You can tell that Peter Jackson is stretching this material in more than one way - the first is stretching the story for time in order to piece it in to three movies. The second stretch is trying to make the story a bit more adult than it really is. Truth be told, The Hobbit is a children's story, especially when compared to The Lord of the Rings, which is decidedly an adult high-fantasy epic. Because of this fact, The Lord of the Rings will always be better films, simply because they come from better material. That said, this is these are the best Hobbit movies I can imagine being made, and I'm not sure anyone would have done better than Jackson and his compatriots. This 2nd installment to the Hobbit series is briskly paced - a pace that could have broken in order to take more time with the story and rich environments. Overall, a wonderful achievement and worthy to own on Blu-Ray for years of enjoyment.

What's to say? If you're reading this, you've probably already made up your mind! Just go buy it!! Really, though - this is an awesome movie. I happen to be a fan of the franchise, so that's easy for me to say. But what about if you don't dig the franchise? This is still an awesome example of what BluRay is capable of! Picture is fantastic, and the extras are worth the price of admission. The sound?? IS AWESOME!! I am especially loving the score / soundtrack right now, too. Bottom line - you should run to BestBuy and purchase this for YOUR library! :-)

This movie shows the epic vistas portrayed in the book and the action one expects and I recommend it to anyone who loves the book or series so far.Having said that I did find something off slightly in the setting of the human laketown and the possibility of relationships flowering that didn't seem correct. Also while it's been years and always folly to compare books to their screen counterpart, there seems to be things added that I don't remember in the book. Overall great movie...just wish it wasn't 3 parts no matter how big the book though I understand why

The first Hobbit was really good. I had a hard time at first watching it because it was explaining each character and I wanted action from the beginning. Then as it kept going, I loved it and my 7 year old grandson watched it and was "glued" to the TV. The second Hobbit took right off into action. The characters were amazing. The scenery of both movies were very good too. After watching this 2nd Hobbit and seeing the actors before make up was so good. I bought the extended version of the first Hobbit the same day . so, I will be watching this too very soon.

This is a fun movie to watch if you're not a Tolkien purist. The addition of a female character and much license to the plot might turn of some. However, if you try to enjoy it as based on Tolkien and a fun action romp with lots of CGI, you'll enjoy this movie. Do be advised that the LOTR series by Jackson grows increasingly more reliant on CGI rather than the huge sets and amount of actors in his first movies. However, the graphics are fantastic and the movie makeup incredible. Enjoy the visuals. Enjoy the show. This movie will not disappoint.

You could say this is Peter Jackson's "Empire Strikes Back"--it is a pivotal point in the franchise not just story-wise, but execution-wise, as well. Stronger both visually and dramatically, this one lays everything on the table for the long character development of the first, and sets the stage for the final act with flair, action, and a bit of fun. Great effects, great story, new characters, and, for an extended version, very little down-time. Great disc, and as always, the extensive supplemental sections will keep you busy for days!

If you're a fan of the LOTR movies and The Hobbit, then why would it not be excited about getting its dirty little handsess on the extended version of TDOS?? Getting Durins' key was awesome! I admit that hearing Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug made the little fanboy inside of me as giddy as a schoolgirl! Martin Freeman IS Bilbo Baggins. I loved watching the extras as well - all of the Tolkein works done by PJ have such love put into them and you can see it in the movie and in the painstaking process of making the movies!

Part 2 of the trilogy for The Hobbit. If you are watching, you must have watched the first of the 3, or you may get lost. The Hobbit trilogy is lining up to be just as good as The Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you've read the books, you know Peter Jackson does a wonderful job of staying true to the books as much as cinematically possible (there are some things missing, but it really does not bother me at all). If you haven't watched this or the first The Hobbit - I highly recommend it if you even remotely like Fantasy type of movies.

Highly recommended movie for fans of the series even though this is the "Empire Strikes Back" of the Hobbit series in that it serves mainly to setup the next movie and expands the character stories. The only thing I found disappointing about the movie was the character relationships seemed to change without any external influences at times throughout the movie. I'm not sure if scenes that were left out of the final cut would have made the relational changes more clear, but it doesn't really detract from the story line. Great purchase

The desolation of smaug will be a classic 3D and 2D blu ray film. If you happen to have one of the newer smart Tv,s that can appreciate the quality of the film . This was one of the high quality 3D films this year. The fact that the film was made in increased frames per second more than the standard 24 frames per second was a plus in picture quality., The DTS Master audio sound track is also great , especially if you have surround sound system/ home theater. My rating for this film is 9.8 out of 10 only because I wanted to see more.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Extended edition 3D is a great movie to add to your movie collection. I own the extended editions of all the Lord of the Rings & Hobbit movies. The additional movie footage in my opinion always makes the movie more engaging. The extended editions give a lot more information & backstory to the plot so if your not one to read Tolkiens books its the way to go. Both screen depth & off the screen 3D effects are top notch. The movie was filmed with 3D cameras & not converted to 3D post production

I really enjoyed "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug"! Another awesome chapter in the Lord Of the Rings saga! Sure, Peter Jackson could have done "The Hobbit" in one movie. But I am happy he got the opportunity to spread it out over three movies. That gives time to really explore the story and characters in the wonderful book. The acting, special effects and story are all great here. The golden dragon, Smaug looks incredible on the screen, and has the great voice of Benedict Cumberbatch to support it. I highly recommend it!

Somewhat disappointing if you're a big fan of the book, otherwise highly enjoyable. I just wished some key scenes were left alone. In particular, the first time Bilbo goes in to the mountain and confronts Smaug is one of the best parts of the book, as Smaug stuggles to uncover Bilbo, who he can't see and doesn't recognize the smell. The movie blows it by uncovering Bilbo almost right away, completely drops the reasoning for why he was brought in as a burgler and the scene where he returns to the dwarves with a token of his success, has the dwarves in a completely imagined battle with the dragon, and then has to retcon why Smaug would turn his fury away from Bilbo and the dwarves and to Esgaroth instead. This whole sequence made excellent sense in the book, and while the new plot is a fun adventure to see on screen, its poorer storytelling.

No matter how many times director Peter Jackson plans on revisiting the worlds of Middle-Earth fans of the long-lived fantasy books can be guaranteed that the filmmaker has kept intact what they always loved most about the genre, and what others haven't been able to capture. In this, the 2nd Chapter of "The Hobbit" film trilogy and the Extended Version, Jackson promises and delivers on more and expanded the mythology to new levels. The bonus features are just spectacular and will thrill any film fan!

I would expect nothing less from Peter Jackson. Taking the LOTR Trilogy of books and turning them into 3 movie experiences was a feat in itself. Taking the classic Hobbit Tale and turning it into 3 movies, is so far an amazing ride. This one keeps going directly from the previous one and will obvious keep you going into the final one. The special effects and presence of Smaug on the screen is enough to make it all worth it. If you like fantasy films, or the LOTR movies, you will definitely enjoy this one!

Well I read the Lord of the Rings many, many times and loved the movies and although I only read the hobbit once, the movie takes it to higher levels. While I do think that it should only have been made into two movies not 3 this one was better then the first movie. The action, the effects, the way they bring Tolkien's world to life is wonderful. If you like fantasy, action, dragons, dwarves, hobbits and elves and other magical creatures and the adventure that comes with them you will like this movie!

As good as LoTR was, I have been disappointed with The Hobbit. What should have been two movies, at best, has been stretched to three for $. Yes, the effects were great but added too many unnecessary elements.

Parents need to know that The Desolation of Smaug is the second installment in director Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of The Hobbit. Unlike the streamlined adaptations of each of the three Lord of the Rings novels, The Hobbit is expanded beyond the source material with additional characters and story lines. While this series remains more tween-friendly than the more violent Lord of the Rings, there are still a few jump-worthy and frightening scenes, mostly dealing with the orcs, the dragon Smaug, and that most evil of beings, Sauron. Viewers with a fear of spiders may find some scenes difficult to watch. Bows are the weapons of choice, but hammers, swords, and other forged weapons are also used in the fight scenes (in addition to the dragon's built-in weapon of all-consuming fire).

This is the 2nd installment to the Hobbit trilogy movies. I have the extended blu rays of the Lord of the rings so the extended Hobbits will complete the entire saga. This movie was fantastic the longest in the hobbit series so far. I will admit there is about a 20min sec of the movie that I have not seen and refuse to watch.I don't want go give anything away except that if you fear these creatures like I do then you know what I'm talking about. Still an awesome movie though.
