Having read The Hobbit several times, this screen adaptation of the first part of the book is very well done. The characters are memorable, funny, fully developed. The acting is well done, but Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins is tremendous. Of course, Ian McKellen continues to portray Gandalf as we remember him from The Lord of The Rings movies; fantastic. Can't wait for the second movie that finishes out the story!

I am so glad that Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyd and Fran Walsh came together to make The Hobbit. the care in which they put the movie and characters together could not be matched by anyone else. It is always interesting to watch how it goes from script to screen, and the collaboration between the immense cast and crew who work together to make it look so seamless. Looking forward to the next two installments!

As a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this was obviously right up my ally. While it's very much distinct from LotR, it still has the feel of Middle Earth, albeit with a lighter tone. With the extended edition yet to be released, it's not surprising that this release doesn't have a ton of extra features. If you're into that kind of thing, wait for the extended edition. Otherwise, it's a fantastic movie.

I had bought all 3 parts of Lord of the rings movie since I have bought the DVDs on sale in Thanksgiving. This made me watch the Hobbit movie in theaters as soon as the film got released in Dec 2012. Since then I was waiting to own this movie in Blu-ray and best buy had listed this on Sale.
I just grabbed it and watched it again in my new Big TV. It was amazing and I couldn't be more happy!!!!!

Well, this is the first movie in a trilogy based upon a children's book. There wasn't as much character development in the original book compared to the LOTR books and that came through in the movie. They pulled extra material from other sources and did seem to incorporate them. But, did it really need to be 3 hours?
Jumps from action scene to action scene...
The special effects are awesome...

This is one of my favorite movies, I saw it more than once in the theatre and since buying it, have seen it multiple times at home. The loving care that Peter Jackson took to bring the book to life is evident in each frame and attention to detail. The actors are superb and the story - even though it diverges slightly from the book - is well told and interesting. Well worth buying.

The Hobbit movies are some of my all time favorites, so when I decided to purchase this one, it was a great start to my set. The graffics are great, and the acting does not disappoint (loved Lord of the Rings, too). The dwarfs make this an exciting and funny movie, but still have the suspense and fairy-like elves to even it up. Overall, a good movie. I would definitely recommend.

The "Unexpected Journey" was an unexpected pleasure! Following an Academy Award-Winning performance of the final trilogy, this film delivers in unexpected ways! The audience is immediately drawn it to the character roles (of which I was a skeptic), but after a few short moments, I found the transition of characters was seamless from the original series. The "hobbit" became the original "hobbit" of the Shire. I was swept up in all the journey that I had come to expect. Please keep these unexpected gems coming to your viewing audience. Thanks!

we bought this one to try out our new smart 3d bluray player. sadly, due to the holiday shopping craze, i couldn't find the 3d version. this is an awesome movie either way. we enjoyed the extra footage which hits a few of the plot devices which were, in my mind, not made clear in the theatrical release. it's tragic to wait so long for the extended versions but, in the end, worth it.

I was skeptical about the Hobbit series when they first came out, but after my buddies were all talking about the third film I felt left out so I decided to buy the first two movies and I was really drawn in. How the movie starts is kind of bland and random, but once the ball starts rolling it gets pretty exciting. I was holding my breath for a few parts of the movie. :)

I liked how they filled in the back story and looped it to connect to Lord of the Rings series. The extended portions filled in gaps. As the first 4 chapters of the Book were slow the extended version had just enough of the 'concerning Hobbits' and the Shire portions to show the good without being boring. The added a portions from Rivendell were a very good addition.

This movie was absolutely gorgeous. Costumes, effects, design, everything was amazing. The Radagast sections didn't need to be quite so long but I do appreciate that PJ's trying to get the Dol Goldur/Necromancer bits in. Similarly, Galadriel's comments about Angmar and Rhudaur probably will be incomprehensible to the average watcher but they do hold a deeper significance.

As always one needs to be cautious when buying a release before the trilogy is finished. That said, this is loads better than first Hobbit release (practically devoid of extras). And, of course, the quality of HD video and sound is without equal.

The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey. What can i say, its is exactly what most fans wanted in this film. And the Blu-ray 3D DVD delivers in nearly every aspect. The only thing i was a bit disheartened by was the lack of the High Frame Rate not being available, but that isn't something i can really blame the movie for, since it is Blu-ray and DVD players that can't handle 48fps.

My wife and I had originally seen The Hobbit in the theater.
We both really enjoyed it. So, I was excited to purchase it on blu-ray.
Only disappointment, no steel case available... I have the other LOTR movies on steel case blu-ray.
Other than that, I do highly recommend the movie.
It's entertaining from start to finish. I'm looking forward to the followup movies.

I already had the regular blu-ray from last year, but not the extended version. I was intending to buy "The Desolation of Smaug".
and unexpectedly bought this version because it was under new releases. Didn't realize it until I got home and opened it. It was my $39 mistake, but I still like the movie. And didn't mind watching the extended version.

Overall, a wonderful movie portrayal of Tolkien's novel & a great follow-up to the Lord of the Rings movies. The "extras" were so-so with the exception of the piece describing the various parts of New Zealand chosen to film the movie. The extras take you behind the scenes to see more about how the movie was filmed, the actors, etc. which isn't a big draw for me.

Being a big Hobbitt fan I may be a little biased but this movie is still done excellently! I was a little upset that the book was being broken in to three parts. However, I am grateful for this because they are able to capture everything in the book so you aren't missing out on much. Great cinematography: the scenes are breathtaking and the special affects are amazing. I have not watched the DVD extras and so can't rank them. Great movie and think anyone, even if they aren't a big fantasy fan, would enjoy this series.

Being a fan of the LOTR trilogy, I wasn't sure how to take in the remake of the hobbit. Well I was blown away. The effects were amazing and photo realistic. Much better than LOTR. Even on blu ray, the quality is amazing. It was nice to see some familiar faces again. I can continue to watch several of these films as long as Peter Jackson produces them.
