I love this movie. It is only one of the events that blacks have been recognized for in the history of this country. If you look at many inventions and construction, black have made insurmountable contributions to the USA and abroad. Forget prejudices and recognize that without the labor and inventions of blacks this country would not be what it is today. Yet history buff and educators do not teach the real stories only the half truths.

The three friends are smart, hardworking, ambitious. Hidden Figures is the rare true story-based historical drama which succeeds at being as inspirational as it does feel-good

Space exploration is a favorite subject of mine, always amazed by the cosmos and wandering what is out there. It's even better when people from your home state help out with the space program. I love October Sky, a film about a teenager, Homer Hickham (A fellow West Virginias) who saw Sputnik, and decided to become a scientist and later did work at NASA despite living in the coal fields where it was either football or mining. Color me surprised when I learned of Katherine Johnson, a NASA human computer who was born here in WV. An amazing woman who helped out NASA with the first men in space, helped with the moon landing, and even helped chart a plan to Mars. So I was excited to see this film, but it came with a rather sensationalized story with many falsehoods, but still entertaining nonetheless. Katherine Goble (Taraji P. Henson, terrific as always) is working in Langley, VA as a human computer, with 2 fellow colleagues in a racially and gender segregated area, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer, also terrific) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae). After the Soviets send Yuri Gregarin to space, they are sent to the Space Task Group in Houston, Texas, headed up by All Harrison (Kevin Costner). They are all extremely demeaning to the trio, especially by STG head engineer Paul Stafford (Jim Parsons). Over time, they earn respect for their courage and work efforts, and take down boundaries as well. I gotta say, this is a really good movie, with the acting being a stand-out, but this is a solid effort overall. Co-writer and director Theodore Melfi does really well with the material, though it's very sensationalized in nature (the famous scene where Harrison destroys a segregated bathroom sign cause of the half-mile walk to the other side isn't accurate). The screenplay has many cliches, character condensation and outright lies, but it still gives off a good message about women and how segregation is wrong. The 60s aesthetic is beautiful and the cinematography is similarly beautiful. Overall, a feel-good movie that'll entertain well enough, and will make you want to learn more about these ladies of NASA. The PQ is mighty impressive for a DVD, with it carrying a nice detailed, standard definition image that upscales nice on an HDTV. The film, shot on 35mm and 16mm film, delivers a beautiful image with depth and details and accurate colors along with a nice, even grain field. The sound is also nice as well, with the robustly designed 5.1 surround sound track that has plenty of surround activity, but not much LFE, sadly. Overall, it's a nice DVD presentation. Moving on to the extras, the DVD doesn't come with all the extras, on the disc itself, but with the included Digital HD code, it bundles every extra on your digital service of choice (and the film looks even better in HD, and I'm sure is fantastic in the 4k UHD), but I'll stick to the disc, starting with a commentary with Melfi and Henson. Next up are a photo gallery, a five minute piece on the locations in Georgia used for filming, 2 featurettes from the longer documentary on the digital copy and HD copies of the film, which looks at the life and work of Katherine Johnson, and the films trailer complete the DVD. The 45 minute documentary is a must see that has plenty of BTS goodies as well, so use that digital copy to view. Overall, this a cheap way to get an HD version of the film with all the extras on the digital platform of choice, but the DVD is a nice way to view a nice film with plenty of extras on the DVD itself, but I'd recommend the Bluray or 4k versions to get everything in one place with better picture and sound.

I grew up a NASA fan and checked out all kinds of books about the space program from the library when I was young. I was also happened to lived near one of their facilities and some of my childhood friends had fathers who worked there. When I saw this movie, I literally could not believe I had never heard of these women. What a shame and travesty that their contribution wasn't mentioned in a single book I had read. I was very moved by this film and bought the blu-ray for Christmas for my daughter, who requested it after watching it in the theater. She could have asked for any of the garbage titles that teenagers are into these days but she asked for Hidden Figures and I was more than happy to buy it for her. A+

This is the true story of mathematics genius Katherine Johnson played masterfully by Taraji P. Henson. Katherine Johnson worked as a "computer" for NASA. A math specialist. Dorothy Vaughn ( Octavia Spenser) and Mary Jackson ( Janelle Monae) also work at NASA and are associates of Ms. Johnson. Kevin Costner plays her boss at NASA and Jim Parsons plays her immediate supervisor. All of their performances are outstanding. It's the story the space program and the people that got us all the way to the moon. John Glenn through to Neal Armstrong depended on the genius of Ms. Johnson to aid them in accomplishing their missions. Especially Glenn and Armstrong. We see the stupidity of bigotry and the need for it's end.

I enjoy watching this movie multiple times. It shows what Black American went through back in the 1960's and still going through without preaching. It shows three Black Women, but basically women in general, have to put up with in order to get ahead in their job.

How many know that women - and especially women who "wear glasses" - were working as human computers at NASA in the 60s? And who were instrumental in the space race? AND who shattered so many perceptions of what women could accomplish? This is a must watch for everyone! And while Ms. Henson deserved all the kudos she received and Ms. Spencer is her usual supremely talented self, it is Ms. Monae who is a revelation. These three actresses form a gripping, loving and funny trio that you will want to watch again and again. Enjoy!

Hidden Figures is a powerful exposition of how three African-American women overcame sexism and racism to make incomparable contributions to the US space program during the 1960s. The movie demonstrates far better than academic works how cruel and wasteful the Jim Crow system was. On the technical side, this was the first 4K DVD I've viewed. I was blown away by the bright, true colors and sharp resolution.

This movie has a clean image -- perhaps not the cleanest I've ever seen, but it is still really good. All the colors seem accurate, and the fine details in clothing and hair really stand out. Where this copy stands out most is the audio. Everything in it feels alive; from the soundtrack to the silence, it is full of depth, but not static. A great edition of an already great movie.

Great movie and a good place to purchase movies and electronics. I also purchased the replacement ink for my Cannon printer. Which I purchased last year, and My MAC Book Pro computer I believe the year before that. So this among other things I purchased there, is not my first rodeo, I have had a long relationship with your store, and plan to continue it. Thanks for being there. Jim

I use this in my classroom to show my math students that math can be extremely important and a "hidden" talent. There are also so many other lessons to be learned from the interpersonal relationships, social perspectives, and much more. An excellent choice for those days when the school schedule allows the time for a movie.

Beautiful story and performances by the trio of actresses in this film. Based on a true story, these women historically trailblazed for women today to have opportunities in fields once dominated by males with strength, courage, and perseverance played inspiringly by Mrs. Henson, Spencer, and Monae.
