection, you have to download the updates on a USB key, connect it to the receiver and then you can update the software!.
The remote is terrible cheap (I’ve never seen such as terrible remote for a receiver) and other details of the receiver are not great (like the small cover of the panel for the mic input and the front USB). I like the light and compact design.
My recommendation: for the same price (or little bit more – I heard the HK 1710 is currently sold at $450, clearly is not doing well) get the Sony STR-DN1040.

Great Audio Receiver
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I already had a H/K AVR-7550 in my main audio room. I just purchased a set of B&W AM-1 outdoor speakers for my other room for use with zone 2. I hooked them up to my Onkyo TX-NR808 and was not satisfied with the sound. I read several reviews on the AVR-1710 and decided to give it a try because I knew that my 7550 worked excellent with the house B&W's after having tried them with Pioneer Elite and Marantz. I am not by any means disappointed although my neighbors may be this summer when I turn up the volume on the zone 2 outside speakers. In all fairness to the reviews I read on this receiver, you must bear in mind that dollar for dollar this is a great receiver for sound. Based on the price paid, you will not get all the bells and whistles but you will get GREAT sound. If you need HDMI pass through to watch TV when the unit is not on, video conversion then do not buy this unit. If you do need a good entry level unit for sound and have halfway good speakers and a TV and DVD player that do not need receiver enhancing, then for the price this is a great unit to own.

Great Sound...But returning it

While shopping in Bestbuy today, I saw the new AVR 1710 and asked the salesman if it has standby passthough. He said that it was so new that he did not know. He told me to buy it and try it out. If it did not have the feature to return it. Wow, the sound is great and compares to my old HK receiver, and is much clearer than a Denon 3313 that I tried out. After experimenting with the settings, I contacted HK and spoke with a technician inside the US. He said that it is so new that he had not seen one. He told me that it does not have standby passthrough. This is a must for me so I will purchase the Marrantz SR5007. If the passthrough feature is not a necessity, I recommend this receiver. It is head over heels above the AVR 700 and the 1700. It outperforms several much more expensive receivers.

Harmon Kardon 1710

This unit clearly states on the front that it passes 4k signal through the unit in bypass mode and it does not. I have two separate 4k sources Amazon 4k Fire tv and Samsung 8550 4k blu ray and all of them no matter what version of hdmi cable used will not pass the 4k signal. However if I plug any of the sources directly into my Samsung 4k tv they work no problem in 4k. When I contacted Harmon Kardon they basically told me that I was wrong and I spent over 3 hours on the phone trouble shooting with them that always resulted in the same thing. Go thorough the 1710 downgrades signal to 1080i and plug it directly into the tv 4k. Harmon Kardon tells me that I am wrong the unit does pass 4k through it however i can do the test 1 or 20 times and i get the same results. I asked Harmon Kardon to stick behind their product and since it does not do what it says it does and should would they replace it with a unit that does since I believe based on these tests that their are guilty of false advertisement since their unit does not pass 4k and when I purchased the unit i specifically asked if the unit passed 4k and there were any restrictions to which the reply was no. In the end Harmon Kardon basically told me to go pound sound that I am wrong and their unit works as advertised. I will never buy Harmon Kardon again and have never had this experience with other companies like Sony, Samsung, etc. For the record I work at a large media entertainment company and build out audio and video systems so I do have 20 years of experience doing the type of work daily. Please don't but this system expected it to do pass 4k or the company to stand behind its product.

Brand response from Harman Kardon Support

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. The HK1710 does support 4K at the time of its release. HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) 2.2 will become mandatory for 4K/UHD content only. The whole chain needs to be compatible to work from source to AVR to TV. If you have newer products with these newer formats, unfortunately the HK1710 is not compatible. Next-generation AVRs will have HDCP 2.2.These will be new models after the present 1510S, 1610S, 1710S and 3700.

Better Receivers Available For Less $

I tried this receiver and while not terrible by any means, it just doesn't stack up to other receivers that cost less. I ended up buying a Denon-X1000 with Audyssey XT that sounds FAR better, and I can't emphasize enough just how much better the Denon sounds, and it was less money. Save yourself some coin by doing some research before dropping $600 on this unit.
