If you liked "An Unexpected Journey," then you are sure to like "The Desolation of Smaug." The performances are very good all the way around: Ian McKellan in his usual fantastic best as Gandalf, Richard Armitage as the intense and courageous Thorin Oakenshield, and of course Martin Freeman as The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. I especially liked seeing Freeman as Bilbo in a brief but dramatic scene where we get to see him contend with the seductive lure of "The One Ring" after almost losing it. The rest of the cast does a great job also, from Orlando Bloom's reprisal as Legolas, to the many dwarfs in Thorin's band, to newcomer Angeline Lilly. Tolkein purists who would like to literally see the novel "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" on the screen may be disappointed. This is Peter Jackson's version of "The Hobbit," and it does deviate from the book on quite a few occassions. I personally liked the changes, but then again, I am not quite so married to the book. The tone of the movie is a bit more lighthearted than "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy was, just like the previous movie. Some may not like this, but I think that it is justified, because the book it is based on was originaly meant as a children's book, unlike The Lord of the Rings. Even so, Jackson seems to have made a movie that is darker than the source material, and has sort of split the difference between the tone of the book and the tone of the the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This set is great - it comes with four formats of the movie, including Blu-Ray 3D. If you are lucky enough to own a 3D TV and a 3D Blu-Ray player, then you are in for a real treat. The 3D in this movie is very good, with decent depth of field. The sound and image quality is just as you would hope for, too. If you are thinking about getting this, then just do it!

`When a novel is written and has a vision that will blow you away the one thing many artists want to do is make a movie about it. Nine times out of 10 movies that were firstly books suck. What people have to understand is that Peter Jackson has devoted nearly 15 years of his life to this universe we know as Middle Earth. What people also have to understand is that every reader can see something different. Having said that Jackson has stayed true to this world Tolkien created. Sure he has added a lot, but he really hasn't taken out anything major, if he did these films would not span six films because viewers would simple give up. Critics whether they are "professionals" or "fans" have to understand their vision probably won't entirely make the cut of the film, if it did it wouldn't be Jackson's vision. Having said all this The Desolation of Smaug is a grand adventure that is well acted, directed, and told without confusion. And thus far is the best Middle Earth picture to hit the big screen!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is even better than the first episode. I've read the book and very unusual for me, purchased it as I wanted to keep it. I also own the Lord of The Rings Trilogy as I guess I'm really into J. J. R. Tolkien. Peter Jackson, the producer, did a masterful job with the movie and the movie follows very well and is truly faithful to the book. As everyone knows Peter Jackson decided to split the book into three parts and the final part will be called "There and Back Again" as near the end of the book, Bilbo Baggins is sitting in his study writing his memoirs and thinks about calling them "There and Back Again, a Hobbits Holiday". The book ends as Gandalf and the dwarf Balin visit Bilbo and discuss the Lands of the Mountain and the fate of the Old Master. Gandalf says that the old prophecies came true after all with the able help of Bilbo. The last episode will be truly memorable and I know that Peter Jackson will do it proud. I cannot wait to see it!

I found this extended edition fascinating to watch. It resolved a few questions for me that I wondered about especially after having read the book. Scenes which were depicted in the book are displayed on here while some parts in the book were loosely interpreted on this extended edition. I've always separated the book from the movie though. The book is its own fun experience as this extended edition to the Hobbit The Desolation Of Smaug is its own amazing experience as a film. Combining both I find myself even more immersed in the world of J.R.R Tolkien having read LOTR and The Hobbit and watched the movies based on his great books. Definitely buy if you're a collector for the secret key that comes with it as depicted in the film. Otherwise get the extended edition without it if you're curious to see the extra scenes without paying a bit extra for this limited edition. Great movie to watch before watching the Battle Of Five Armies in theaters now!

For fans of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit this was another fantastic movie in the series and a favorite of mine. The movie is one of the most action packed ever and the special effects seem to continuously improve. The fight sequences are almost on the comic relief side but very satisfying even though unbelievable. Sure there was some hollywood additions that weren't in the book but once again, very satisfying and you can't go wrong with a hot female elf that can keep up with the likes of Legolas. Smaug is exactly as I imagined while reading the book and I cannot wait for the last movie of the series to hit the theatres and then BluRay. The 3D version is like being in the middle of the action and well worth the watch too!
